Black Cat Readers
BLACK CAT publishes reading materials for learners of different ages, needs and interests, from school children to business people.
Black Cat readers contain stimulating activities and dossiers, explore links with other subject areas and use internet projects to increase students' knowledge. Stunning artwork, dramatised
recordings and CD-ROMs help to create educational and entertaining reading material.
EXPANSIVE READING
The following symbols are used to indicate the features in each title.
N New
Dear Teacher,
RS
Intensive and extensive reading have been the two major approaches to reading for a long
time. But Black Cat readers use an exciting new approach which we call EXPANSIVE
READING.
Expansive reading goes beyond the text to expand learning in many directions. Apart from
activities which check comprehension, and provide practice in the four skills, structures
and vocabulary building, Black Cat readers offer:
• Beautiful illustrations and dramatised recordings, which aid understanding of the text
and create a stimulus to read.
• Detailed explanations of the cultural background of the text.
• Cultural comparisons and analysis of film versions.
• Cross-curricular links, reflecting the value now given to Content and Language Integrated
Learning (CLIL).
• Projects on the web exploiting the Internet’s resources to the full.
• Exam-style activities to help prepare students for international language qualifications.
• Audio CD-ROMs for selected titles which ensure entertaining learning.

GREEN APPLE is a series of lavishly illustrated graded
readers especially designed for young teenagers. Many of
the readers are adaptations of classic stories, but there
are also some original stories and non-fiction readers.
The readers are graded into three levels – Starter, Step 1
and Step 2 – according to structural and lexical criteria, as
well as the suitability of the subject matter for the different
age groups. The lexis contained in the readers is checked
against the vocabulary lists specified for the Cambridge
ESOL exams; Flyers and KET for the readers at Starter and
Step 1 levels and PRELIMINARY for those at Step 2.
Black Cat step
Some titles contain extra features, which are indicated on the back
cover of the titles in question:
• Playscript at the back of the book.
• Audio CD/CD-ROM containing extra interactive language and
cross-cultural activities.

“Lots of interesting information, facts and visuals in a light, handy
format. My students ask for more”
Birgit Kammerhofer, Teacher, Austria
The EASYREAD series is aimed at young teenagers and above. It offers a range of attractive, full-colour, nonfiction graded readers; the subject areas are art and design, geography,
history, ICT, music, religious studies, science and social and environmental studies.
Suitable for young people studying English at secondary school, but aso interesting subjects
for young adult and adult readers with an elementary or early pre-intermediate level of English
(levels A1/A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference). Teachers, too, can take advantage of the crosscurricular approch or “Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)”.
There are two levels in the EASYREAD series, with controlled grammatical structures and lexis:
level 1 uses present tenses only, while level 2 introduces past tenses. As far as lexis is concerned, apart from some special vocabulary required by the reader topic, the maximum number of headwords used at level 1 is 300 words, increasing to 400 words at level 2.

poetry since she was in her teens, some of which have been published in anthologies and magazines in the UK.
Her latest work is this collection of children’s books, “THE ADVENTURES OF ROBBIE THE ROBIN”.
Her love of birds and other animals began when she was a child living in a village in the south of England. Her
fondness for birds, especially robins, inspired her to write this collection of books for children to enjoy.
