STOW,
OHIO,
FRIDAY,
SALVATION
The G r e a t Book says w e a r e to
m a k e our calling a n d election
sure, this is all i m p o r t a n t , so
friend, is salvation clear to y o u ?
One says be honest a n d moral,
pay your debts a n d all will be
well. A n o t h e r s a y s w a t c h your
step, don't get in wrong, t r e a t
people as you expect t h e m to
t r e a t you, t h a t is all t h a t is required, y o u r r e w a r d in t h e herea f t e r is certain. A n o t h e r says,
p r a y always, join the church,
hook up with some g r e a t doct r i n e of theology, t h a t is it, t h a t
is t h e r e q u i r e m e n t . A n o t h e r says
follow your conscience, t h a t is
t h e guide, it is t r u e as t h e n o r t h
star, t h a t is t h e divine instinct
born in the soul of man, so walk
t h e r e i n and some day you will
reach t h e golden shore. Howbeit our Guide Book says, "If thou
shalt confess with t h y m o u t h t h e
Lord Jesus Christ a n d believe in
thine h e a r t t h a t God h a t h raised
him f r o m t h e dead, t h o u s h a l t be
saved; f o r with the h e a r t m a n
believeth unto righteousness a n d
with the m o u t h confession is
m a d e u n t o salvation.
Perhaps
Christianity has not advanced
a n d conquered as it should f o r
the reason t h a t folk a r e asked to
believe so m a n y things, m a n y of
which a r e not essential to salvation. One m a y k n o w and believe
m a n y things, but only t w o a r e
imperative. F i r s t : t h a t I am a
sinner; second, t h a t Christ died
f o r me. Keep those t w o brief
thoughts in mind m y friend, let
t h e m take root and get a m i g h t y
grip, then all your wondering,
hoping and thinking of salvation
will be easy. So now I ask, when
were you saved? I don't know
M A R C H 20, 1942
No. 12
says one, I don't t h i n k a n y o n e
knows says a n o t h e r , all we can
do is hope says a n o t h e r . B u t it
is i m p o r t a n t , so when w e r e you
saved?
H o w long have
you
been Mrs. B. spoke a f r i e n d .
W h y bless you said she f r o m t h e
v e r y m i n u t e m y lover slipped the
r i n g on m y f i n g e r she replied.
Even so replied t h y f r i e n d I have
been saved a n d belong to His fold
f r o m t h e m i n u t e I lifted m y eyes
t o w a r d heaven a n d gave myself
to Him. W h a t m u s t I do t o be
saved cried t h e jailor a t Philippi?
Believe on t h e Lord Jesus Christ
was P a u l ' s a n s w e r . No difficulty here, you a r e a sinner, m a r k
well, a sinner; a n d Christ died
f o r you, t h a t is the g a t e t h a t
opens a n d a d m i t s whosoever wil]
to the Kingdom of God.
Don't expect t h e s t a r s to fall,
don't look f o r a g r e a t phenomena,
don't e x p e c t the heavens to open,
don't expect t h e Almighty to let
a l a d d e r down f r o m H e a v e n and
g r a c e the occasion with angels
ascending and descending.
Selvation is a business t r a n s a c t i o n
w h e r e b y m a n g r e e t s God's terms,
m a n t h e n t u r n s his face t o w a r d
home a n d follows with all t h e
light he has, t h e t r a i l of t h e lone
Galilean. Man m u s t k n o w two
facts, one is t h a t he is a sinner,
t h e o t h e r is t h a t Jesus died f o r
him.

J e s u s life, his teachings, his
miracles, a n d his r e s u r r e c t i o n p u t

he died, not even one line of
writing. Yet, w i t h only t h r e e
y e a r s of public life, he established t h e g r e a t e s t organization in
t h e world (the church), which
h a s continued f o r 1900 y e a r s despite every e f f o r t t o s t a m p it

W h o is Jesus ?
M e n say he w a s a prophet, a
g r e a t philosopher who lived a
blameless life. T h e y say he w a s
an idealist whose principles w e r e
too lofty f o r practical living.
T h e y say he w a s a MAN.
W h o is J e s u s ?
M a t t h e w says he is the Mes-
A
siah who w a s foretold by all t h e
old p r o p h e t s of Israel. God says,
"This is m y beloved Son." Jesus
says, "I a m t h e way, the t r u t h ,
a n d the life; no .man cometh u n t o
t h e F a t h e r b u t 'by me."
Peter
says, " T h e r e is none o t h e r n a m e
u n d e r heaven given among men,
w h e r e b y we m u s t be saved" and
thousands h e a r i n g him believed
also.
Believing is to give up oneself;
to let the Savior e n t e r the h e a r t ;
to t a k e the a l l - i m p o r t a n t step of
signifying before m e n
that.
J e s u s alone is one's Lord and
Master.
" T h e r e f o r e if a n y m a n be in

Some of t h e f o r m e r pleasures
a n d practices will be sacrificed,
but as a m a n loses himself in
Christ these personal i n t e r e s t s
become less a n d less i m p o r t a n t .
As he connects with t h e Infinite,

TEXT-SERMON
And when he was come unto us,
he took Paul's girdle, a n d bound
his own hands and feet, and said,
Thus saith the Holy Ghost, so
shall the Jews at Jersusalem bind
the man t h a t owneth this girdle,
and shall deliver him into the
hands of the Gentiles.
And when we h e a r d these things,
both we, and they of t h a t place,
besought him not to go up to J e r usalem.
Then P a u l answered, w h a t mean
ye to weep and to break mine
h e a r t ? F o r I am ready not t o be
bound only, but also to die at
Jerusalem f o r the n a m e of t h e
Lord Jesus.
And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, the
will of t h e Lord be done. Acts
21:11-14.
A f t e r some thought on the subject Rev. Hulme said t h a t he chose
"Church Fedelitv" as the topic of
nis morning's sermon.
In the text quoted above we find
Paul being urged to stay a w a y
f r o m Jerusalem. But Paul's answer betrayed
two
important
traits of his character. First, the
strength of t h e man. Second, t h e
greatness of the work or cause in
which he was engaged.
Mentioning fear, desire for respectability, or a sense of duty as
some of t h e various motives f o r
taking on the name of Christian
and belonging to a church, Rev.
Hulme
pointed out the
only
worthwhile reason, t h a t which
motivated the man Paul, LOVE.
CHURCH
NEWS
To love our God and fellowman
supremely is to have the fidelity of
Paul, willing even to be bound
hand and foot, willing even to die.
Now if we are to have a winning church group, we too must
have this fedelity. This
means
wiithin the church there must be.
(1) a praying group, (2) a people
with vision and (3) a loyal people.
Its not influence ("a pull"), its
not the money ("filthy lucre"), its
mot the building, but the DEVOT I O N of t h e Christian people is
t h e Glory of t h e church.
