As disciples, we seek to follow Jesus’ instructions to “preach” the Gospel through the way we live our lives. Pastor’s Letter— Letter—June 19, 2016 we Redemptorists in 1866. This celebration occurs on Monday, the 27th, the actual Feastday of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. It is being held in our sister church of St. Alphonsus “Rock” Church where the weekly novena devotions first got their start. Our triduum in May was an outstanding witness to how much we honor the patroness of our parish and seek her perpetual help. This celebration will bring together people and Redemptorists from all around the country to do the same. It will be televised on EWTN (and streamed on their website) live at 7:00 p.m. Monday the 27th. We are inviting anyone who wishes to come to Church at 6:15 on that evening for a special prayer service in Church and then process over to the John J. Sullivan, Jr. Banquet Hall to watch together the live broadcast on a big screen. Fathers Terry and Gene will lead you in prayer and celebration. In order to give us an idea of how many to prepare for in the hall, would you mind calling in an RSVP to advise us of your participation? Dear Parishioners and Friends, I hope all of those who attended our parish festival-homecoming had a good time. This being my first, I know I did! It was enjoyable to walk around, see and chat with so many in a relaxed and informal setting. The kids seemed to have a particularly good time on the inflatables and the adults seemed to have just as good a time watching them! The food and drinks were great. It was a warm day, but a slight breeze, snow cones and some shade kept us comfortable. The alumni of Redemptorist High School appreciated the open house held by Cristo Rey so they could sit up in the gym bleachers and reminisce of their conquests and exploits! Congratulations to all our raffle winners! Remember, there are many more calendar raffle drawings to come. Now that I know I am not going to Ireland any time soon, I can continue to concentrate on, and remind you of, some still-to-come events in our parish over the next month. On Friday night, July 15th, we will hold a Memorial Mass for our beloved Fr. Patrick Power who passed away in May, just short of his 50th anniversary of priesthood. We had been planning a joint celebration of his anniversary with Fr. Terry, but God had other plans. Although he will not participate in our earthly celebrations, we are sure he is smiling down his Irish blessings upon his classmates and us and we will have a fitting celebration of his rather accomplished and long life. Of course, today is Father’s Day. We wish all our Fathers a blessed and neck-tie free day! We remember all our Fathers, living and deceased, and thank God for gifting us with them and putting “skin” on our understanding of God our Father who watches over us and protects us always. This coming Thursday in St. Louis, Fr. Terry McCloskey will join his ordination classmates for the 50th anniversary celebration of their ordination as priests. Father Terry and his classmates were ordained at a very exciting time in the Church, right after the Second Vatican Council. It was a time of great hope and change. They navigated the changes wonderfully and helped guide all of us to a realization that the people in the pews were not spectators in worship and not at the bottom of a hierarchical pyramid concerning the life of the Church, but active participants in the Mass and a priestly people of God in their own right! Congratulations Fr. Terry. We love you! Our parish celebration for Fr. Terry will be Sunday, July 17th at the 11:30 Mass with a reception to follow. So, it continues to be an active and event-filled early summer. In between your activities and amidst the hot weather, I hope you are finding time for rest, relaxation and “re-creation” to reboot your energies and recharge your spirit! There is so much to be thankful for in Christ, who first said to us: “Come to me all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will give you rest.” Fr. Gary This coming weekend I too will be in St. Louis, along with a few parishioners, decked out in our “Make Her Known” T-shirts and commemorative pins, to take part in the nationwide 150th anniversary celebration of the entrustment of the OLPH icon to The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 June 19, 2016 Young Adults Around Our Campus Give Drink to the Thirsty: Formula Drive, Talk and Letters to Mothers Redemptorist Social Services Center Ending hunger in America is a goal that is within our grasp if everyone is involved. Many, many thanks to Center Board President Steve Burmeister and his son Brett for sponsoring such a fantastic and successful event for the Center!
