We were invited by Joe Browell. We started attending Wednesday morning Greeters meetings. The warmth and support we received was so appreciated. Starting a new business can be very scary. Mike and I invested our life savings, countless hours and many a sleepless night into our business. With so much as risk; failure wasn’t an option. I am so thankful for the business referrals and relationships I’ve gained from The Chamber. To my surprise in 2012 Apland’s received the Chamber’s “Small Business of the Year Award”. What a humbling experience. Now I have the title “ Chamber Member of the Month”. Wow! The Grants Pass Chamber does so much for our community. With so many deserving members to choose from; it’s an honor to be chosen. I feel privileged to be a part of the chamber family. A Better Way To Light Your Business A typical retail establishment operates its lighting more than 5,000 hours a year. With that many hours of operation, there’s ample opportunity to realize savings from energy-efficient lighting improvements. Besides saving money each month on your electric bill, upgrading to high-efficiency lighting can make your workplace safer and reduce maintenance costs. It can also make your workforce more comfortable and productive. The right lighting can improve the appeal and color of displayed merchandise and help drive sales. Pacific Power and Energy Trust of Oregon team up to connect you with contractors, cash incentives and ways to make your business more profitable by making it more energy efficient. Several new ones have moved in just in the past couple years, such as Griess Family Brews, Climate City Brewing, The Haul, Pour Authority and Frank N Stene’s. There is also the ever-popular Wild River Brewery that has been a local favorite for many years. Some make craft brews onsite while others host microbrews on tap. But what exactly is a craft brewery? One distinguishing feature is their size. Craft brewers are small and independently owned, producing less beer than corporate breweries. Another distinction is their use of ingredients. They often use traditional ones, such as malted barley, but also add unique flavors for new tastes. They thrive on innovation and experimental brews. For instance, Griess Family Brews has created Jalepeño Amber and Pumpkin Pie beers! Many craft brewers work at brewpubs, which is a term used for a pub or restaurant that brews their beer onsite. We talked with brewmasters Travis Griess of Griess Family Brews and Brandon Crews of Climate City Brewing Co. to get a better look at craft brewing in Grants Pass. Griess Family Brews is locally owned and operated and they have eight taps right now to host four main beers and four to rotate out as Travis creates different flavors. He chooses his ingredients 14 based on what he likes, recommendations that he gets from others or to expand their selection for customers. Brandon, born and raised in Grants Pass, spent time studying in England after graduation and brewing in Portland, OR before returning home and joining Climate City. He brews flavors to compliment their up-scale pub food and pizza, making some standard styles as well as creating seasonal and specialty brews. When choosing ingredients for his brews, Brandon tells us, “Just like a chef, it’s about having an idea and knowing your ingredients enough to turn that idea into a great beer.” Craft brewing is a matter of learning different flavors and trying them out. There is trial and error, but Travis says it well when he shared, “It’s fun when you try one and it tastes really good.” That success is what keeps them going. Both brewmasters enjoy the process of not only making beer, but creating fantastic flavors for beer lovers to try. Seeing the brewery scene grow in Grants Pass is exciting for locals and tourists who enjoy tasting new beers. Having more microbrews in town increases the collaboration rather than the competition. Travis is thrilled when new places come in because, “It’s not competition. It’s reinforcement.” New places means more brewers to share ideas with and more variety for customers. Brandon says that “Grants Pass and Southern Oregon as a region has also been somewhat of an untapped area,” but thanks to places like Griess and Climate City, Grants Pass is “tapping” into the microbrew industry and will no doubt see it grow in the years to come.
