Vladimir Montes JCPenney Irene Muro The Oldtimers Foundation Marco Soto Fiesta Taxi * Past President Health Insurance Marketplace Beginning October, 2013 the State of California will have officially entered into an online health insurance marketplace that allows individuals who are looking for health insurance coverage to shop for plans and compare them by benefits, quality, and pricing. People who are under 65 and currently do not have health coverage through their employer or medicare, can shop for a health plan in the marketplace in the State of California. In accordance to the deadline of October 1, 2013, employers should have provided notices to their employees on the health insurance marketplace coverage options in California under the Covered California. The Chamber of Commerce emailed their members on the deadline and links to the Department of Labor’s information on the law and model notices to that employers can provide to their existing and/or new employees. Special activities for the event include a children’s hand-made piñata contest, a restaurants and residents menudo contest. The children’s piñata contest held on Saturday, October 5 at 2:00 p.m. at the Main Stage. First place children’s piñata contest wins $100.00, and second place wins $50.00. Children participating the contest are given free ride passes to the festival’s amusement rides. For the first time this year, Restaurants competing in the menudo contest are featured in the KTLA, Channel 5 Morning Show for Thursday, October 3. The residents menudo contest held on Sunday, October 6 at 8:30 a.m. in front of the main stage located at Gage Ave. and Pacific Blvd. First place winner for the residents menudo contest is $350.00, second place $250.00 and third place $100.00. Also included as part of the event is a three-day Sidewalk Sale for the businesses along Pacific Blvd. Visitors are encouraged to visit the local businesses along the downtown area. Special corporate displays include Charter Communications, Disneyland Resort, Manzanita Sol, State Farm Insurance, Blue Shield, Metro PCS, Wells Fargo Bank, Boost Mobile, plus retail commercial booths, arts and crafts, food, live entertainment on the main stage, a petting zoo, and amusement rides for all ages. This year’s media sponsors include KTLA, Channel 5, Telemundo KVEA, Channel 52, Radio Stations La Raza 97.9 FM, Latino 96.3 FM, Radio Disney AM 1110, Exitos 93.9 FM, plus Super Estrella 107.1 FM, El Gato 103.1 FM and Jose 97.5 FM. Other media sponsors include La Opinion Newspaper, El Aviso Magazine, The Wave Newspaper, Hoy Newspaper and TVC Magazine. It is estimated the total media advertisement is over half-million worth. Plans Underway for Fabulous HolidayChristmas Lane Parade Plans are underway for the long-time community tradition of the Huntington Park’s 63rd Annual “Fabulous Holiday— Christmas Lane Parade.” The Parade is scheduled for Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. along Pacific Blvd. in downtown Huntington Park. The community tradition features marching bands, specialty entries, equestrian units, self -propelled floats and horse-drawn carriages. Every year the Parade attracts hundreds of families throughout the city and surrounding communities. The event is annually presented by The Greater Huntington Park Area Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the City of Huntington Park. Businesses have an opportunity to advertise their business by sponsoring a marching band, float, or a horse-drawn carriage. Page 2 Downtown Revitalization Project Your Chamber of Commerce was pleased to meet with representatives of Primestor Development on their studies for a Downtown Strategic Revitalization program for Pacific Blvd. The company for the past weeks has outreached to several entities of the community and held public forums to receive information on how to revitalize the shopping district area that encompasses the streets between Florence Ave. to Slauson Ave. For further details, please feel free to visit the city’s website at www.huntingtonpark.org or call Primestor Development representative Ricardo Meza at 310-652-1177. Volume 1, Issue 2 Why Join Your Local Chamber When asked “Are You A Member of the Chamber?” several businesses may answer they are unaware about the benefits of joining a Chamber of Commerce. Others may respond with their busy schedule, they do not have the time to participate or attend any of the Chamber’s activities. With joining the Chamber of Commerce members are informed of the latest trends within the community and local marketplace. It is best to consider the principal action of the Chamber of Commerce is to serve its members. Businesses that belong to the organization are in essence the life-blood that sustains the organization. In addition, its members serve as a support group in helping others become successful.
