It will mark the third straight season the two teams have met at Plainsman Park. The Panthers are looking to rebound after a strange weekend at Towson. The normally reliable bullpen, gave up leads in three straight games at the hands of the Tigers. However, the offense kept things going as it has all season, belting 11 home runs over the weekend. At the midpoint of the season, the Panthers have hit 54 home runs, just 23 shy of the school’s all-time record of 77 set in 2000. Junior Ryan Fleming, who has already hit 11 home runs this year, is just two shy of being on the top 10 single season list and 10 shy of tying the single season mark of 21 set by Chad Smith in 2000. Junior Rob Lind led the Panthers in four games last week, batting .706 (12-for-17) with nine runs scored, a pair of home runs, six RBIs and a 1.059 slugging percentage. Sophomore Brandon Williams performed equally as well at the plate, going 9-for-21 (.429) with four home runs, 12 RBIs, six runs scored and 22 total bases for a 1.048 slugging percentage. Senior Bradley Logan’s streak of reaching safely in 41 straight games came to an end on Friday night as Towson held him hitless. However, he did creep up several career categories over the weekend. On Sunday, Logan played in his 200th game, becoming just the seventh Panther to reach that milestone. He also added seven total bases over the weekend to up his career total to 411, just four shy of Josh Vandiver (1999-02) for the all-time school record. With 28 regular season games to play, he is on pace to own nine school records when he graduates. Freshman Michael Moch will make his first collegiate start on Tuesday against the Tigers. Moch has made 6 appearances this season and pitching 9.1 innings, sporting a 1-1 record, along with a save. THE CENTURY MARK Head coach Greg Frady reached the 100-win plateau at Georgia State during the March 6th doubleheader against North Carolina Central. It took the fewest games of any coach in Panther history to reach that feat. Frady enters this week’s game 112-91 and only trails Mike Hurst, who finished his Panther tenure in 2006 with 293 career victories for the most victories in school history. Frady is just one win shy of the 300th of his coaching career. ON THE VERGE OF HISTORY Senior Bradley Logan is becoming one of the statistically greatest student-athletes in Georgia State history. Logan, who has been a starter since stepping on campus in the fall of 2006, has the chance to graduate in May with ten career records, not to mention standing in the top 10 in several single season categories. Among those is the singleseason hits record which he set in 2008 with 85. He already owns the career hit by pitch record with 31 and took over the runs scored record on March 6th against NCCU. Against New Mexico State, he moved to the top of the list in RBIs and sacrifice flies. Before Friday night’s game with Towson, Logan had reached safely in 41 straight games dating back to May 1st of last year. The Tigers held Logan hitless to end the streak that was the longest in the nation at the time. YOUR HONOR, YOUR HONOR Several Panthers have been named to some of the most prestigious lists in the country already this season. Sophomore Justin Malone, who was named to a pair of freshman all-america list last year, was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Watch List earlier this season. He led the Panthers with seven saves during the 2009 season. Junior Carter Sackett was named to the Coleman Company Johnny Bench Award Watch List as one of the top catchers in the country. It marked the third year in a row that a Panther has been named to the preseason list. Senior Carl Moniz was recently named to the Brooks Wallace Preseason Watch List as one of the top shortstops in the country. Moniz marks the third player in the last three years to be named to the list. Bradley Logan earned the honor in 2009, while JeanMichel Rochon-Salvas was named to the list in 2008. “NO SOUP” RATHER RUNS FOR YOU Sophomore Justin Malone has become known simply as “The Closer” around Georgia State baseball. Malone was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award Watch List after earning a pair of freshman all-america honors during his freshman season. On the opening weekend of CAA play, Malone dominated Old Dominion, earning a win and a save. On Friday night, he came in with one out and a runner on first in the bottom of the ninth and immediately recorded a double play to earn his first save of the season. He followed on Sunday, going 3.1 innings to allow the Panthers to rally with 11 runs over the last two innings to earn a 16-10 win and the series against the Monarchs. He had not allowed a run dating back to April 11th of last season. His stretch of 21.0 scoreless innings set a new school record, surpassing David Hawkin’s 2002 total of 15.2 scoreless innings. This season, he is 2-1 with a save, throwing 18.2 innings and holding opponents to a .222 batting average, to go along with 17 strikeouts. He leads the team with 13 appearances. Last season he led the bullpen to a school record 19 saves, seven of which he recorded himself. In the CAA Championship, Malone earned a pair of saves and a win, earning all-tournament honors. It helped the Panthers finish the year 32-1 when leading after 8 innings. The team is 9-2 when leading after eight innings this season, with another four games being called after seven innings by the NCAA Sportsmanship Policy that the Panthers were leading. OH WHAT A MONTH The Panthers were red-hot in the month of March, going 14-6, though ironically losing the first and last games of the month. The 14 wins were the most the Panthers have ever recorded in a single month, surpassing the 13 games Georgia State won last May. AND THE OSCAR GOES TO... Who knew the Academy Awards were a multiple-day affair. After the Oscars were handed out on March 7th, junior Mark Micowski scored the collegiate baseball version of an Oscar with a handful of national honors on March 8th and 9th: • NCBWA National Player of the Week • CAA Player of the Week • College Baseball Foundation National All-Star Line-up • CollegeBaseballInsider.com Northeast Region National Player of the Week Micowski led the Panthers to a 4-1 week, batting .636 (14-for-22), with 14 runs scored, two home runs, 10 RBIs, 27 total bases, five doubles, one triple, a 1.227 slugging percentage, .679 on base percentage and a pair of steals to go along with several school records. In game one of the series with North Carolina Central, the Haddam, Conn. native, hit for the cycle in the first four innings, finishing the game 7-for-8 with four runs scored and seven RBIs. He set a school record for at bats with eight, as well as hits with seven. He helped the team break the school runs record of 32 (which was broken again in the series finale on Sunday), as the team set records for doubles, hits, at bats, RBIs and triples. He tied the school record with three doubles and 15 total bases. During the doubleheader on March 6th, he went 3-for-4 with three runs scored in game one. In the series finale, he set the GSU runs scored record with six, going 2-for-5 at the plate. He helped the Panthers score a school-record 103 runs on the weekend in the fourgame series with the Eagles. AND THE OSCAR FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR... Redshirt-sophomore Joey Wood followed the lead of his teammate Mark Micowski by earning CAA Player of the Week last week. Wood had a stellar week at the plate, batting .640 (16-for-25) with 29 total bases for a 1.160 slugging percentage last week. He belted three home runs and had 14 RBIs, leading the Panthers to a 4-1 week, including a series victory at New Mexico State, the farthest west the Panthers have ever traveled. He scored 12 times to go along with four doubles, a walk, three hit by pitches and a .667 on base percentage. He also added in a sacrifice fly. He started the week going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the Panthers 13-6 win over UNC Asheville. On Wednesday, he went 4-for-6 with a run scored and three RBIs as the Panthers swept the Bulldogs, 18-2. After going 1-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs in the opener against New Mexico State, a 13-2 Panther victory, the redshirt-sophomore went 1-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs in Georgia State’s tough 12-11 loss to the Aggies on Saturday. He concluded the week with a 5-for-7 performance with six runs scored and six RBIs in the series finale, a 30-24 Panther victory on Sunday. Wood belted two home runs, including a grand slam as Georgia State tied an NCAA record with three grand slams in the game. His six runs scored tied the school record set just over a week ago. Georgia State Baseball Notes, Page 4 BUCHANAN’S OPENING ACT PRESEASON RECOGNITION Junior David Buchanan opened CAA play with a stellar pitching performance that earned him CAA Pitcher of the Week honors. The Peachtree City native pitched 8.1 innings and did not allow a run until the ninth inning of Georgia State’s 2-1 win over Old Dominion. Buchanan struck out 12, while not walking a single batter. He struck out the side in order in both the first and sixth innings. The win helped the Panthers win the series, which could be pivotal to making the CAA Championship in May. The recognition the Panthers received in the preseason national publications was unrivaled to previous years. Rivals.com named Ryan Moore the Best Starting Pitcher in the CAA after predicting the Panthers to finish third in the conference. Collegiate Baseball Today named head coach Greg Frady the “Hot Coach” in the league and the Panthers series with Florida State earlier this year the third best non-conference series in the CAA this season. SEBaseball.com also named the Panthers pitching staff the second best in the CAA, while the outfield was ranked the third best. A RECORD NUMBER OF RECORDS For the second straight season, it appears as though the Georgia State baseball team is attempting to re-write the record books. Last season, the team set or tied 22 records. Already the season, the Panthers have broken an old record 23 times and will surely add on to that list as the season continues. The Panthers were receiving votes in Collegiate Baseball’s Preseason Fabulous 40 Poll to start the season. SEBaseball.com had the Panthers ranked 16th in its Non-Big Three Top 25 Poll (that excluded the SEC, ACC and Conference USA) to open the season. The only schools ranked ahead of Georgia State from the CAA are UNC Wilmington (11th) and James Madison (8th). SEBaseball also had the Panthers ranked 42nd in the south- Georgia State Baseball Notes, Page 5 east, stating: “The Panthers lost a lot from last year’s NCAA Regional Club, but their newcomers make this team their most talented yet.” OH CANADA For more than a decade, the Georgia State baseball program has always seemed to have a little bit of a Canadian feel to it and this season is no different. Senior Carl Moniz (Laval, Quebec) is the lone returnee, however, he is joined by fellow Canadians Bryan Condotta (Mississauga, Ontario) and Ryan Fleming (Whitby, Ontario) on the team this season. Moniz has earned Canadian Baseball Network All-Canada honorable mention honors in each of the last two seasons. Last season, Marc Mimeault (Candiac, Quebec) finished his career as one of the most storied players in the history of the program. Mimeault finished his career with a school-record career .364 batting average, after belting 14 home runs during his senior year and being named to the All-Canada First Team. Paul Schlosser was one of the first Canadians to receive recognition at Georgia State, earning 2000 All-Canadian First Team honors as well. Jean-Michel Rochon-Salvas, who graduated in 2008, holds several all-time records in the Georgia State history book. The Canadian connection is helping the Panthers to a lot of wins this season. Moniz is batting .384 with a .576 slugging percentage, while Fleming currently is hitting a team-high .452 with 11 home runs and a team-leading 45 RBIs. He belted grand slams in back-to-back games against North Carolina Central the first weekend of March. I COME FROM A LAND DOWN UNDER Junior Aidan Francis made a splash during his sophomore year, helping to lead the Panthers to their first CAA Championship. The native of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, spent the first three-fourths of the season in the Georgia State bullpen. However, Francis was moved into the Friday night starting role with about two weeks to go in the regular season and flourished. He made his best start of the season last week, going 6.0 innings in the Panthers 14-4 win over Austin Peay. Francis allowed seven hits and two runs, while striking out three for the victory. The first Friday night Francis pitched, he went 8 2/3 innings against VCU, earning the win after allowing just two earned runs and striking out 10. For his effort, he earned CAA Pitcher of the Week honors. He is 2-2 this season and has struck out 28 in just 29.2 innings pitched. Along with Justin Malone, he threw the Panthers first shutout of the 2010 season, a 14-0 blanking of North Carolina Central on March 6th. TEAM OF THE YEAR For the first time in school history, Georgia State was honored as Georgia Dugout 2009 Team of the Year at the club’s annual banquet several weeks ago. Ironically, the host of the event was Tommy Barber, a Georgia State baseball graduate from the 1970’s and supporter of Panther baseball. YOUR JOHN HANCOCK PLEASE... Georgia State signed four student-athletes to a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period. The group was made up of four pitchers who will be on campus starting next fall. The 2009-2010 early signing class includes: Sam Agnew-Wieland RHP 6-1 175 lbs. R/R Marietta, Ga. (Wheeler HS) Tyler Claburn RHP 6-3 190 lbs. R/R Peachtree City, Ga. (Wallace-Dothan JC/Starr’s Mill HS) Jake Dyer RHP 6-1 195 lbs. R/R Conyers, Ga. (Georgia Perimeter JC/Salem HS) Cole Outz RHP 6-6 208 lbs. R/R Warner Robins, Ga. (Young Harris JC/Warner Robins HS) Sam Agnew-Wieland Sam will graduate from Wheeler HS in Marietta, where he earned Cobb All-County First Team honors last season, while also being named to the Georgia Dugout Club Top 100 and Region 6-AAAAA All-Region team. He finished his junior season with a 6-3 record along with a 3.20 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 63.3 innings pitched. Tyler Claburn Claburn will come to GSU with two years of eligibility remaining after a pair of seasons at Wallace Community College in Dothan, Ala., playing for former major league catcher Macky Sasser. The native of Peachtree City, Ga. played at Starr’s Mill HS. Last season, he made 18 appearances, throwing 60.3 innings, while holding opponents to a .207 batting average and striking out 50, walking just 20 batters. Jake Dyer Dyer will have two years of eligibility remaining when he joins Georgia State after two seasons at nearby Georgia Perimeter, playing for coach Danny Blue. A native of Conyers, Ga., Dyer played for coach Mike Phiel and Chris Davis at Salem HS. During his senior season, Dyer went 10-3 with a 1.67 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 71 innings pitched. He finished high school with the most wins in school history (19) second most strikeouts (145) in a career, as well as the second lowest ERA (1.88) in the history of the school.
