Our Flea Market began with over 30,000 items that can be used in every aspect of our daily living. The Flea Market is open NOW – on Saturday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 8:30 to Noon with a Bag Sale. Stop down after liturgy today and find yourselves a bargain for something you have been wanting for years. Maybe you will find a surprise that will “make your day!” CATHOLIC SCHOOL: 168 YEARS! Our Parochial School bells will ring on Monday of this week and for the ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY EIGHTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR, the Parish Family of St. Mary of the Assumption will provide a well-rounded and multi-dimensional education for all its students. Our school is a great asset to the Parish Family, not only for those who attend, but also for all families in the community. We recommit ourselves as a Parish Family that pledges to offer CATHOLIC EDUCATION to all those who value the importance of value centered learning for the children of their family. SCHOOL CONSIDERATIONS LABOR DAY LITURGY AS USUAL As we bring the summer to a traditional close with the celebration on Labor Day on Monday, September 7, we welcome all parishioners and their friends to join us for the 10:00 a.m. liturgy. This will end our “Summer Trilogy of Holidays” as we have already celebrated such very special liturgies on Memorial Day and Independence Day. “PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN” We remind all those who are IN MINISTY that they must, according to Diocesan policy, attend a “Protecting God’s Children Workshop.” We try to facilitate this process by sponsoring the Workshop here in our own Parish Family ON September 22th. Simply call the rectory to register for this Workshop and find all the details necessary for meeting the standards set up by the Diocese of Pittsburgh. BULLETIN and LITURGY AID - VIA EMAIL If you or anyone you know would like the bulletin and the Liturgy Aid e-mailed, we are now accepting subscriptions. Please sign up by sending an email with the subject line SUBSCRIBE to [email protected]. St. Mary's will not sell or give out your e-mail address. You also may unsubscribe at anytime - there will be directions with each e-mail. (1) During the lunch hour, since the children recreate outside in the back parking lot, we close off the entrance that leads around the back of the school. Vehicles should not be left in the back parking lot during this time, since we cannot be responsible for possible damage that might occur with all the activity of the children during their required lunch time. (2) With the students eating their lunch in Marian Hall each day, NO GROUP will be allowed to begin any activities in the Hall until 1:00 p.m. All the adults overseeing the children are registered in the National Database with their clearances. Other parishioners must stay out of Marian Hall until the students have left that area to meet the requirements demanded by the Safe Environment Verification. CATHOLIC SCHOOL ENVELOPE All registered parishioners will notice that this month’s envelope packet contains one entitled “Opening of Catholic School.” We remind those who have a commitment to catholic education that the monies from this envelope stay here in our Parish Family, and help those who seek financial assistance. PARENTING POINTERS “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15) As children grow older they often balk at doing “religious” stuff with their family. Be creative about inviting your children into faith experiences. Ask what THEY think would be meaningful ways to “serve the Lord.” It might seem crazy, but try it once. Home with the Lord Remember Lord and welcome into your Kingdom those who have died and have gone before us marked in the sign of faith, especially Paul Horwat, father of Mary Beth Scott and Kevin Matschner. Please remember to pray for the consolation of their loved ones. BANNS OF MARRIAGE III. Kevin Devinney (St. Mary) & Amy Tappe (St. Bonaventure) RCIA Would you like to become a Catholic? We have many opportunities to grow in our faith, but one of the best ways is to be an evangelizer. A good way to evangelize is to encourage our non-Catholic friends who are seeking a closer relationship with God to participate in the RCIA process. Invite them to “come and see” what the church teaches and the traditions that Catholics treasure. Invite them to join us after the 9:00 a.m. Mass beginning in the fall, in an atmosphere where they will be welcomed and feel at home. This process is also appropriate for adult Catholics who would like to prepare for first Eucharist or confirmation. For more information, call Jim Finn at the rectory 412-486-4100. A VOCATION VIEW Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Choose to follow and serve God with your whole life. (John 6:60-69) PRAY FOR OUR SEMINARIANS As the new school year begins, please keep our seminarians in your prayers: David J. Egan - Theological College, Washington, DC. Kevin O’Connor - St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, MD. Dan Waruszewski - Theological College, Washington, DC. GREETERS Any Greeters who do not have access to the internet can pick up a copy of their schedule in the Ushers Room. TRAVELING VOCATION CHALICE Did you ever consider hosting our traveling Vocation Chalice in your home? It serves as a reminder to you and your family to pray for an increase of church vocations. A booklet of suggested prayers is included. Shut-ins are welcome to host it. A member of our vocation council will bring it to your home. Call Jim Finn at 412-4856-4100, if interested. Page Four RELIGIOUS FORMATION Faith Sharing for Twenty-first Sunday Ordinary Time In this week’s gospel, Peter says to Jesus, “Master, to whom shall we go? YOU have the words of eternal life.” Peter’s obvious awareness of the power of Jesus’ word seems to indicate that he would not want to follow any other “master.” What words of Jesus have touched your heart that draws you to him? Do you hear him say to you, “I have called you FRIEND!” (John 15:15) Sacraments Grow In Faith Together Families of children going to Grade 2, and Youth going to Grade 8, we encourage you to keep on with the journal page with the messages that God’s Word gives each Sunday during the summer months. Let Jesus’ word be a guiding message for YOUR life. Faith Formation for Children Who Attend Public Schools Continue to use the booklet Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families weekly as you prepare for and come to Mass. See pages 110-111 this week. The memorable farewell weekend that I had on July 11/12 still fills my heart with beautiful thoughts about the splendid generosity of so many of the parishioners at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish Family who stood in line in Marian Hall to offer the best of their wishes to my coming retirement. Thinking this was the last of the moments associated with my retirement … I was then surprisingly overwhelmed by the “Testimonial Dinner” last Thursday evening that combined all the greatest moments of my “16 years less 16 days” in one unforgettable celebration that summarized our parish life together! I would like to thank all of those persons who offered me a financial gift with their card or best wishes. Combining this with those parishioners who gave to me very appropriate gifts has made my every day of retirement a joy as I spend time opening the gifts, delighting in the cards and reading all the very personal expressions that so many have extended to me. It is going to take me quite a long time to get to all of these cards and gifts, but I want to assure everyone who has given me a personal gift of any type that I will make an individual response to you as soon as I am able to work through this process. There is no doubt that the financial support offered by so many of you will help to sustain the needs of my retired life for a long time to come; and the gifts that were given have found a place in my little “garret” already. My new abode seems like home now since it is filled with so many of the memories of our time together in the best Parish Family in the entire Diocese. What a journey we took together! Your dedication to the Faith … your commitment to your Parish Family … and your love of the Lord Jesus … have left an indelible impact on my life that will never be forgotten!
