The Quintessential Alaska
The Iditarod Start Trek
March 5 – March 9, 2016
Four days, four nights following the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog
Race from Anchorage, Willow, Mt McKinley and Rainy Pass
Beginning in Anchorage, the Iditarod Start Trek gives guests four days
of winter adventure and a full taste of the excitement surrounding the
Iditarod Sled Dog Race. The Trek’s focus and pace is upon the dog race
as it departs Anchorage and until it crosses over the Alaska Range of
mountains. The overall experience gives a person an opportunity to see
Alaska in its finest season, meet the interesting people that live here and
participate in a multitude of winter activities.
This 4-day Sky Trek adventure includes observing the race first hand,
hands-on experience mushing a dog team from 4-time Champion Martin
Buser’s Happy Trails Kennels. Also included is flight seeing with a grand
tour around the highest peak in North America, Mount McKinley, where
you will marvel at its high granite cliffs and glacier filled valleys. Enjoy
aerial views as you fly to the Skwentna or Rainy Pass checkpoint on the
Iditarod trail.
Overnight accommodations will be at Happy Trails B&B in Big Lake, home
of 4-time Champion Martin Buser. Delicious meals will be prepared in a
variety of unique locations.
The Quintessential Alaska
Day 1 will focus on the Iditarod Ceremonial Start in downtown Anchorage,
where we will have a front row view of the race start and the excitement
surrounding it. After the exciting race start and a fabulous lunch at the
Glacier Brewhouse in downtown Anchorage, we will continue on a scenic
ski plane flight (weather permitting) over the glacier filled valleys of the
Chugach Mountains spying on Moose, Dall sheep and mountain goats, or a
flight to Mt. McKinley before landing for a celebration dinner Alaska Style.
Day 2 will focus on the Iditarod Re-start in Willow. The afternoon will
begin with a trailside lunch and optional snowmobile rides along the trail.
Day 3 will focus on flying from Big Lake along the Iditarod Trail to follow the
race. We will land to enjoy a trailside lunch prepared by your pilot/guides,
and to watch the mushers resting as they pass through a checkpoint.
Depending upon weather, the race progress and runway conditions we
may land at Skwentna, Finger Lake and/or Rainy Pass.
Day 4 will include a full day of dog mushing from Happy Trails Kennels
home training grounds. After a delicious breakfast and race updates we
will tour the kennel, meet the dogs, harness teams and head out on a
private system of groomed trails where all guests will have the chance to
drive their own team. A catered campfire lunch will be featured halfway
through the day. Be ready for some serious fun and excitement this day!
Day 5: Breakfast and transportation from Big Lake to Anchorage will be
