Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece was artfully brought to the stage by the cast of incredible student actors who worked tirelessly to bring storybook characters to life. “And All That Jazz” Event A Success On Friday, May 6, Limestone held “And All That Jazz”. This event combines the talents of Choir students, Band students, Speech performers, and Food Service Occupations students. Through these combined efforts, students put on a great show, dinner and performance for local community members and parents. On the menu this year was fresh fruit displays, vegetable trays, BBQ meatballs, chicken and beef kabobs, wild rice, garlic rolls and a delicious chocolate fountain display. Groups performing during the event were the Blue Notes, White Noise, Jazz Band and Performance in the Round from the Speech Team. Guests were invited to get up and dance during performances and many did just that. The guests thoroughly enjoyed both the food and performances, and all students involved represented Limestone Community High School very well. Volume 1, Issue 1 Term 4 News PAGE 7 Page 7 2016 Prom—A Shabby Chic Prom This year’s prom theme was “A Shabby Chic Prom” and was held April 23, 2016 at Ravina on the Lakes in Peoria. First Row Left to Right: Tristin O’Neill, crown bearers Cayden Thomason and Lilian Driscoll, Rylee Barth. Congratulations to the Class of 2016 for hosting a memorable prom. PAGE 8 Volume 1, Issue 1 Term 4 News Page 8 Singin’ In The Spring The Spring Choral Concert, held on April 26, featured musical theater and movie music arrangements. As in years past, the choir closed the concert with their traditional arrangement of “Bridge Over Troubled Waters.” A number of outstanding seniors in the choir program were also honored at the concert with a variety of annual awards. Teressa Naples was the recipient of the Director’s Award, which is presented to choir the student who shows outstanding leadership, helpfulness, independence, teamwork, and commitment to the choir program. She was also awarded Theoritician of the Year for her outstanding grasp of music theory and ability to apply that knowledge to performance. The Blue Thespian award, awarded for excellence in acting was given to Alli Davis, and the Choir Student of the Year award, which recognizes commitment to improving the choral program through musical excellence, leadership, encouragement of others, and a high level of musical performance, was given to Meghan Thomson. Finally, Isaac Simmons was named Performing Arts Student of the Year for his participation in many different musical and dramatic performance opportunities and his commitment to excellence. The Sounds of Spring On Thursday, April 21st, the Limestone Band Program held their annual spring concert. The Symphonic Band opened the concert with Overture on a Shaker Tune, a piece based on the Appalachian folk song Simple Gifts. Senior saxophonist and drum major Khrista Towle, who will be majoring in music education when she attends Western Illinois University next year, had the opportunity to conduct the band for Frank Ticheli's Peace. The Symphonic Band also performed Rhythm Machine by Timothy Broege and Ancient Voices by Michael Sweeney. Following the Symphonic Band's performance, Percussion Ensemble played several selections for both traditional and non-traditional percussion instruments. They opened their segment of the concert playing metal garbage bins for the piece Fresh Trash, played a short Latin piece for xylophone, marimba, and auxiliary percussion called Katie's Bossa, and finished with a keyboard percussion arrangement of The Easy Winners, a ragtime piece originally written for piano by Scott Joplin. Following Percussion Ensemble, the Wind Ensemble gave another performance of the three selections that had earned them a high division 1 ranking at IHSA Organizational Contest a week earlier. This program included Be Thou My Vision, an arrangement of a traditional hymn with an Irish flair; Second Prelude, a transcription of a piano piece by the great American composer George Gershwin; and Hymn to the Infinite Sky, a symphonic poem by Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa. After the 2016 Marching Wind Ensemble concluded their portion of the concert, the band program's 18 gradRockets uating seniors were recognized. All the students then combined into one large conField Show cert band to perform a suite from the movie The Dark Knight and Instant Concert, a Announced medley of many familiar popular and folk tunes. Additionally, the LCHS Winter Details on Guard gave one final performance of their 2016 competitive show, "Between the page 14! Lines," and parents and students mingled in the cafeteria for punch and cookies to reflect on yet another successful year. Term 4 News PAGE 9 Those Who Make a Difference The annual “Those Who Make a Difference” ceremony was held on Sunday, April 24. The purpose of this program is to recognize members of the LCHS student body who are often times overlooked for their daily contributions to Limestone. Each LCHS staff member was given the opportunity to nominate students for the difference they make to Limestone. Congratulations to these students for making a difference! Thank you to Mrs. Jamie Kocher and Mrs. Julie Powers for organizing and coordinating this outstanding program. The following students were all recognized at the ceremony: Victoria Allen, Dalton Baker, Antonio Barron, Trey Behm, Aleisha Behymer, Eli Benja, Amyia Binion, Kayliegh Bock, Joe Boyer, Hannah Briggs, Kimberly Burke, Mariah Burns, Kyle Callahan, Sara Carr, Matt Carr, Courtney Carroll, Liv Clark, Kaitlyn Cooper, Brandon Crotz, Tyanna Daniels, Allis Davis, Chandler Dunaway, Bailee Dunne, Tyler Evans, Emily Farris, Lauren Franklin, Jayde French, Hailee Griffith, Marcus Harris, Lauren Huffman, Cameron Johnson, Victoria Johnson, Dennis Karl, Ally Kaufmann, Sophia Kirchgessner, Sierra Krus, William Kubic, Brock Kumlander, Kaylin Lane, Nick Lepretre-Jaynes, Phil Marx, Luke Mathews, Chelsea McTeague, Angie Miller, Jenna Mirande, Makayla Moore, McCaulie Morgan, Ruby Nelson, Brytnee Newman, Bryce Newton, Cody Nute, Quinn Robinson, Katelyn Romero, John Ryan, Emma Scarcliff, Luke Schmidt, Holly Shempf, Issac Simmons, Samantha Terrell, Taylor Thomas, Jawhan Tillman, Qualaja Weaver, James Welton, Maddysun Whitelow, Victoria Williams, Jenna Wolland, and Heather Yepsen. Master Sergeant Waltz Saves a Life Every year, the day of the Military Ball is eventful for the Limestone AFJROTC instructors and cadets. This year there was even more excitement than usual. On May 7th the last thing on Master Sergeant John Waltz’s mind was his first aid training, but fortunately it came to him when he needed it. Toward the end of dinner, Richard Crady started to choke. His granddaughter, Abby Crady, raced to Master Sergeant Waltz to get help. Without hesitation, Master Sergeant Waltz rushed over to Mr. Crady and surveyed the situation. After informing Mr. Crady that he was going to, Sergeant Waltz executed a textbook Heimlich Maneuver and dislodged a piece of chicken. Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic and AFJROTC mom, Danelle Geraci, was attending the event and was the first medical professional at the scene. She commented “Undoubtedly, Sergeant Waltz saved Mr. Crady’s life. He would not be here today if not for John.” On May 11th, Advanced Medical Transport presented Master Sergeant Waltz with a Community Resuscitation Award. Asked for his thoughts, Master Sergeant Waltz said, “You just have to act on it. You have to do the right thing. You have to make sure they're not breathing, take the proper steps and then act.” At the same ceremony, Mr. Crady was more philosophical, "What do you say? How can you say thank you for (someone) saving your life? I have no words." Congratulations and thank you, Master Sergeant Waltz. Limestone is lucky to have such a fine professional in its midst. PAGE 10 Term 4 News MOMS WHO CARE: Amazing First Year The community support of Limestone’s outreach program, Moms Who Care, has resulted in amazing support of our students. From backpacks and notebooks to pens, pencils and highlighters to Prom dresses and tuxes, the donations from individuals, community organizations and area businesses have allowed MWC to help meet the needs over 100 students. In fact, the program is already moving to a bigger room. Storing the hundreds (literally) of bottles and tubes of shampoo, bath soap and toothpaste, along with the rounders and shelves of clothing items, the program has outgrown its first home. Next year’s location behind the main gymnasium has over double the space. Program coordinator, Gayle Carr is thrilled with the new location, especially since the program is now working with the Midwest Food Bank, allowing for even more food items to be distributed to students in need. The program began a little over a year ago when Mrs. Carr, Amber Hopwood and Colleen Hagenbruch were inspired by the work of Moms Who Care East Peoria to bring a similar program to Bartonville. The Board of Education added its support, and the program, like any good Rocket, soared, with huge donations received last summer. The African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” could be the motto for Moms Who Care. The community-wide outpouring has been an overwhelming show of support for the students of Limestone Community High School. Eldercare Class Visits Assisted Living Facility On March 23rd, Mrs. Carrie Webster’s Eldercare class took a field trip to Morningside of Washington. Morningside of Washington is an Assisted Living Center, which was previously The Grand Victorian of Washington. Several staff members gave the students on the trip a tour of the facility, which included residents' rooms, chapel, dining center, movie room and general areas. The students also heard from the Director of Morningside, the Resident Nurse, a Certified Nursing Assistant, and Food Production workers. The students then participated in recreation time. They helped lead exercise class with about 20 residents. The exercises were performed in chairs so that all residents could participate. After stretching, the students and residents played several games together. Students were able to see firsthand the information they have learned in class, specifically about geriatric workers and care facilities. Both the students and residents enjoyed working together and socializing. Volume 1, Issue 1 Term 4 News PAGE 11 Page 11 Mock Interviews With the collaboration of Principal Jill Warren, Guidance Counselor Jayshree McKechnie, and Co-Op Teacher Kitty Belsly, the Cooperative Education Program held their annual Mock Interviews on April 26, 2016 in the Library. The following community employers volunteered their valuable time: Philippi-Hagenbuch, Inc., Old Navy, OSF, Unity Pointe Methodist, Caterpillar, Mariott Hotel, Peoria Police Department, Midwest Technical Institute, Bruns Chiropractic, CEFCU, and Gordmans. Twelve Co-Op students participated in the networking event, and were interviewed by two different employers. Students reported that they found the experience to be extremely beneficial and learned interview strategies from their experience. Students appreciated the immediate feedback they received from their interviewers, and several students even received potential job leads for future employment. Employers expressed their interest in future mock interviews and were impressed that the LCHS students were well-prepared. 16th Annual Rocket Run—To Benefit LCHS AFJROTC and Cross Country 5k and 1 mile Saturday, August 27 @ 7:30 a.m. Packet pick-up 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, August 26 in the LCHS parking lot. LCHS students are passionate about supporting important individuals in their lives, and we were able to promote the message of HOPE and HELP to many through the week long activities. Rocket One student journalists – Alli Davis, Emily Fengel, Kaylin Lane, Isaac Simmons, and Brevyn Yeske – interviewed important “helpers” in the comLeft to Right: Mike Predmore, Kim Predmore, Holly Bill, Tegan Camden, Nancy munity: teacher, school counselor, parent, and counEgger, Kathy Harvey, Michelle Genovese selor. Each interview provided information on how they could help a person in need. They also created a video to honor LCHS community members who died of suicide. Student Council members created flyers, window art, and banners that shared with their peers the positive message of understanding. Looking Beyond Sadness was a special event that allowed community leaders to share the message of HOPE and HELP. Sixty-four individuals will be able to pass the same message on to friends and family. Kathy Harvey from the Hult Center for Healthy Living and Kim and Mike Predmore started the night with personal stories and preventative measures, including “Christopher’s Law” in honor of Christopher Predmore. There were four breakout sessions that focused on information related to depression and suicide led by Holly Bill and Kathy Harvy, Hult Center for Healthy Living; Tegan Camden, Children’s Home; Nancy Egger, Private Practice LCSW; and Michelle Genovese, LCHS School Nurse. Prom Crash Reenactment 2016 – Student/Parent Volunteers In collaboration with the Illinois Neurological Institute, Limestone Community High School student/parent volunteers performed “Operation Prom Night” for juniors, seniors, and any other student attending prom. Lisa Maynard, ThinkFirst Program Coordinator, united area agencies to recreate a car accident that drove the message of “ONE LIFE, ONE MIND, ONE BODY – ONE CHOICE CAN CHANGE ALL THAT.” The student/parent volunteers – Jenna Brown, Adriana Fitzgerald, TJ Geraci, Katherine Haage, Lisa Jones (parent), Breanna Pepper, Isaac Simmons, Tiera Starks, and James Welton – exposed the real-world consequences for the actions taken by one person. After the crash scene, Michelle Watson spoke about her journey that started the day her son died in a car accident that resulted from the driver being under the influence. On that bright, beautiful day our students felt her pain and her message not to allow their choices to emulate her ten-year journey; they were listening. This event occurs every two years. Athletics A Legend Comes Home Limestone graduate, Jim Thome, visited Limestone May 16 to autograph the mural painted on the varsity baseball press box. The mural was painted by Bryce Newton and Thome's niece, Morgan Ellis, as part of Mrs. Bentley's art class. Limestone varsity baseball coach, Derek Renz, and Thome's high school baseball coach and current Athletic Director of LCHS, Jim Corpus, enjoyed visiting with Thome. Great job, Morgan and Bryce Running to State! Matt Carr is at it for the second year in a row! He is once again State Bound for his amazing efforts in the 1600 m.
