Brazilian vanguard to Swedish primal blues - Artists from 30 countries
will perform at Germany‘s largest world music festival
Glen Hansard, Keren Ann, Hermeto Pascoal, Element of Crime, Sidestepper, Cäthe,
Lena Willemark, East Cameron Folkcore, Anoushka Shankar, Alejandra Ribera with around 300 concerts, workshops and talks at Rudolstadt Festival.
The special country in focus is Colombia.
Whether its Korean Post-Rock, new Wienerlied or Classical Arabic music, the Rudolstadt Festival from 7th-10th July
will again offer a highly disparate range of Roots, Folk and World music. To kick off proceedings, the cult songwriters
Element of Crime will open the Festival in the Thuringian town of Rudolstadt at melancholy pace. Three days later it
will close with the acclaimed Oscar winning Irish singer and songwriter, Glen Hansard .

New Cumbia sound, Street parties and Gaiteros
For the 26th festival the Country in Focus will revolve around the music scene in Colombia .
Ten bands will show the cultural contrasts and traditions from its indigenous heritage to its Caribbean, African and Spanish influences. Fitting nicely the dance of this year’s festival is the Cumbia . Its electronic version made its way around
the clubs of the world ignited by Sidestepper . Recently, the band has reinvented itself and their new musical direction
replaces electronic sound with a new simplicity and more acoustic instruments. — THE Dance act at this festival! For a
more traditional Cumbia with accordion, Carmelo Torres (who is amongst the best in his profession) comes to Rudolstadt. As a veteran amongst Gaiteros comes Sixto Silgado „Paíto“ , the Afro-Colombian Flutist from the north of the
country. One of the pioneers of the modern metropolitan style is Profetas . The duo created their own sound from mixing reggae, hip-hop, salsa and Cumbia. Rancho Apar te bring the lively music of a Pacific coast street chapel: parties
and traditions from the Chocó region. A virtuoso on the Colombian harp is Edmar Castañeda . Through his brilliant play
he has made quite a stir in the Jazz scene and opened up a whole new dimension to the instrument.
Not only do the musicians from Colombia reflect the diverse culture of the country, so do the artists with two exhibitions
being held as part of the Rudolstadt Festival. „Chief Querubín Queta and other faces of Colombia“ , portrays the
lives of indigenous clans as well as everyday life in the big cities. Another exhibition is dedicated to Colombian painting,
graphics and video art.
Jazz meets Folk
Among the other 100 bands and solo artists is also „one of the most important musicians on the planet“, that is what
Miles Davis said about the Brazilian Hermeto Pascoal . He will be 80 in June, but his sound is time- and ageless. He is
the lightning of avant-garde jazz, finely weaving Brazilian traditions like Forró or Bossa Nova. Among the best sitar musicians in the world is Anoushka Shankar . She resists all clichés around the instrument and takes gladly to collaborating
with rap musicians and techno producers. Outstanding musicians who are setting standards also come from Scandinavia:
Lena Willemark combines jazz singing and traditional folk music to become Sweden‘s number one folk voice. At the
festival she will perform a concert together with the Thüringer Symphoniker Saalfeld-Rudolstadt orchestra. In
Denmark violinist Harald Haugaard and singer Helene Blum have brought folk into the 21st century. They interpret it
sensitively, touchingly and with surprise.

After a five-year break Keren Ann is back on stage. The high-flyer of the Nouvelle Chanson movement brings a mix of
jazz, blues and folk. New popular German songs by the singer Cäthe have been critically praised as unconventional,
fresh and challenging. Not only in France is Alejandra Ribera acclaimed, the Parisian woman with Argentinean-Scottish
roots changes languages, tempos, moods and „sings as if she’s blowing smoke rings in the air“ (French journalist). In
the UK, Emily Por tman could win the BBC Award for „Folk Singer of the Year“ at the end of April for her gloomy stories about murder and magic. Quite different, but no less memorable are the stories of Ernst Molden and his partners

Of course, the line up is also enriched with various acts
that have clear political concerns. Akua Naru represents
the female voice in Conscious Rap. African rhythms, jazz,
blues, neo-soul and spoken word pull through the beats
of the Cologne based musician who comes from Connecticut. From Texas comes East Cameron Folkcore .
The eleven musicians sing against social injustice and
abuse of power and „with brain, heart and clenched
fist“ (Rolling Stone), their music is a thunderous mix
of folk, rock, anti-folk and Americana. The multimedia
performance ‘Soundscapes of Resistance’ from DJ Ipek
is inspired by the protest culture in Istanbul and Cairo.

From Turkish government critics to the refugee policy,
these topics are not far from our minds. To this end,
the festival brings in-house production NOAH‘S ARK
reloaded to the stage, a ludicrous summer’s tale with
lots of music and dance. The starting point is the idea
of Noah‘s Ark, which cruises through the Mediterranean,
taking refugees onboard. The musicians involved come
from Syria, Burkina Faso and Slovakia, the conductor is
Matthias Schriefl and its director Petra Paschinger .
The trumpeter has powerfully shaken the alpine brass scene in recent years and is honored for it with the RUTH World
Music Award. Other awards go to the folk and rock musician and songwriter Stoppok , the multiethnic Royal Street
Orchestra from Wuppertal and the bagpipe and hurdy gurdy courses of Andrea Hotzko and internationally renowned musicians who have taught generations of students their drones.
Exciting discoveries
From Gothenburg comes a band that for many visitors will be a surprising discovery: Wild Birds & Peacedrums search
for primal blues with reduced, haunting sounds and powerful drums, the spiritual in (pop) music. Impressive performances are also promised by artists from the Ukraine, Korea, Switzerland and the Congo: The Dakh Daughters are an
oblique, extraordinary women music troupe from Kiev and Jambinai move between meditative calm and wild sound
storms. Beyond K-pop clichés, the Korean band mixes rock and punk with traditional sounds. Hornroh , in turn, expand
our listening habits through the high art of the alphorn. The men and women of Ndima grant rare glimpses into a passing world, their program reflects the rich culture of the Aka-Pygmy.
