A glimps e of 100 models on dis play by European and US auto manufacturers

European and US auto manufacturers exhibited a total of just over 100 vehicle models at the 2008 Beijing
Motor Show (Auto China 2008) that was held from April 22 to 28, 2008. Of these, 37 models had either been
recently launched for sale or were about to be produced in China, 39 models were either already being
imported or were planned to be imported and sold, and the remaining 25 were concept cars that included
hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles, and fuel­cell vehicles. The following report gives an outline of the vehicle
models exhibited.
2008 Beijing Motor Show: Outline of vehicles exhibited and debuted by European and US auto
manufacturers
Outline
GM exhibited 32 models under four brands: Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Saab. In the fuel­
cell­vehicle sector, GM exhibited the Chevrolet Volt concept car and the Volt Ice Chassis, which

the company also exhibited at Auto Shanghai 2007. GM announced that China is among one of the
first markets outside the US where it will launch a fuel­cell vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt, which is
planned for launch in 2010 or later.
Ford, together at a booth jointly run with Changan Ford Mazda Automobile and Jiangling
Ford
Motors, exhibited 11 models sold under the Ford brand. The company announced that the name of
the new Fiesta, of which production is to begin in China in 2008, is Fute Jianianhua (Ford Fiesta).
Volvo
Volvo exhibited eight models at its own booth (next to Ford's). It announced that it would begin
producing the S80 in China, following the production launch of the S40.
Chrysler exhibited 10 models under three brands: Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep. In April 2008, it
Chrysler unified the sales networks of these three brands in China and also increased the number of dealers
to approximately 130.
Daimler exhibited 33 models under three brands: Mercedes Benz, Maybach, and smart. Exhibited
for the first time in the world were three models in the GLK series. In addition, the SL500 and the
Maybach Landaulet debuted for the first time in Asia. The CL600, S350 4Matic, and smart

debuted for the first time in China. Daimler's sales grew 53% in China in 2007.
The auto manufacturer exhibited five derivatives of the smart, a cut model of the fortwo tridion
safety cell. It announced that it would start marketing the fortwo in China in the middle of 2009.
The company has already opened a website in Chinese dedicated to the vehicle
(www.smart.com/china).
VW exhibited 31 models at a booth it shared with Shanghai VW and FAW­VW. Two of the
vehicles, from those exhibited, were mass­produced models developed by the two joint­venture
VW
partners and debuting for the first time in the world. Audi displayed 14 vehicle models at its own
booth while Skoda, also at its own booth, exhibited 12 vehicle models based on two production
series, the Octavia and the Fabia. Skoda said that it targets more than 3% share of the auto market
in China, aiming to sell 68,000 vehicles there in 2008.
PSA exhibited 20 vehicle models sold under both the Citroen and Peugeot brands, which were on
exhibit at a booth shared with Dongfeng­Puegeot­Citroen Automobile. PSA plans to launch more

than 20 models between 2008 and 2013. In 2008, it will launch five models including the 307
2box and the new Elysee. It plans to produce approximately 450,000 units in 2010. In 2009, its
second passenger car plant in Wuhan, which has an annual production capacity of 150,000 units,
will start operations.
BMW exhibited 12 vehicle models, including the Hydrogen 7, at a booth it shared with BMW
Brilliance Automotive. Currently, the company is rapidly expanding its sales network in China.
The number of dealers was increased to 90 in 2007. This number will further increase to 120 in
2008. BMW Brilliance Automotive's annual production capacity will be increased to 44,000 units

in 2008. It sold a total of 49,388 vehicles in 2007, including imported vehicles.
Mini exhibited five models including the Mini Cooper, which is priced at 348,000 RMB, at its
own booth located next to the BMW booth. For show, it also exhibited the Mini JCW Challenge
that is designed for racing at a maximum speed of 240km/h, debuting for the first time in Asia. In
2007, the auto manufacturer sold 2,200 vehicles in China, double the 2006 figure.
Fiat exhibited five models at its own booth. It announced that it would start importing and
selling the Grand Punto, Bravo, and Linea in 2008. Fiat withdrew from a joint­venture business

with Nanjing Automobile at the end of 2007 and is currently negotiating with Chery Automobile
to form a joint venture. As a note of interest, Nanjing Iveco displayed its products at SAIC Motor
Corp.'s commercial vehicle booth exhibiting the Power Daily A36 among others.
Renault exhibited six models including a F1 racing car; a concept car; and the new Laguna,

which debuted in Asia for the first time. The company announced that it would start importing and
selling the new Megane equipped with a 2.0L manual transmission as standard equipment, as early
as May 2008. The company has approximately 30 dealers in China.
Models produced in China by European and US auto manufacturers
Shanghai GM Dong Yue's new Aveo: This is the Company's latest model, which debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. It is manufactured at Shanghai GM Dong Yue and was launched in March 2008. It is priced between 69,900­97,900 RMB.

GM's Chevrolet Captiva: This vehicle, when it begins being produced at Shanghai GM Dong Yue, will be a 5 to 7 seat SUV that will launch in December 2008. Imports have already started to be sold in November 2007. The starting price is 224,800 RMB. GM plans to add a derivative model equipped with a V6 3.2L engine as standard. It is priced between 310,000 and 330,000 RMB.
Changan Ford Mazda Automobile's new Mondeo Zhisheng: This vehicle is the third­generation Mondeo and was launched in November 2007. It is priced between 181,800­239,800 RMB.
Changan Ford Mazda Automobile's S­MAX 5: This particular model comes standard as a 5 seater. The company has yet to adopt a Chinese name for the vehicle, which is scheduled to be released in June 2008. It will be priced at 194,800 RMB. (The price of the existing 7­seat model is between 192,800 and 226,800 RMB).

Ford's new Fiesta (the Fute Jianianhua: Fiesta 2 box): This vehicle model is being produced at Changan Ford Mazda Automobile's Nanjing plant. It is scheduled to be launched in December 2008 and will be priced between 8,000 and 120,000 RMB.
Beijing DaimlerChrysler Benz's Borui: This vehicle model, which is a sedan based on the Chrysler Sebring, was released in March 2008. It is priced between 182,000 and 227,000 RMB.

5th generation Zhongyu Automobile Weiting (Vito): This model is a specialty vehicle based on the Mercedes Benz Vito. It is equipped with a panoramic sunroof as standard equipment. It was launched in July 2008 and has a starting price of 600,000 RMB.
Shanghai VW's Lavida: This vehicle first debuted at the Beijing Show. The exterior of this model is very similar to that of the Phaeton. It is the first mass­produced model that Shanghai VW developed itself, based on the Neeza concept. The company stated that this model is designed to compete against the Corolla, Peugeot 307, and Focus.
It is scheduled to be released in June 2008 and will be priced between 120,000­150,000 RMB.

It is the first mass­produced A­class sedan that FAW­VW developed on its own. The vehicle's target market is middle­class customers. Production is scheduled
to begin at the Changchun plant in July 2008. The vehicle will be priced between 100,000­150,000 RMB. It is 100mm longer in overall length than the current model.
Skoda's Fabia GE: This model, an A0 class hatchback that made its first debut in China, is a vehicle designed to be marketed on a global basis. It was first launched in Europe in March 2007. Production in China is scheduled to begin at Shanghai VW in September 2008. It is scheduled to be released in November 2008 and will be priced between 80,000­120,000 RMB.
Citroen's Grand C4 Picasso: This model comes standard as a 7 seater. It will begin being mass­produced in 2008 in China and will be priced at 400,000 RMB. It was exhibited for show only.

BMW's new X6 xDrive 50i: Import and sales of this vehicle, which is a sports activity coupe that debuted in China for the first time, will begin in August 2008. Pre­launch sales by reservation began in April 2008. It is priced at 1.5 million RMB and comes with a 6­speed, automatic transmission, V8 4.4L twin­turbo engine with a maximum output of 300kW.
The new Fiat 500: This vehicle will be launched at the beginning of 2009. It comes equipped with a 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4L engine. Its length, width, height, and wheelbase are 3550mm, 1630mm, 1490mm, and 2300mm, respectively.

GM Buick's Invicta concept car: This vehicle made its world debut at the Beijing Show. It is the first vehicle model sold under the Buick name, which uses a direct­injection turbo engine (2.0L with a maximum output of 186kW). Its length, width, height, and wheelbase are 4932mm, 1874mm, 1466mm, and 2908mm, respectively.
Jeep Renegade concept car: This model, which comes standard as a two­seater, is a sports HEV concept car that first debuted at the 2008 North American International Auto Show. Its first debut in Asia was at the Beijing Show. It is powered by a BlueTec diesel­powered engine and a lithium­ion battery, getting 2.1L/100km in fuel efficiency.

Mercedes Benz' ML 450 Blue Hybrid Frame concept car: This is a HEV concept car that is planned to be released in the US in 2009. It uses a two­mode hybrid system. The fuel efficiency is 7.7L/100km., an improvement of 25% over the base model, the ML 450. It was exhibited for show only.
Audi's Q5: This is a midsize SUV that made its world debut at the Beijing Show. It comes with three different engines: a 2.0TFSI turbo gasoline engine, a 2.0TDI common­rail diesel engine, and a 3.0TDI V6 diesel engine; and with either a 6­speed manual transmission or a 7­speed DCT. Its length, width, height, and wheelbase are 4630mm, 1880mm, 1650mm, and 2810mm, respectively.
Fiat's Panda Aria concept car: This bi­fuel concept car, which made its world debut at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, is powered by gasoline and a blend of methane and hydrogen. It uses a 2­cylinder 0.9L turbo compact engine and emits 69g/km of CO2 emissions.
