accept the mission. Finally our new team is rounded out with the return of one of the festival
founders Anne Walton, who while still based in Canada, has come back as a film scout and
program advisor.
The Directors are both proud and relieved to be presenting the 14th annual Flagstaff Mountain
Film Festival! The past 12 months have been touch and go for us since our long time,
overworked Executive Director, Ron Tuckman, decided it was time get his life back. He is now
off to great things, getting married being at the top of the list! Ron and I took over the festival
together back in 2007, and he is sorely missed. For the eight years that Ron and I worked
together, at the close of each festival I would tell our audience in the Orpheum that the reason
we still have a Mountain Film Festival in Flagstaff is because of Ron. This is a fact that will
remain true as long as this festival exists and in honor of his years of bringing our town the
magic of documentary film, we as a board have inaugurated an award in his name. This year
the first ‘Tuckman Award’ will represent the ‘best young voice award’; an audience choice
for best documentary but from the perspective of our youth. It is a tribute to the future of
documentary film and a reminder that the show must go on.
When Anne and Geoff Cross started the festival in 2003 it was a winter event. Circumstance
has brought it back to the winter. Teams and events cycle and change, but what has
remained the same is that we once again have assembled an incredible line-up of
documentary film and special events for Flagstaff and our visitors. This year we are
presenting a record number of 105 films from around the globe. The Orpheum remains our
primary venue, and the place to be from the opening with our popular Student Program; to
our “Celebration of The Grand” tribute to the Grand Canyon and the 100th anniversary of The
National Park Service; right through to our closing Valentines celebration with “The Yard Dogs
Road Show, The Movie” and Wrap Party Hot Club. Flagstaff Bike Revolution is again our center
for two nights of jaw-dropping adventure. We have free screenings and special events all
around downtown that will inspire and enlighten, so please take a good look at this program
and our website at flagstaffmountainfilms.org.
The show is going on with a tremendous effort from a mostly all new board. The amazing Amy
Smith, whose role was previously focused on putting on the Student and Family Programs,
has graciously ramped up her commitment and will be joining me as an executive director.
Maria Campbell our land-locked marine biologist has a keen eye for film and has shown us
that potential sponsors have a tough time resisting her Irish lilt. River and yoga guide Laura
Fallon has done an amazing job taking over our Flag Bike Revolution Outdoor and Adventure
film program. Lisa Lamberson, who has been supporting conservation efforts in our town and
region for years, has taken over The Environmental Film program. Realizing that it would take
more than a working board to cover Ron’s workload we developed a Festival Coordinator
position and we are thanking our lucky stars that the incredible Montana Johnson decided to
It takes an incredible effort and a great deal of resources to put on this festival. We could
not do it without our sponsors, especially our title sponsor Arizona Raft Adventures. We would
also like to thank the many contributing artists whose inspiring work fills our canvas. Finally
thank you our audience, we wish you all the joy and inspiration this festival brings to us.

2016 STUDENT PROGRAM & FAMILY SESSION
The Student Program remains one of
the Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival’s
core endeavors, fulfilling our educational
mission of connecting local students to
films that entertain, educate, and inspire
while highlighting important social, cultural,
political, and environmental issues.
This year we are excited to have two
special student programs open to
the public. FMFF will be donating 15%
of ticket sales from these sessions
to Flagstaff High School’s Digital
Photography Program. On February 12th,
enjoy great films while supporting local
students. The feature film in the morning
session is I Am Eleven by Genevieve
Bailey. The youth in this film share their
thoughts on a range of subjects such
as love, war, global warming, music,
terrorism, culture, family, happiness,
religion and the future. The feature film
in the afternoon session is Shake the
Dust by Nas & Adam Sjoberg. The film
chronicles the influence of breakdancing,
exploring how it strikes a resonant chord
in the slums, favelas and ghettos of the
world and far beyond.
FMFF is once again offering the Traveling
Student Program to address the needs of
our local schools. Sinagua Middle School
will host films on-campus, therefore
providing a unique educational and
cinematic experience to their students.
We are excited that local filmmaker
Justin Clifton will be there to share his
enthusiasm for film to nearly 800 youth.

The Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival is
enthusiastic about its Family Session
which offers a film experience for the
whole family. For even the youngest film
enthusiasts, more than a dozen short
films are programmed – have you ever
received the perfect gift, ventured into
a cave, lived with elephants, or have you
ever had a best friend?! Selected films are
fun, uplifting, educational, and are bound
to be enjoyed by all. The festival’s Family
Session will be Saturday morning at the
Orpheum. This cinematic experience will
also incorporate a live performance from
father and son, Craig and Jasper Childs.
We truly thank parents for enjoying this
event with their kids; minors need to be
accompanied by an adult and children
under 5 are FREE. SEE PAGE 7 FOR A
