Spring weather is almost
here! Are you as excited
as I am to get back outside on a regular basis?
I know a lot of you live
in the Midwest because
there are four distinct
seasons. However, I am
not a fan of the springs
I saw growing up in the
Chicago suburbs; they
were usually rainy, chilly,
and muddy. Yet hanging
out at playgrounds is
in my near future, and
my active little boy will
certainly be thankful.
This season I have two
to tote around, and I am
glad the baby will be too
little to want to play in
the mud. I shudder to
think about the condition of my car with two
muddy kids kicking the backs of my seats. <sigh> I will have a clean car
again someday, right? Those of you with older kids, please reassure me!
Or maybe by the time I can have a clean car, I won’t care anymore!

What do you think of when you look forward to spring? In my family
it meant that we were getting ready to go back to the cabin. My parents’
cabin in Wisconsin is three season (meaning no heat), so April or May
was the time to start going up there again. The cabin meant – means –
everything: freedom, less rules, being outdoors, staying up late, playing
cards, wearing grubby clothes, and happy relaxed parents. Up there the
rain and mud didn’t matter, you just got dirty and kept on going. For
most of my life there was no shower or hot water, so clean up didn’t
happen until you got home. Talk about a dirty car!

Junior Women’s Club of Mequon-Thiensville
A SHINING EXAMPLE of community service in our area is the
tanks feature a variety of aquatic and amphibious creatures including tree frogs, turtles and a rare albino garter snake.
Junior Women’s Club of Mequon-Thiensville. The club has been
around for several generations but established itself independently
from the national federation in the early 2000’s. The club has a long
history of community involvement and service throughout Ozaukee
County. Some of the most long lasting and/or visible contributions
have been:
The Turkey Trot is the Junior Women’s Club’s biggest fundraiser and
has also become a time honored community tradition. With over
1,100 participants, the 2012 Turkey Trot was the 8th annual and
most successful in its history. While far from a sophisticated race,
due to its ever increasing popularity, the club made the move to
chip timing several years ago. Every year they look to improve the
event a little at a time, and this past year the kid’s area was expanded.
In addition to the Gobble Gallop, there was an inflatable obstacle
course and toy collection through the Village of Thiensville’s Toys
for Tots campaign. The members so pleased to be able to bring this
much anticipated event to the community, and are thankful to the
loyal runners, walkers, sponsors and the tireless assistance from John
Treffert and the entire Village of Thiensville team. Thank you to all
the husbands as well: usually if they are not at the event, they are at
home basting the other turkey.
t In 1978, Concerned Ozaukee Parent’s Exchange (COPE) was
initiated by the club with a vision to provide support for parents.
Initially, calls were taken at the homes of volunteers. Now 35 years
later, COPE Services, Inc. uses 50 volunteers to answer more than
22,000 calls per year from the Greater Milwaukee Area. Today
COPE is a United Way Agency and the Ozaukee County Hotline.
www.copeservices.org
t Also during the 1970’s the club donated the signboard located at
the northeast corner of Mequon and Cedarburg Roads. For more
than three decades the board has provided a voice to countless local
organizations that would otherwise not be able to easily advertise
community events and information. The club is so excited to work
with the City of Mequon to replace the signboard during 2013.
They are working with the city to come up with a modern and
timeless design which will serve the area for years to come.
The Junior Woman’s Club of Mequon-Thiensville is a combination
of working and stay-at-home women with a sharp bent for fun times
paired with a bit of community service. One of the posters once
said, “We are a small group of busy ladies looking for more busy
ladies who love Ozaukee County, too. Some with kids & some
without…..Some who are LOUD and some who are quiet…” This
still so simply sums up the group.
t In 2010 the club was able to donate funds to the Mequon Nature
Preserve (MNP) for eco-friendly furniture within an otherwise
vacant room. Now one of the most popular rooms for events at the
MNP, the room also showcases “critter tanks.” These glass viewing

has been the members I have met over the years. Three former
members, Shannon Stoker, Tricia Lewinsky, and Kathryn Houpt
particularly inspired me in my early years. Not only sweet, darling
and funny, these women are also practical minded, hard-working
and community driven. Each inspired me in their own way, and I
hope the essence of their graceful diplomacy and commitment to
the community has remained.”
Melissa Woehl joined the same year as Jennifer. When not
There will be a Get-To-Know-Us event at Glaze in downtown
Thiensville on Wednesday, April 24 at 7pm, and the May meeting
will be at the Mequon Nature Preserve. Thanks to the group’s donation a few years ago, there are chairs to sit on during the meeting!
Colleen Krueger, another transplant from Chicago, moved to
the area after her now husband sold her on the beauty of life in the
Wisconsin. It didn’t take long for her to fall in love with Wisconsin,
but as president of the club, she makes him dress up in a turkey
costume every Thanksgiving morning to remind him that he took
her away from life in the big city.
traveling for business, Melissa is often found with her husband
Scott biking on the beautiful country roads throughout Ozaukee
County. Although Melissa and Scott actually live in Brown Deer,
Melissa was attracted to the club for its commitment to community service. Melissa is known as the “Money Lady” or more
formally the treasurer.
Jennifer Mackinnon moved with her husband and two kids
from Chicago in 2010. As a way to meet new friends and get involved in the community, Jennifer came to a Get-To-Know-Us coffee hour and joined up. Now a mother of three, Jen holds a board
position and usually instigates our nights out on the town.

Mequon Beacon
One Dream Home , Coming Right Up!
By Barb McCormick, Mequon resident
In May 1989, I went to the Peoria, IL
Animal Shelter in search of a kitten to
be company for my older cat. A litter
of three adorable kittens found in a
hollow tree had just been brought in –
about 8 weeks old, two female and one
very feisty little boy. He was so tiny
that we named him Teenie Weenie. To our surprise he grew to be
almost 20 pounds, as he was part Maine Coon. He quickly became very
attached to my then high-school age son; Stevie was his ticket to the
freedom of being outdoors. They had so many adventures. Stevie would
put him over his shoulder and carry him to large areas where he could
safely roam and hunt for mice.
As the kids left for college and my husband traveled extensively,
Teenie became mostly my cat, and I adored him. Unfortunately the
outdoors always held such a draw for him causing me many sleepless
nights from worry. He used at least 6 of his 9 lives! He was accidentally locked in a neighbor’s garage for three days during a blizzard, in
numerous cat fights since he wouldn’t allow another cat on his property,
and, my greatest fear, was hit by a car as he crossed the street on his way
home. With a broken hip and my emergency vet wanting to euthanize
him, I rushed him to the University of IL Vet School – a 1 ½ hour drive
– in which I learned he was soothed by the sounds of “Puff the Magic
Dragon”!
Months later, fully recovered, he endured a car drive to our new
home in Jacksonville, FL, sitting on my lap for 17 hours looking out
the window. He loved the warm, sunny days and chasing the lizards but
sat on my lap again when we returned to Illinois three years later. By
this time he was 13 years old and had been diagnosed with early stage
kidney failure. He allowed me to introduce two rescue kittens to our
family which finally, in his old age, he had mellowed enough to accept.
Now in Mequon, on a very sad fall day in November 2008, at the
age of 19½, I realized that Teenie was so tired, so weak, and unable to
eat his favorite foods. On a bright sunny day I carried him outside and
watched him smell the cold air, then lay down on a pile of fallen leaves.
I cried as the leaves blew on top of him and he didn’t have the energy to
shake them off. I held him on the drive to my vet, telling him over and
over what a good, loyal, loving boy he was to me for almost 20 years.
That final injection is so quick but I had time to put my head on his,
whispering over and over to him that he was the best cat ever. I know
many people say that but he really was the best cat there ever was.

The Logemann Community
Center is for Everyone!
TIMELESS DESIGN
THE FAMILY PLAYCENTER at Logemann Community Center was
created a dozen years ago to serve as a gathering place for “stay at home”
moms and their young children. It offers an educationally enriching
play environment to strengthen children’s social skills while providing a
supportive atmosphere for the adults. Throughout the years, in addition
to moms, several nannies began walking through its doors and even on
occasion, a few dads who challenged the norm and embraced the opportunity to be their family’s primary caregiver. This year, however, a new
group of adults have discovered the Playcenter – GRANDPARENTS.
In today’s economy, many families have been forced to become
two income households. To help alleviate the expense of daycare,
grandparents are stepping in to care for their grandkids – and joyfully!
The playful atmosphere of Logemann’s Family Playcenter just adds
to the experience. On any given day, you’ll see a grandpa on the floor
playing trains or a grandma “having tea” with a little girl glitzed out in
dress-up clothes. If they do migrate to one of the comfy couches, it’s
not to bury their heads in a magazine, but to relax and gaze adoringly at
their young charges at play. How lucky for these children to have such
a strong connection to their grandparents. For one reason or another,
many children never get the opportunity to develop that bond with
older adults.
If you’re a grandparent fortunate enough to have grandchildren
in the area, plan lots of outings to the Playcenter where imaginations
run wild and hearts overflow. And don’t forget your camera! If your
grandchildren are miles away and you ache for that chance to marvel at
a young child’s characteristic “cuteness”, Logemann Center welcomes
you to become a volunteer grandparent. It’s a win-win for young and
old – and everyone leaves with a smile!

What Autism Looks Like for Us
A Reason for Hop e
By Amanda Hammond, Mequon resident
April is National Autism
Awareness Month. Autism
now affects 1 in 88 children
and 1 in 54 boys.
WE ALWAYS KNEW something was different about our little
boy, but we didn’t know our son had autism until October, 2012.
He was not even three yet and wasn’t showing what I thought to be
the stereotypical signs of autism. Our child was alert and loved to
cuddle. He smiled. He was boisterous. He was NOT autistic. That’s
what I told myself whenever the worry set in about his speech delay
and baffling tantrums.
His repetitive behavior, limited play skills, speech delay and lack
of joint attention skills (connecting socially) all pointed to autism,
as well as his toe-walking and hand flapping. To meet the diagnosis
requirements for an ASD, there needs to be a deficit in three key developmental areas: communication, social interaction, and repetitive
behaviors. Our kiddo exhibited enough challenges in these areas to be
labeled with mild to moderate autism. I learned that many children
on the spectrum do, in fact, love to cuddle and smile when they are
happy. Unfortunately, being cuddly was not a free pass from landing
on the autism spectrum.
I chose to approach our new found information positively. Now I
could follow a protocol, so that was actually pretty wonderful in a way.
I went to ‘Google Land’ every night after our little prince went to bed
and began to educate myself on the HOPE that can be found in ASDs.
A lot of information surfaced about biomedical treatment, meaning
approaching ASDs largely from a nutritional perspective. We removed
gluten and dairy from his diet and saw results in his speech in a couple
weeks! I am reading the book “Healing and Preventing Autism,” by Dr.
Jerry Kartzinel and Jenny McCarthy. We decided to seek Dr. Jerry’s help
with our son’s biomedical treatment. We also do a lot of supplements
like injections of vitamin B-12 and DMG (dimethyglycine) which help
the body methylate, or detoxify, properly. Within about a week, our son
was talking even more. These are some of the things that have helped
him to begin using his words to change his world. It’s been amazing.
Our boy attends Mequon Jewish Preschool two mornings a week
and loves his friends and teachers. They see his strengths rather than his
weaknesses. We are now also doing Applied Behavior Analysis therapy
in our home, and we’ve seen improvements in his ability to follow
short commands and request things he wants effectively. In four short
months, our son has made HUGE progress! This diagnosis won’t hold
our little miracle man back in life as long as we keep working hard and
respecting the amazing creature that he is. So far he has been my greatest teacher.
Please continue to read about our adventures on my blog. www.

The 200 year-old Jonathan Clark House is well on its way to being
restored to its original 1848 appearance with the appointment of Mequon
resident Nina Jo Look, Ph.D., to the position of Museum Director. Dr.
Look has career experience in educational administration as well as extensive historical experience.
Jonathan Clark was an early Mequon settler instrumental in the development of the first public school in Mequon. The home Clark built on
the northwest corner of Cedarburg and Bonniwell Roads is considered a
significant part of the community’s history, and is on the National Register
of Historic Places.
Dr. Look is a highly visible and energetic member of the community
who has hit the ground running in her new job. She has developed an
exhaustive plan including, among other objectives, a goal to fill the Clark
House with 1848 period furniture, floor coverings, lighting, wall pieces
and accessories, plus the development of exhibits, displays and tours of the
house. A museum store is also being considered. “I am looking forward to
the challenge ahead,” Look said following her acceptance of the post, adding “I am fortunate that there is an enthusiastic group of volunteers who
will be working with me.”
Look was raised in rural northwest Mequon and for eight years attended
Bonniwell School, a one-room school in the school district founded by
Jonathan Clark. She graduated from Homestead High School and continued her education in the University of Wisconsin system, ultimately
achieving a doctorate degree in Educational Administration. Dr. Look held
administrative positions with Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC)
during a 20-year career, most recently as Vice President responsible for the
Mequon campus, retiring in 2006.
Look was instrumental in promoting the recent purchase of the Clark
House by The Friends of Jonathan Clark House, LTD. The organization is
purchasing the home from Jerry McGinnis, the founder of Embassy Homes
in Mequon, who purchased the home in 2012 from Dr. Gregory Custer.
The Friends have partnered with the Mequon Community Foundation in
an ambitious fund raising program projected to raise $500,000 to pay for
the home and jumpstart operations at the Clark House.
The idea of obtaining the home for public use came from Mequon
Mayor Curt Gielow. Donations of all amounts are being sought and may
be sent to the Mequon Community Foundation, P.O. Box 52, Mequon,
WI 53092. For more information contact Nina Jo Look, 262-242-4017,
or Cindy Bock, Chair, Friends of Jonathan Clark House, LTD., 262-2425262, [email protected].

It’s almost impossible to block all illicit information – the Internet
industry is savvy enough to disguise harmful media.
Parental controls aren’t easy to turn on/off and certain sites
are blocked that are legitimate for assigned homework.
For shared computers, it is easy to switch between desktops with
a simple password. But in certain situations your child might be
bothered if Wikipedia is accidentally blocked for his homework
assignment to be completed. Because reference websites represent a
full spectrum of terms, it’s commonly blocked as ‘suspicious.’ Luckily,
you can quickly grant access remotely with several of the parental
control programs.

Unsuspecting parents abide by a ‘hands-off’ perspective. It blindly
puts the child at risk for predators, porn addiction and the possibility
that your child could engage in bullying behaviors without your
knowledge. Although we can acknowledge exploration is important,
kids don’t have the experience to comprehend the information
they see. Isn’t your child’s safety worth $25-50 for parental control
software? Although
there is no 100%

implementing

There are two types of teasel, Common teasel (Dipsacus sylvstris) which
invades wetlands, aquatic habitats, and grasslands, and Cut-leaved teasel
(Dipsacus laciniatus) which invades grasslands. Invasive Plants are nonindigenous species or strains that become established in natural plant communities and wild areas, replacing native vegetation. While not yet officially
“Invasive” in Ozaukee County, both species are found in Mequon. Since
they are at invasive levels in Milwaukee County, it is just a matter of time
for our area unless something is done.
One of the worst apparent areas in Mequon is along Highland Road
just west of Port Washington Road. There is a large field on the south side
of the street across from Oriole
Lane School. When the grass was
no londer mowed along Highland
Road, this grassy field became
covered with teasel in just two years.
Another area where the teasel is a
major problem is on Friestadt Road
just west of Villa Grove Road.
Teasel spreads quickly by getting
into the drainage ditches alongside
the road. The plants are biennials:
the first year they produce a basal
rosette of prickly leaves followed the
next year by the flowering stalk. The
large basal rosettes quickly squeeze
out any plants growing near them
forming a tight mat that doesn't
allow anything else to grow. Budgets
do not allow for the city to control this plant. If people were aware of the
destructive nature of this plant, we could all work to remove it from the
drainage ditches in front of our homes and from our properties.
There is a lot of information on the Invasive Plants Association of
Wisconsin website at ipaw.org. Another website with great pictures and
information is:
http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/invasives/fact/commonteasel.html. A video
on identifying Common Teasel is online at http://www.youtube.com/
