Prince Owly and Renton find a home together and become fast friends! Tree House placed
more than 1,600 cats last year. Read about a few of our happy endings.
ON THE COVER: Dandy was rescued by our
Community Cats Team, and, while she was a
bit nervous, she was also incredibly friendly.
Dandy was malnourished and tested positive
for FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus), and
a Tree House staffer fostered her until there
was space in our FIV colony room. It was not
long before this sweet beauty was adopted
with her new friend and colony-mate, a cat
named Pepito. Both cats are doing wonderfully
in their new forever home.

Saving the tiniest stray cats. Learn more about our Kitten on Deck Program along with
other Tree House programs which helped thousands of cats and the people who care
for them
LETTER
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Friends of Tree House,
As we reflect on this past year, we are overwhelmed by the continued commitment of individuals such as you who support our lifesaving work.
We could not offer so many life-changing programs and services without your generous support, and we thank you for making Tree House’s
mission a reality.
2015 was another amazing year for Tree House and the many cats whose lives were saved. We continued to make progress toward our goal
of creating a no-kill Chicago as well as progress in the construction of our new, state-of-the-art facility. In the following pages, you’ll find
inspiring stories of survival, hope, and happy endings as well as highlights of our success along with sincere thanks to everyone who is a
part of that success.
In 2015, we again surpassed our annual adoption record by placing more than 1,500 cats in loving homes, many with special medical needs,
from our two Adoption Centers and our off-site pet store partners as well as through our programs. In addition, we relocated 149 feral cats
to new colonies, thanks in large part to the success of our Cats at Work Program.
Our BDVM Mac Lean Spay/Neuter Clinic performed nearly 4,000 free or low-cost spay/neuter surgeries in 2015, thus preventing the births
of countless more homeless cats and dogs, bringing our grand total to nearly 40,000 spays and neuters since our founding. Our weekly
Wellness Days also continued in 2015, serving the pets of low-income clients, local rescue groups, and foster parents from our Community
Cats Program. These outstanding results motivate us all to continue our lifesaving efforts and increase our impact; yet, we realize that we
could not achieve these milestones without the support of generous people like you.
Our Capital Campaign continues for the creation of our new Adoption Center and Veterinary Clinic at 7225 N. Western Avenue. With each step we
take in the process, we’re realizing the positive effect our new facility will have on the community. While the Cat Café seems to have garnered
the most attention from the media and general public, there are so many other benefits the new facility will provide, such as comfortable and
enriching shelter housing, enhanced medical and diagnostic equipment, an Education Center, a public Veterinary Clinic, and a beautiful public
space to attract more visitors to Tree House – ultimately helping to increase our adoptions and rescue even more cats.
Thanks in part to a rather mild Chicago winter, construction has been moving along quickly on our new building. The steel beams for the
frame were erected late in 2015, and the concrete has been poured for all of the floors. The utilities and ductwork are being installed as are
the framed partitions for the first and second floor exterior walls. It won’t be long before the building will be fully enclosed. We are currently
finalizing the interior design, furnishings, and finishes for all areas – creating a truly unique and cat-friendly space.
Now more than ever, we need your support to help us fund the final phases of the project and help our cats move into their dream home.
If you have not yet made your gift in support of our new facility, we are asking all of our supporters to give what they can. Plus, check out
our Real Tree House Cats of Chicago campaign including webisodes featuring some of our resident cats, and I encourage you to share this
Campaign with your friends, family, and colleagues. Please visit our Campaign website at: RealTreeHouseCats.org and #WatchCatsHappen
and #TreeHouseCats and help us achieve our goal! Please contact me if you have any questions about the new building.
Thank you again for your continued support of Tree House. I want to acknowledge the valuable contributions of our dedicated volunteers who
provide Tree House with an array of skills, expertise, and hands-on help at both of our locations. And as always, I want to thank our donors
on behalf of the staff, volunteers, and the Board of Directors of Tree House. We hope you take pride in knowing that you play a crucial role in
helping us save cats’ lives.
Sincerely,
David de Funiak

RECORD-BREAKING ADOPTIONS IN 2015!
TRAUMATIC INJURIES TO TRIUMPHANT RECOVERIES
TO A HOME TOGETHER - RENTON AND OWLY
Some of you may recall Renton, who was one of our special-needs
sponsor cats, and Prince Owly, one of last year’s Medical Miracle
cats. They are two of the most loving cats we’ve saved, both of
whom suffered traumatic and life-threatening injuries. Thankfully,
they each were found by Good Samaritans who brought them to Tree
House for care. Their respective journeys are triumphs of survival
and heartwarming reminders of the value of every life we save as
well as the joy of finding new friends.
Renton came to Tree House in the Spring of 2013, badly injured with
exposed muscle and large puncture wounds on his face which were
consistent with dog bites. He also had a cloudy eye, torn lip, and fractured
teeth. In addition to these severe injuries, this poor guy suffered from
cysts, roundworms, fleas, and ear mites. During his treatment, we
also discovered that Renton was FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus)
positive. Thankfully after months of intensive care, his wounds healed,
but his injuries left him with permanent facial paralysis.
Renton was placed in Tree House’s FIV colony to wait for his forever
home. While the paralysis in his face left him incapable of expressing
the range of emotion he would like to share, it was evident that Renton
beamed with love and devotion for his human caregivers. His gentle
nature began to shine through as did his adventurous side. He adored
playing quiet, interactive games, such as stealthily hiding under linens,
and he loved a good nap in cuddly blankets.
It was in 2015 that Prince Owly arrived at Tree House in critical
condition. He had been found in horrible shape; he was filthy and
covered in his own feces which had caused lesions on his hind legs.
He had mouth ulcers, most likely from a severe upper respiratory
infection (URI) that went untreated, and was suffering from severe
intestinal issues. But most concerning was the condition of his colon
and anal area. Prince’s rectum was ulcerated, seriously torn, and
bleeding, and the bottom section was missing. It is unclear exactly
what caused his injury, but it was evident that his condition was
life-threatening.
6
He was also malnourished and struggled with nausea, loss of appetite,
dehydration, diarrhea, and blood and discharge from his nose. Owly
remained in critical condition for weeks, and we did not know if he
would survive. After four long months, it was a triumphant day when
we realized that little Owly had regrown his rectal tissue. He made a
remarkable recovery and began to roam the first floor of our Headquarters
with infectious joy and an incredibly sweet nature. The mystery of this
gentle cat’s situation continued as we further discovered that he is
likely a Turkish Van, a somewhat rare breed of cat.
Having lived through unthinkable circumstances, both boys were now
waiting for the loving home they so deserved. Last year, Leigh and
Nora Baumgart came to visit and, to our excitement, decided to give
the boys a home together. While both cats had survived critical injuries
and resided together at Tree House, they had never met (Owly was on
the first floor of our Headquarters while Renton was on the third floor
in our FIV colony). It was in finding their forever home that they were
brought together and, to our joy, became fast friends. Leigh and Nora
commented, “The cats are doing so great and getting along really well!
Renton is a great big brother to Owly. He tries to teach him manners,
and Owly has taught Renton how to play hide and seek as they chase
each other through the house (daily). Recently, I caught Owly cleaning
the top of Renton’s head for the first time! We really love them and
are so happy to have Renton and Owly in our lives!” Saving cats with
life-threatening injuries is truly gratifying, and helping them find a
forever home is an even greater reward.
COMING FULL CIRCLE - DRAGONHEART’S JOURNEY BACK HOME
Dragonheart was first admitted in early 2014 as a friendly stray.
We provided much-needed attention to Dragonheart’s matted coat
and broken teeth, but we also discovered an old leg injury which
had caused him to develop arthritis. It soon became clear to us that
Dragonheart would need a guardian who would provide him with
the ongoing treatment and TLC he needed and deserved.
Dra gonheart joined one of our colon y rooms a t Tree House
Headquarters, but the presence of so many unfamiliar cats and
humans led to a very stressed out and easily overstimulated boy.
We moved him from room to room in search of the right fit, but he
remained distressed. We then transferred him to our Bucktown Branch,
where there is less commotion and fewer cats, in hopes of alleviating
his stress level. Over time, he settled a bit but continued to long for
solitude. It was difficult to find an adopter who was willing or able to
devote the necessary time and effort to his treatment and socialization.
This past year, Sue Braun came for a visit. Sue thoughtfully took
time to meet every one of Tree House’s resident cats, but Pete
captured her attention. She was “charmed by his gentle and
somehow seemingly forgiving soul.”
The end of 2015 brought a surprise visitor for Dragonheart - his
former foster mom, Terri Van Valkinburgh. She had learned that the
cat she had known as a loving lap sitter when she had fostered him
was having a hard time. It did not take long for Terri to decide that
she wanted to take Dragonheart home again...this time for good!
It has been heartwarming to learn how well Pete is doing in his
new home, and Sue’s love is evident, “Pete is wonderful!” A friend
of Sue’s has a six-year-old child who calls him “King Pete” and
makes crowns and capes for him which he doesn’t mind wearing.
“He is a love, and even my guests who visit rave about him. I am
so lucky to have him! I hope [his story] encourages other people to
adopt an older cat. They have so much love and pleasure to give.”
We wish Sue and King Pete many happy years together.
Things have a mysterious way of working out sometimes, and
Dragonheart has returned to a caregiver who understands and loves
him. He even has a kitty housemate whom he has been warming
up to. “He’s wonderful, so sweet and rambunctious.”
We couldn’t be happier to see a cat with so much potential find a
home with someone who knows and loves him just the way he is,
and we wish them all much joy.
PETE
A THREE-PEAT - PETE’S THIRD ADOPTION IS FINALLY A CHARM
Pete first came to Tree House in 2009 after he was abandoned
on the doorstep of a Tree House friend and supporter. This
caring woman was immediately taken by his sweet and docile
demeanor and his love of human affection. Understandably,
Pete had a hard time adjusting to shelter life at Tree House
and struggled with a loss of appetite throughout his stay. Upon
examination, we diagnosed Pete with a heart murmur as well as
IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). He also battled with bouts of
diarrhea. Fortunately, with a special diet regimen, Pete’s health
began to improve, yet still it was clear he would do much better
in a stable home environment.
A true love, Pete was a popular participant in our Animal-Assisted
Therapy Program, bringing the joy of his sweet face to all who met
him. We were thrilled when Pete was adopted in 2010; however,
he was returned about a year later after being diagnosed with
diabetes which became too much of a financial burden for his
guardian. Additionally, Pete had developed skin allergies and
battled intermittent skin lesions on his face and body which we
were able to help alleviate with attention and care. We were so
happy when he was adopted a second time in 2012 only to be
disappointed when he was returned again a year later through
no fault of his own.
Pete’s health struggles continued, but we didn’t give up, and he
began to improve. His diabetes even went into remission, yet his
age and ongoing issues caused him to be overlooked for several
years. We knew he just needed a loving home to truly thrive.
NINE LONG YEARS - DIJON IS FINALLY HOME
Dijon spent nine long years at Tree House waiting for his forever
home. We “inherited” Dijon when we took over the care of the
cats from the now defunct rescue group that occupied what
is now our Bucktown Branch Adoption Center. When we first
DRAGONHEART
DIJON
encountered Dijon, he was nervous and slow to trust people,
but he became very close to one special boy, a cat named Jean
Luc. The pair were inseparable for many years, sleeping together
and comforting one another. Witnessing their special bond was
always a treat for visitors!
S a d l y, J e a n L u c p a s s e d a w a y i n 2 0 1 4 , a n d D i j o n w a s
understandably lost. Hungry for affection, Dijon’s curiosity for
human comfort began to increase. While he remained cautious,
Dijon slowly and steadily came out of his shell. Additionally,
being so fond of the company of other cats, Dijon quickly
welcomed new cat companions to share his favorite basket,
proving what a good host he could be in the FIV colony room at
our Bucktown Branch.
Then, last April, Benjamin Carls visited Tree House in search of
a new friend and a companion for his beloved cat, Tree House
alum, Gentleman Kitty. Benjamin spent time getting to know all of
the amazing cats at our Bucktown Branch, but Dijon’s newfound
courage and curiosity stood out. Benjamin knew that Dijon was
the right mix of cuddly and laid-back to bond with Kitty. Shortly
after Dijon arrived in his new home, Benjamin reported that
the two cats were getting along very well. Dijon has adjusted
wonderfully into his new home and enjoys the company of his
new best friend along with his new human. This is one happy
ending that was worth the wait!

DR. HANNA KA
MEDICAL MIRACLES
IN SEVERE PAIN: HER LEG BROKEN, BONE EXPOSED,
DR. HANNA KA NEEDED EMERGENCY CARE
Last year, just before Hanukkah, a beautiful gray cat was abandoned
at Tree House Headquarters with a traumatic leg injury. She was
only a few months old and in severe pain. Her hind leg was broken,
and the bone was exposed. She also had deep muscle wounds in
both of her hind legs. We don’t know what had happened to this
adorable kitten, but she needed our help.
We transferred her to an emergency veterinary clinic that initially
recommended amputation. But we wanted to give her the best
chance that we could to heal and have a full life; therefore, we
took a more conservative approach and had her leg set and wounds
treated. She then returned to Tree House for recovery. Aptly named
Dr. Hanna Ka, she made it clear that she was one tenacious girl and
was not going to give up. To our excitement, within only a couple
of days, she began attempting to walk on her hind leg!
Over the next couple of weeks, she made incredible progress. Hanna’s
wound continued to heal, and she began walking in her cage with
no signs of pain. She was soon well enough to begin roaming the
first floor of Tree House Headquarters. She remained timid, which
is understandable given the trauma she had experienced, but when
allowed to approach people on her own terms, her affectionate
side blossomed. Hanna was a very curious girl and was not bashful
about jumping up into an unsuspecting lap to check out the variety
of interesting items on the desktops in our offices.
While she has a slight limp, it does not slow her down, and Hanna
is a very active girl. She made fast friends with another specialneeds cat, a kitten named Sarafina, who suffers from cerebellar
hypoplasia. The two girls loved playtime and became tightly bonded.
Tree House clinic staffer, Elizabeth Lopez, fostered Sarafina,
but shortly after this special kitten was admitted to Tree House,
Elizabeth could not stop thinking about her and decided to give her
a forever home. Elizabeth had also become very attached to Hanna
8
after helping care for her and was taken by Hanna and Sarafina’s
special bond. She knew she did not want to separate the girls and
decided to take the pair home together.
Hanna, now known as Pepper Potts, and Sarafina’s existing bond
allowed for an easy transition into their new home, and the girls
now spend most of their days running and playfully tumbling with
each other. They’ve met their new siblings which include three
dogs who have been intrigued by the kittens. Elizabeth shared,
“When meeting the canines of the house, Hanna was initially timid,
but it only took a few minutes before she was stretching out only
a couple of feet away from the pups.” The kittens have also met
Elizabeth’s other two adult cats, and the crew has been doing very
well together. “Hanna is instantly friendly and affectionate with all
the humans she meets, and by far, her favorite activity is hunting
the feather toy and dragging her prey triumphantly away.” We are
so glad that both Sarafina and Hanna found a loving home together.
LOST BY THE EL, HIS LEGS ABNORMALLY BOWED,
SEÑOR CONTRERAS WAS STRUGGLING
Señor Contreras is a sweet cat who was found lost and alone at
a Chicago El train station, the Red Line’s Loyola stop. Thankfully, a
Good Samaritan noticed him and stopped to help. This sweet black
cat seemed to be in trouble, and she noticed an abnormality in his
legs. His front legs bowed outward while his hind legs bowed inward.
He was very friendly, and she brought him to Tree House for care.
Señor was in serious condition when he arrived. He was suffering
from a severe URI (upper respiratory infection) and was unable to
bend both of his elbows and had pain in his legs when touched.
Additionally, he was missing many of his teeth, and most of
those which remained were decaying. We diagnosed Señor with
degenerative joint disease and arthritis. His case was so severe
that his legs were now malformed, and he struggled with joint pain
and significantly reduced mobility. It is heartbreaking to imagine
him struggling alone outside.
We became concerned as Señor’s health continued to decline. He
developed a dangerously high fever, oral ulcers, and increased nasal
discharge. Yet, even through all that he was experiencing, this little
guy had a generous and sweet demeanor. We cared for Señor at our
resident clinic to nurse him back to health. He received injections
for his arthritis, and we provided him with added comfort to ease
his pain. After a couple of months of care, Señor was well enough
to begin roaming the first floor of our Headquarters and quickly
captured the hearts of everyone he met. His cuteness was only
increased by his “lazy” tongue (thanks in part to his missing teeth)
which made him look like he was constantly “blowing raspberries”.
It wasn’t long before Señor captured the attention of Emma Jo
Schumacher and Mike Danovich, who visited Tree House in search
of a new friend. They knew they had to give Señor the forever home
he deserved. “King Richard Toothless III (as he is now named), or
R2 as we fondly call him, is doing so well in our home! His big
sister Giselle [their other guardian cat] has really been showing
him what it’s like to be a pampered kitty. We recently started him
on a bone broth supplement that has not only helped his chronic
sniffles but really seems to have improved his mobility. He climbs
up on anything he can reach with his creaky little legs!” Emma Jo
gushed, “Best of all, he is the biggest cuddle bug in the world. Most
nights he sleeps under the covers next to me. He loves to meet new
SEÑOR CONTRERAS
This friendly cat was in grave condition with deep, penetrating
bite wounds which were seriously infected, covering much of his
face. He also had lesions on his legs, was battling a severe URI
(upper respiratory infection), had serious dental decay, loose teeth,
and a mass on his tongue which we removed. Mike also tested
positive for FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus). We placed him
in one of our isolation units for intensive care. The combination
of a traumatic injur y, an infection, and a URI in a cat whose
immune system is already compromised by FIV, put Mike in a
life-threatening situation. He struggled with high fevers, loss of
appetite, and lethargy. We were very concerned for this sweet
cat’s long-term health.
Mike’s recovery was a slow and difficult road. For two long months,
Mike’s health was precarious as we continued to monitor his
progress. Finally, his wounds began to heal, his fever subsided,
his teeth and gums healed, and his appetite returned. Mike was
going to make it!
Mike was eventually well enough to be placed in our FIV colony
where he began to thrive. The joyful cat inside emerged, and it did
not take long before he caught the eye of an adoring fan. Krys C.
adopted Mike B., whom she fondly refers to as Mikey, just before
Christmas last year.

people and will immediately snuggle up next to them. We couldn’t
have found a more perfect little angel, and we are so grateful
to the Tree House team for taking such good care of him.”
Señor even has a fan club online and has his own instragram
p a g e – c h e c k i t o u t a t @ k i n g r i c h a r d t o o t h l e s s 3 . We a r e s o
grateful that he found a forever home where he receives the
comfort, care, and love he truly deser ves.
SERIOUS FACIAL WOUNDS AND SEVERE ILLNESS MIKE B.’S DIFFICULT ROAD TO RECOVERY
Mike B. was a stray cat who was suffering from serious
facial wounds (obviously bite wounds) when he was rescued
by the Tree House Community Cats Team. We took him to our
Bucktown Clinic for emergency care before transferring him
to our resident clinic at Tree House Headquarters for ongoing
intensive care.
And Mike soon had a new best friend when Krys adopted another
FIV+ Tree House cat named Diamond Jim, whom she now calls
Chuck. It took a while for the boys to warm up to one another;
however, Krys shared that they are now cuddling together. “Now
that both kitties are on the same diet, they have no problem
eating with each other. They now get along just fine, and I even
caught them grooming each other recently! They both sleep in
bed with me and play together. I’m surprised they advanced so
quickly, and I couldn’t be happier! Thanks so much to Tree House
for all of the assistance!” What a wonderful happy ending for
two very special cats.

COMMUNITY CATS
TREE HOUSE’S COMMUNITY CATS PROGRAM is the only program
of its kind in Chicago and one of the most innovative in the country,
combining targeted TNR (trap-neuter-return) with grassroots
community outreach to directly reduce the number of cats on the
streets. In addition to helping cats through TNR, a vital component
of our program involves educating people to care for cats in their
community, bringing us closer to a no-kill Chicago. Our program also
offers a humane trap lending bank, low-cost winter shelters (free
to low-income caretakers), access to our Pet Food Pantry (which
provides free food to individuals facing economic challenges as
well as colony managers who may have ten or more cats under
their care), “Helping Community Cats” workshops, community cat
counseling hotlines, and need-based trapping assistance. Far more
than simply spaying and neutering cats, this is a comprehensive
program designed to work toward the goal of providing a quality
of life for feral cats as well as reducing the number of stray cats
in our neighborhoods.
10
In 2015, we added 50 new foster families, bringing our total to
212. We also continued to expand our relationships with our pet
store adoption partners. We are proud to partner with PetSmart
(Roscoe Village and Northbrook) and Petco (Roscoe Village, Rogers
Park, and Ashland), who hosted many adoption events and donated
much-needed pet food to our Pet Food Pantry. We are grateful for
the support, and these partnerships helped Tree House adopt an
additional 144 cats last year.
We are also encouraged by the growth in sponsored colonies. We
currently sponsor 609 registered feral cat colony caretakers who
actively practice TNR and voluntarily care for nearly 3,500 community
cats (in compliance with the 2007 Cook County Managed Care of
Feral Cats ordinance). The Community Cats Program has not only
enabled us to save thousands of cats and kittens from the streets
and prevent the birth of countless more, it has helped us more
than triple our average annual adoption rate over the last decade.
TNR TARGET TRAPPING PROJECT MILESTONE – MORE THAN 3,500 FREE ROAMING CATS SPAYED/NEUTERED
2015 marked a milestone for Tree House. On June 30th, our
Community Cats Program completed a two-year TNR (trap-neuterreturn) Targeted Trapping Project thanks to a grant renewal
from PetSmart Charities. The funding supported providing 2,000
spay/neuter packages (including sterilization, vaccination, and
parasite treatment) for free-roaming cats at our Bucktown Clinic.
This successful project has been ongoing since 2011 when Tree
House received our first TNR Targeted Trapping Project grant from
PetSmart Charities to provide 1,500 spay/neuter packages for
free-roaming cats in a 15-month time frame. An exciting aspect of
this grant renewal allowed us to expand our target area from our
original focus of Logan Square and Humboldt Park to include the
underserved Chicago neighborhoods of Garfield Park, Austin, West
Town, North Lawndale, and Little Village (target zip codes 60651,
60647, 60623, and 60624).
This trapping project has had a significant impact in communities with
the greatest need, neighborhoods such as Lawndale/Little Village,
which had one of the highest number of cat relinquishments and stray
nuisance calls in Chicago as reported by Chicago Animal Care and
Control (CACC). Additionally, roughly 40% of the residents in these
areas live below the poverty line. With the growth of this project,
Tree House now has 181 volunteer cat colony caretakers and more
than 1,200 cats in managed colonies in our target neighborhoods.
By serving communities which truly have the most need and the
least support, we have been able to achieve substantial progress
in reducing the number of stray cats and euthanized animals and
progress in realizing our goal of creating a no-kill Chicago and nation.
PetSmart Charities is currently in the process of reorganizing
their grant-giving efforts, and therefore we are unable to apply
for further support at this time. Yet, we continue to further our
TNR efforts and focus in much of the same target area thanks
to generous grant funding from the Bernice Barbour Foundation,
Inc., and the BISSELL Pet Foundation as well as a grant from the
Elinor Patterson Baker Foundation, which we received through a
partnership with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)
Pets for Life (PLF) program.
TREE HOUSE BDVM SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC – WORLD SPAY DAY
In Februar y, 2015, thanks to support from the Cook County Rebate Program, which offers rebates for
sterilization and rabies vaccination services, we celebrated National Spay/Neuter Month and World Spay
Day by offering free and deeply discounted spay/neuter packages to low-income guardians as well as
colony caretakers. Despite the cold, snowy weather, Tree House performed 49 surgeries during World Spay
Day and 285 surgeries in the month of February!
The majority of the cats treated at our clinic are free-roaming cats brought in through our Community Cats
Program. Community cats live in every neighborhood of the city as well as in the suburbs and rural areas.
Our Community Cats Team works throughout Chicagoland with a special focus on underserved neighborhoods
on Chicago’s west side. We humanely TNR (trap-neuter-return) free-roaming cats and bring them to our
clinic for sterilization, vaccination, parasite treatment, and microchipping, and we educate feral cat colony
caretakers how to best care for them. TNR is widely considered to be the most effective and humane way
to reduce free-roaming cat populations. While many of the cats involved in our program were born outside
and are feral (unsocialized to people), some are abandoned pets who can be re-socialized to humans in a
relatively short period of time. Others are small kittens who quickly become friendly. In addition to helping
solve the issue of overpopulation, our Community Cats Program allows us to rescue friendly cats and help
them find the forever homes they deserve instead of living a life on the streets.
THE BELMONT CENTRAL HOARDING CATS – UPDATE!
Last summer, some of you may have seen or read stories of a
home located in Chicago’s Belmont Central neighborhood in
which more than 100 cats, most of them black, were living in
unbelievably inhumane conditions. The homeowner had been
evicted but was returning to feed the cats. In late July, right
in the middle of “kitten season,” Tree House received a phone
call from Chicago Animal Care & Control (CACC) regarding this
situation. The cats were living in squalor in a bungalow going
through foreclosure. The condition of the home and the situation
these cats were in was the worst we’ve seen; the house was
littered with boxes and items piled everywhere, and there were
no litter boxes inside the home, which had become piled with
nearly a foot of feces in places.
Tree House acted quickly as a court order had deemed the house
unsafe and uninhabitable and forced it to be boarded up. We
were concerned about the cats’ well-being and wanted to make
sure we rescued all of the cats, worried they might be trapped in
the home. Together with CACC, we were able to rescue all of the
cats and placed as many as we could. Due to the overwhelming
number of cats rescued in a short period of time, Tree House
lacked adequate boarding space. We created three off-site, triage
centers, and with the help of an amazing group of volunteers,
we were able to provide the care and comfort the cats needed
until we could find adequate placement for them all.
We are thrilled to share that in early January of 2016, we placed
all but two kittens we had rescued in a forever home - 77 cats
in total. Many of the cats were feral or semi-feral, so we sought
safe and comfortable colonies for these cats to live out their
lives. We are grateful to the many individuals who stepped up
to help these cats in need and were able to secure heated barns
and sanctuaries for them all. Eight cats were even relocated to
a beautiful sanctuary in Wyoming thanks to a generous animal
lover! We were also overwhelmed with the incredible generosity
of so many people who donated to help with the care and rescue
of these cats with food, litter, carriers, and supplies. We received
more than $34,000 in donations and donated items for the black
cats of Belmont Central.

COMMUNITY CATS – SAVING CATS
FROM A LIFE ON THE STREETS
PROGRAMS
Tree House is so much more than a shelter: our many unique programs
and services truly distinguish us in the animal welfare field. Following
are 2015 program highlights and accomplishments:
SOCIALIZATION PROGRAM
Tree House admits kittens and cats who have been living outdoors and
surviving through all types of challenging situations, many of whom
have never had the chance to learn to trust humans or to know how
easy the life of an indoor cat can be. As soon as cats enter our shelter,
our staff begins the process of socializing these frightened animals by
providing them with extra time and a lot of gentle care. Sometimes we
place cats directly into foster homes to receive one-on-one attention in
a quiet home environment. Others are placed on our adoption floor to
begin acclimating to shelter life more quickly. Our clinic and adoption
staff maintains a list of cats and kittens who need a little extra love
and attention. The Tree House socialization team utilizes treats, play
therapy, and lots of love to assist cats who are frightened and/or timid.
It is thanks to the help of our amazing volunteers and foster parents
that we are able to help even more cats come out of their shells and
meet their future families!
BEHAVIOR COUNSELING
We continue to expand our programs, adding new counselors and
implementing training from the Humane Society of the United States,
to enable us to most effectively communicate information and address
common behavioral issues such as litter box problems, introducing cats
to new homes, pets, or children, and inter-cat tension. We offer behavior
counseling seven days a week, handling calls from all over the U.S.
Our goal is to help cats stay in their homes and avoid relinquishments
due to behavioral issues, most of which are resolvable. In 2015, we
performed approximately 2,000 consultations. Another helpful resource
is our Cat Care Guide - Everything You’ve Always Wanted to Know
About Cats, available on our website. If you have a behavior question
or want to order a hard copy of our Guide, contact (773) 784-5488
ext. 0 or email [email protected].
COMMUNITY CATS PROGRAM
The Tree House Community Cats Program is the most comprehensive
program of its kind in Chicago and one of the most innovative in the
country, combining targeted TNR (trap-neuter-return) with grassroots
12
community outreach to directly reduce the number of cats on the
streets. A vital component of Community Cats involves educating
people to care for cats in their community and to help others through
TNR, bringing us closer to a no-kill Chicago. Community Cats offers a
humane trap-lending bank, low-cost winter shelters (free to low-income
caretakers), access to our Pet Food Pantry, “Helping Community Cats”
workshops, voicemail and email counseling hotlines, and need-based
trapping assistance.
Key accomplishments in 2015 include:
• Over 1,500 feral cats TNRed
• 149 feral cats relocated through our Cats at Work Program,
providing “green” rodent control
• Over 500 insulated winter shelters built and distributed
• 451 friendly cats and kittens rescued from the streets
• 317 cats admitted to one of our adoption centers
• 66 cats placed in forever homes through off-site adoption
• 24 kittens adopted through our partnership with the
Anti-Cruelty Society
• 33 community cats placed for adoption at our Petco and
PetSmart partner stores
• 4 hoarding projects managed with a total of 245 cats rescued
In late July, Tree House received a call from Chicago Animal
Care & Control (CACC) regarding a hoarding case in Chicago’s
Belmont Central neighborhood. More than one hundred cats
were living in horrifying, squalid conditions in a home that was
in foreclosure. Tree House stepped in to act quickly on behalf of
the cats, many of whom were in poor shape and very frightened
of humans. Together with CACC, Tree House trapped all of the
cats, establishing a temporary triage while we vetted, spayed/
neutered, and found placement for the cats. Many of the cats
were feral or semi-feral, and we worked to secure heated barns
and sanctuaries with compassionate caregivers. Eight cats were
even relocated to a beautiful sanctuary in Wyoming, thanks to
the generosity of one caring individual! For information about
Community Cats, contact (773) 784-5488 ext. 234 or email TNR@
TreeHouseAnimals.org.
CACC TRANSFER PROGRAM
Our partnership with Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC) is
redefining our role in local animal rescue. Over the past year, we
continued to partner with more foster parents, volunteers, and
rescue groups, helping us save more cats than ever! In 2015, we
transferred 1,314 cats and 2 dogs out of CACC. Of those, 408
went to one of our rescue partner groups, 531 were adopted from
Tree House, 183 were adopted from their foster homes via our
“Rescue and Adoption Ambassadors”, 29 were adopted through Tree
House’s foster-to-adopt program, 75 were relocated to managed
cat colonies, and 90 are still in care and waiting for their forever
homes. There are a variety of ways to help us rescue CACC cats.
For more information, contact (773) 784-5488 ext. 0 or email
[email protected].
ADOPTION PARTNERS PROGRAM
Tree House is proud to partner with several Chicagoland pet stores.
This program enables us to bring rescued cats to local pet stores to
be adopted. Tree House is proud to partner with PetSmart (Roscoe
Village and Northbrook) and Petco (Roscoe Village, Rogers Park,
and Ashland). Stop by one of our adoption partner stores to find
your new friend.
KITTEN ON DECK PROGRAM
In 2014, Tree House launched this new program to save neonatal
orphans from needless euthanasia. A sad reality of kitten season is
that Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC) typically euthanizes
bottle-baby kittens the same evening that they arrive because
they do not have available staff to feed these orphans overnight
or the resources to keep these kittens alive. The Kitten on Deck
Program helps save orphaned bottle-baby kittens and end their
needless euthanasia by transferring at-risk, unweaned kittens
who arrive at CACC without their mothers out of CACC. Some
are fostered by Tree House volunteers and admitted to one of
our adoption centers while others go to our Transfer Partners (a
network of approved rescue groups and shelters). In 2015, Tree
House rescued 340 bottle and “mush” babies from CACC. For more
information, contact (773) 784-5488 ext. 0 or email Transfers@
TreeHouseAnimals.org.
FOSTER PROGRAM
We are so thankful for the caring foster volunteers who open their
homes to our cats and kittens. Because of them, we are able to
save more lives every year. Our foster homes provide the comfort,
care, and time these cats need to grow and heal before coming to
Tree House or in some cases going directly to their new permanent
home. In 2015, approximately 1,000 cats passed through more
than 200 volunteer foster homes. However, we are always in need
of more foster parents. For more information, contact Ollie at
(773) 784-5488 ext. 228 or email [email protected].
HUMANE EDUCATION & JUNIOR VOLUNTEERS
With a focus on enhancing awareness, encouraging responsibility, and
inspiring compassion, our Humane Education and Junior Volunteer
Programs empower individuals to take action to address issues such as
companion animal homelessness, overpopulation, neglect, and cruelty.
In 2015, we impacted 2,469 individuals (including many students via
our participation at Chicago Public Schools). That’s more than double
the number of individuals we reached the previous year. This is due
in part to the success of the CARE Program, a five-week, humane
education program that focuses on inspiring and empowering Chicago’s
youth to approach animal and community welfare problems with CARE
(compassion, awareness, responsibility, and empathy).
connections. For more information about either program, contact Leona
at (773) 784-5488 ext. 301 or email [email protected].
ANIMAL-ASSISTED THERAPY (AAT) PROGRAM
Our Animal-Assisted Therapy program has served Chicagoland
for 43 years. This unique program brings the joy of animals to
individuals living in nursing homes, senior assisted-living centers,
women’s shelters, and other locations by taking our adoptable
cats to these locations for visits. In 2015, nearly 20 volunteers
regularly visited 14 different Chicago facilities and more than
1,000 residents, allowing natural, social interactions to take
place between the volunteers, cats, and residents. Our continued
partnership with local nonprofit 1FUR1 has helped our growth!
1FUR1 assists in acquiring new locations and helping manage
communications with coordinators of newly added facilities. If you
know a facility that could benefit from the healing power of the
human-animal bond or would like to volunteer, contact Chelsea at
(773) 784-5488 ext. 0 or email [email protected].
GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP
Tree House was a trailblazer in grief support for pet loss in
Chicago and has been offering support since 2004. We are deeply
aware of the despair one feels at the loss of a beloved companion
animal. As this is a very singular experience for a pet guardian, it
is one that is deeply understood by those who have also lived it.
Giving this experience a voice and a community can provide some
measure of relief. The very distinctive tenderness of the human/
animal bond deserves recognition so that healing can take place.
In 2015, 81 individuals utilized our grief support services. Our
monthly sessions are facilitated by therapist Terri Treiman, LCSW,
who is a long-time Tree House volunteer and pet guardian. Grief
Groups are generally held 10:30 a.m. the first Saturday of each
month at Tree House Headquarters. This group is not exclusive to
Tree House adopters, and anyone experiencing a loss is welcome.
To learn more, contact Terri at (773) 784-5488 ext. 227 or email
[email protected].
PET FOOD PANTRY
Our Pet Food Pantry is a critical program that provides cat and
dog food, cat litter, pet toys, and other supplies free of charge
to individuals facing financial difficulties to help them care for
their pets as well as prevent people in need from being forced
to relinquish their companion animals. Additionally, our Pantry
supports our registered colony caretakers by providing food for
the feral cats under their care (many of whom care for ten or
more cats). In 2015, Tree House distributed approximately 300
pounds of cat and dog food and 75 pounds of litter a week to
our clients. Our Pantry regularly serves 120 clients each month.
Additionally, clients in need receive countless toys, leashes, litter
boxes, and treats to help them with the comfort and care of their
pets. This program relies heavily on donations from our supporters
who drop off supplies at either of our locations or send us gifts
from our Amazon Wishlist. If you would like to make a donation
or have any questions, contact (773) 784-5488 ext. 0 or email
[email protected].
OUR VOLUNTEERS
We can’t thank our volunteers enough for their hard work and
unending support of Tree House. It is because of all of our volunteers
that we are able to do the work we do. In 2015, we had 526 active
volunteers who donated approximately 24,000 hours of their time
to help our cause. To learn more, contact (773) 784-5488 ext. 228
or email [email protected].
Entering its twentieth year, our Junior Volunteer Program provides
youth, ages 11 to 15, with hands-on opportunities within the shelter
to learn more about cats and their care as well as to make humane

2015 BLACK CAT BALL
EVENTS
2015 was another phenomenal year for events at Tree House. With
more visibility year after year, we are able to spread the word about
our lifesaving programs and rescue more cats! Additionally, a number
of individuals supported Tree House including individual fundraisers,
organizations, and sponsors.
FUNDRAISING EVENTS AND PERSONAL FUNDRAISERS
Our unique and engaging events put the “fun” in fundraising. With
a great blend of annual favorites and new opportunities, there was
something for everyone in 2015. Additionally, we are so grateful to the
many individuals and organizations who supported Tree House and
helped raise money through their personal fundraising efforts as well
as events. The numbers speak for themselves – we raised more than
$188,000, which goes a long way toward helping the cats in our care.
Our annual Fat Cat Tuesday, Mardi Gras benefit, was anything but
ordinary. Featuring a veggie buffet with Cajun classics, a “Show Us Your
Kitties” contest, and more, this event helped individuals beat Chicago’s
February freeze. Our deepest gratitude to Trader Todd’s, who donated
all of the food, drinks, and event space for this event, allowing 100% of
ticket proceeds to go right to the kitties.
Spring means one thing at Tree House - kittens! Our 6th Annual Kitten
Shower, generously hosted by Chicago Party Animals and sponsored by
Fetch Pet Care, was a rousing success, raising more than $3,700 for
our tiniest residents. Guests cuddled with adoptable kittens, snapped
portraits in our photo booth, and played games. A warm thank you to Josie
Villasenor, Chicago Party Animals, Fetch Pet Care, and Guthries Tavern.
NEW BUILDING – GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY
In June, we officially broke ground on Tree House’s new Adoption
Center and Veterinary Clinic in Rogers Park with a celebratory ceremony
attended by community leaders including Illinois State Representative
Sara Feigenholtz and Chicago’s 50th Ward Alderman Debra Silverstein
along with Tree House founders and friends. The energy was electric
as we put the first shovels into the ground! We can’t wait to celebrate
our much-anticipated Grand Opening this summer. Thank you to Justin
Almosch and friends for their lovely music and to Grounds and Hounds
for providing fresh brewed coffee for our guests.

PHOTO COMPLIMENTS OF SPRUNG PHOTOGRAPHY
We kicked off the summer with a hot cocktail party in a cool loft
venue. Thanks to our generous host Josie Villasenor of Chicago Party
Animals event venue, guests of our first-ever Pop Up for Purrs event
supported the cats while sipping cocktails, enjoying live music, and
taking a chance on our pick-a-prize raffle. Thank you to Realtors to
the Rescue and Ooey Gooey Pet Products for sponsoring the event
space. A round of applause to Jill Houk of Amazing Edibles, Blair from
Carothers Catering, All Natural Chicago, Punk Rock House Wife Catering,
and Guthries Tavern for keeping our guests well-fed and hydrated.
Our 10th Annual Stray Cat Strut was a hit! Congratulations and
many thanks to Team Agogo, who raised $2,595, and top individual
fundraiser Ron Walker, who raised $2,155, in support of our work.
Gratitude goes to event sponsors, Trader Todd’s, Old Chicago Inn,
Boehringer Ingelheim, Merrick, and Castor & Pollux.
We got out our leis and flip flops for an end-of-summer bash at our
favorite beer garden at Trader Todd’s. Guests enjoyed a veggie buffet
and libations while taking in the great summer weather near the fullsized sailboat on the back patio. The event raised more than $1,800 in
support of our efforts to rescue and place close to 80 cats who were from
a horrifying hoarding case in Chicago’s Belmont Central neighborhood.
In September, we partnered with our friends at Chicago Cat Rescue
again to bring the Chicago Internet Cat Video Festival to Chicago. It
was a day-long extravaganza with three shows at the Athenaeum
Theater, a meet and greet with Lil Bub, games, and fabulous kitty
face paint and glitter lips from Starship Salon! Many thanks to
emcees Alana Greylak and Kris Flanagan, hosts of CATastrophes,
and Lil Bub and her dude, Mike Bridavsky. Thanks also to our event
sponsors, Aimee and Amy at Cat Care, Dander, Fresh Step, Kriser’s
Prime Taste Treats, and Nature’s Logic.
The 2015 Black Cat Ball was held at the extraordinary Redmoon
Spectacle Hall. Guests were delighted by unique performers,
delicious food from Amazing Edibles, a very special Art Installation
commemorating our rich history, and surprises around every corner.
Our special guest this year was Kathy “Kat” Garver of the TV show,
Family Affair. We also welcomed back emcees Tree House Board
Member, Steve Dale, along with Paul Lisnek, both from Chicago’s
own WGN. We are so grateful for the support of our sponsors, Pet’s
First Veterinary Clinic, Merrick, Matrix Partners, Alan T. Prescott,
Kendra Scott Jewelry, Cat Hospital of Chicago, M&M Special Events,
Chicago Veterinary and Emergency Speciality Center (now MedVet
Chicago) and Blum Animal Hospital. Our deepest appreciation to
the Tree House Special Events Committee who continue to make
the Black Cat Ball bigger and better year after year!
More than 300 friends of Tree House joined us at our 16th Annual
Lights of Love Open House and Lighting Ceremony to honor and
remember those special people and pets in our lives as well as
celebrate the holiday season. Guests enjoyed our much-anticipated
holiday bazaar, bake-sale, and behind-the-scenes tours. This year’s
event was generously sponsored by Animal Ark, Heal Veterinary
Clinic, Chicago Veterinary and Emergency Specialty Center (now
MedVet Chicago), and ComEd. A big thank you to Goddess and Grocer
and Taste of Lebanon for providing delicious food for our guests.
There are so many wonderful people who make all of our fundraising
events possible! Our deepest gratitude goes to Chicago’s First Lady
River Cruises, the Chicago Architecture Foundation, and Steve Dale for
making our Puss ‘N Boats Chicago Architecture River Cruise a success
year after year. Thanks also to Bob Jones and all of the talented artists
and technicians that celebrate with us three times a year at Tats for
Cats at Insight Studios; Samantha Martin and the Amazing Acro-cats;
Lil Bub and her dude, Mike Bridavsky, along with Reckless Records
for holding a Lil Bub Record Release Party in support of Tree House;
Feast Bar and Restaurant, Debbie Sharpe, and all of the talented staff
at Goddess Restaurant Group for hosting our annual Pour for a Paw
wine tasting in December; and Virginia Carstarphen and Todd Hyatt for
not only hosting several events at Trader Todd’s and the annual New
Year’s Eve cocktail party at Room 13 but for their ongoing support.
Thanks to everyone for helping us save more lives!

ADOPTION/EDUCATION EVENTS
We thank our friends at the Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago for
allowing us to host twice-monthly Community Cats Workshops.
T h a n k s a s w e l l t o o u r p a r t n e r s , t h e B r o o k f i e l d Z o o , Pe t c o ,
PetSmart, and Realtors to the Rescue, we were able to educate
community members on the importance of spay/neuter, our
Community Cats Program, and TNR (trap-neuter-return) along
with awareness for special needs and FIV cats. Our outreach
efforts allowed us to rehome an additional 144 cats at events
and satellite adoption centers! Thanks so much to all of our
partner organizations, businesses, and volunteers who made
this possible.
MORE WAYS YOU HELPED TREE HOUSE CATS IN 2015
Tree House is very lucky to have a supportive community of neighbors,
small businesses, and groups who helped us raise money, gather muchneeded supplies, and increase awareness of our organization and efforts.
Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to Alana Greylak and Kris Flanagan
for hosting a Happy Meower event at Nisei Lounge and Eric Pakey for
hosting Karts for Kats, an N64 Mario Kart tournament. Additionally, we
are grateful to Chelsea Alexander for hosting a Kitten Therapy party and
Amy Minick for hosting the Pussyfoot Revue Burlesque Show. Thanks as
well to Hawthorne Racetrack for giving us the opportunity to talk about
the track cats (feral cats living at the racecourse), and Farm Sanctuary’s
Gene Baur and Andersonville bookstore, Women and Children First, for
holding a book reading. Andersonville’s Hamburger Mary’s continued
their support by hosting two Charity Hambingo Nights on behalf of Tree
House, Kendra Scott Jewelry had a Giveback Shopping Night for our
supporters, and Rachel Rippie and the Dream Theater held a benefit
performance of A Christmas Carol.
We also want to thank all of our business partners who place
donation boxes at their counters: New York Bagel and Bialy, Manny’s
Restaurant, Lather Hair Salon, Mount Sinai Hospital, BZAEDS, and
Cat Hospital of Chicago. Together they raised almost $400 for the
cats. Are you interested in placing a donation box at your business?
For more information, contact Linda at 773-784-5488 ext. 230 or

REMEMBERING
We remember Tree House resident cats whom we lost in 2015 (and honor all the beloved cats lost last year). Every cat who passes
through our doors is welcome to stay as long as it takes to find the perfect home…even if that means that they’re with us their entire
lives. Some of the following cats spent many years with us; others arrived in such horrible health or with such severe injuries that all
we could do was humanely end their suffering. Whether they were with us days or years, we loved them all the same.
