MOOMBA: Making This World A Better Place
My Only Obstacle Must Be Attitude
th
The 4 annual MOOMBA assembly at John Adams Middle School was held Thursday, November 17th. The focus of the assembly is
to see how people can make a positive difference. This year, our focus is on the water crisis. Teenagers and kids suffer from not having
enough quality food and water to survive. A large percentage of people don’t have clean water and that causes the life span to be really
short. Global Trust is working with our school to make a difference to raise funds to install clean water for small communities around the
world. The goal is to make a positive difference for kids around the world.
The assembly began with a short introduction from the Principle for a Day winner, Ryan McGuire, then a song by the Norseman
Choir. Then the Chairman of the H to O company (Hope 2 Others), Rob Kramer introduced himself and talked about the troubles of water
in third world countries, where many people struggle to survive with almost no access to clean water. People suffer from diseases due to
water infected with diseases and many have died. He showed a video on the situation that n Bangladesh. The video itself is the proof of all
the troubles the people live with everyday. People suffer and die from either disease-carrying water or no water at all. In fact, every three
seconds a child dies of a water-related illness.
Students were introduced to a plan that can save thousands of lives. We pan to sell cases of water and all profits made will go
directly to those who need water. The money can be used to build things that can help gather water for them. Prizes will be given to topsellers. After, the Norsemen Choir sang another few inspirational songs as the assembly come to an end.
An Interview with Global Water
Trust President
Tom, the Global Water Trust company president has been to
Bangladesh, Napal, Thailand, and is on his way to Africa.
Africa and Asia are the two continents where the most deaths
occurred from having no clean water. There are three main
symptoms from having no clean wate; fever, diarrhea, and
cancer. 4,500 children die every day from having no clean
water. Tom shared that the filters that we bring to these schools
benefit 8,000 school children. John Adams Middle School is
the first school in California that Global Water Trust has come
to and we can make a difference. To make a positive
difference, you can use less water, be involved in the Quench
Program, sell water, and fund safe water programs. For more
information to make a difference or just to learn about the
program log on to www.globalwatertrust.org

AVID
By Kelly Merino
We got a chance to talk with Ms.
Lang, the Chairwoman of JAMS
AVID.
What` s the purpose of AVID?
It` s a program for kids to help them
prepare for college. It targets underrepresented students and students
who have potential to get good
grades and potential to perform in
the middle.
What do you do in AVID?
Half the time is spent is collaborations where students help
each other to solve problems by using high-level questioning.
The other half is spent working on activities to improve
student’s study skills such as Cornell notes and Socratic
Seminars and other academic activities. We also do activities
that help improve and other self- esteem that will help us in and
outside of school. We also have fun.
What does AVID stand for?
Advancement Via Individual Determination.
We also got to ask Liliana for her thoughts on AVID.
“It` s fun and exciting, but can be difficult at times.
Cornell notes can be difficult, but the rest is ok.

Ms. Kovaric Travels to China
By Jivanto Van Hemert
Ms. Kovaric is going to China in the beginning of December with the People to People
program. This is a program that brings professionals together from different parts of the
world. Rather than having just the diplomats talk where there might be hidden agendas, they
send doctors, lawyers, and teachers to talk to their counterparts across the world. Ms. Kovaric
is going to be involved in 30 hours of conferences talking with other educators in China. She
is very anxious to ask what they think she should teach her students about China. She is
fearing the cold but thinks she will have a great time. She is sorry to leave her students but is
sure that when she returns, the presentations to all of the 7th graders will make up for the lost
time. She will have a presentation of her adventures when she returns.
We wish her a safe trip and know that she will represent our school well.

Every year, Ms. Dipley sponsors the annual Turkey Trot. Every year we have seen the number of
students participating in the event growing and it has been another successful year. Ms. Ramos,
Ms. Monahan, and Ms. Gonzalez won the event after training for three years to recover from their
3rd place finish in 2002. “Ms. Ramos, Ms. Gonzalez and I were so devastated from our 3rd place
finish, we decided to train at altitude to ensure that we would come back with a victory,” comments
Ms. Monahan. Ms. Dipley disqualified the 1st place team because they did not register during the
sign-up period. Ms. Ramos promises that “We will be Back!.”

Veterans Day
Tapping Into Fresh Water
By Ana Frandell
All humans share basic needs essential for survival; food, shelter
and water…
Water: we all drink it, take showers with it daily, flush the toilet with
it, wash our clothes with it, wash our cars with it, play in it, fill a Jacuzzi
with it, and even create theme parks based on it. Here in the United State
we take our abundance of water for granted. For the people that live in
3rd world countries, especially Saharan Africa access to clean water is a
luxury. In most of the villages in Africa, women must walk 4 to 6 hours
to retrieve the day’s supply of potable water for their households. Just
imagine carrying a huge pot of water on your head, while walking from
Santa Monica to downtown L.A. every day.
Due to rapid growth population, poverty, pollution and lack of access
to wells, which can pump up ground water, the goal of fresh clean water
for all seems to be unattainable particularly in developing countries like
Africa. In many poor villages people have to rely on the water that is
easiest to reach through shallow ground water wells, usually less than
10ft deep or mud wholes used by both animals and humans. Even when
there is a stream or river near by these water sources are frequently
polluted with animal and human waste. These poor villages lack the
technology that is available to help them create a more efficient pumping
system.
Water shortage is not posing a problem in Africa alone the problem is
spreading worldwide. It is very clear that everyone needs clean water to
survive. Ninety-nine percent of Earth's water is salty, frozen, or buried
deep underground. Also adequate rainfall is not distributed equally
throughout the world. Soon countries will be fighting wars over this
resource, unless everyone gets involved now!
The human thirst for water is even more important than our hunger for
food. People can survive several weeks without food, but will die in just
a few days without water.
The human body, after all, is more than 75 percent water. The kids in
John Adams can get involved and help this worldwide problem.
Remember to conserve water at home and at school. Read more
information on water shortages and contribute to such organizations such
as the African Well Found and Quench H to O.
By Alex Berry
Arlington West (a program created from Veterans for
Peace, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to
rid the U.S. of war) has been putting crosses up on the
beach right next to the pier for quite a while now, showing
us all the people who gave their lives away for this
useless war. You might have seen this memorial set up
with white, and sometimes red or blue, crosses all along
the beach. People have "assigned" some of these crosses
with real people that have died, leaving flowers, or just
paper messages, and treating each cross with deep
respect.
On Saturday (the day after Veterans day) this program
had carried at least 50 or so coffin-sized boxes in a huge
circle that ran all the way up the street, through the park,
through the promanade, and back to the beach. My father,
my brother Eamon, and I had helped make and carry a
"coffin" draped with a big american flag. With 4 people per
coffin and about 50 or 60 coffins, I'd say that this silent
protest was quite a success. With real veterans from real
wars being there, I could only feel a powerful respect and
pity for the soldiers that have wasted their lives in this war.
8th Graders View
by Maya Zelcer
Hi, my name is Maya and I am in 8th grade. I am
writing this article to let the 6th and 7th graders know that
you need to be ready for 8th grade.
If school has been easy for you and you think that 8th
grade is going to be the same, you are in for a surprise.
You need to be ready for a school until now that school is
really easy but 8th grade is a time when your future
education is beginning. I have some really good teachers
this year and all of my classes are really challenging. It is
good to pay attention in your classes now, because in 8th
grade, the teachers will extend the subjects to a higher
level. If you do not know the things you are learning in 6th
and 7th grade, it is going to be really hard to do what is
expected of you in 8th grade. Although, 8th grade can be
hard, it is one of the best years in middle school. You will
know so many students and by the time you complete 8th
grade, you will know everyone’s name. I know that I am
saying that 8th grade is really hard but you have a whole
year to learn the subjects like U.S. History, Algebra,
Language Arts, and Science. This whole year is pretty
much getting you ready for high school. I have had one of
the best experiences at JAMS and have met such
wonderful people. I am going to be sad that years at
JAMS are ending, but I have to remember that the end is
just the beginning.
Lego Robotics Club
By Richard Gorb
The Lego Competition is back this year. Lego Robotics is a club that lets a team of students build and test their Lego robots using a
RCX unit to perform difficult tasks. This year the John Adams team (A.K.A: Team Revolution Halo) has made it all the way to the state
finals which will be held on December 3, 2005 in Legoland. The team members are Ryder Liu, Steven Luis, David Teetz, Matt France,
Michael Sarfati, Alfredo Rodriguez, Kayla Roy, Ben Sassoon, and myself Richard Gorb. I interviewed Ms. Cady who is the founder of the
Lego club at this school and Pat Eastman who is the coach of the Lego team about how they felt about the club.
How long has the Lego club been at this school?
Ms. Cady: ‘Three years.”
Why did you start the club?
Ms. Cady: “I wanted to know that we had some technology in our seminars.”
How do you feel about this year’s team?
Ms. Cady: “I fell that the team will come together and be successful.”
Why did you want to become the coach of Lego Robotics club?
Ms. Eastman: “Because I thought it would be a challenge and it would be fun.”
What do you think our chances are of winning the state finals?
Ms. Eastman: “I think if everything goes according to plan, we have a good chance.”
If we win the state finals; what will you do next?
Ms. Eastman: “Move on to coaching at SAMO.”

Walk Out of School 11-2-05!!
Drive Out the Bush Regime!
By Alex Barry
November 2.... the anniversary of George W. Bush’s
reelection into office and people demonstrate that have
had enough.
Nationwide, people had organized school/ work
walkouts, and though not quite as successful as we
would have hoped, John Adams Middle School also tried
to take part in this loud protest. Although Samohi had
literally hundreds of kids taking part, a good 20 or so kids
from JAMS were proudly showing off their intolerance
with big signs saying “JAMS STUDENTS AGAINST THE
WAR” on Wilshire Blvd. (at the edge of the 3rd St.
Promanade).
At 12 noon, kids from schools all over the country
tried to walk right out of school. Even though Ms.Ramos
did what she had to do and keep us back, enough of us
got out and when they announced that John Adams
Middle School had gone to help, it made a statement
which made people think.
Samohi however had hundreds of kids, the walked
out of school, through the mall, and to Wilshire Blvd. in a
huge crowd screaming their heads off. At about 3:00 the
protest was over, but people were encouraged to come
to the federal building at 5:00, where there were even
more people! The second protest however, was not as
fun. It didn’t have as much energy as the kids that risked
trouble to make something heard.
The thing that I kept thinking about was the fact
that kids can have political opinion, and even though we
might not be able to explain it clearly, we do want to be
heard. We can’t vote of course, but we want to still have
input and not be shutdown by the adults.
Make yourself politically aware!
Get your voices heard!

Don’t loose your I identity to eating disorders
By: Joana Martin
In the United States alone, about 7 million females and 1
million males suffer from eating disorders, with anorexia
(forced starvation) and bulimia (food binging and purging)
being the two most common. At their most extreme forms,
disorders can lead to serious health and psychological
problems, and even death. There is a lot of pressure to be
thin and we see in magazines and movies that being thin is
O.K. but there is a danger in trying to get think at the
expense of your health. There are many places you can go
to talk to someone if you are struggling with an eating
disorder or you have a friend who is. At school, see your
counselor. What you share with your counselor is
confidential, unless your health is in danger. So, stop by
and see your counselor and get help.

A Death in the Family: Coping with Your Loss
It's never easy when someone in your family must
leave. But remember that loved ones will remain forever in
your heart long after they are gone. Everyone deals with
grief differently and everyone needs a different amount of
time to get better. Some people remember loved ones
through looking at photos, talking about them or by writing
about them. However you choose to grieve is up to you.
You will never stop missing your mom or your brother or
your grandma, but the pain that you feel at first will ease
with time. We have counselors at school to help us deal
with our loss. If you would like more information, please see
your school counselor.

Will this year’s team go Back-to-Back with last year’s first place
finishing team? They are definitely on their way. This year’s
team is off to an early start. Most teams were just selected this
week at other schools while the JAMS team was selected the third
week of September.
The team is working twice a week to develop their project to
teach 5th graders on how to take care of the earth through science.
Friends
Good Luck Team!
Go, TEAM, Go
Good friends can be a great way to help you get through some
tough times. A good way to help you deal with problems is to
reach out to your friends. A good friend will support you and
be there for you when you are missing someone you care
about. Friends will listen and not judge you. Keep yor friends
close and your enimes far.

Catalina
By Helen Davidson
There is nothing better then skipping school and spending time in Catalina to learn about the ocean. JAMS 6th grade students could sign up
for this Science Magnet seminar spent their weekend in the Catalina Island Marine Institute. On the island we learned about sea life and also
land life. In the morning we would eat breakfast and then do activities that would last 2 or 3 hours and then have lunch. After every meal we
got an hour of free time to socialize or work in our log books.
Every 6th grader went snorkeling and did labs. When we went snorkeling we saw fish such as Garabaldies and we saw massive kelp forests.
In labs we would learn about ocean life and we got to pet sharks and sting rays. Catalina was so much fun and we will never forget our
experiences.
Riddle of the Month
Win Cash!
$ THE MISSING DOLLAR RIDDLE $
Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells
them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay the
clerk $10 and go to their room. A few minutes later, the clerk
realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He
asks the bellhop to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just
checked in. The bellhop sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as
he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time
dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that
the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each
of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the
day! Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they
each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night.
We know the bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you
get $29, not $30 which was originally spent.
Where did the other dollar go????

“SITH STRIKES BACK, ONTO OUR SHELVES!!!!” By
Connor Davidson
The release of the Revenge of the Sith DVD has put 280 million
dollars in George Lucas’s pocket. But does the DVD live up to the
hype? Yes and no.
The DVD has hours of extras that are amazing and the movie has
different plot elements that give it the Zing movie watchers love. The
Storyline lives up to its former standards. But it is the same old thing
a war is going on, good guys are tempted by the darkness, and
everybody wears signature black gloves. The only thing that separates
this movie from the others is the very wide range of special effects. I
would say buy it if you are a star wars fan, if not then I would suggest
to pick up a different movie. Keep the mad love for the movies.
Zorro 2
By Jose Graciano
Zorro 2 is the story of what happens to Zorro
after he gets married. The story takes place in
the year that California officially becomes part
of the United States. Zorro’s wife becomes a
spy because someone wants to stop
California from joining the United States. Everyone knows this
except Zorro who makes a fool of himself trying to win back his
wife. He gets thrown into jail by the people his wife works for all
the while, his son is looking for him. If you are looking for a
movie that has a lot of action, I recommend this movie. My
brothers and I really enjoyed it.

When I first bought this game
I thought that it would suck just
like the first one did but it didn’t
suck at all. Instead it was great; I couldn’t stop playing
it until it was time to go to bed. I think that the reason
this game is better is because you can play as a Jedi
this time but in the first one you could only play as a
clone trooper. Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing
wrong with a trooper but only a Jedi has a lightsaber.
But if you’re into that U.S army deal then pick a clone
because they have lots of weapons at there will. All in all
I’d give this game on the E-cliptoe scale a 9 out of 10.
