tabletop electron microscope: "Geo-scope", an interactive digital content on a touch
screen PC to access various earth observation data, science experiments of a stone
bridge and rotational moments, language translation service for cellphones.
■Shabana Origami & Kumihimo Jewelry ̶ A24
Learn the art of origami using Chiyogami Washi paper to create whimsical jewelry,
including sakura pins and earrings. Also learn traditional Kumihimo Japanese
braiding for art-to-wear pendants and bracelets.
■TOMODACHI Initiative ̶ A4
The TOMODACHI Initiative is a public-private partnership, born out of support for
Japan's recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, that invests in the next generation of Japanese and American leaders through educational and cultural exchanges as
well as leadership programs.
■Washington Japanese Language School (WJLS) ̶ A5
WJLS conducts workshops and demonstrations of Japanese calligraphy.
JAPANESE LANGUAGE SCHOOL
The Japan-America Society Language School, now in its 54th year, is the oldest Japanese language school in
the area. All teachers are native Japanese speakers. Classes meet once a week (for 1.5 hours) and are
conducted in the evening in the Society s language classrooms at 1819 L Street NW, conveniently located near
the Farragut North and Farragut West Metro stations in downtown DC.

This year the Sakura Matsuri will feature over 25 hours of live musical and dance
performances on three stages: ANA's Pennsylvania Avenue Stage near 13th street;
the Sakura Stage on 10th Street; and J-Pop Stage, in front of the FBI Building at 9th
Street.
In addition, over 200 martial artists will be demonstrating their skills all day on the
Martial Arts Stage on 12th Street, in front of the Federal Triangle Metro.

AUN J Classic Orchestra 4:45-5:15 at Pennsylvania Stage
AUN J Classic Orchestra incorporates all the major Japanese traditional
musical instruments - taiko, shamisen , koto, shaku-hachi, shinobue and
narimono. Twin brothers Ryohei and Kohei formed AUN - J to convey
the concept that music has no borders, but nationalities, enjoy sharing
the beauty of Japanese culture through its musical instruments.
Tsugaru Shamisen - Dois HAZUKI 11:45-12:00 at Sakura Stage
1:45-2:00 at Pennsylvania Stage
The members of HAZUKI are Ko Takahashi and Misao Habu. Ko won the 1st place
in the All-Japan Tsugaru Shamisen contest in Tokyo in 2001 and Misao received
three crowns in the All-Japan Tsugaru Shamisen contest in 2012 and 2013.
They met at Aomori Japanese Folk Song Festival in 2011 and have been working
together since then.
HIDEKING project

The Sakura Matsuri is proud to announce that HIDEKING project is
traveling to the Festival for their first US performance! They are an
energetic J-pop group that will heat up the Sakura Matsuri with their
passionate songs and electrifying moves!
Stand-up Comedinne- Kaori
4:30-4:45 at Pennsylvania Stage
We are very happy to have at the Festival this year, the Japanese stand-up
comedienne Kaori! She s a veteran of both the Tokyo and New York comedy
club scenes and can make you laugh in two languages!
Le Siana

Le Siana is a Japanese girl group from Nara City who are making the
Sakura Matsuri their US debut performance! Come see these energetic
girls sing and dance and you will fall in love with them as Japan has!
Tamagawa University Dance and Taiko Group
2:15-3:00 at Pennsylvania Stage
It is our annual honor to welcome Tamagawa University Dance and
Taiko Group to the Sakura Matsuri. Their thundering taiko drumming is
a perennial favorite! Enjoy the new performances of drummers and
dancers from Tamagawa University, one of the top-ranking taiko
groups in Japan .

Chef Hironobu Higashijima is a Japanese chef working at Perrys Restaurant
here in Washington, DC. He will demonstrate a recipe from Cookpad on stage;
the recipe will be available afterwards on Cookpad the website that has
translated Japanese recipes into English. www.en.cookpad.com

With special thanks to NHK World, we are pleased to present Chef
Tatsuo Saito, star of the cooking show Dining with the Chef ! At the
Culinary Arts Pavilion he will demonstrate how dashi (soup stock) is
used in Japanese food and how it is the foundation for many washoku
dishes (Japanese cooking).

Anime USA, a local anime convention taking place in the fall, displays Japanese Anime
inspired costumes to teach about Anime and cosplay culture.
■The Asterplace
J-Pop Stage
Entertainment rock show with solid J-Rock. The Asterplace will cover some of your
favorite anime songs.

Chin Hamaya promotes 'Peace through understanding each other's cultures.' As the
Ryukyu spirit fills you, enjoy the beat of the taiko drums, the elegance of Eisa music, the
excitement of the shisa dance, as well as some modern surprises along the way!

J-Pop Stage
A Japanese DJ who specializes in Electro-House/Techno Pop including J-pop and
Anime tracks. His works have landed him DJ sets at various Anime conventions in DC,
Baltimore and NYC. He will spin Anime/J-pop tracks from classics to current hits.
■Frances Nakachi Ryubu Dojo
Sakura Stage
Come and enjoy the traditional and newly choreographed Okinawan dances. Feel the
strong energy and faith in life and celebrate for their rich culture in Okinawan music
and art.
■Hitomi & Rainbow Bubble
Sakura Stage
J-Pop Stage
Hitomi & Rainbow Bubble sing and dance some of Hitomi Himekawa's original songs
‒ with some members doing solo performances!
■2014 Japan Bowl
J-Pop Stage
The National Japan Bowl® is a Japanese language and culture competition for
American high school students. Competitors join students from Keio Academy of NY to
dance to the hit song, "Koi suru Fortune Cookie."
■Keisho Center - Songs of Japan
Sakura Stage
Washington Japanese Heritage Center will sing songs of Japan from the 8th to 21st
centuries to celebrate this occasion. Songs help children form linguistic foundations,
and develop a will become lifetime cultural and nostalgic asset.
■Kizuna - Taiko Trio

ANA Pennsylvania Stage
Kizuna, a DC-based taiko trio, presents their own vision of Japanese drumming,
combining traditional elements with modern rhythms and sensibilities. Kizuna is
Paul Bodnar, Kristen Koyama and Mark H Rooney.
■Nen Daiko
Sakura Stage
Enjoy a mix of traditional festival songs as well as more contemporary
compositions that use taiko, fue (bamboo flute), and other narimono (percussion
instruments).
■Okinawan Taiko Drummers of Wisconsin
Sakura Stage
This group of high school students from Madison, Wisconsin will perform both
modern and traditional Okinawan Taiko Drumming. They have performed at Sakura
Matsuri for 10 years.
■The Shizumi Kodomo Dance Troupe
ANA Pennsylvania Stage
The Shizumi Kodomo Dance Troupe dances to the traditional Sakura song and
modern variations that celebrate the arrival of spring. Other songs reference young
rabbits, butterflies, harbingers of spring.
■Shodo (Calligraphy) Performance (Near Let s Learn Japanese Tent)

A team of students from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
(TJHSST) perform calligraphy on a giantsheet of paper (9 x16 ft) with dance and music.
■Tamagusuku-ryu Shosetsu-kai & Shosetsu Michiko no Kai
Sakura Stage
Okinawa, the southernmost prefecture of Japan, is an island with wonderful and rich
culture. Performances include a classical court, traditional folk, and lively children's
dance (warabincha).
■UMCP JASA
Sakura Stage
Japanese American Student Association at UMCP will perform and discuss the Soran
Bushi, traditional Hokkaido fishermen dance.
■UZUHI
J-Pop Stage
A Japanese punk rock group from New York City bring their energetic, happy show
back to the Festival!
■Washington D.C. Kimono Club / Atelier Kanawa
Sakura Stage
Come and enjoy a kimono fashion show / dressing demonstration which offers many
types of kimono for different occasions, young to adult.
■Washington Toho Koto Society
ANA Pennsylvania Stage
■The World of Okinawa Sanshin
ANA Pennsylvania Stage
The Washington Toho Koto Society performs a variety of folk music, ancient songs and
children s music on the Koto (a 13-stringed instrument in the zither family).
This group performs traditional classical and folk music and dance from the Okinawa
Prefecture of Japan. Musical instruments include the Sanshin, Taiko Drums, and Samba.
■Yamatai

There's nothing like the raw energy of Japanese taiko drums!
If you've never experienced this sonic sensation, prepare to be blown away!
■Yosakoi Dance
J-Pop Stage
The students of State University of NY at Geneseo present an exciting Yosakoi dance
performance.
■Yosakoi Dance Project - 10tecomai
ANA Pennsylvania Stage
J-Pop Stage
Now in their 10th year, 'Yosakoi Dance project - 10tecomai' continues their ongoing
goal of showing the uplifting, energetic Japanese dance style of Yosakoi to audiences
all over the United States.
■Aikido of Arlington
Martial Arts Stage on 12th Street

Demonstration of a variety of techniques, including what to do to gain control if being
attacked. They will also show weapons (jos / bokkens) and open handed techniques.
■Capital Area Budokai
This group will highlight various aspects of Naginata practices including basic and
advanced forms as well as sparring in Bogu (protective body armor).
■Capital Area Jodokai
The Capital Area Jodokai will show a 400-year-old art, Shindo Muso Ryu Jo, which
illustrates the use of a staff versus Japanese sword. They will also demonstrate affiliated
arts showcasing jutte, kusarigama, tanjo and sword.
■Classical Japanese Martial Arts
Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Heiho (swordsman and variety of other martial disciplines); Jiki
Shinkage Ryu Kenjutsu (swordsmanship);Shindo Muso Ryu Jojutsu(feudal period police
staff and sword arts).
■Heaven and Earth Aikido
They will demonstrate traditional Aikido martial arts. It will involve, multiple attackers
attacking the instructor and a weapons demonstration by the group.
■Hobyokan - Demonstration of Classical Japanese Martial Arts
Demonstrating the following classical Japanese martial schools: Yagyu Shinkage Ryu
heiho (swordsman and a variety of other martial disciplines); Jiki Shinkage Ryu Kenjutsu
(swordsmanship); Shindo Muso Ryu Jojutsu (feudal period police staff and sword arts).
■KenKonKai Dojo - Japanese Sword Martial Arts
A demonstration of Japanese sword kata and cutting form Nakamura Ryu Batto Do and
Mugai Ryu Iaihyodo.
■Students of NoVA Traditional Okinawan Isshinryu Karate Club
Students will demonstrate traditional Okinawan Karate-Do, including kihon (basic sets),
kata (defensive sets), kobudo (use of traditional Okinawan farm implements for selfdefense), kumite (two person practice) and tameshiwari (testing effectiveness on solid
objects).
■Sugawara Sogo Budo Katori Shinto Ryu
Katori Shinto Ryu teachers licensed by Sugawara Sensei perform a demonstration of
traditional Japanese weapon arts, including the sword, short sword, staff, spear, and
naginata.
■Ten Shin Ichi Ryu
This is a traditional and peaceful Japanese martial art. TSIR founder, Shiro Shintaku, will
demonstrate Japanese sword and other traditional weapons along with several TSIR
students. Children will demonstrate their karate skills.
■Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu
Beginning with solo sword-drawing forms, the group will demonstrate prearranged
sword, staff, naginata, and spear forms.
■Tenshinsho Jigen Ryu Hyouho Keishokai
Tenshinsho Jigenryu Hyouho was initiated about a thousand years ago and it is one of
the oldest martial arts in Japan. It is a school of martial arts, teaching arts such as Japanese sword fighting, Iai-jutsu, Jujitsu, spear and Nagamaki. Headquarters are in
Kasukabe, Japan with branches in MD, VA, WV and Florida.
■Traditional Japanese Ninpo
The systems of Ninpo (Ninjutsu), Jujutsu, Ko Ryu Karate will be demonstrated, as well as
traditional Japanese weapons like Katana, Bo, Yari, Naginata, Kusari.
■Virginia Kyudo Renmei

demonstrating the individual and group dynamics which kyudo demands of its J-Pop Stage
practitioners.
