Sexism on the slopes: Women in Action Snow Sports
Women in freestyle skiing and other extreme snow sports have
been in the shadows and are just now starting to emerge from
a niche culture dominated by men. Take the Sochi Olympics as
a prime example. Jen Hudak, a favorite for the gold in halfpipe, was disregarded as an athlete and treated purely as an
object. Freeskier Magazine published an article called “10
hottest female skiers” rather than focusing on the
impressive feats of female athletes.
“You definitely see objectification of women
in the action sports industry.”--Jen Hudak

95% of the

Ski Jumping in the olympics didn’t exist for women until sochi Olympics (2014)
Gian Franco Casper, President of the international ski federation said that ski jumping for women
“seems not to be appropriate for ladies from a medical point of view.”
Canadian Slopestyle ski coach Cusson said “if all the girls did it, if they all hit the smaller jump, the
problem would be solved.”
The real problem? Women KNoW they can hit the larger jumps

LGBT Niche Culture
General Information About Women In LGBT Culture
Many women in the LGBT community not only face discrimination for their sex but also their sexual or gender
identity. People of color also face more discrimination on top of this because of their race.
Although we have role models like ellen page, jazz jennings, laverne cox, and samira wiley there is still a lack of activism
in the area of rights for women of color and trans-women.
General LGBT+ Information
Not all identities are stated, there are a plethora of LGBT+ identities that exist
LGBTQIA+ is an acronym for the people who fall within categories including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and asexual
people. There are also other identities that do not fall within the categories listed, which is why the + is included.
There are also different forms of attraction including: physical, romantic, sexual and emotional which vary between identities.

Sexism in technical Theatre
“I feel like this issue is the constant struggle of women
working in the industry. We face double standards and catch
22s a lot. You are told that in order to get any respect you
must be able to do exactly the same amount of work as your
male counterparts, but at the same time you should accept
help when offered by a ‘gentleman’ and know your limits. You
are told to speak up for yourself and assert your skills and
your rights but speak up too much and people will get
frustrated at that woman who cries sexism.”

Driving a large van to a venue for load in and being laughed out when you
get out because they weren’t expecting “that” to be driving
Someone forcibly grabbing something out of your hands and saying “you
shouldn’t be carrying that”
Somebody finding out that you are the other flyman and shouting “You? Oh
for fuck’s sake”
A co-worker commenting on how nice your ass looks in your work clothes
After a fuck up with a cue, hearing someone say “that stupid bitch doesn't
know what the fuck she’s doing”
People telling you how “tough” you are
Having to sit there while someone explains how to do something you do every
day
Hearing “why don’t you let a man do that? I don’t want you to get hurt”
Being told you’re bossy, fiery, stubborn
Being sent to clean when everyone else is building a set
Everyone automatically assuming that you’re a lesbian
“Unlike a man [a woman] is never simply and gloriously a musician.
She is a ‘female guitar player’ or ‘a female drummer’. Her gender
precedes her.”
Women In The Music Industry
Young women in the music industry, especially in genres such as
Alternative and Punk Rock are rarely looked at as a positive influence
or important figures.
Aside from being a vicious cycle of objectivity and exploitation, the
music industry has had its fair share of discrimination against women
musicians. It's been a common occurrence in modern day music to drop
labels and start independant promotion and production due to the
constant abuse and ill-treatment of these such record labels.
The problem is, Susan B. Anthony forever changed the world for women.
but what makes woman musicians so important is their relevance today
in our ever changing society and the ability for music to unite people as
well as serve as an art form that everyone can relate with/inspire.
There are countless Living examples of this but rarely do WOMEN win this fight because it’s always so easy to dismiss her case…
So you haven't heard of any case like this? Probably because in many instances the individual is only able to break free by
quitting music due to the previous obligations labels have with staying faithful to the company.
An example is Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls, who fought for almost 4 years to be released from her contract with
Roadrunner Records
This company had stopped helping Amanda and The Dresden Dolls with all promotion, tours, and recording completely after
their second album was released. Progressively and continuously treating them poorly with every confrontation leading
her to call it quits with RR Records. If you are unfamiliar with The Dolls to make a point, another popular recent example
would be KE$HA, who underwent an extreme lawsuit in order to be freed from her abusive producer.
