Joe Kuether Takes

When some people goof, they get egg

it, it’s an entire omelet.
Last issue I reported on the
winner of Harrah’s Rincon
main event, but somehow
substituted results from
the 2011 event, instead of
this year’s tournament. But
we’ll get it right, even if we
have to do it twice.
Although we were late
in reporting these results,
main event winner, Joe
Kuether, was late to the
dance too, arriving at the

of the first session, he was

well on his way to his biggest live tournament cash.
During the seven-hour
final table battle, Kuether, a

The main event attracted
332 entries, and was played
over three consecutive days.
About half of the field was
eliminated during Day One.
Day Two whittled the field

POKER NEWS
By Haley Hintze
NEW JERSEY ONLINE-POKER BILL
CLEARS COMMITTEE
A reworked online-poker bill is back on the
legislative agenda for New Jersey politicians,
and the latest edition recently cleared New Jersey’s Senate
Budget and Appropriations Committee by a 12-0 vote. The bill
joins numerous measures up for general budget debate, and
will face votes before New Jersey’s full House and Senate
before moving on to a possible signing by Gov. Chris Christie,
who vetoed an earlier measure. The latest bill is sponsored
by state Senators Raymond Lesniak and James Whelan, who
fronted earlier attempts to expand gambling in the state.
THIRTY CONFIRMED FOR WSOP’S BIG ONE FOR
ONEDROP
With over two months’ lead time remaining, WSOP officials
announced that 30 players had committed the $1,111,111 buy-in
for this July’s special “Big One for OneDrop” charity event
at the Rio. The tournament highlights billionaire poker-player
Guy Laliberte’s clean-water philanthropic efforts. With thirty
confirmed entrants, the event will now produce the richestever winner’s prize of at least $12.2 million, topping Jamie
Gold’s 2006 WSOP $12.0 million payday. A first prize exceeding $18 million will be paid if the tournament’s 48-player cap
is reached.
$7.8 MILLION IN EPIC POKER TOUR LIABILITIES
New court documents have revealed that Federated Sports &
Gaming, parent company of the Epic Poker League, amassed
more than $7.8 million in liabilities over 14 months of operations. FS&G filed for bankruptcy protection after a major
investor pulled out, and indefinitely postponed its fourth
event, along with a much-publicized million-dollar freeroll
for member players. The filings also show that FS&G garnered only $37,000 in revenue on its own, not counting funds
siphoned from the Heartland Poker Tour, which it acquired in
2011. Palms Casino parent Pinnacle heads a long list of creditors, and has a $2 million lien against FS&G.
VANDERSMISSEN TAKES IRISH POKER OPEN
An international field, 502 players strong, arrived in Dublin
for the 2012 edition of the Irish Poker Open, with Belgium’s
Kevin Vandersmissen notching a breakout €420,000 (about
US $533,300) win. Vandersmissen topped Germany’s Thomas
Beer in a brief heads-up duel after Britain’s David Dean was
bounced in third. Beer collected about $296,400, and Dean
$208,000. Jordan Lewis was the highest-finishing American,
in sixth for $77,700, with Ireland’s own Andy Black, a 2005
WSOP main event finalist, finishing eighth for $43,100.
SEIVER WINS PREMIERE LEAGUE POKER V
April’s Party Poker Premiere League V drew 16 elite poker
stars to London, England’s Playboy Club, with Scott Seiver
working his way through four qualifying heats and an eightplayer finale, to win $500,000 and top honors. Seiver, and
eventual runner-up Daniel “Jungleman12” Cates, dominated
the finale, with Cates’ deep run worth $300,000. Phil Laak
finished third for $175,000, while Patrik Antonius exited in
fourth, winning $125,000.
ROCK GAMING PURCHASES PIECE OF CAESARS
INTERACTIVE
Caesers Entertainment’s online subsidiary, Caesars Interactive
Entertainment, sold a $61 million slice of its action to Detroitbased Rock Gaming LLC, a brick-and-mortar startup that’s
gained a toehold in several urban Midwestern casinos. The
move continues the pre-market jostling as Nevada prepares
to open its regulated online-gaming market. Rock Gaming’s
most visible face is former NBA star Brad Gilbert, who, with a
small group of investors, has quickly assembled a consortium
of nearly 40 companies, including interests as diverse as
Quicken Loans and the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers franchise.
Rock and Caesars are already collaborating on a new $400
million Horseshoe casino in downtown Cincinnati.
Veteran poker-industry writer/editor Haley Hintze is the author
of an upcoming book on the Absolute Poker and UltimateBet
online cheating scandals, to be released later this year.

“Modern.”
Now we continue the
review (today’s word) in this
series of self-interviews…
Question 1: You teach
the art of illusion in poker.
What’s that about?
Simple. In poker, a key
mission is to keep opponents
from knowing what your
cards are. So you need to
create illusions to confuse
them. Almost all poker players do this, some ostentatiously, some in subtle ways.
The more skillful you are
at creating poker illusions,
the more money you make.
Question 2: I get it.
If all players showed
their cards face up on
the table, including you,
nobody would be confused.
Illusion wouldn’t be a factor. Everyone would know
what to do and would play
the same way, right?
Not exactly.
Players would know what
each other’s hands were,
but some of them would be
confused about how to play.
And almost all opponents
would occasionally make
mistakes, leading up to the
final showdown, which
would be an irrelevant
betting stage, because the
winner already would be
certain.
You could still win if all
cards were exposed. But
you’re right in saying that
the value of creating illusions would be pretty much
absent from the game.
Question 3: What’s the
most profitable illusion to
create?
There’s no question that
the most profitable poker
illusion is to appear loose.
You also can play loose to a
point, not just appear loose,
but the degree depends on
the structure of the game.
A good guideline for
players without a lot of
experience is to play 10
to 50 percent fewer hands
than your opponents. The
high end of that scale (50
percent) would be very rare.
Usually, you want to be as
selective as possible about
the hands you play without appearing tight. So it’s
whatever tightness you can
get away with and not be
discovered.
Here’s the deal. There’s
nothing in poker theory to
suggest that tighter play
wins money. In fact, there’s
a perfect balance of hands
you should play—the prof-

itable ones—that dictates
correct strategy. You’ll lose
against skillful opponents if
you play either too loose or
too tight.
So why am I saying you
should play too tight? I’m
not. I’m saying tight, but
not too tight. You should
play all profitable hands.
You need to realize that your
opponents, on average, play
way too loose. They barge
into pots with unprofitable
hands. This is their greatest
weakness. So you want to
take advantage.
And the path to taking
advantage is simply to play
fewer hands than they do.
That way, all the excess
hands they play that you
don’t are unprofitable for
them. Unprofitable means
they lose money. You don’t.
And that lost money goes
somewhere—eventually to
you.
But this trick will only
return huge profit if you create the illusion that you’re
playing looser than you
really are. I’m often perceived as being the loosest
and most reckless player at
the table, when I’m actually
the tightest!
I do this by laughing
and having fun, by playing
some extraordinarily weak
hands that stick in opponents’ minds, and by talking
in convincing ways about
phantom hands I actually
didn’t play. Those phantom hands become real in
opponents minds, because
they’ve seen for themselves
how strangely I’ve played
recently.
The fact that I’ve only
chosen a couple hands for
strategic advertising seems
to elude them. Many times,
other players will talk about
bizarre hands they’ve seen
me play in other games,
acting as free advertising
agents on my behalf.
The main factor that
makes this illusion work is
my friendly and sometimes
silly demeanor. The trick is
to never make opponents
feel they’re being conned.
If necessary, I’ll take
the opposite approach and
say, “I’m not as loose as
everyone says.” It’s hard for
opponents to feel they’re
being conned if you’re telling them you’re not loose.
Yet, it’s the “everyone says”
part that sticks in their mind.

The Tilt Factor
LOU KRIEGER ON POKER
By Lou Krieger©
The tilt factor is critically important to
poker players, and how you deal with it
can make the difference between being a lifelong winner,
or a loser for life.
Most players have gone on tilt at one time or another
in a poker game. Some tilt frequently, some seldom,
while others claim to have a zero tilt factor—though I’m
not sure that’s really true. What’s more important is a
player’s ability to recognize tilt when it happens, and
then do something about it.
Because of the short term luck factor in poker, it’s
easy for players to become frustrated and go on tilt.
But don’t dismay. If you find yourself going on tilt more
than you’d like to, you can put a stop to it. Tilt mitigation
can be a major shot in the arm in raising your game to
another, higher level, and your results will show all the
better for it.
All it takes is a willingness to be accountable for your
emotions at the poker table, along with the will power
to recognize when you’re staring tilt in the face and take
appropriate action.
The easiest way to avoid tilt is to get up from the
table when you suffer a bad beat and feel your emotions
beginning to go out of kilter. Just get up, take a short
walk around the casino until you feel more in control of
yourself, and then return to the table. That’s all there is
to it, and the return on this short investment of time can
be astonishing.
In fact, you ought to make a point of taking a walk
every hour or so, just to review the game in your mind. A
new perspective, away from the immediacy of the table,
may be all it takes to avoid going on tilt.
If this advice sounds simplistic, it is. But it works. Tilt
is a serious affliction for poker players. For some, tilt
has ended otherwise promising careers. The poker world
is full of otherwise top notch players—even some WSOP
main event champs, who were not able to control their
emotions at the table—and many big-money winners who
have gone completely broke, due to an inability and an
unwillingness to deal with being on tilt. In other words,
the willingness and commitment to get up from the table
when stressed, and to take a short walk every hour
or so, has cost some players millions—everything they
earned and every dollar they had—while a simplistic little
remedy might have prevented it all.
When bad beats bedevil you at the poker table, you
need a short memory. Put the last hand out of your
mind and go on to the next one. If you find yourself still
replaying the previous hand in your mind, it’s a sure sign
that it’s time to get up and go for a walk.
The takeaway from this column is that you have it
completely within your power to control your tilt factor
at the poker table. Beating tilt does not depend on the
turn of a card, on what your opponent does or doesn’t
do, or on anything else outside of yourself. When it
comes to managing tilt, you are the one in charge. If you
are unable to deal with it, the fault is entirely yours.
But if you succeed in managing and mitigating tilt, the
victory is all yours too. Not only can you do your victory
dance if you are able to beat down all those negative
emotions that cause tilting at the poker table, you’ll usually be able to do that dance with a lot more chips than
you would have had if you allowed yourself to succumb
to the self-pity and self-destruction that tilt causes.
So the next time something gets under your skin at
the poker table, think about taking a short walk. Then
take it.

Poker is getting positive press from the mainstream media for the
first time in nearly a year, thanks to the opening of a new documentary titled All In: The Poker Movie. Glowing reviews of the
film, directed by Douglas Tirola and produced by 4th Row Films,
have been hitting the intertubes since the film’s limited release
this past March.
All In is a survey course about poker, focusing on its rising popularity over the last two centuries. Tirola chronicles poker’s highwatermark, and its glorious boom, fueled by Chris Moneymaker’s
stunning victory at the 2003 World Series of Poker’s Main Event.
Unfortunately, the film also covers the eventual downfall of the
online poker industry, when the Department of Justice shut down
major online sites on April 15, 2011, which has been dubbed “Black
Friday” in the poker community.
Poker, as the film argues, is as synonymous with America as
baseball and apple pie. Even though the average person’s poker
experiences are rooted in low-stakes kitchen games, Hollywood
glamorizes the game’s outlaw nature. Since the inception of silent
movies, poker has been a game played by renegades cavorting
with scoundrels, outlaws, and derelicts. That’s a powerful stigma
to overcome, and it’s been a perpetual black cloud hanging over
poker, and often used by political opponents of online poker to
push forward their “family values” agenda.
For me, watching the film was like taking a walk down memory
lane by reliving the halcyon days of the poker boom. Hardcore
fans will have similar nostalgic feelings, but at the same time,
poker junkies might not enjoy the film because it is not specific
enough. If I had one gripe, it’s that the film barely scratched the
surface of many intriguing side notes, like cheating scandals and
the monumental role of television, in poker’s rising popularity.
The story about how Chris Moneymaker became a household
name is woven through the film in a series of candid interviews.
A slew of familiar pros were also interviewed, including Phil
Hellmuth, Annie Duke, Howard Lederer, Daniel Negreanu, and Greg
Raymer.
Rounders co-writer, Brian Koppleman, gave some insight into
the illegal card rooms in New York City, including the Mayfair
Club, where many of poker’s biggest stars cut their teeth in
poker, backgammon, and chess.
In addition, the film included non-poker star power, featuring
interviews with actor and Oscar winner, Matt Damon, and musician, Kenny Rogers.
Production of All In began in 2009, and Black Friday occurred
during the last stages of filming, so the director and producers wanted to include as much pertinent information on Black
Friday as possible. A few of the interviewees pointed fingers at
land-based casinos as corporations that would benefit the most
financially. However, the film never delved any deeper into those
allegations. Then again, this is a general film about poker, not
one specifically about Black Friday. Someday, I hope an ambitious
filmmaker uncovers the real reasons why online poker prohibition
came to fruition.
I would have preferred the film to have included interviews
with politicians and lobbyists that were both anti-online gaming
and pro-poker. The UIGEA was tacked onto the Port Security Act
without any public debate, so I felt it was important to include
commentary from the initial principals involved—Congressmen Jim
Leach and Robert Goodlatte, and Senators Jon Kyl and Bill Frist.
All In: The Poker Movie gives its viewers a glimpse of the
eclectic, yet misunderstood world of poker. It’s not quite as
glamorous as depicted, but more importantly, it’s not as menacing as the government thinks. Hopefully this documentary will
help shatter any preconceived notions about the poker world and
clear up misconceptions about the moral ambiguities of a thriving
international industry.

players remaining. In spite
of losing his massive chip
lead, he went on to beat
WSOP circuit champion,
Charles “Woody” Moore,
heads-up.
“I made a couple pretty
big mistakes,” Stanko
said, after the tournament. “You can never play
perfect. What’s beautiful
about winning is I can
learn from that stuff.”
Stanko is 33 years old,
and just recently dedicated
himself to playing poker
full-time. Prior to his
new profession, he lived
in Wyoming and worked
as a cowboy for the family business. After riding
horseback for eight to
ten hours a day became
stale, he earned a law
degree at the University of
Michigan, and practiced
law in Chicago. When that
got boring he became a
stock trader.
After basically every
venture became monotonous and unfulfilling for
one reason or another,
Stanko turned to the one
constant in his life—poker.
Stanko delivered
the final blow, holding
As-9d versus the Kh-8s
of Moore. The 8h on the
flop gave Moore the lead,
but only temporarily. The
Ac on the turn put Stanko
well ahead, and Moore
would never catch up.
Charles “Woody” Moore
finished as the runner-up
and earned $62,584. With
more than $400,000 in
career earnings, Moore
marked his 15th career
cash. He has now recorded
first, second, and third
place finishes at the
WSOP.

How to Get (and Not Give)
Information at the Table
BY Shari Geller
How many times have you thought that
this game would be a lot easier if you knew
what your opponent had? But without flashing his cards or
wearing reflective lenses, it’s not likely to happen. If you
pay close attention, you can pick up information about the
strength of your opponent’s hand, however, and learn how
the flop affected him, as well as how committed he is to
his hand.
It’s been said many times before—Texas hold’em is a
game of incomplete information, and picking up information from your opponents while giving away as little about
your own hand as possible is crucial. Your goal should be
to be deduce your opponent’s hand—or a range of hands
he could be playing—while keeping him guessing about
yours.
Three keys to accomplishing this include considering
their playing style, their position, and their chip stack. It
doesn’t take long to determine what kind of player you’re
facing. You can quickly figure out if it’s a tight player who
is likely only to play premium starting hands, or a loose
player who will take a chance on any two cards.
Look at their chip stack, and notice what’s happened to
them during the last few hands they’ve played. Do they
seem to be on a roll, sitting pretty on a big stack of chips?
Or has a recent hand set them on tilt? If you’re in a tournament and approaching the bubble, is your opponent at
risk of busting? Or is it near the rebuy cutoff time, when
they may be more likely to put their chips at risk with a
questionable hand?
Every wagering round offers an opportunity to gain
more information about your opponent, so don’t waste
those opportunities. In order to put your opponent to the
test, be aggressive with your betting. If you just check or
flat call their action, what have you learned about their
hand? By leading out or raising, you are forcing them to
make a decision that gives you more information than you
previously had.
While you are trying to gather information about your
opponent, they are doing the same with you. The less
information they have about you, the worse their decisions are likely to be. To give no information, or to offer
up convincing but misleading information, requires paying
attention to your own tells, betting patterns, and routines.
Vary your betting, hand selection, and other aspects of
your play so you reveal little information about your hand.
If you don’t play the same two cards the same way every
time, it is harder for your opponent to get a read on you.
Be unpredictable. Don’t raise the same amount every time,
don’t always make a continuation bet or raise the button.
Play Q-8o now and then. Shake things up.
You can also keep your opponents off-balance if you
do the same thing every time—pause the same number
of seconds, hold your hands in the same position, say the
same thing—no matter what you have. So be consistent in
how you toss in your chips, announce your bet, and how
quickly or slowly you act.
Since the key in every hand is to gather more information than you reveal, there is one more factor to consider
when playing: your position. The later you can act on each
wagering round, the more information you will have before
you have to decide what to do. So play only the strongest
hands in early position. But the closer you are to the button, the more flexibly you can play, because you will possess more information before it is your turn to act.
It may not be as effective as playing with marked cards,
but if you follow this advice it can be almost as useful.

WSOP Circuit Event at Harrahs St. Louis
five wins. The future favors
players like Cartwright and
Masek, who are both in their
mid-20s, and may very well
obliterate all WSOP circuit
records if they remain loyal
to the tournament trail.
A.P. Phahurat, a 22-yearold poker pro from Tulsa,
OK, was the runner up.
The Thailand-born pro now
has nine cashes and four
final table appearances this
season. Second place paid
$34,324 in prize money.

Poker is a game of tough decisions. At their
core, most of them can be boiled down to
one cosmic proposition: Should you play it safe, or should
you take a risk for the opportunity of making a greater
profit? Figuring out when that extra risk is worth taking, or
whether discretion is the better part of poker’s valor, is one
of the great challenges of the game. A good example that
illustrates this concept is the thin value bet.
While technically this bet can take place on any street,
generally speaking, a thin value bet is made on the river
when your final hand is rather lightweight—perhaps a hand
like middle pair. It’s far from the nuts, not strong enough to
be bet with any real confidence, and yet it’s not completely
worthless either.
This is the kind of hand that a player usually likes to
check down and see a cheap showdown. That’s the easy
and safe thing to do.
But for players who want to push every advantage,
exploit every edge, and who don’t mind risking a few extra
chips now and then, there is value to be mined from those
middling hands—as long as you know when, where, and
against whom to apply the pressure.
As usual, the key lies in knowing your opponents. More
specifically, you must be able to put your opponent on a
range of hands with some degree of accuracy. Next, you
must be able to guesstimate how often said opponent will
call down your less-than-stellar hand with an even worse
hand of his own.
For example, you have A-8 suited in the cutoff, and when
the river card is dealt, the community board reads 5-8-JK-3 of mixed suits. On the flop, it was checked to you, you
fired out a bet, and everybody dropped except for the big
blind. On the turn, it was checked around, and it’s been
checked to you again on the river. Unless you have a decent
read on your opponent, any bet you make here is just a
wild-ass guess. Thinking about the texture of the board,
the betting action, and the playing style of this particular
adversary: What are the chances that your river bet would
be called by a worse hand?
If your opponent was calling with 9-10 he’s certainly not
going to pay you off now, though he may try a check-raise
bluff. However, if you have reason to believe this opponent
would call with dreck—a worse eight, a pair of fives, a lowly
pair of treys, or perhaps even a lowlier ace-high—that could
tip the scale in favor of pushing out a thin value bet.
What could cause an otherwise thinking opponent to call
off his chips with sub-par slop? In a nutshell: because he
suspects a bluff. The more aggressive your table image,
the greater the likelihood that some weary-of-beingsteamrolled opponent will decide to play sheriff, expecting
to snap off your bluff with his bottom pair. Or maybe the
player on the other side of the table is not a thinking opponent after all, but a call-happy blockhead who always has
to make sure. Either way, a thin value bet starts to look a
lot more valuable in those kinds of circumstances.
Along with a reliable read of your opponents, a good
awareness of your own table image is critical for thin value
bets to be successful. But even when executed flawlessly,
thin value bets are not very lucrative in the long run. That’s
what makes them thin. Middling hands are, after all, quite
vulnerable, and they’re just not going to make a lot of
profit over the long haul. But done right, with a strong base
of knowledge so that the additional risk is calculated as
opposed to being foolhardy, thin value bets can be an effective way to elevate your game.

weak players are winning is,
in itself, an illusion. You’re
being deceived. Yes, there’s
usually a poorly skilled
player winning at your table.
But guess what? If you follow that player around from
game to game, it’s unlikely
