On May 5th-9th, seven of our members will be going to Boston, Massachusetts, for the National BPA convention. We recently finished selling Butter Braids, which was a great success. We also decided to try a new fundraiser this year: a “Get Your Glow On” dance, on April 16th. It was a lot of fun, and we want to thank everyone who came and supported our chapter. On May 13th, we’ll hold our annual Talent Night, and we will gladly take any performers. Contact Mrs. Wacker if you’d like to sign up. We’ll have a lot of great talent as well as some delicious desserts. We will have a barbeque before the Spring Concert on May 16th as well. One of our favorite fundraisers is Cow Pie BINGO! It will cost $20 for one ticket, and the money earned will go to the national qualifiers. The winner will receive $500! We’ll be selling tickets soon. Cow Pie BINGO will be on May 23rd in conjunction with the activities banquet. It’s definitely been a great year, and we have much more to come. The teams and individuals competed and did very well. Megan Brewer got 2 ndplace in Star Green Hand, also she took 2 nd in Creed Speaking. The horse judging team took 11th. Kaylee, Rebecca, and Xavier all received state degrees. We had two people run for a state office; Rebecca and Xavier had a lot of fun but were not rewarded with a state office. The end of the school year will bring new officers for the FFA chapter for next year. The interviews will be held Monday, May 2nd. The new officers will be installed at the activities banquet which will be held on May 23 rd. The year end awards will also be given that night. Thank you for the year round support of the FFA. They started the day by visiting the research labs. Professor Phillips showed the class the items they research and the processes of being involved with student researchers. The class then learned about an arthritic horse skeleton and saw it assembled. After that, the class went to the Bozeman Agricultural Research and Teaching (BART) Farm to study a cannulated cow. Each one of them got the opportunity to stick a hand into the hole in the side of the cow to feel what is in the rumen. The hole in the side of the cow benefits researchers, enabling them to study the contents of the rumen. Next our Vet Science class toured a part of a research lab where they learned new ways to boil a skeleton. They also saw the vet students working on dissecting half of a horse head. We thanked all the professors for the time they took out of their day to teach us the importance of a college education. They came from Billings West to Melstone due to personal reasons, and they are planning on staying with us next year. Right now, TyLee and TyRaa are living with their aunt and uncle, Art and Yvonne Kincheloe. They have more siblings, but they came alone. They are currently the high school track managers. The sports they are interested in are basketball, volleyball and track. So far, they love their new lives here in Melstone, and they really appreciate its supportive community. Thanks to all who gave them a warm welcome. Hope you will enjoy your time here ! Preparation Combine egg and buttermilk; set aside. Combine 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, cornmeal, 1 teaspoon salt, and pepper in a shallow bowl or pan. Dredge tomato slices on remaining 1/4 cup flour; dip in egg mixture, and dredge in cornmeal mixture. Pour oil to a depth of 1/4 to 1/2 inch in a large cast-iron skillet; heat to 375 degrees. Drop tomatoes, in batches, into hot oil, and cook 2 minutes on each side or until golden. Drain on paper towels or a rack. Sprinkle hot tomatoes with salt. TyLee Left and TyRaa Right 6 Running Again By Sofia Uruena High School On their first track meet of the year, the Snowflake in Columbus, the high school track team did pretty well. After practicing for two weeks and coming from Bozeman from participating in the FFA State Convention, we were really excited to demonstrate our talent to everybody. Some of us did not get to go because they had to compete in some contests. Even with that, we had a lot of fun. BreElle and Sofia are running long distance. Nora is competing in jumping and sprinting events. Xavier, Rebecca and Lera are involved in throwing events. Riley and Harry are sprinters, and Brody does hurdles, long jump, triple jump and some throwing events. The second track meet was held in Billings West on the same day as prom. All of us competed but Brody, who had a rodeo. Some of us set some Personal Records. BreElle could not do better finishing 1st in 800m, 1 mile and 2 mile. Sofia also placed in two events and Xavier got 5 th place in shot put and javelin. The 3rd meet was in Lewistown on Tuesday April 12 th. Brody did well in his first meet placing in three different events. Our second time in Columbus, despite the bad weather (really windy and even snowing at times), we did well. Harry placed for his first time in 400m dash, and BreElle only ran one race because she was supposed to run the next day at the West meet. However, because of an unstoppable cough, she was not able to. Furthermore, we were supposed to have a track meet on April 19th in Billings, but that same day it was postponed because of the weather conditions. Junior High has had two meets so far: one in Columbus and the other one in Harlo. Several placed and set some PR’s. Furthermore, TyLee and Tyraa have become our managers. Congrats! Keep it up guys! Doing great! (See pictures, next page). Xavier said, “I had a great time being a part of the Southern C team.” On his team were Ty Stanton, Kelly Murnion, Josh Wilson, Tucker Wilson, Kenton Stradinger, Scott Bymaster, Lane Stickel, Lando Stewart, and Zac Gierke. The first game they won against South A with a score of 61 to 70. The second game was lost to North B, 56 to 101. The third game was lost to Central A with the score of 102 to 94. Even though they won only one game, Xavier said, “It was a great experience playing basketball with seniors from different schools.” This year one student, Brody Grebe, competed at the Highline Invitational Tournament in Havre. Brody said, “I had a great time playing in the HIT Tournament.” There were nine people on his team with Brody being the only one from our district. It was 3-0 pool play, and they lost in the championship to AA. Brody also said, “It was a great turn out, and you have to play the best to be the best!” By Renee Parsons By Renee Parsons Spring Concert May 16th 6:30 p.m. BPA Dinner 5:30 p.m. Adults $7 Senior Citizens $6 Students 7-12 $6 Students K-6 $5 Preschool $4 Concert Featuring Concert Band Community Ensemble 5th and 6th Grade Band 3rd and 4th Recorders Choral Performances K-6th Musical: “We the People” Easter Classic By Rebecca Turley The high school girls’ basketball team made the long journey to Reedpoint on March 25th for the Easter Classic basketball tournament. We had almost 40 kids come out in cold weather and pick up eggs and get some prizes and candy. We filled 750 eggs for the hunt this year and had over 55 prizes per age group. This event would not be possible if it was not for the following people that helped and donated to it. Rich and I would like to give Great Big THANK YOU to them! We hope everyone had a nice Easter/vacation and we look forward to next year!!!
