'%%.6ccjVaGZedgi Dear Friends d[i]ZBjhiVgYHZZY;djcYVi^dc! =dlh]Vaa lZe^XijgZ i]Z`^c\Ydb d[<dY4 A year ago we celebrated Mustard Seed Foundation’s 25th birthday. At our March annual meeting in South Carolina, we laughed and cried and remembered God’s faithfulness through good times and bad. We celebrated the incredible journey God has given us as we steward His resources. >i^ha^`ZV bjhiVgYhZZY Mark 4:30-32 The Mustard Seed Foundation is a Christian family foundation Along with millions of people and organizations around the established in 1983 under the leadership of Dennis W. Bakke and globe, the start of 2009 brought with it significant financial Eileen Harvey Bakke. The Foundation was created as an expression of uncertainties for our family foundation. Thankfully, Mustard their desire to be faithful stewards of the financial resources entrusted Seed was able to continue granting in the midst of a global to them, to bring together the members of their extended families recession. The Foundation’s total giving for the year was into common ministry, and to advance the Kingdom of God. The $5 million, a slight increase from our giving in 2008. Foundation provides grants to churches and Christian organizations worldwide that are undertaking new ministry projects including Local church granting remains at the core of Mustard Seed outreach, discipleship, and economic empowerment. The Foundation giving, with about 50% of our operating funds given as grants also awards scholarships to Christians pursuing advanced educational to match local churches. We awarded 715 grants totaling $3.1 degrees in preparation for leadership roles in both the Church and million to churches in 77 countries to support their outreach society. The Foundation affirms the Lausanne Covenant as its missional and growth. Members of our gifted staff and dedicated commitment to the world. All directors and staff of the Mustard Seed volunteer board devote much skill and wisdom to develop Foundation are committed followers of Jesus Christ. these international, grassroots grants and to discern feasible projects and appropriate grant amounts. By matching the investment of local churches in discipleship, empowerment, and outreach ministries, we believe that our “mustard seed” grants are appropriately scaled, that accountability remains with the local church, and that projects have a greater likelihood of being sustainable long after the Mustard Seed funds are spent. continued on next page lll#bh[Yc#dg\q& Our Harvey Fellows Program, in its 17th year, financially assists talented graduate students who are followers of Christ and who are preparing to enter vocations where Christians are under-represented. Last year the Foundation awarded nearly $1 million to 85 scholars pursuing graduate degrees at top-tier universities. We want to thank Todd Pearson, who ended his term on the Board in 2009, for his astute assessment of our grants. Todd has a heart for nations and people groups that are closed to the gospel, and we will miss his contributions to our Board discussions. We welcome Lowell Bakke’s return to the Board for a five-year term. One of our newest initiatives, Theology of Work (TOW) grants, received strong reviews from the dozens of seminaries worldwide where the TOW courses are being taught. Theology of Work courses are designed to help Christian pastors and lay leaders understand and teach the sacred nature of all believers’ work. We are grateful for Lowell Bakke’s role in overseeing and championing this program. We awarded $294,357 through 36 grants to seminaries to develop and teach TOW courses. The Mustard Seed Junior Board, comprised of members of the Harvey and Bakke families age 13-18, awarded 12 grants totaling $94,600 in 2009. Dargan Thompson, who chaired the Junior Board, graduated and was succeeded by co-chairs Whit Harvey and Norris Laffitte. Dargan, thank you for your capable leadership last year, and for the ways you mentored the younger Junior Board members. In 2008 and 2009 we significantly reduced the Theological Education funds spent on scholarships to international seminaries, granting $300,000 to support 374 students at 46 institutions in 2009. We are planning to continue this smaller, more targeted scholarship program for seminary students in the years ahead. Mustard Seed also has established a scholarship program for students attending Bakke Graduate University (BGU) in Seattle; 87 BGU graduate students received financial aid from MSF in 2009 totaling $300,000. The day-to-day work of the Foundation is carried out by a team of 11 staff members who are located in seven countries around the globe. This small, effective team serves as ambassadors for Christ as well as ambassadors for the Mustard Seed Foundation, encouraging the witness of the local church as they identify worthwhile grant and scholarship opportunities. We are so grateful for each member of the staff and commend them for the amazing work they do. 'qlll#bh[Yc#dg\ Guiding Principles Mustard Seed Foundation has a long history, for which we are grateful. We find that each year brings new opportunities to witness God’s gracious activity in the world and to partner globally with dear brothers and sisters in Christ. Each year also brings challenges, endings, and opportunities to be on our knees in prayer. We wait expectantly to see what God will do with this family, the relationships, and the Foundation funds in the year ahead. In Christ, Dennis and Eileen Bakke 8]g^hiVcY=^h@^c\Ydb The gospel of Jesus Christ and the advancement of his Kingdom are central to all that we are and all that we do. It is our joy to worship and serve Jesus and to submit ourselves to the authority of the Bible. We seek to be Christ’s servants and ambassadors and to encourage as many as will come to follow Christ. We seek to encourage the formation of disciples from every community, city, and culture. We desire to see the whole Church bring the whole gospel to the whole world. Therefore, we award grants and scholarships to churches and individuals representing the spectrum of biblical Christianity, including Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, and Evangelical traditions. We affirm God’s redeeming and restorative grace and power as sufficient to bring blessing to all structures, institutions, and societies. All grant and scholarship recipients of the Mustard Seed Foundation must proclaim a personal faith in Christ, affirm the basic tenets of orthodox Christianity, and desire to serve and witness in Christ’s name. <adWVa The Mustard Seed Foundation recognizes the global nature of the Body of Christ. Therefore, we desire to participate in God’s work to encourage churches and individuals through grants and scholarships around the world. Our goal is to give the majority of our funding to churches and individuals worldwide, while intentionally limiting our investment in the United States. Since the Foundation’s inception in 1983, we have awarded grants and scholarships in nearly 150 countries. AdXVa8]jgX] We recognize the Church as God’s primary representative in the world. Therefore, we try to maximize the role and responsibility of local congregations in the initiatives we support. We seek to partner with and empower local congregations lll#bh[Yc#dg\q( 2009 Overview 2009 began with a slow start due to the continued global recession but ended with increased giving over 2008. The Foundation’s expenditures totaled $5.9 million in 2009. Approximately 85 percent of these funds were given through over 750 grants to churches and Christian organizations, and nearly 550 scholarships to individuals. The remaining 14.9 percent, or $885,131, was used to administer this work through an international team of 11 staff located in seven countries around the globe. The remainder of the Foundation’s giving was channeled through a collection of other giving programs. The Harvey Fellows Program grew significantly in 2009 due to the selection of 18 new fellows and restructuring of payments to more closely follow most academic calendars. Our Theological Education scholarships increased slightly over 2008 in continued support of students pursuing theological degrees where the Church continues to experience the greatest growth globally. Our scholarships to graduate students at Bakke Graduate University also increased in 2009 as the school continues to grow and expand the diversity of degrees offered. Our Theology of Work grant program remained at a consistent level of funding from the previous year while broadening the geographic regions of granting. Together these initiatives represent over 30 percent, or $1,888,857, of our 2009 expenditures. Providing seed funding for small startup projects of churches and Christian organizations around the world remains the primary giving area of the Foundation. Over 53 percent, or $3,155,752, of total operating expenditures was given through grants primarily to local churches in major urban centers worldwide. There was noteworthy decline in our average grant award to approximately $4,400 from our historical average of around $5,000. '%%.:meZcY^ijgZh to identify, equip, and support their members who are called to specific areas of ministry in the Church, marketplace, and the world. We also consider local church support and accountability as primary indicators of the priority, integrity, and sustainability of any potential grant or scholarship initiative. >cY^k^YjVah>c8dbbjc^in We believe that God endows individuals with the passions and gifts needed to further the work of his Kingdom. We believe that God desires those whom he calls and equips to be both nurtured by and held accountable to the local body of Christ. It is our belief that individuals are strongest and most able to fulfill their callings )qlll#bh[Yc#dg\ when they are integral members of a local church. Thus, in all our giving we seek to support individuals who are active members of a church community. The power of individuals to be agents of grace and change in community is exemplified in history. We therefore seek opportunities to empower individuals who are clearly affirmed and supported by their local church to use their unique gifts to fulfill their callings. HbVaa7Z\^cc^c\h The biblical parable of the mustard seed reminds us that great things often have small beginnings. Through abiding in Christ and following him our seemingly small efforts possess power beyond imagination. This parable exhorts us to respond faithfully to God’s calling but to trust outcomes to him. In our giving we seek to trust individuals and churches as they listen to God by taking small steps toward their visions. Therefore, our grants are available to churches, including those that may be poor, powerless, or unproven. We recognize that results cannot be guaranteed and that big results often have risky beginnings. We choose to specialize in small, start-up initiatives, trusting that what is sown in faith will return abundantly. <gVcih =VgkZn;Zaadlh I]Zdad\^XVa:YjXVi^dc 7<JHX]daVgh]^eh I]Zdad\nd[Ldg` 6Yb^c^higVi^dc (!&**!,*' ..)!*%% (%%!%%% (%%!%%% '.)!(*, --*!&(& 6Yb^c^higVi^dc &)#. We seek to partner with local congregations that identify, equip, and support their members who are called to specific areas of ministry in the Church and society. We look for initiatives that offer innovative approaches to church-based ministries. Mustard Seed seeks to help launch projects through its grants as a minority partner, providing funds over a limited time period, and in a way that encourages self-sufficiency and reliance on the local church. We consider local church accountability and financial support primary indicators of the priority and integrity of a particular project and key to its long-term sustainability. All of the funds given as grants are matched by funds from local churches connected to the projects. The Foundation recognizes the unique challenges and opportunities faced by urban churches. As the world rapidly urbanizes, we believe that investing in churches located in large cities to be particularly strategic. Therefore, the Foundation awards most grants in the largest urban centers of the world. -qlll#bh[Yc#dg\ Africa Addis Hiwet International Church Addis Ababa, ETHIOPIA $2,000 Calvary Charismatic Center Nairobi, KENYA $2,500 Darajani Baptist Church Nairobi, KENYA $750 Africa Outreach Ministries Johannesburg, SOUTH AFRICA $4,000 Calvary Worship Center - Ruai Nairobi, KENYA $2,000 Daystar University Nairobi, Kenya $11,850 Amazing Grace Church Kampala, UGANDA $3,000 Capital Christian Center Tswane (Pretoria), SOUTH AFRICA $2,000 Dignified Youth Development Mission Ibadan, NIGERIA $4,000 Amazing Grace Ministries Benin City, NIGERIA $3,000 Cathedral of Praise International Ministries Mombasa, KENYA $4,000 Apostle Development Unity Fellowship Center Nairobi, KENYA $1,400 Christ Our Hope Ministries Lagos, NIGERIA $5,000 Dominion Anointing Sanctuary - Mikindani Mombasa, KENYA $3,000 Apostolic Ministers Support Network International Lagos, NIGERIA $7,000 Assemblies of Sons of God Port Harcourt, NIGERIA $4,000 Balanced Christian Life Revival Mission Abuja, NIGERIA $2,000 Banda Zion Church Kampala, UGANDA $2,000 Believers In Jesus Christ Ministry Nairobi, KENYA $1,500 (2 grants) Christ Our King Cape Town, SOUTH AFRICA $3,000 Christ the Answer Ministry Abuja, NIGERIA $2,000 (2 grants) Christ the Savior Church Lagos, NIGERIA $3,000 Christian Covenant Church Lilongwe, MALAWI $1,000 Christian Family Fellowship Church Nairobi, KENYA $2,000 Christian Foundation Fellowship Nairobi, KENYA $750 Mustard Seed awards grants to a wide variety of projects. Bakke was a second generation Norwegian immigrant to the United States who lived and worked in the Pacific Northwest, Colorado and Alaska. He also participated in a trip to the Holy Land that profoundly influenced his faith. We highlight a project from these regions in honor of him. The goal of the program is to mark, equip, and encourage followers of Jesus Christ who seek to actively integrate their faith and vocations as leaders in strategic occupations where Christians appear to be underrepresented. This idea grew from our understanding of God as Creator and Redeemer, not only of human beings, but also of society’s disciplines and structures. Our desire is to identify, prepare, and celebrate this generation’s Josephs, Lydias, Daniels, and Esthers — Christians who will assume positions of leadership and influence in society. The Harvey Fellowship is a stipend of $16,000 that may be renewed for up to two additional years. The competitive award is given to outstanding students enrolled at premier graduate degree programs. Harvey Fellows typically attend schools considered by professionals to be among the top five globally in a given subject area or specialty. A significant component of the program is participation in a weeklong summer program that provides a forum for discussion on integrating faith and vocation. The Summer Institute is a place for Fellows to meet and build relationships with others with similar visions. The Foundation believes this occasion is vital for the marking and equipping of Fellows. While there was no Summer Institute held in 2009, one will be held in Washington, DC in 2010. In 2009 the Foundation invested $994,500 in support of 85 graduate students preparing to enter strategic ministry in academia, the arts, and the marketplace. We were privileged to award 18 new fellowships to an extraordinary group of graduate students representing a variety of nationalities and preparing for vocations in diverse fields. Scholarships are awarded for up to half of the total cost of education. Qualifying students must be attending a participating institution and receiving a significant level of financial support from their home church or Christian organization. Recipients must be pursuing degrees that equip them for service to the Church in the areas of preaching, teaching, missions, or evangelism. However, priority is given to those who are being trained to directly minister in a church congregation or preparing for ministry in urban areas. The scholarships are administered in direct collaboration with participating institutions that are biblically orthodox, interdenominational and strategic. In 2009 we invested a total of $300,000 to 374 students to enable them to continue their education at 46 institutions around the world. While this amount is more than awarded in 2008, it continued to be much less than in previous years in large part due to a decrease in the Foundation’s overall giving. However, Mustard Seed remains committed to encouraging global theological education through scholarships to promising seminarians. 2009 Participating Institutions African Bible College Lilongwe, MALAWI $1,000 (6 students) Donetsk Christian University Donetsk, UKRAINE $1,000 (1 student) Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary Windhoek, NAMIBIA $1,600 (4 students) Alliance Graduate School Manila, PHILIPPINES $5,284 (4 students) Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology Addis Ababa, ETHIOPIA $2,000 (3 students) Near East School of Theology Beirut, LEBANON $17,529 (5 students) Arab Baptist Theological Seminary Beirut, LEBANON $9,922 (3 students) Evangelical School of Theology Wroclaw, POLAND $2,200 (6 students) Novi Sad Theological College Novi Sad, SERBIA $2,600 (5 students) Asian Theological Seminary Manila, PHILIPPINES $20,332 (10 students) Evangelical Theological Seminary Cairo, EGYPT $16,800 (13 students) Nusantara Bible Seminary Malang, INDONESIA $6,814 (14 students) Bangkok Bible Seminary Bangkok, THAILAND $5,737 (10 students) Evangelical Theological Seminary of Indonesia Yogjakarta, INDONESIA $2,250 (1 student) Pastor’s Theological Seminary Rio de Janeiro, BRAZIL $2,650 (5 students) Baptist Advanced School of Theology of West Africa Lome, TOGO $1,933 (3 students) Bethel Evangelical Seminary Sao Paulo, BRAZIL $3,184 (6 students) Bethlehem Bible College Jerusalem, ISRAEL $8,750 (7 students) Biblical Seminary of Colombia Medellin, COLOMBIA $7,428 (15 students) Biblical Seminary of the Philippines Manila, PHILIPPINES $9,500 (6 students) Buenos Aires Bible Institute Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA $3,419 (7 students) Bulgarian Evangelical Theological Institute Sofia, BULGARIA $2,000 (2 students) Carlile College Center for Urban Mission Nairobi, KENYA $3,700 (13 students) Center for Pastoral Ministry and Mission Curitiba, BRAZIL $3,000 (7 students) Christ Bible Seminary Nagoya, JAPAN $4,000 (1 student) Christian Alliance Evangelical Faculty of Theology Abidjan, COTE D’IVOIRE $640 (1 student) College of Christian Theology Bangladesh Dhaka, BANGLADESH $6,411 (12 students) (%qlll#bh[Yc#dg\ Latin American Faculty of Theological Education Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA $8,025 (9 students) Institute for Urban Ministry Pretoria, SOUTH AFRICA $3,700 (8 students) International Graduate School of Leadership Manila, PHILIPPINES $14,879 (10 students) Jordan Evangelical Theological Seminary Amman, JORDAN $9,124 (2 students) Kampala Evangelical School of Theology Kampala, UGANDA $1,000 (2 students) Latin American Theological Alliance CHILE, ECUADOR, BOLIVIA, ARGENTINA $3,719 (26 students) Latin American Faculty of Integral Theology Sao Paulo, BRAZIL $3,600 (3 students) PRODOLA San Jose, COSTA RICA $7,200 (5 students) Servant of Christ Theological Seminary Sao Paulo, BRAZIL $3,775 (9 students) Singapore Bible College SINGAPORE $22,131 (12 students) St. Petersburg Christian University St. Petersburg, RUSSIA $2,757 (6 students) Theological Missions Seminary Banska Bystrica, SLOVAKIA $1,500 (15 students) Trinity Theological College SINGAPORE $36,950 (12 students) Ukrainian Evangelical Theological Seminary Kiev, UKRAINE $3,700 (10 students) Union Biblical Seminary Pune, INDIA $18,217 (31 students) Lithuania Christian College Klaipeda, LITHUANIA $1,000 (1 student) Minsk Theological Seminary Minsk, BELARUS $1,670 (7 students) Myanmar Evangelical Graduate School of Theology Yangon, MYANMAR $1,750 (5 students) Myanmar Institute of Theology Yangon, MYANMAR $3,620 (31 students) lll#bh[Yc#dg\q(& 7<J HX]daVgh]^eh 2009 Raymond J. These scholarships focus on encouraging ministry practitioners to obtain advanced degrees to deepen the theological basis of their work and ministry. Most of those supported are pursuing the Doctorate of Ministry (DMin) degree in Transformational Leadership for the Global City that is offered through BGU on a non-residential, modular basis. The Foundation also supported a handful of students pursuing a Master of Theological Studies (MTS), Master of Arts of Social and Civic Entrepreneurship (MASCE) or a Master of Business Administration (MBA). Scholarships are awarded in honor of Dr. Raymond J. Bakke, Dr. Lowell Bakke, Mrs. Marilyn Bakke Pearson and Mr. Dennis W. Bakke who have contributed significantly to the ministry of the Mustard Seed Foundation and formation of Bakke Graduate University. In 2009 we were pleased to award scholarships through BGU for the advanced studies of 87 ministry practitioners totaling $300,000. The aim of this special grant initiative is to enable theological institutions and training organizations worldwide to instruct seminarians, pastors, and educators in a biblical basis of a theology of work. This theological understanding empowers ordinary people to infuse their Christian faith in the institutions, structures, and industries in which they work throughout the week. It is our desire to see those trained through our grants begin teaching and modeling this theological concept in their own churches and ministries. Theology of Work grants are awarded to theological institutions, both formal and non-formal, to create and offer courses that teach students a theology of work to enable them to teach others. The institutions are encouraged to integrate this theology into their core curriculum to continue to teach the course after the grant-funded classes are completed. The TOW grants program is administered by BGU, which fosters a network of people and resources specializing in developing and teaching curriculum for theology of work. In 2009 we awarded 36 grants totaling $294,357 to seminaries and ministries worldwide in hopes that through them churches will teach and encourage their congregants to actively minister through their work.
