Funds Two New
Educational Foundation
Scholarships
The Trustees of the Pi Lambda Phi
Educational Foundation are pleased to
announce two new scholarships, which have
been funded by Brother George A. Beck,
H.B., ‘43 VA Omega Alpha, University of
Virginia.
Since his initiation, and through the many
years he served as Executive Secretary,
Executive Director, and Executive Vice
President of Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity, and
now as a Trustee of the Educational
Foundation, George has generously donated
his time, money and efforts towards helping
both our Fraternity and Educational
Foundation reach its many goals. George,
through his personal donations to the George
Beck and Dorothy Beck Educational Fund,
will fund these two new scholarships, with the
hope of helping yet another Pi Lam reach his
own personal aspirations.
The Dorothy Beck VA Omega Alpha
Scholarship will be awarded, annually, to one
exceptionally qualified brother of the VA
Omega Alpha chapter.
The $2,500
scholarship award is restricted to brothers of
this chapter who are actively attending the
University of Virginia. Award monies will be
applied to the recipient’s outstanding
academic expenses at the University. The first
of these scholarships has been awarded for the
spring 2007 semester (see page 3 for article on
2007 Scholarship Recipients).
Annually, beginning with the 2007-2008
academic year, The George A. Beck, H.B.
Scholarship, will be made available to
brothers of all chapters of our Fraternity who
are actively studying at a college or university.
Each year, one $2,500 scholarship will be
awarded to an outstanding student, who
exceeds the personal and academic
qualifications required as an applicant.
The Board of Trustees of the Educational
Foundation, as well as the International
Executive Council of Pi Lambda Phi
Fraternity, extends sincere thanks to George
for his continuous service. Brother George

Educational Foundation
Elects Three New Members to
Board of Trustees
In 2006, the Trustees of the Educational
Foundation elected three new members to its
Board of Trustees.
There are now eight
members overseeing the educational, training
and scholarship programs instituted on behalf of
our undergraduate brothers. These brothers
volunteer their time on behalf of the Foundation,
and they offer a wealth of professional and
personal experience needed to organize and
maintain current programs and to help direct the
efforts of the Foundation towards reaching its
future goals.
Bill Chorba
‘92 OH Beta Tau
Baldwin-Wallace College
Bill joins the Foundation as the first of the
newly elected Trustees. A graduate of BaldwinWallace College with a BA in Business
Administration/Accounting, he is now a CPA
and Chief Financial Officer for CPI, an
employee benefits, payroll, and human resource
firm, in Ohio. Bill has held positions at other
major financial and risk management giants such
as Marsh & McLennan. He is a member of the
Accountancy Board of Ohio, the American
Institute of Certified Public Accounts and the
Ohio Society of Certified Public Accounts.
Additionally, Bill is affiliated with the
Cleveland Cleveland Bridge Builders, an
Alumnus of Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership
Society, and a cabinet member of
GeneratioNext (United Way).
Besides
volunteering his efforts toward the work of the
Educational Foundation, Bill participates in
events for Junior Achievement, United Way,
the Leukemia Society, and the American
Cancer Society. In his spare time, Bill enjoys
weightlifting, motorcycles, home remodeling
and anything automotive. Along with his
wife, Belinda, and stepsons, Jared and Jason,
Bill resides in Elyria, Ohio

Past President, IEC
Ron was elected a Trustee of the Pi Lambda
Phi Educational Foundation in 2006, having
served as President, Treasurer, and Vice
Present of the Fraternity’s International
Executive Council. Ron began his career in Pi
Lambda Phi in 1958, when he was initiated
into the PA Omega Kappa Chapter at
Washington & Jefferson College. He was
elected Rex of his chapter in 1960, and
became the first Pi Lam on campus to hold the
position of President of the Inter-Fraternity
Council.

Once again we are pleased to share with you news and information about your Fraternity and
Educational Foundation.
This publication is possible because of the generous support of Pi Lam brothers, who have
contributed to the Pi Lambda Phi Educational Foundation in 2006. This past year, over 830 alumni
brothers have supported the work of the Foundation, a 12% increase over the previous year! Their
donations are greatly appreciated and we proudly list their names beginning on page 4. Additionally,
beginning on page 8, the Foundation is pleased to recognize 653 brothers, celebrating a milestone
anniversary of 75, 50, or 25 years since their initiation into Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity.
The purpose of the Pi Lambda Phi Educational Foundation is to support the educational and
scholarship efforts of our Fraternity. This past year, the Foundation has increased its support of the
Fraternity and expanded the number of scholarships awarded to individual undergraduate brothers.
The Foundation also strives to judicially mange overhead costs associated with running a modern
Foundation. This publication was created “in-house,” by the Foundation Administrator, Denise
Avanzato, with additional articles and content contributed by Fraternity brothers. Denise is the only
paid employee of the Foundation, working on a part-time basis. All Trustees are volunteers who pay
their own expenses to attend meetings with other brothers, such as George Bruckman, who provides
legal advice and support.
This year, the Foundation hopes to continue making forward strides by expanding scholarship
opportunities for undergraduate brothers. It is also hoped to continue assisting the Fraternity in its
effort to provide the valuable and critical financial support necessary for educational programs offered
to the chapters. Fraternity educational efforts targeted to risk management, chapter leadership training,
substance abuse, prejudice, etc., help our brothers develop strong chapters and, most importantly,
establish essential character traits necessary to compete on campus and after graduation.
Thanks for a terrific 2006, and we all look forward to another great year in the history of Pi
Lambda Phi Fraternity!

Pittsburgh to Host 2007 Convention
The Pi Lambda Phi Convention Committee has selected Pittsburgh to host this year’s 112th
Annual Leadership Convention. Pittsburgh is central to many of our chapters and it offers a great
summer location with many activities for both undergraduate and alumni attendees. The Fraternity,
with the aid of the Educational Foundation, is focused on providing training and educating members,
who subscribe to our principles and values of tolerance and a better understanding ‘twixt men. As
plans progress, further information regarding Convention 2007 will be provided on the Fraternity
website at www.pilambdaphi.org.
The International Executive Council, through the support of the Educational Foundation, has been
developing and testing programming for the leaders of today. These programs facilitate the growth of
our members. Your donations to the Educational Foundation help fund the leadership, educational and
training programs offered to our undergraduate leaders.

Scholarships
The Pi Lambda Phi Educational Foundation,
through the generosity of alumni who have
contributed to the 2006 Annual Alumni Donation
Program, has awarded three scholarships for the
spring 2007 semester. The following undergraduate
brothers have received $2,500 each, payable toward
their academic expenses at their respective
universities.
On behalf of these brothers, the Educational
Foundation extends sincere gratitude to its
alumni…for it is through your support that this
scholarship program is again possible. Providing this
program, and the many other programs that have
been offered through the Foundation, is vital to the
personal and academic development of our
undergraduate brotherhood!
Ian Scott Lowe
‘07 OH Beta Tau
Baldwin-Wallace College
Ian is a senior attending Baldwin-Wallace College,
majoring in History and Secondary Education. He is
a resident of McDonald, PA, and was initiated a
member of the OH Beta Tau chapter in 2005. Ian has
held chapter positions as Rex, New Member Class
President, Fundraising Director, Recruitment
Director, and Recruitment Director Advisor, and has
served on the Standards (Judicial) Board.
Additionally he was honored as Greek Outstanding
New Member of the Year (2005).
With a cumulative GPA of 3.36, Ian has
deservingly made the Dean’s List in fall 2005 and
spring 2006, and has been honored by Omicron Delta
Kappa and the Order of Omega.
Since 2004, Brother Lowe has served the U.S. Air
Force Reserves as a Senior Airman, and has been
promoted twice to advancing levels of leadership.
In is “spare” time, Ian has been extensively
involved in both campus and community
organizations including, but not limited to, Office of
Community Outreach, Alumni Student Ambassadors,
Emerging Leaders, Sophomore Class Treasurer,
Residence Life Staff, Teaching Together, Students
for a Free Tibet, Toastmasters International, and the
World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh.
In his future, Ian sees plans to continue serving
our country as a commissioned officer of the U.S. Air
Force, and hopes to some day have the opportunity to
join the Peace Corp or some equivalent human
services group. Educating and mentoring is also an
aspiration, as he would eventually like to teach and
later shift to the administration level within the
educational system.
Michael E. Jankosky
‘07, OH Beta Tau
Baldwin-Wallace College
Aspiring to a career in the performing arts,
namely opera, Michael is pursuing a BA Music
(voice) at Baldwin-Wallace.
Furthering his
education after graduation in 2007, he plans to
acquire an MA Music, and dedicate himself to
bringing the performing arts to deficient regions in
our country.
Michael was initiated into OH Beta Tau in 2006.
In addition to his educational diligence - consistently
maintaining his status on the Dean List with a
cumulative GPA of 3.85 - he has actively contributed
to his chapter as a Fundraising Committee Leader,
organizing and executing more fundraising and
philanthropic events for chapter operations and dues
payments than in any other period in the chapter’s
revitalization. Additionally, he is a BW Resident
Assistant and a Certified Peer Educator.
Extracurricular activities are many, for Michael, as
he is a member of the BW Opera, BW Theater,
College Choir, and holds an esteemed position in the
choir of St. John’s Cathedral, in downtown
Cleveland.
Michael enjoys racquetball, in-line
skating , baseball, frisbee and skateboarding.
Through his experiences as a member of Pi
Lambda Phi, Michael feels he has gained the
leadership skills necessary to organize his arts
advocacy plans and advance his exposure and
connections on campus. Not only has he become
more connected with the campus as a mover, he has
learned to connect with other men in a profound
manner, establishing bonds of true honor and trust.
Michael Steiner
‘08 OH Beta Tau
Baldwin-Wallace College
Majoring in Public Relations, Michael (Mick) is
a junior at BW, and has been elected Rex this past
February. He has held the positions of Scribe,
Communications Committee Advisor, Public
Relations Chair, and a member of the Recruitment
Committee for the OH Beta Tau chapter. Mick is a
resident of North Olmsted, Ohio.
Initiated in spring, 2005, Mick has received
multiple honors and awards, which include a BW
Dean’s Scholarship, Alpha Lambda First-year
Honorary, Laurels Honor Society Deans List…and
Greek God candidate 2006.
Additional to his academic dedication, Mick is a
former president of Habitat for Humanity, currently
on its building committee, has served on the
Sponsorship Committee for Dance Marathon (funds
raised for St. Jude’s Research Hospital), has lent a
hand for Saturday of Service, and is an Alumni
Ambassador, a Student Activities Assistant, and a
former Resident Assistant.
Post graduation, Mick plans to either attend
graduate school to study Student Affairs and plans a
career in Higher Education Personnel or Public
Relations. This coming summer, he will complete
one of two internships at Cedar Point Amusement
Park or in the BW Office of College Relations to
further solidify his career goals.
As the new Rex of the Oh Beta Tau, Mick plans to
continue to uphold his chapter’s highest standards of
service, study, and social responsibility…and to bring
the chapter to a stable 50 members. He plans to lead
his chapter in efforts to combat and balance the
equilibrium of work and play, and to restore the
leadership and gentlemanly qualities of its members,
necessary to represent Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity.

Dorothy Beck VA Omega Alpha
Scholarship
Through the generosity of Brother George A.
Beck, H.B., ‘43 VA Omega Alpha, the University of
Virginia, and in honor of his deceased first wife,
Dorothy, a restricted scholarship fund has been
instituted for brothers in good standing of the VA
Omega Alpha Chapter currently attending the
University.
Brother Beck offers this $2,500
scholarship annually to one outstanding brother, with
the hope of helping him reach his personal goals.
This year, the flagship year for this scholarship,
the outstanding recipient is:
Christopher Wenzel
‘07 VA Omega Alpha
The University of Virginia
Christopher was initiated a
Brother of the VA Omega Alpha
Chapter in fall 2003. He is a
senior, majoring in Mechanical
Engineering and Government,
and is active in the Naval ROTC.
Not only is Christopher dedicated to his studies,
upholding a current cumulative GPA of 3.18, he has
been actively involved in his work as a Pi Lam,
having held the positions of Rex, New Member
Educator, Assistant NM Education and held a seat on
the Standards Board. Academically, and within the
ROTC program, Christopher has received honors and
awards as Midshipmen of the fall 2003 Semester, Pi
Tau Sigma International Mechanical Engineering
Honor Society, and the Order of the Omega.
Recently, Christopher was selected to the Navy’s
flight training program and will spend the better part
of the next two years rotating through various
training commands to become a naval aviator. He
aspires to become an F/A-18 Hornet pilot and
committing to serving the Navy for eight years. At
some future point, he would like to teach high school
history or government and coach baseball and
basketball.
As a Pi Lam, Christopher has contributed to and
seen the results of upholding standards of conduct
and the positive effects and value of initiative and
personal responsibility.

111 Anniversary Leadership Convention 2006

In August 2006, The University of Cincinnati welcomed more
than 80 undergraduate and alumni Pi Lams from across the US and
Canada for the Fraternity’s 111th annual convention.
Andy Golbert, ‘65 PA Sigma, Lafayette, organized a tremendous
event. Convention is the opportunity for our undergraduates to realize
our brotherhood reaches beyond the towns of their university. The
attendees spent four days participating in sessions that enhanced their
brotherhood experiences.
Our education was focused on the needs of our chapters. Shawn
Upchurch, ‘94 OH Beta Tau at Baldwin-Wallace College, a
professional recruiter, provided an intensive recruitment seminar that
was recorded and distributed to the chapters. Throughout the three
days of sessions delegates gained education to improve themselves and
their chapters. Each delegate participated in sessions regarding new
member programs, finances, alumni relations, risk management,
leadership, and philanthropy. Delegates were able to share ideas and
practices which improve our Fraternity.
We were honored to have Harrison Dillard, ‘49 OH Beta Tau,
deliver the keynote speech. Brother Dillard gave an inspirational talk
about his struggles to win the 100-meter hurdles Olympic Gold medal
in 1948 London. Dillard’s colorful language took us from him as a
young boy idolizing Jesse Owens to a photo finish win of his own –

Three New Foundation Trustees

At the 1960 PLP Annual convention, he
was elected undergraduate Chairman. In
1965, Ron earned his medical degree from
The University of Pittsburgh and, upon
completing his residency in 1970, he entered
private practice in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
In 1995, Ron earned his masters degree in
American Studies from Pen State University
and taught U.S. American History at
Harrisburg Community College.
Retired in 1999, Ron lives in Naples,
Florida with his lovely wife, Parker. They
have three grown children, one of whom is a
Pi Lam at Penn State.
George A. Beck, H.B.
‘43 VA Omega Alpha
University of Virginia
Executive Director Emeritus
George was initiated a Pilam in 1940,
as a member of the VA Omega Alpha
Chapter at the University of Virginia. He
served his chapter as house manager, KOE
and Rex and was involved in both the
purchase and furnishings of the Pi Lam
Hillel House and the current Fraternity
House at 504 Rugby Road. In 1966, he
became Executive Secretary of the
International Fraternity and, after 26 years of
service, was honored with the position of
Executive Director Emeritus. George
received PiLam’s highest award, the
Diamond Council Key. He is a recipient of
Theta Chi’s Chapman Alter Award for
Inter-fraternal Excellence, and proudly
wears the North-American Inter-fraternity
Conference’s gold medal, the NIC’s highest
award. He continues to serve as a Director
of the NIC’s Inter-fraternity Foundation.
Furthering his service to Pi Lambda Phi
Fraternity, George has personally funded a
restricted scholarship fund, under the
guidance of the Educational Foundation,
which offers annual scholarships to the VA
Omega Alpha Chapter, as well as the general
undergraduate membership of Pi Lambda
Phi Fraternity.
As a Foundation Trustee, George’s
volunteer efforts will concentrate on the
major donor membership of the Fraternity’s
alumni donor program.
George and his wife, Barrie, enjoy their
days in both Pennsylvania and Florida, and
share the pleasures of their 6 children and 7
grandchildren.

attendees were fortunate to share the rest of the evening with Brother Dillard.
The delegates were given an opportunity to participate in an International
Executive Council and elect a representative to the Council. This year
we welcomed two members to the Council, Jeff Buhler, ‘93 FL Delta, and
Shawn Upchurch, ‘94 OH Beta Tau. The Council elected Daniel P. Scott, ‘89
IL Tau Delta, as the new President of our Fraternity. Brother Scott succeeds
Dr. Ronald M. Grossman, C.K., ‘61 PA Omega Kappa.
All attendees departed from Cincinnati with a renewed sense of
brotherhood and an international perspective of Pi Lambda Phi.

A full life's worth of
big-hearted giving

People usually have only nice
things to say about the departed –
some of which might even be
true – but with Kelly Silverstein
people always had only nice
things to say about him.
He really was just the greatest
guy. Always there for kids – any
kid, not simply his own two
boys. He was the fundraiser you
could count on. And a coach for
eight teams spread through four
different sports.
He was the brother who
rescued his fraternity when it
teetered on bankruptcy. The
volunteer who always raised the
most money every year at Big
Brothers and Big Sisters Bowl
for Kids Sake. The parent who
donated the Raptors tickets that
pushed the bidding over the top
at the school auction. The Dad
who slipped the school principal
a cheque for sports camp for an
underprivileged
student
he
thought particularly talented.
So when Silverstein died Nov.
20 at age 42 just four days after
he was diagnosed with leukemia,
there was a shocked silence
throughout
his
Hillcrest
community.
And people wept when they
heard. There was standing room
only at Holy Blossom Temple –
more than 1,200 people attended.
The line snaked around the
corner, and the service was 25
minutes late starting.
"You
could feel it," said Rabbi John
Moscowitz. "There was a sense
the very best one of us had just
died."
Silverstein's friends and family
– wife Jill, sons Oliver and Jonah
– were there, as were his
fraternity brothers, his work
colleagues, the teachers from the
schools where he coached, kids
from the teams he coached, but
also the guy who worked in the
underground parking lot in the
building that housed his office.
He was that kind of guy.
"He was a stand-up kind of
guy," said Terry Karis, his barber
at the Forest Hill Barber Shop.
The two talked about more than
the weather when Silverstein
came in for his camouflage cut –
short on sides, long on top – to
hide the hair thinning on top.
In the fall of 2005, Silverstein
invited Karis to a hockey oldtimers function.
"My son Adam was on the ice
with Guy Lafleur. How good is
that?" said Karis. It got better,
though. Karis had forgotten his
camera and just as he and his son
were about to leave, Silverstein
hauled them over to Lafleur and
took their picture together.
"He
found
a
camera
somewhere, somehow, because
he knew I was a Montreal fan.
And he wasn't even one. He put
it in a frame and gave it to me. I
treasure that picture," said Karis.
"He
was
goodness
personified,"
said
Michael
Kalles, a fraternity brother. "He
gave his all to everything. He
wasn't a guy who asked you to
lift a heavy piano and he carried
the piano bench. He'd be carrying
15 pianos." When they were
students at the University of
Western Ontario together, it was
Silverstein who started Pi
Lambda Phi fraternity.
First they met in a bedroom,
then Silverstein got the idea they
should rent a house; then he
decided they should buy one –
which they did, choice real estate
at the corner of Cheapside and
Richmond Sts. – because he
raised a ton of money.
He started a chapter at the
University of Windsor as well.
"Kelly did all the heavy
lifting,"
Kalles
said.
He
mobilized them to raise the
$10,000 they needed to retain
their charter when their chapter
got in financial trouble.
"He would say that we have to
ensure that the frat would be
around when our kids wanted to
join." He was always doing it
for kids.
"He really was as fine a
person as you would ever meet,"
said John Hunter, principal of
Hillcrest public school, where
the Silverstein sons had attended
and their father coached.
He started the basketball team
there – for five years he called
practices for 7:30 a.m. before he
went to work. There was an offer
on the table for him to come
back and coach again this winter.
"He was so kind to the kids.
He had a lot of trouble cutting
them (from the team)," Hunter
said.
For four years he coached two
hockey teams in the North
Toronto house league. For even
longer he also coached two
soccer teams, as well as baseball
and basketball teams. Basketball
was his favourite sport, possibly
because he was six-foot-four.
He'd take his teams out for
chicken wings; he'd sweep his
sons' friends up along on their
family outings.
"Lunch became dinner and
then supper. It was always one
more invitation. That was the
way it was with the whole
family. They were a team," said
Elaine Lesniak, a single mom
whose son, Ari, 14, had been
Oliver's best friend until they
went to different schools.
That never stopped Silverstein.
"At the bus when the kids were
going off to camp, Kelly always
made sure to give Ari a big hug,"
she said.
"Every time you are with him,
you want to be with him more.
You are just drawn to him," said
Ari.
Maybe he was just a big kid in
some ways. He'd take the family
and their friends to a BaskinRobbins ice cream place, seat
them at the window and pay the
kids $1 for every person they
could get to wave to them. "It
was our job to get people to
wave, in a freezing cold night,"
Jill recalled.
Silverstein
attacked
life,
reading three newspapers daily,
tearing out articles to send off to
friends. "We all got them with
the note: FYI, KS," said Bonnie
Blonder, Jill's best friend since
childhood.
As he was often first in the
office of Davis + Henderson
cheque makers, he'd put on the
coffee. "Kelly just wanted to
make sure everyone was happy,"
said Jill with a smile.
He was the youngest of five
children of Sonny and Marlene
Silverstein, of Silverstein's
Bakery. "He was always being
picked up and cuddled," said his
only sister Robin SilversteinEisen.
The family lived in a cul-desac near Lawrence and Marlee
in a house with a basketball
hoop out front that was the
centre of activity for all the
neighbourhood kids. Silverstein
often took his own family back
there. "He called it our `drivebys,'" said Jill. "He'd always tell
the kids who lived in the
houses. He wanted us to know
about the good things."
In 1998, Silverstein had
returned to Toronto after
working in Atlanta when his
mother was diagnosed with
cancer. He postponed finding
work to be with her. It was as if
he pushed himself to get in a
full life's worth of giving.
"This was just his thing – to
do for others," said family
friend Barbara Silverstein (no
relation). "He was so decent. I
have never met anyone like
him."
"I can't tell you how many
people phoned us to volunteer
because they heard about us
from Kelly," said Heather
Sproule, executive director of
Big Brothers and Sisters.
The day after Silverstein
died, her office received a
donation from him via the
United Way. "I had no idea that
beyond all that he was doing for
us, that in his usual quiet
fashion he made an annual
donation through the United
Way."
Next month there will be an
award in Silverstein's name at
the 2007 Bowl for Kids Sake.
"We thought about it for less
than a second," Sproule said. "It
will be a fundraising award,
which at the least is very
fitting."
Brother Silverstein was
a 1985 graduate of the
University of Windsor,
and a member of the
Canada Kappa Iota
chapter of Pi Lambda
Phi Fraternity.
