Eddie’s
tips for
clubbers
Superstar DJ Eddie Haliwell is one of a galaxy of big names
taking to the decks at Creamfields festival this summer. Jane
O’Neill catches up with him to find out what clubbers can
expect and what are the 30-year-old’s festival essentials.
JANE O’Neill (JO): Hello Eddie, it’s
10.30am, Is this early for you, or
are you just getting in?
Eddie Halliwell (EH): No, I’ve been up
since 6.30am and been to the gym. I
think you have to look after yourself.
People ask me what keeps me going
and it’s eating healthily and looking after
myself.
JO: I’m impressed. How long have
you been playing at Creamfields
for?
EH: I think it’s probably about six years
now, in a row. It’s a great gig to be
doing, because when you’re local (Eddie
is from Liverpool), a lot of friends go.
Having your friends there and watching
you play makes it extra special.
Year on year, Creamfields is just getting
stronger and stronger. Last year was
awesome and it is just getting better and
better.
JO: And what about when you’re
not playing gigs? Where do DJs go
for a party?
EH: If I wasn’t a DJ, I would probably be
swanning off somewhere in the sun. No,
I’d probably get together with my mates,
get a few people together. But people’s
social time is my work time.
JO: Now you’re an established DJ,
who are the up-and-coming names
to watch out for?
EH: Loads of new people are always
coming across. We’ve got a guy we are
putting on the radio show (Eddie’s Fire It
Up radio show) called Steve Mulder, who
plays a mix of house and techno and
Jordan Suckley, who’s very technical.
It’s a great time, as so many people
are coming through. It’s easy to get out
there, but you have to be able to stand
up to the test.
People can get their names out there,
but when you get the opportunity, you
have to be able to stand up to it.
JO: What about when you’re not
DJing at Creamfields? Where could
we find you?
EH: Last year I was playing on the
Saturday and went up there with my
pals on the Sunday. I spent all my time
with Sven Vath in the Cocoon arena.
He’s just a wicked guy and great fun to
be around.
JO: And what can people expect
from your set at Creamfields this
year?
EH: To get all fired up! I’m a DJ with
energy and I play music to make sure
people have a good time.
JO: What about your festival
essentials? Any tips?
EH: Something I always have to have
is my earplugs and the other main
things is my wellies. I like to wear a pair
of shades; I’d rather not be wearing
wellies, but if it rains.

Bluetones say farewell
with North East gig
INDIE favourites The Bluetones
will stop off in the North East as
part of their final tour.
They will visit Newcastle’s O2
Academy on Monday, September
12, in a series of shows that mark
the end of an era for the band
which has been going strong since
the early 1990s.
The Bluetones built a big
following on the back of their
brilliant debut album Expecting to
Fly in February 1996.
It knocked Oasis’ (What’s The
Story) Morning Glory? off the
Number 1 spot in the UK album
charts and delivered three top 20
singles, Bluetonic, Slight Return
and Cut Some Rug.
Five more albums have followed
– two of which made the top 10
– but the band members have
announced they intend to make
this next tour their last.
Frontman mark Morriss said:
“After 17 years and six albums,
the time has arrived to call it
a day and move on to other
challenges
“Before disappearing forever,
though, we will be heading out for
one last tour, as a chance to say
farewell and thank-you to all the
fans that have sustained us over
these years.
“It’s gonna be emotional.”

STEVE Turner began his
career on the Manchester
folk scene at the end of the
1960s. He joined the Geordie
band, Canny Fettle in 1970
and toured in Britain and
Europe with them for eight
years.
In 1979, he won the Melody
Maker “Stars of the 80s”
national competition, after
which he turned professional
and toured internationally for
12 years until 1991.
Steve then took a break to
build up a violin business.
He returned to singing
some years ago and has
received much acclaim since.
A highly influential and
popular performer, Steve has
a unique repertoire and is a
very talented musician.
He’s in the North East this
weekend and you can see
him at the Davy Lamp in the
Arts Centre, Washington on
Saturday.
Meanwhile, at the Cricket
Club in Sedgefield on
Saturday, the guest will
be Paul Tilley, a musician/
songwriter, from Grangetown
near Middlesbrough. Paul
mostly works solo with piano
and guitar playing mainly
contemporary and some of his
own material.
Voicemale is a men’s folk
choir based in Morpeth,
established in 2000 under the
direction of Sandra Kerr.
The choir’s repertoire
includes traditional songs
from around the British Isles
but in particular from the
North East.
They’ll be filling the guest
spot at the Rugby Club in
Westoe on Sunday.

Folk
scene

Terri
Freeman
At the Rugby Club in
Guisborough, also on Sunday,
you can sample the talents of
Michelle Holden.
Michelle has dabbled with
various styles over the years,
coming out of “the closet”
in 2006 at Droylsden Folk
Festival and is being seen
increasingly at folk clubs
around the North West.
Tuesday, April 12, sees a
performance by Scots singer
and stalwart of the British folk
scene, Tich Frier. It’s more
than 40 years since Tich Frier
started singing folk songs in
his home town of Edinburgh.
He has established an
enviable reputation as a first
class entertainer and for his
powerful and passionate
singing, accomplished guitar
work and for his sense of
fun. You can catch him at the
South Causey Inn, Stanley.
Guest at the Black Bull in
Blaydon on April 14 will be
Gavin Davenport. A former
member of the excellent
band, Crucible, this Sheffield
singer is now making a career
as a solo artist. Should be well
worth seeing.
Shifting into big time
following through constant gigs in the
region and beyond as well as online
platforms such as MySpace (http://
www.myspace.com/ambershift).
The years have seen the band grab
the attention of various industry bods
landing supporting slots for bands such
as the Futureheads, Electric Six and
Soho Dolls.
The four-piece has also attracted
critical acclaim, receiving glowing
reviews from BBC Introducing, Clash
Music, Narc and Subba Cultcha.
Carrying its success to this new
venture, the band’s reputation
attracted top talent Chris Sheldon to
mix the album who has previously
worked with music legends such as the
Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro and Feeder.
“The album was recorded locally
through Rich McCoull at Base
HQ Studios in Newcastle but was
engineered by Chris in London,”
explains David. “Having someone like
that work on our record is absolutely
mind-blowing and another example of
how far the band has come.”
With the first 1,000 downloads
of its album in the bag, the band is
concentrating on the release of the
second single from the album Russian
Doll, which was released on Monday.
David (lead vocals and bass) along
with Ben Clement (guitar), Andrew
Green (keyboards) and Phil Hodgson
(drums) will be hosting a launch party
for the single at the Dog and Parrott,
Newcastle, tomorrow from 8pm.
The band will also be headlining
at the Gateshead beer festival on
Saturday, April 30.

DURHAM-BORN band Amber Shift
has translated its regional popularity
to sales success with its debut album
hitting 1,000 downloads on iTunes.
Released through the band’s own
record label, Elvet Bridge Recordings,
the self-titled album was launched
towards the end of 2010.
Despite offering free downloads
through its website www.ambershift.

regional and online popularity to gain
a steady momentum of sales on the
downloads site where it also released
the debut single from the album in
August.
David Lord, front man for the band,
said: “Making this album was an
unforgettable experience and reaching
this landmark makes it even sweeter.
Ambershift started as a New Year’s
resolution that I made over four
years ago so to get to this stage has
surpassed all expectations.
“I would just like to thank everyone
who has downloaded the album and
who continues to follow and support
the band. It really is great to know
there are people who enjoy listening
to the music as much as we enjoy
creating it.”
After forming in January 2007,
