NEWS from the Plants NovoCast Named One of John Deere’s Best Suppliers (left) Antonio Sadurni, sales director, Novocast, and (right) Larry Meeske, director of global strategic sourcing, Deere Grede’s Novocast foundry in Mexico is among John Deere’s 16 best suppliers to win a Deere award for quality and on-time delivery. Deere, which is consolidating its suppliers in Mexico from 122 to 72, presented the award to Antonio Sadurni, Grede Novocast, director of sales. Grede Encourages Ties With Educational Institutions, Military Veterans To help employees improve their skills and to spur interest in metal casting careers, Grede has established a variety of ties with high schools, colleges and universities. Its facilities also are hiring military veterans. Grede’s support includes scholarships, cash, equipment donations, student internships, participation in career fairs and foundry visits for students and faculty members. Here are a few examples of Grede’s Commitment: The Browntown, WI, facility, has collaborated with the Blackhawk Technical Col- lege in Monroe to establish a training program for its skilled labor employees. The Reedsburg, WI, foundry has donated new welding jackets and helmets as well as cash to the local high school Industrial Arts Department. At New Castle, IN, Grede works with local colleges to promote engineering and machine maintenance criteria. In Alabama, the company has endowments at Auburn University and the University of Alabama. At Grede’s original Liberty Foundry in Milwaukee, a class of 31 students from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee recently toured the facility to study the processes and technology used in modern production and to meet one-on-one with experts on Grede’s staff. Grede also is actively involved in the new “Get Skills to Work” program that aims to connect veterans to careers in manufacturing. The St. Cloud, MN, foundry has established an endowment at the University of Northern Iowa for scholarships in the metal casting degree program. Doug Grimm Elected OESA Chairman Larry Meeske of Deere said Mexico is one of Deere’s highest performing global units and they will continue growing in Mexico and in the world giving more business to their good suppliers. Doug Grimm, chairman, president and CEO of Grede Holdings LLC, has been elected board chairman of the Original Equipment Suppliers Association (OESA) for the 2013-2014 term. OESA, formed in 1998, has 450 member automotive suppliers with global sales exceeding $300 billion. “We are thrilled to have someone with Doug’s knowledge and enthusiasm serving as chairman,” said Julie Fream, OESA president and CEO. “I am honored and humbled to lead such a prestigious organization,” said Grimm. The goal for this event was to develop new customers in the Industrial sector of our business. We feel that industrial products and associated volumes fall into the “sweet-spot” of our low-to-medium volume divisions like Berlin, Bessemer, Biscoe, Browntown and Teknik. It was a great event and the team was able to secure contacts for many potential new customers. Grede was well represented at the Guadalajara truck show, Expotransporte 2013, in mid-November. The show attracted 300 exhibitors, including numerous Grede customers, and 29,000 visitors. Grede personnel held meetings with Accuride, Sisamex, Daimler and Navistar. The award indicates Chrysler Corp. recognized Brewton “as a role model supplier achieving ‘Perfect Quality’” based on its External Balanced Score- GM Darryl Konsler (left) accepts Liberty Mutual’s Gold Safety Award from Frank Davis, senior consultant, Liberty Mutual. Brewton’s management team and employees were applauded for their continuing efforts towards maintaining a safe workplace. “This is an outstanding accomplishment and is the ¿UVW*ROG$ZDUG,KDYHHYHU given to a foundry operation in almost 38 years!” says Frank Davis, senior consultant, Liberty Mutual. A $900,000 project to reRUJDQL]HWKH¿QLVKLQJDUHD and streamline the operation was completed this fall. The ultimate goal is to in-source the 1,200 to 1,500 tons of casting currently cleaned monthly by outside services.
