QUEEN’S BATON RELAY OFFICIALLY LAUNCED
The Queen's Baton Relay the curtain-raiser to
the XX Commonwealth Games was officially
launched on October 9th, 2013 during a
ceremony held at the Buckingham Palace in
which Her Majesty The Queen placed Her
message to be read at the Opening Ceremony
of the Games inside the baton.
Her Majesty places her message inside the Baton
This much loved tradition of the Commonwealth Games symbolizes the coming
together of all Commonwealth Nations and territories in preparation for the Games.
The baton will be relayed by thousands of people throughout the 70 Commonwealth
Nations and territories over a period of 288 days covering 190,000 kilometers and
involving a third of the world's population, making it the world's most engaging relay
before concluding its journey in time for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games
Opening Ceremony scheduled for July 23rd, 2014 where Her Majesty The Queen’s
message to the Commonwealth will be read aloud before officially declaring the
Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games open.
The baton will showcase each nation and territory
in the Commonwealth as it will visit
many famous landmarks and places of historical
and cultural significance. It will encounter a
wide range of cultures and communities while
promoting diversity and unity. Lifelong memories
will be created as the relay generates excitement
for the Games.
Antigua and Barbuda will host the baton on March 21st to 24th, 2014.

NOC PRESIDENT SPEAKS
Secretary General Completes MEMOS Programme
On behalf of the Executive Members and Staff we would like to express
congratulations to our Secretary General Cliff Williams on successfully completing
the Olympic Solidarity XVI Executive Masters in Sport Organizations Management
(MEMOS) programme in English which ran from September 9th, 2012 to September
14th, 2013. The MEMOS programme seeks to assist sport professionals working
within international sporting organizations to develop the skills and knowledge to be
able to manage and operate their National Olympic Committees at a higher capacity.
Secretary General Cliff Williams Presents his Project
In addition to attending the sessions, candidates had to complete a research project
relating directly to their working environment within a 10 month period from
September 2012 to July 2013.
S.G Williams’, research project was on ‘Governance Reform of the Antigua and
Barbuda National Olympic Committee: Improvement of Image’. This project was
undertaken to improve the image and optimize service deliveries to stakeholders of
the ABOA. During the week of September 8th to 15th, 2013, Mr. Williams publicly
presented and defended his project to a jury comprised of the representatives of the
participating institutions, completing the final component of the program.
“We are happy to inform you (ABOA) that your MEMOS
XVI participant, Cliff Williams, successfully completed the
MEMOS programme, which concluded last Friday, the 13th
of September 2013 in Lausanne, with a public presentation.
We wish to congratulate you on your NOC’s successful
investment and wish you and your MEMOS XVI participant
the best of luck for the implementation of his project. “

NATIONAL TEAM SELECTED FOR 2013 OECS
SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Antigua and Barbuda Swimming Federation (ABSF) announced the 32 member
team that will represent Antigua and Barbuda at the 2013 OECS Swimming
Championships to be held in St. Lucia from November 8th to 10th. At a launch held on
Saturday, October 19th at the Antigua Athletic Club, ABSF President Nelleen RogersMurdoch named the following individuals to the 2013 national team:
Females – India Abbott, Sally Benjamin, Zoe Dennis, Hailey Derrick, Olivia Fuller,
Angelique Gittens, Gabriella Gittens, Maia Hadeed, Makaela Holowchak, Gabriella
John, Aliah Maginley, Bianca Mitchell, Samantha Roberts, Jasmine Sengupta, Rachel
Wall, and Devon Wuilliez.
Males – Daryll Appleton, Alexander Bento, Ethan Bento, Jason Bento, Keyshawn
Christopher, Tanner Esty, Sebastian Gobinet, Orel Jeffrey, Diallo Marshall, Nathan
Marshall, Lleyton Martin, Noah Mascoll-Gomes, Stefano Mitchell, Dylan Ross, J’air
Smith, Jonathan Solomon, Joshua Solomon, and Jaiden Wuillez.
2013 Antigua and Barbuda OECS National Team
These 32 swimmers were selected based on their performance during the ABSF Time
Trials which were held earlier in October and after a final meeting of the ABSF
Selection Committee.
The Team Officials are – Josh Willer, head coach; Nelson Molina, Mark Mitchell and
Wayne Mitchell, assistant coaches; Gisele Hadeed, team manager; and Anna Mitchell
and Peter Wall, team chaperones.
Congratulations to the team and good luck at the Championships.

2013 CARIBBEAN CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations to Tamiko Butler in defending her title as Female Road Race
Champion at the 2013 Caribbean Cycling Championship, held in Curaçao, October
18th to the 20th.
Funding for this trip was made available to the
team through the Commonwealth Games
Team Preparation Grant allocated to the
Antigua and Barbuda Cycling Association
(ABACA). The team consisted of Jyme Bridges,
Omari King, Robert Marsh, Andre Simon,
Marvin Spencer, and lone female
Tamiko. ABACA Technical Director, Stenlie
Matthew, and First Vice President, Jevon

Goodwin, acted as team managers.
ABACA President Cliff Williams made the trip with the team to attend the Caribbean
Cycling Federation Congress. Secretary Roland Morgan was once again the Chief of
Timing and Scoring for the races, using the ABACA Sports Timing System.
Tamiko, the reigning Female Road Race Champion, captured the gold with the time of
1:48.48. Second and third place were captured by Bermudians, Zoenique Williams and
Nicole Mitchell, respectfully. Tamiko also took home silver in the Time Trial race,
finishing behind Kathryn Bertine of St Kitts and Nevis.

The men had great performances but
were unable to produce a podium
finish. In the Time Trial, Jyme Bridges,
National Time Trial Champion, finished
11th and Robert Marsh placed 14th. All
five males completed in the Road
Race: Jyme finished with the best time
of the team, placing 20th with a time of
3:17:18, followed by Robert who came
40th; Andre Simon placed 41st, Omari
King 48th and Marvin Spencer 50th.
ABACA’s President Cliff Williams commended the team for their performance and
highlighted that this is the first time that all the cyclists competing for Antigua in a
major championship were able to finish the race.
President Greene, executive members and staff of the ABOA takes this opportunity to
congratulate the team and encourage them to continue with their preparation ahead
of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Everton “Mano” Cornelius
Mr. Everton Howard Cornelius was born on May 6th, 1955. Cornelius was a part of
the team who attended Antigua’s first Olympic Games in Montreal, 1976. He
ranked #7 in Heat One, running at a time of 41.84secs in the Men's 4 × 100 metres
Relay.

AWARDS/RECOGNITION
The BOC will honour past president Sir Arlington Butler for his
involvement in sports, and his work as president of the Bahamas
Olympic Association for 36 years, at a black tie gala event
scheduled for November 1 at the Government House, Bahamas.
He will be the first Bahamian to receive the Pierre de Coubertin
Award, one of the most highly regarded awards doled out by the
International Olympic Committee. The De Coubertin medal is a
special decoration to those persons “who exemplify the spirit of
sportsmanship in Olympic events or through exceptional service
to the Olympic movement.” Treasurer Mr. Neville Fenton
will attend and present a plaque to Sir Arlington on behalf of the
Antigua and Barbuda Olympic Association.
