Katie and I went to Target! She told me she needed some new
cosmetics so we went shopping and I told her to pick out all the
makeup she would normally buy. I told her I would be scanning
the products for their ingredients, but I didn’t tell her my
alterative motive, I knew that Target has a growing natural and
organic cosmetic section and it was my goal to 1) see how the
products matched up and 2) see if I could get her to switch
over!
Foundation
Original: L’Oreal Pairs True Match Powder Price: $7.99 Skin Deep Score: 5 Her Reaction: Shocked at the high immunotoxicity in the product. As well as the several cancer causing agents My Reaction: Surprised at the two ingredients rated as a 7 Alternative: W3ll People Altruist Foundation Price: $31.50 Skin Deep Score: 2 Result:
She did not buy the alternative solution, but because
the rating of the L’Oreal Foundation shocks her she is
going to research a more affordable safer alternative!
Mascara
Original: Maybelline Great Lash Mascara Price: $4.49 Skin Deep Score: 5 Her Reaction: Again, shocked at the two ingredients that were rated as a 7. My Reaction: There was a fair about of ingredients rated at 1 so that was a pleasant surprise. However, their were two that were rated a 7. Alternative: Physicians Formula Organic Wear Mascara Price: $6.79 Skin Deep Score: 1 Result:
She decided to buy the organic alternative! The slight
price difference was no match for the benefits of great
ingredients.
Eye Liner
Original: Almay Intense i-­‐color Eyeliner Price: $4.69 Skin Deep Score: 4 Her Reaction: She thought it would be higher after going though the last two products. But still is uncomfortable with the ingredients that are carcinogens My Reaction: I used to use this product, and though I was happy the score was lower than the last two, I still did not like the score. Alternative: Physicians Formula Shimmer Stripes Eyeliner Price: $9.69 Skin Deep Score: 2 Result:
She bought the Physicians Formula Eyeliner! She did not
feel comfortable putting carcinogen ingredients right
next to her eyes!
Shampoo
Original: Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Shampoo Price $2.99 (on sale) Skin Deep Score : 4 Her Reaction: When we were looking at the ingredients we realized that this shampoo had an ingredient that was rated the highest so far at an 8. She was shocked by this, that ingredient was the fragrance! My Reaction: I was surprised that the shampoo had the ingredient with the highest rating! Alternative: Acure Organics Moroccan Arga Oil Shampoo Price: $9.99 Skin Deep Score: 1 (yay!) Result:
We were both shocked at the ingredient ratings of the
Garier Fructies Shampoo! While we were on the topic
of Shampoo and Conditioner we started talking about
the environmental impacts of these products too,
because they simply get washed down the drain. She
bought the Acure Shampoo! Conditioner
Original: Garnier Fructies Sleek & Shine Conditioner Price: $4.99 Skin Deep Score: 4 Her Reaction: Just like the shampoo, the conditioner had an ingredient that was rated an 8. And again it was the fragrance, she was completely taken aback by this, and thought that there defiantly could be a better ingredient that would not rate as high yet would smell just as good. My Reaction: I completely agree with her on this! I do not understand why they need to use an ingredient to make it smell good when it is a harmful ingredient! There are other ingredients that can do the same job! Alternative: Acure Organics Moroccan Oil Conditioner Price: $9.99 Skin Deep Score: 2 Result:
She was more than happy to buy the Acure Organics
Conditioner!
Face wash
Original: Neutrogena Oil-­‐Free Acne Wash Price: $6.16 (sale) Skin Deep Score: 5 Her Reaction: Not totally surprised by the score. Though still shocked that the highest scoring ingredient was the fragrance with an 8! My Reaction: I was more surprised. I thought that the face wash was going to score higher! Alternative: Acure Organics Brightening Facial Scrub Sea Kelp Price: $9.99 Skin Deep Score: 2 Result:
She was very excited when I showed her the Acure
Face Scrub because she has been looking for a new
face wash. She didn’t like the harmful chemicals that
was in the Neutrogena product, but didn’t know where
to look! She ended up buying the Acure Product!
Result of The Trip
All in all I Katie and I were both very pleased
with this trip! Though we spent a lot of time
in Target, we talked about a lot of the heath
and environmental hazards that cosmetics
produced. We talked about all the different
option that were given to us, and how they
were presented. We also saw some
examples of green washing! Katie expressed
interest in learning more about cosmetics
and how she can change her daily routine
to become more healthy and sustainable!
