lunch menu - Shanghai Mamas
Having won every conceivable
award for his artistry, as well as
having received uniformly laudatory reviews of his shows in scores
of world capitals, it may with
conviction be stated that the preeminent master of the photographic art is Bang M Cochran.
Mr. Cochran has been seen in all
quarters with cameras of many
formats hung about his person as
he, with eagle eye, composes photographs from the Bund to the
Whangpoo River that capture our
city’s robust yet mysterious spirit.
Inspired by his surroundings,
Bang’s concentration has been so
intense that he frequently forgets
to eat, a situation remedied by his
assistant, Miss Kaitlyn, who
fetches delicacies from Shanghai
Mama’s to keep up his strength.
‘I couldn’t do it without Mama,’ says
Mr. Cochran. Asked to comment,
Mama glared at this correspondent
and said, "Eat your noodles!"

A busy week in the Paris of the

the West? Ah, but where in Paris
can one thrill to the equestrian
fervor of the Paper Hunt? Seen at

What, ladies, no side saddle?
Scandalous!
Just arrived at the Cunard wharf,
wrapped in furs and the latest
Parisian frippery, the exquisite
Lady Emilie. And who was that
count we saw you with last night?
‘Ah, darling,’ purred the lovely
Lady, ‘he is my future ex-husband.’
Also arrived, and by the same
ship, Sir William Gilden III, Earl
of Morrow. Pleasure, Sir Gilden?
Or do you plan to add to your
astonishing collection of chinoiserie? Perhaps we should ask
Lady Emilie?

CAPONE RIVAL VANISHES
Missing Chicago Gangster’s Hat Spotted in Nanking Road
THE LURE OF SHANGHAI
Shanghai in Mama’s day was a
exciting, eclectic mix of people,
food and culture. China had
never seen such an influx of foreigners.. and what a group they
were. White Russian nobility
escaping the Bolshevik revolution, Jewish scholars fleeing pogroms in Europe, and traders of
questionable repute from all over
the world, came to the city called
"Paris of the East" to make their
RICSHA COOLIE’S
NEGLIGENCE
Foreign Passenger’s
Broken Leg
For negligent handling of his ricsha which led to the injury of a
foreign passenger, a ricsha coolie
known as Ronnie East was at the
Mixed Court on Saturday sentenced to five day’s imprisonment. The passenger, Miss Anna
Choi, sustained a broken leg and
injuries which will necessitate
her remaining in hospital for several months. Her daughter Rachel
was not injured. First aide was
given by Dr. Deb Richardson, of
the US missionary group.
The employer of the negligent
coolie, recent Russian emigrés
Sam Scheff, who with his brothers Max and Ben, manages the
Shanghai office of the United
Consolidated Acme Ricsha
Company, was heard to voice his
disapproval of the incident by
speculating upon the possible
replacement of coolies by motorized ricshas.
IMPROMPTU
CONCERT AMUSES
Louis Armstrong
Unexpected Delight
The marble halls of the Cathay
Hotel in the Bund rang with peals
of laughter and rounds of
applause as jazz great, Louis
Armstrong, entertained late
evening revelers at the Horse and
Hounds Bar.
fortune. Gangsters openly ruled
and opium was available by
room service at all the fine
hotels. We’ve taken some
liberties with the menu and decor
and
hope
that
you
appreciate the lure of Shanghai
as well. However, should you
choose to be one of "those
questioning " types, we refer you
to what Mama still says:
"Shut up and eat your noodles!"
Mr. Armstrong, on a world tour
following simultaneous sold-out
premiéres in the West End and
Chicago, entertained the delighted patrons with excerpts from his
many well-known jazz creations
as well as a new melody titled
The Shanghai Shuffle.
Somewhat less elated were the
trio of American jazz artists
whose performance was interrupted and finally supplanted by
Louis Armstong’s impromptu
performance.
Reassured by the manager that
they would nevertheless be paid,
the three, Miss Ann Chamberlain,
Mr. Wayne Yeager, and Mr.
Morgan, fell under Louis
Armstrong’s spell and, after the
third or fourth round of highballs,
accompanied him for the remainder of his performance.
DR. H. H. KUNG
RECOVERED AFTER
OPERATION
A message from Tientsin states
that Dr. H. H. Kung, the
Nationalist Minister of Industry,
Commerce and Labour, who was
operated upon for acute appendicitis a week ago at the Peking
Union Medical College, has now
fully recovered, according to Dr.
Yathiraj, the doctor in charge.
General and Madame Chiang
Kai-shek, General Yen Hsi-shan,
General Li Chung-jen and
the Japanese Minister, Mr.
Yoshizawa, called on the patient,
who conversed cheerfully, showing no signs of fatigue.
Having boasted to colleagues that
the Shanghai criminal establishment was ‘small potatoes’ and
ripe for appropriation by ‘my
boys’, Chicagos Jeff “The Ruby”
has gone missing after a whirlwind tour of the city last week.
Accompanied at all times by
Yung Ham Sap Lo, a suspected
diamond smuggler, Mr. Ruby frequented nightclubs such as the
Majestic Café, with visits to Del
Monte’s, and other familiar spots.
With his thin-striped doublebreasted suits, Havana cigars and
trademark fedora of unusually
large circumference, Mr. Ruby,
cut a dashing figure and soon
became familiar to cabaret habitués and various other patrons of
Shanghai’s nightlife.
On Thursday last, Mr. Ruby was
observed boarding the private ricsha of reputed crime magnate
Mike “The Cook” Ly, on the
Waterfront. A heated discussion
was said to have ensued.
Mr. Ruby has not been seen or
heard from since that day.
Mr. Ruby had a reputation in
Chicago second only to that of
‘Scarface Al’ Capone. Anyone
with information is asked to
telephone Chief Constable Sarah
Strite at the Precinct.
CONFUSION IN THE
FRENCH CONCESSION
Detectives Sent to Arrest
Each Other
Chief Detective Du Yuesheng of
the French Concession Sûreté
office was surprised to learn on
Friday last that Chief Detective
Pockmarked Huang of the
International Settlement constabulary force was in possession of a warrant for his arrest,
charging multiple violations of
the district’s regulations concerning opium importation, possession and sale. By an extraordinary,
coincidence,
Mr.
Yuesheng was in possession of a
similar warrant for the arrest of
Mr. Huang. As it is no secret that
each of these gentlemen is also
leader of the gang that controls
the opium trade and petty crime
in his respective district, little
consequence save amusement
resulted from the confrontation.
Messrs. Huang and Yuesheng
extract from each opium establishment under their respective
control the sum of 30¢ per pipe
per day, a rate that yields a
profit of approximately $400,000
per month.
It was determined that the warrants were issued by Constable
Joe Strite and Sergeant LeBlanc,
junior police officials newly posted to Shanghai whose grasp of
the complexities of local traditions was somewhat insufficient.
It is reported that both officials
booked passage for Liverpool on
the Bellerophon, which departed
on Saturday.
FRENZY IN THE
BUBBLING WELL
ROAD
New Restaurant Attracts
Thousands
‘Shanghai Mama’s’ an
Immediate Favourite
The click and clatter of thousands
of chopsticks could be heard as
far away as the Bund, periodically punctuated by cries of ‘shut up
and eat your noodles’, as
Shanghai Mama’s, the city’s newest and most fashionable restaurant, opened to mad acclaim.
As thousands of would-be diners
descended upon the establishment, no doubt drawn and mesmerized by the sumptuous aromas of rapturous delicacies emanating therefrom, Mama herself
could be seen with a megaphone
some four feet in length directing
the crowds in Bubbling Well
Road to form an orderly queue
stretching for several city blocks.
The restaurant’s take-away counter was equally mobbed by a
noisy yet orderly crowd.
Mama was heard to say that
with the evident success of this
new venture, it would be possible
for her to realize her dream in
fairly short order — to open
a
second
restaurant
in
downtown Cincinnati.
Asked when the new venture
would open, ‘Mama replied’,
“When I’m ready!”
The editors propose to print a
map of this new location for readers of the Shanghai Times as soon
as it can be determined just where
Cincinnati is located.
