Reflections for Students and Families
September 2015 National PTA Reflections Program Dear Students and Families of Green Hills School and Green Township, The Green Township PTA is once again offering an opportunity for students to explore and share their talents in the arts by taking part in the National PTA’s cornerstone arts program called Reflections. The contest will officially begin in September and end on October 28, 2015(deadline for all submissions to be received by Green Township PTA). Any student (including homeschoolers) in Pre-‐K through Grade 12 who lives in Green Township may participate. Additionally, any student who attends Green Hills School but does not reside in Green Township may participate (as long as the town in which they reside has a PTA in good standing). Students who participate in the Reflections program get an opportunity to explore the arts and culture, develop creative thinking and problem-‐solving skills and recognize themselves as artists. This year’s entries should reflect upon and interpret the theme: Let Your Imagination Fly. Students may create one entry for each of the art categories below, within a specific grade division. All work must be the original work of one student, though others may appear in the work. Each entry must contain a title and an artist statement (at least one sentence and not to exceed 100 words). . Literature . Film production . Musical composition . Photography . Dance choreography . Visual arts Grade Divisions: . Primary: Pre-‐school – Grade 2 . Intermediate: Grades 3 – 5 . Middle School: Grades 6 – 8 . High School: Grades 9 – 12 • Special Artist: All grades (for those with physical, cognitive or mental health challenges, per Americans with Disabilities Act; however, student can alternatively opt to enter through any of the other grade divisions) 2 National PTA Reflections Program Families can support their children’s participation by creating time and space for them to work on their entries and providing encouragement and required materials. Entries should represent students’ unique creativity. Adults are welcome to encourage students and have a conversation with them to explore the theme and how they may go about expressing it, but are asked not to assist in any way with their interpretation of the theme or artistic expression. Instructions for entry include: 1)
Following official contest rules (links provided on attached sheet or at NJPTA.org/reflections-‐toolkit) to create an original piece of artwork 2)

Box 137, Tranquility, NJ 07879-‐0137. Entries will be judged blindly by a local judging panel made up of PTA members, teachers, and expert members of our community. Judging will be based on interpretation of the theme (20 points), artistic merit/creativity (10 points), and mastery of medium (10 points). Three winners per category will be awarded prizes. Additionally, a pizza or ice cream party will be awarded to the homeroom at Green Hills School with the most participation. (Congratulations to Mr. Martin’s class for winning last year!) Local winning entries will be sent to county for judging. Those winners go to state and state winners go to national. Recognition is awarded at each level. At the National level, winners are given certificates, medallions, a place in the on-‐line gallery of winners, and up to $800 in arts education awards.
