WHY WE ARE HERE OUR PROGRAM Did you know over one-third of American youth ages 10-17 are obese or overweight? Sound Body Sound Mind donates a complete physical fitness package to schools, including: • State-of-the-art fitness center Budget cuts have forced schools to cutback or eliminate resources for vital physical education programs, contributing to an increased number of physically inactive students. We are combating childhood obesity by providing educators and schools with fitness resources and opportunities to help prepare students for a lifetime of healthy activity. • • Fitness education curriculum Professional development for educators We also provide follow-up support for our partner schools, including: • Funds for extracurricular supervision of the fitness center • Grants to maintain the fitness center equipment OUR MISSION The mission of the Sound Body Sound Mind Foundation is to promote self-confidence and healthy lifestyle choices among our nation’s youth. Our History Established in 1999, the Sound Body Sound Mind Foundation was founded by Cindy and Bill Simon. Shocked by the dismal statistics on youth fitness and childhood obesity, the Simons took action by donating a state-ofthe-art fitness center to their local Los Angeles area high school, addressing the lack of fitness opportunities available to students in their community. The popularity of the program lead them to establish the Sound Body Sound Mind Foundation as a permanent resource for physical education teachers and schools. OUR impact We are pleased to work with over 100 schools in four states across the nation. Over half of our fitness centers are located in lowincome communities, where students have limited access to safe fitness resources. Now impacting over 100,000 students a year, Sound Body Sound Mind has contributed over $3.5 million to enhance physical education programs in schools since 1999.
