Nebraska Council on Economic Education Our Mission The mission of the Nebraska Council on Economic Education is to act as a catalyst and lead a statewide initiative to advance economic literacy. Our Values We believe that students should develop economic ways of thinking and problem solving that they can use in their lives as consumers, savers, investors, members of the workforce, responsible citizens and effective participants in a global economy. Our Vision The vision of the Nebraska Council on Economic Education is to assure that all students from kindergarten through high school have an on-going education in economics and to enhance teachers’ understanding of economics and their ability to teach economic concepts to their students. http://ecedweb.unomaha.edu A Letter from the Executive Chair The Nebraska Council on Economic Education continues its important mission of educating teachers and students in the state about our economic system. The Council supports credit courses and curriculum workshops for teachers as well as a variety of activities for students. The programs are delivered throughout Nebraska by the five centers for economic education located at the three University of Nebraska campuses in Lincoln, Omaha and Kearney and at Chadron and Wayne State colleges. The Council continues to search for a full-time president who would also become a faculty member in the UNL Department of Economics. In the meantime Bill Walstad, Professor of Economics at UNL, continues to serve as the interim Council President. A national search is underway for an economist to fill the full-time position. I wish to thank all of the 2003–2004 contributors to the Council’s efforts to enhance and promote economics education in Nebraska. The program depends on contributions from the many businesses and individuals who value these programs. The public support from the University of Nebraska and the state colleges is also vital because it provides the foundation for reaching the many teachers who are served by our staff, and who, in turn, provide a multiplier effect when they teach about the economy to Nebraska students. All of this support is greatly appreciated. I can assure you that your contributions are leveraged into support for educating many students in all corners of the state and toward improving economic and financial literacy among the citizens of this state. We look forward to building on this strong foundation for even more successful programs in 2005. When asked what they liked most about the day spent on the topic of money, students said: “It was fun to have the banker come,” and “The President of US Bank came and talked to us!” Annual Report 2003–2004 3 A Letter from the Interim President I am pleased to have had the opportunity to serve as the interim President of the Nebraska Council. This organization continues to assist Nebraska teachers and schools in meeting their goal to increase the economic and personal financial understanding of Nebraska students. We continue to accomplish this mission by supporting the work of our five academic centers for economic education. This past year the Council, through its centers, has been very productive in training teachers, preparing and distributing curriculum materials, and offering special programs for students. That essential work will continue during my tenure in this position. I am looking forward to another exciting year as I work with the Council’s Board of Trustees and its Executive Committee as we make the transition to new leadership. I commend all of the Council’s contributors for their support during the past year. The Nebraska Council remains a highly effective organization due to the partnership between these private contributions and the public support of the Univeristy of Nebraska. Conducted 3 pre-service training sessions and 3 pre-service workshops for 82 future educators. Provided 37 workshops and other programs for 1166 teachers and administrators. Some learning experiences also directly involved 683 elementary and secondary students. Sponsored 660 teams that registered for the Nebraska Stock Market Game, representing over 3000 students. An essay contest was also offered to game participants. Economics is Everywhere! The first annual economics camp for middle level students entitled, Economics is Everywhere took twelve students on a journey into the exciting world of economics as it related to money, entertainment, government, sports, and the global economy. The five day event was hosted by the UNL Center for Economic Education. Each of the five, fun-filled days included a variety of activities, speakers, and fieldtrips. This camp was the first of its kind in Nebraska and was a “huge success” according to the participants. Comments on Economics is Everywhere Camp: “I hope you have another economics camp next year!” -Camp participant “This camp makes economics come alive!” -Camp participant “We are impressed that you have put this together. Guffey Memorial Scholarship Since its inception in 2002, the Richard L. Guffey memorial scholarship has been awarded to 43 Nebraska teachers for participating in courses held at the Council’s five Centers for Economic Education. This past year the scholarship program provided 12 scholarships covering tuition and course related expenses for teachers enrolled in college credit programs during the summer of 2004 at the Council’s five Centers for Economic Education. Richard L. Guffey was the chairman and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska and also served as a member of the NCEE board of trustees and executive committee for over 10 years. The scholarship program is administered by the Nebraska Council on Economic Education and helps educate Nebraska teachers in teaching economics.
