FUNDRAISING UPDATE
FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR...
Do you consider yourself a patron of the arts
and humanities? The history of patronage
dates back hundreds of years and was long
considered a requirement for advancement
in social status. Michelangelo’s patron
was Pope Julius II, Beethoven composed
many works for Archduke Rudolph and
as recently as the 1940s Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring was
commissioned by the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation at the
Library of Congress. Humanitarians had their patrons as well. Galileo’s
academic pursuits were supported by the Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinando
I de’ Medici. Take a moment and suppose that the works and ideas
from these minds had not been given the opportunity to unfold through
the encouragement, trust, and funding of their patrons. Would we then
live in a world that didn’t know Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony or wasn’t
graced by the majesty of the Sistine Chapel ceiling?

The Nebraska Cultural Endowment is proud to provide long-term,
sustainable financial support to Humanities Nebraska and the
Nebraska Arts Council. From these two respected organizations,
humanitarians and artists alike are provided the tools and the platform
to create, think, and perform and Nebraskans across the state are the
beneficiaries.
As we wrap up our current $5,000,000
campaign in 2016, we look to patrons
throughout the state to help us confirm
our commitment to the growth and
importance of arts and culture in every
community. The All for the Match
campaign has $300,000 remaining to
reach its goal with a 4:1 matching grant
that challenges us to seek funding from
Greater Nebraska. Additionally, every
dollar donated to the Cultural Endowment is matched, dollar-for-dollar,
by the state’s public fund, more than doubling every gift. In these
remaining months we call on your generosity to help us see to fruition
the creation of these two $10,000,000 funds from which the earnings
will benefit Humanities Nebraska and the Arts Council for generations.
Only time will reveal the merits of our investment, but I cherish the
potential and thank you in advance for your patronage.

The Nebraska Cultural Endowment
has become increasingly vital to
Humanities Nebraska as we work to
provide all Nebraskans with access
to high quality, educational programs
involving history, literature, culture, and other areas
of the humanities. The Cultural Endowment enables
us to fund many of the grants we provide to local
organizations offering programs to their communities.
It helps us provide easy access to entertaining and
educational speakers on many different topics,
reaching tens of thousands of Nebraskans of all
ages and walks of life every year in schools, libraries,
senior centers, museums, and other public venues.
And it has been critical to our ability to grow the Prime
Time Family Reading Time program for underserved
children and families. The cultural life of Nebraska
is truly stronger thanks to the Nebraska Cultural
Endowment and all who support it.

Thanks to the Cultural
Endowment the Nebraska
Arts Council has been able
to increase its support of
arts organizations statewide
by 40%. It has also become a catalyst for our
long term investments in education. Thanks
to the Cultural Endowment, the Nebraska
Arts Council was able to financially support
the development and implementation of
state curriculum standards in the fine arts,
which will have a positive impact on our
children well into the future. It also has
made it possible for more exhibitions and
performances to reach school children,
particularly in rural areas where experiencing
professional arts activity is limited.

DISTRIBUTION GROWTH
Since the first distribution in 1999, the Nebraska Cultural Endowment and its
matching state fund have contributed more than $8,400,000 to the Nebraska
Arts Council and Humanities Nebraska for arts and culture grants and programs
throughout the state.
