January Meeting Topic:
Drivers Ed and Club Racing 2010
WHAT: Monthly Meeting
WHEN: Wed. January 20th, 7:30pm
WHERE: Bung’s Tavern
The first monthly meeting of the
New Year will take place on January
20th at 7:30 pm at Bungs Tavern on Rt
130. Our first DE event of the year is
scheduled for March 20-21 (Saturday
and Sunday) at Thunderbolt Raceway,
New Jersey Motorsports Park in
Millville. If you are a DE regular you
will want to attend the January
meeting to find out the rest of the
schedule (or you’ll have to wait for the
announcement later in the year).
If you’ve never done a DE event and are
considering getting involved this is the meeting
to attend. Our panel of experienced DE’rs will
review all aspects of the sport including DE
guidelines, safety tech inspections, car
preparation and DE registration procedures. You
will have an opportunity to have all of your
concerns addressed and your questions
answered. We will also review the layouts of the
tracks we visit as well as their current status
(there have been some changes).
On the Club Racing side we will discuss the required
steps, procedures and a time table for obtaining a CR license.
We will also review the various car classes and restrictions as
well as the 2009 Schattenbaum Showdown Club Race that was
held at NJMP last August.

We aim to please in the
coming year…

We had a great year in
2009. How do I define success? Let’s see, the
track junkies got their fix of driving time. Our
Drivers Education program was cash positive and
in these tough economic times, that’s big. Lot’s of
credit goes to the DE team, Dan, Pete D., John B.,
Kevin, Pete T. The club race was also a big
success. Again, lots of hard work by the
organizers, Dan, Pete, Mike. We had a number of
social events, thanks Claudia! The Holiday Party was great and the food was excellent. There a number of fun driving
tours and car shows, thanks David D. and Robert. The newsletter went electronic, thanks Dan M and Jon. And Rob kept
the website up to its usual high standard. Bobby welcomed our new members, and Todd handled secretarial duties as
well as working hard on our charitable giving efforts. Jon S. counted the beans and kept us on budget.
So what’s coming in 2010? The starting line up on the board will
return at their usual positions. We are fortunate to hand off the tech
support duties to Rob Provost of Provost Motorsports. Remember

Rob is available to answer questions about the oily bits in our cars.
We had a board meeting on December 16th to plan the events and
activities of 2010. I remember last year’s kick off meeting. Being
new to the job, I wanted to jump right in. My first decree was that all
the Board members should submit an article to the newsletter
throughout the year. And I never followed up. Last night we went
around the table and made writing assignments. I started by asking
for topics from the team. A few folks stepped right up. A few had that
look of a fifth grader when the teacher said “We will be doing a term
paper this month.” Either way, you can expect a few more articles
from the board, and I know Dan M. particularly likes to get member
contributions into the newsletter, so send him your best stuff!

Of course we will have our usual list of
events in 2010. I would also like to take this
opportunity to ask the membership for
suggestions and support with new meeting
topics or events you may have in mind. I have
heard some comments that folks would like to

of some guest speakers that could contribute
to our monthly meetings. Send us your
suggestions and we will do out best! Happy

The Roller
In the parts business you have to know what it
fits, what it cost new, how rare it is and what
people are willing to pay…
“Dan I see you have listed a ‘ 79 930 Turbo Roller for sale at $11,000. I think that price is way too high. Tell me why you
think this car is worth that type of money.” I get questions everyday from Porsche shops, PCA members and perspective
buyers trying to gather information about cars or parts. Some questions deal with what fits what, problem areas with certain
cars and others involve pricing. I deal with these questions on a daily basis, so I have a good finger on the Porsche pulse.
As far as what fits what, people often think because the cars look alike the parts from one year will fit another. It isn’t so. In
most years the cars look similar but what is under the skin is a different ball game. Some parts are interchangeable some are
not. There isn’t a day goes by that I don’t use the Porsche parts program called PET. Its invaluable as a resource that
provides diagrams and part numbers.
It seems that whenever Porsche would bring out a new model, engine upgrade or other change there were always
problems. We found out in Pano, Excellence or a Porsche tech who was experiencing these problems real time. Interestingly
there are a whole new group of Porsche buyers out there who are buying these older cars blind. Whether it is a 2.7 911, 1985
944, 1990 964 or a 3.2 1987 911, these new buyers don’t know the cars. The good news is that there are a lot of PCA people
around to help them, the bad news is they already have made a uninformed buy.
Pricing is less than scientific. One way is to use half the cost of the new part’s selling price. This method is often used by
salvage yards. Yet in truth there are other factors which effect the price. The condition of the part, rarity of part and, one of
the most important; how many people want that part. This is often called supply and demand. For example; The ’97 - ‘99
Boxster’s are being made in to races cars for a PCA Boxster spec series. For this series the cars interior gets gutted and the
convertible top is removed (along with many other items). Now there is an over supply of surplus Boxster parts where there
was little demand to start. Used Boxster parts are going for five cents on the dollar.
Another factor is NLA which tired to supply at the highest level. This term means No Longer Available from any source.
These parts, even used, bring a premium far over the new part price. Examples: A NLA part Targa top latch handle for 1972
Targa cost $15 new when available, yet today is worth $75 used.
So to be in the parts business you have to know what it fits, what it cost new, how rare it is and lastly what people are
willing to pay.
Now, back to the guy who questioned why my Turbo Cab roller was worth $11K. Here are the facts:
1. This car has a clear, clean title.
2. This is a true Turbo clone. The owner spent $72K making a ‘79 Targa in to a Turbo Cab complete with Turbo engine,
transmission, suspension and brakes.
3. The car is all metal.
4. The high-quality parts on this car are very rare, costly and desirable.
Here was my email reply to him:
You asked why this car is worth $11,000 - it is a good question. Here are the parts currently on the car and the price of
each.
1. Front suspension, complete: $1500
2. Rear turbo suspension: $2500
3. New manual black top, complete: $3000
4. True Turbo front fenders, pair: $2500
5. True Turbo rear quarters: $1800
6. Doors complete, pair: $1400
7. Front windshield: $500
8. Interior, complete less seats: $1200
9. Gauges: $700
10. Front valance and spoiler: $1500
11. Undamaged chassis with title: $1500
12. Front and rear bumpers, complete: $900
13. Gas tank: $600
14. Oil system: $800
This comes to $20,400 not counting crumbs. Looking at these numbers you maybe right, I haven’t priced the car correctly.
It’s actually worth more.
I haven’t heard back from him.

There will be plenty of opportunities to see
exciting race events around our Region...

Season three: Bigger and better than ever
Twenty-ten will be season number three for New Jersey Motorsports Park with continued growth in the number of
scheduled events. This season sees the expansion to 17 spectator events on all three of the tracks including the only North
American round of a world karting series and a New Jersey Road Race series for motorcycles.
The fun starts in April
The season starts with the SCCA Pro Racing Weekend featuring the revived TransAm and other SCCA Pro races. The
New Jersey Vintage Grand Prix and Family Festival will be May 21-23 and feature not only racing but two car shows and a
great mix of fun family activities. The Grand Am race will be moving from the May date it has had for the last two years to
July 16-18. On June 5-6 SCCA National racing returns to NJ for the first time in 40 years with 26 classes competing. June
closes with the Mazda Formula Zoom Weekend featuring the Formula Atlantic and for the first time in NJ the ALMS’s Patron
GT3 race. July will end with the Ferrari Challenge on July 30-August 1.
The ARCA Remax series returns on August 13-15. The crown jewel of the four wheeled vehicle races (for our Club) will be
Schattenbaum’s August 27-29 PCA Club Race followed by the AMA Superbike Series on Labor Day weekend. The AMA
weekend so far has brought the largest spectator crowds to NJMP. The VRG Vintage Weekend will conclude the spectator
events on Lightening on September 23-25.

Am will be at Lime Rock Park in
Connecticut on May 28-31, Watkins
Glen June 5-6, Mid Ohio June 1920 and back to the Glen on August
7. The ALMS series will be at Lime
Rock Park July 23-24 and Mid Ohio
August 7.

Schattenbaum’s 2009 Charities
Schattenbaum Region PCA made its yearly charitable donations for 2009 at the November
monthly meeting. The Club donated $1000 to each of two local organizations.
The Board reviewed more than 10 different suggestions from the membership before selecting
two organizations – one located in the northern portion of the Region and one from the southern
portion. We asked representatives from each organization to join our meeting to accept the
donations and describe what their organization does.
