angel of light.” (2 Corinthians
11:14) One comedian said, “I
donʼt believe in ghosts. Iʼm just
scared of ʻem.” Many people
have the same attitude regarding the Biblical character Satan. They
say that they donʼt believe in him, but they tend to shy away from
anything or anyone that seems to be enamored with the guy. One
reason for this fear is that some imagine the big “D” to be like the
fanged Miltonian image of a hideous, horned, crimson creature with
a bifurcated tail and carrying a trident. I dare say that if he showed
up like this, most folks would clear out ASAP.
As the above passage indicates, though, Satan has done a fantastic PR job at remaking his image. Not only can the devil photo
shop himself into a good looking guy, he is also an accomplished
spin doctor. He has the ability to portray all sorts of sinful and destructive activity as attractive and even wholesome. “Ye shall be as
gods,” he told Adam and Eve, “knowing (determining) good and
evil.” It certainly sounded good, but the result was tragic!
The Bible tells us his destiny. It says that “The devil that deceived
them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone,…and shall be
tormented day and night forever and ever.” (Revelation 20:10)
