Honors Our Rescue Veterans by Linda DeCelles, Berner Inc. Rescue Chair O ver the years, Berner, Inc. has taken many veterans into rescue. These Berners often come into our program with preexisting health issues. Some come to us with common conditions of aging, such as arthritis. Their fosters and adopters provide the physical assistance they need. Some Berners are surrendered with major medical problems, such as nerve damage or limited mobility due to untreated injuries, for example, torn ACLs. We all strive to provide the treatment that these veteran dogs require and deserve. A trend in rescue 2014 has been rehoming requests for Berners seven years and older. Three senior Berners Bailey Murray, Lizzy, and Bailey - are typical of Berners whose owners are no longer able or willing to care for an older Berner. All three are living happily and getting appropriate care in loving Lizzy foster homes. We have found many dedicated Berner lovers to adopt older Berners and to care for them in their senior years, Murray regardless of their ailments. Sometimes our senior Berners are adopted by their fosters - Daisy May, 8 plus years old, who appears in this issue, represents one of our “failed foster” veterans. And then there are the many Berners who are adopted from our rescue program as youngsters and go on to live long, quality lives with their adopters. Typical of these veterans is Gracie, who was adopted as a puppy by the Grebus family and is now nine years old - see inset. Many other Veterans honored in this issue are adopted from Berner Inc. Berner, Inc. honors the dedicated volunteers and fosters who help us rescue senior Berners. We honor the adopters whose love and care in lifelong homes make it possible for our young rescues to grow up to become veterans. And we honor the rescued veteran Berners themselves: Their perseverance and devotion warm our hearts year after year. WE ARE THE RESCUE ARM OF THE NASHOBA CLUB My husband and I adopted Gracie from BMDCNV Berner Rescue when she was 10 weeks old. Both our dogs are now 9 years old and both rescues. They are doing great and are best buddies... here's a pic of them in the car. I think it is my car, but they clearly have a different opinion. We are lucky to be their humans.
