from the Executive Director
As many of you know, I will be stepping down from my 10-year role as Executive Director of the Provincetown
Film Society and so this will be my last letter welcoming you to the Provincetown International Film Festival.
As I look back at the last decade, I marvel not only at how the town and its residents have embraced
the Festival and the Film Society, but at how the organization has risen in stature in the film festival and
independent film worlds.
The $1.1million Capital Campaign that PFS launched in 2010 will end in December, and we are only $275,000
shy of the goal. Waters Edge Cinema has been in continuous operation for its first full year, showing first run art house films. PFS rebuilt it,
doubled its size, outfitted it with state of the art equipment, and the audiences have been loving it . I hope that you enjoy seeing films in our new home cinema and if you can find it in your heart and in your budget, please help us reach our goal!

When reaching out to invite new filmmakers and honorees from years past in preparation of the 15th edition of PIFF, the phrase “summer camp” kept coming up. Our cherished returning artists, many who gather here every year, form a special circle of campers whose
frequent presence has shaped this festival into what it is today. Each year, we see John Waters, Christine Vachon and Mary Harron—all
previous “Filmmakers on the Edge”—as was Todd Haynes (2003), who will be returning this June to join in the festivities. Rob Epstein
and Jeffrey Freidman, our “Faith Hubley Award” honorees in 2010, are back with LOVELACE. Jeffrey Schwarz (I AM DIVINE), Tatiana Furstenberg and Francesca Gregorini (EMANUEL AND THE TRUTH ABOUT FISHES), Cindy Kleine (ANDRE GREGORY: BEFORE AND AFTER DINNER),
Roger Ross Williams (GOD LOVES UGANDA) – these are just some of the returning artists who have now caught the PIFF bug.
As we welcome exciting new faces to Provincetown, like Harmony Korine, Matt Dillon, Ed Lachman, Neil LaBute and Lucy Walker, I can’t help but think that, in five years, they
will be amongst our faithful coterie of campers. And, speaking of returning campers, dynamic scholar and film critic B. RUBY RICH, joins us again this year to celebrate the
publication of her new book, New Queer Cinema: The Director’s Cut.
The consistency of the PIFF crew is a beautiful thing, but some change is inevitable: Executive Director Gabrielle Hanna is leaving her position after this year’s festival. As I
can’t imagine PIFF without her, I expect that she will be joining us from now on as a happy camper, enjoying what she has been so instrumental in developing.
Out here on the edge of the continent, the spirit of Filmmaking on the Edge is as alive and vibrant as ever. Please enjoy this exhilarating line-up of new independent American
and international film in this most magical of places, Provincetown.

Here’s how they work...
Screening venue doors open 30 minutes prior to each
screening. Pass holders will be admitted in the following order: Patrons, ticketed Festival Pass holders,
ticketed Sponsors, ticketed Filmmakers, ticketed Press
Pass holders. Thereafter, ticketed non-pass holders
will be admitted.
A friendly reminder: Other than Patron Pass holders,
you must have a ticket to be ensured of entry to a
screening. You must be seated 5 minutes prior to the
start of a film or your seat will be released. We strongly
suggest that Patrons, other Pass holders with tickets,
and Advance Ticket Holders arrive at the theater no
later than 15 minutes before the start of the screening. Patron Pass holders arriving late should identify
themselves to a PIFF staff member. Other Pass holders
without a ticket to a film should join the rush ticket line
and, if there are available seats, you will get into the
film based on your place in line.

Rush tickets will be on sale at the door 5 minutes prior
to each screening, and after all Patron Pass holders
(with tickets) and Advance Ticket holders have entered the venue. There is a
two-ticket limit per person in the rush ticket line.
Passes and tickets are nontransferable. Pass holder
seating is subject to availability. You must be seated
5 minutes prior to screening time to assure seating. 5
minutes before any film start time, available seats will
be sold to the wait list line and hard tickets will not
guarantee admittance. You must show your pass and
ticket to gain entrance as a pass holder.

As a part of our 15th anniversary celebrations, we’ve assembled a panel of
past “Filmmakers on the Edge” to discuss their work on (and over) the edge.
No strangers to controversy, they have all created ground-breaking, iconic,
envelope-pushing films that have redefined independent filmmaking and left a
lasting impact on the pop culture landscape. Join John Waters (Pink Flamingos,
Serial Mom), Christine Vachon (Kids, Boys Don’t Cry), and Mary Harron (I Shot Andy
Warhol, American Psycho), as they discuss their experiences with filmmaking on
the edge and its ever-moving line.

B. Ruby Rich designated a brand new genre, the
New Queer Cinema (NQC), in her groundbreaking
articles in the Village Voice and Sight & Sound in
1992. As a critic, curator, journalist, and scholar,
Rich has been inextricably linked to the New Queer
Cinema from its inception. Her newest book, New
Queer Cinema: The Director’s Cut, presents Rich’s
current thoughts on the topic, as well as bringing
together the best of her writing on the NQC. Join
us for a reading and book signing in the newly
renovated library.

HARMONY
KORINE
Once hailed as “the future of American cinema” by Werner Herzog, writer/director, Harmony Korine
arrived on the scene, at age 19, as film’s youngest credited screenwriter, with 1995’s Kids, With a
vast, varied body of work, he’s since proven himself as one of the most controversial, independent
filmmakers working today.
Born in 1974, in Bolinas, California, the son of PBS documentary filmmaker Sol Korine, Harmony spent his early years in Nashville, Tennessee, before moving to New
York City to live with his grandmother. A solitary teenager, Korine retreated into the darkness of Manhattan’s revival theaters, and sought escape through movies, devouring classics from Cassavetes, Herzog, Godard, Fassbinder, and Alan Clarke. A chance encounter with photographer Larry Clark led to an offer to pen a script
about his everyday life and, within three weeks, Korine had written Kids, a 24-hour slice-of-the-sex-and-drug-fuelled-lives of a select handful of Manhattan teens.
Directed by Clark and produced by Christine Vachon, Kids announced the arrival of a daring and provocative new talent.
Korine soon made the leap to directing and made a series of distinctive films that have all earned the mix of high acclaim and righteous disgust that has become
his critical signature: Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy, Mister Lonley and his 2013 “break out” Spring Breakers. The Provincetown International Film Festival is proud to
celebrate the daring career and singular talents of Harmony Korine.

JOHN WATERS is a prolific filmmaker, author, photographer and sometime actor. He is best known for his films, the content of
which have sometimes shocked and always entertained an international audience. Waters has contributed many essays and
articles to publications such as Newsweek, American Film and Playboy. His books include: Shock Value, Crackpot, Trash Trio,
Director’s Cut, Art: A Sex Book, and Role Models. He is currently working on a new book— an “undercover travel adventure.”

Luna) meets Marilyn Monroe (Samantha Morton), who invites him to her commune
in Scotland. There, they live with the Pope, the Queen, Abe Lincoln, the Three
Stooges, Buckwheat, Shirley Temple, Madonna, Sammy Davis Jr., and Charlie
Chaplin. A completely original film about the importance of individuality and
finding yourself.
James Franco, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens star in this wild film from
perennial provocateur Harmony Korine about four flat-broke co-eds whose spring
fling in Florida turns into a booze, drug and violence-fueled bacchanal. With Korine’s breathtaking style, SPRING BREAKERS is the rawest (and perhaps greatest)
movie about spring break ever.
