“The Pardoner’s Tale”
from Canterbury Tales
by Geoffrey Chaucer (d. 1400)
Monday, January 26
Chaucer is considered the towering figure in
English literature before Shakespeare. He was
a well-traveled government official who visited
Italy and became familiar with the works of
Dante and Boccaccio. The Canterbury Tales, his
masterpiece, is a collection of stories told by
a group of pilgrims on their way from London
to the shrine of Thomas Beckett in Canterbury.
By turns pious,
romantic, and bawdy,
these tales reward
readers with their
humor and insight.
In this month’s
selection, we read
“The
Pardoner’s
Tale,” a story about
riotous
youths
told by a seller of
indulgences.

by David Hume (1711-1776)
Monday, February 23
David Hume was a leading figure of the
Scottish Enlightenment. Never an academic
philosopher, Hume was rather a man of letters
and of affairs. He gave voice to philosophical
empiricism, a conviction that knowledge must
be based on direct
sensory experience.
His “An Enquiry
Concerning Human
Understanding,” is
a restatement in
popular form of
some of the ideas
Hume had put
forward in his long
work “A Treatise of
Human Nature.”

1000 Books Before Kindergarten!
Research shows that children get ready to read years before they start school so this is the first step in encouraging
your child to love books. 1000 may sound like a big number, but if you read just one book a night for three years, you'll
have read even more than 1000! So come into the library, pick up a kit (available at the Main’s Youth & Parent Services
Reference Desk or the Station Branch Reference Desk, and help your child develop a love of reading. They will even
earn prizes along the way. Registration ongoing.

Please Vote for Me
(NR) (58 mns) (2008)
Directed by Weijun Chen.
A third grade class in China is learning about democracy. To demonstrate the democratic political process, their
teacher selects three students, Luo Lei, Cheng Cheng, and Xu Xiaofei, as candidates to run for election to the

- amid intense parental involvement, name-calling, favor-giving, melt-downs, and some regrets. Are the votes cast
for the right reasons?
Discussion Moderator Joseph Leavy is Chair of Humanities for the Huntington School District. He and colleagues from several states have participated
in research with the Kettering Foundation and Hofstra's Center for Civic Engagement on the questions "Is democracy working as it should?" and "How
can we best teach our youth to engage in issues and deliberation to solve issues and inform policy?" Leavy lived in Taiwan from 1991 to 1994 and has
hosted Chinese exchange students at Huntington High School.
