March 2009 Volume 4, Issue 5 The Official Newsletter Of Our Visionary Under-Shepard, the Youthful and Dynamic Superintendent Tommie A. Murphy and our Sainted First Lady, Her Graciousness Missionary Doris D. Murphy Words To Live By ~ The Pastors Pen ~ Supt. Tommie A. Murphy The Consecration for Victory supernatural move of God in many of our lives. During the season of Lent, we are always challenged to sacrifice something that our flesh really desires in order to demonstrate spiritual discipline as well as gain victory over our flesh. Just as other calls by God to set ourselves apart from the world or our flesh and consecrate unto Him, this season should be considered another such opportunity for us to answer this divine call. As we do this our destiny of victory becomes imminent. Additionally, there are other points of significance we should glean from the experience. In Joshua 5:1-10 the children of Israel are in the promise land. A new situation develops. The miracle of their crossing the Jordan made their enemies hearts melt, neither was their spirit in them any more. Perhaps this is why there is no panic in devil’s camp today because there is no consistent Giving up something your flesh desires is: The rite of circumcision was absent for 40 years before it is reinstated. The true meaning of this act is shown in the word of God as a seal for the covenant that God made with Abraham in Genesis 17:10-14. There were two things that happened in the rite of circumcision or symbolically denying the flesh. First of all, blood was shed. In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. God’s faithfulness has never depended on the faithfulness of His children. He is faithful even when we aren’t. When we lack courage, He doesn’t. He has made a history out of using people in spite of themselves. Need an example? The feeding of the five thousand. It’s the only miracle, aside from those of the final week, recorded in all four Gospels. Why did all four writers think it worth repeating?...Perhaps they wanted to show how God doesn’t give up even when His people do… When the disciples didn’t pray, Jesus prayed. When the disciples were weak, Jesus was strong. When the disciples had no faith, Jesus had faith. Simply put, God is greater than our weakness. Foxes sometime in search of food would enter into the grape orchards and devour the grapes and spoil the crop. However, the little foxes were too small to reach the grape bunches so they would chew on the vines and it would kill the whole vine. Instead of the farmer just losing his crop, he would lose his vine which was more disastrous. Spiritually some things we do or allow that we might think is little or insignificant can also be disastrous for us. 1. Mix a juice spritzer. Combine your favorite juice (half of your usual amount) with plain or sparkling water. You can cut up to 85 calories per glass--and lose 5 pounds or more a year. 2. Pick up the cordless. Burn calories while you talk: Do the laundry (68 calories), set the table (85 calories), or water plants (102 calories). (Values based on a 150-pound person and half an hour of activity.) 3. Pop a piece of gum. Researchers recently discovered that chewing sugar-free gum all day increases your metabolic rate by about 20 percent. That could burn off more than 10 pounds a year. 4. Pay cash for treats. Anytime someone offers you goodies--and you accept--put $1.00 aside. Then give the money to your kids. When you literally pay for treats, you're more likely to say "No thanks." 5. Study the wrapper. At a quick glance, that candy bar appears to contain 220 calories. But a closer look may reveal that it (or a bottle of juice, bag of crackers, or bag of nuts) provides two or more servings--which more than doubles those calories. 6. Sip green tea before you walk. The caffeine frees fatty acids so that you burn fat more easily. And the polyphenols (antioxidant compounds) in green tea appear to work with caffeine to increase calorie burn. (If you have high blood pressure, skip this tip.) 7. Ditch diet shakes. The cut calories are only temporary; you just eat more later. 8. Pack a lunch. Dining out more than five times a week may make you eat more--nearly 300 calories a day--than if you dine out less frequently. 9. Dip your bread. Use olive oil in place of butter. It's healthier and may also help you eat less. In a recent study, dippers ate a total of 52 fewer calories on average than those who used butter. 10. Sprinkle flax on your cereal. High-fiber, ground flaxseed can help curb your appetite and eliminate calories. Add it to yogurt or muffin and bread mixes. Available in health food stores. Page 3 Volume 4, Issue 5 The Age of Technology New B ethel N ews By: Missionary Joyce Martin The Age of Technology New Bethel is embarking on a new opportunity to bring convenient tithing, offering and purchasing options to the membership. On February 1, 2009, we will have the ability to pay tithes or make donations online. By simply using the on-line credit card option you are able to complete these types of transactions from anywhere in the world through the New Bethel Church website. Just consider if you happen to be on vacation the week that your tithes are due, you would be able to utilize the new technology to complete such an urgent transaction online. In addition to the tithe and offering component those supporting the ministry will be able to make online donations. Purchase transactions for online merchandise such as CD’s, DVD’s, books and other offerings are also available using the new technology. With the ease of a major credit card or debit card these purchases can be made at www.shop.NewBethelChurchonline, though cash purchases are still available on-site for your convenience. You can’t beat the ease of use for record keeping purposes. We are riding the technology wave at New Bethel Church for your convenience. Our hats are taken off applauding “The Information and Technology Ministry” led by Minister Gilbert Banks for their diligence and expertise in making this futuristic resource available. Your information is secure. There is no need to worry. The I.T. Team has processes in place to protect your personal and financial information. A joyful heart is good medicine, But a broken spirit dries up the bones. (Proverbs 17:22) My Dad is Better than yours Three boys are in the schoolyard bragging about their fathers. The first boy says, "My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a poem and they give him $50." The second boy says, "That's nothing. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a song and they give him $100." The third boy says, "I got you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a sermon. And, it takes eight people to collect all the money!" Page 4 Volume 4, Issue 5 New B ethel N ews Asking God to Meet Our Needs Through For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. We’ve seen so far that prayer begins with praise. Before we come to God with our wants and our wishes, we need to come to Him with our worship! We need to cherish Him and love Him and honor Him for who He is! And once we are completely surrendered to His will, that’s when we are ready to say, “Give us this day our daily bread.” But some say, “Marc, I don’t feel right praying this prayer. Why should I ask God for my daily bread when I know very well that I have enough food in my house to last me for the next two months? How can I ask God for more bread when there are people in the world who don’t have any bread at all? I feel selfish!” As we study Matthew 6:11, we’re going to learn the meaning of this prayer. And we’re going to find out why Jesus wants us to pray this prayer. The first thing I want you to notice about “Give us this day our daily bread” is that it is a prayer of dependency. It’s about us saying “Father, apart from you, I wouldn’t even be here! You are my Provider. You are my Supporter, and I am here to declare my dependence upon You.” Deuteronomy 8:17 says “You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me." 18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.” In other words, “You have the ability to provide for your family, but where do you think the ability came from? God is the One who gave you that ability! God is the One who blesses you with good health so that you can provide for your family. And God is the One who blesses the company you work for so that they can pay your salary. We must never forget that everything we have and everything we need comes from God. Give us this day our daily bread is a prayer of dependency. The second thing I want you to see is that this is a prayer of sufficiency. It’s a prayer for the necessities of life rather than the luxuries of life. Notice that Jesus doesn’t say, “Give us this day our chocolate ice cream.” He doesn’t say “Give us this day our thick crust pizza.” This is a prayer for the basic things in life. This is a prayer for our needs, not a prayer for our greeds. Martin Luther makes a very important observation. He says that in Matthew 6:11, daily bread doesn’t just refer to food. It is a symbol for all the things we need for the preservation of our lives: Food, health, housing, employment, good government, and a happy marriage. In other words, praying for our daily bread means asking God to provide for our needs, no matter what those needs might be. Right now, the biggest need in your life might be the strength to make it through the day. You’re tired, you’re run down, you’re fighting a cold, and the daily bread you need is the power of God from on high! Or maybe the biggest need in your life right now is for guidance. “Lord, I’m stressed out! I need direction. Should I ask the boss to put me on a different shift? Should I step out on faith and apply for a job at a different company? Or should I just stay where I am until something comes along?” Maybe the Daily Bread you need is right here (the Bible). Maybe you need a word from the Lord to sustain you through the day. Philippians 4:19 says that “my God will supply all of your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Volume 4, Issue 5 New Bethel New s Page 5 Bible Reading SCRIPTURES TO ENCOURAGE & MEET OUR NEEDS The Word of God is alive. It is profitable for giving us understanding and direction in all areas of life. In times of pain, trouble, uncertainty, fear, sickness, suffering and most certainly death -- the scriptures are a lifeline for our troubled hearts. They give us hope. They bring us peace and comfort. They assure us that though in this world, we shall have troubles, we can persevere with hope for a glorious forever, in heaven with the Lord. He has promised it, to those who love Him and look for His coming. Is Your Heart Fearful? John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give unto you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; whom shall I dread? Psalm 56:3 When I am afraid, I will put my trust in Thee. Psalm 118:6 The Lord is for me; I will not fear. What can man do to me? Luke 12:6-7 Are not five sparrows sold for two cents? And yet not one of them is forgotten before God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are of more value than many sparrows. Do You Need Courage Today? Psalm 46:1-2 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea. Psalm 27:14 Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord. Psalm 31:24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in the Lord. John 16:33 Jesus spake, "These things have I spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world." Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. A decorative plate of oranges, green, yellows and browns you have touch all if not most categories of recommended food groups. Here is a fun, colorful and healthful plate. Remember, food should be fun so use vegetables that you love the most but below are some of my favorites. Spinach Fettuccini Ingredients • Salt • 1 pound spinach fettuccine (or, whole wheat pasta) • 2 carrots, peeled • 2 medium zucchini • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 2 tablespoons butter (optional) • 2 shallots, thinly sliced • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 cup frozen green peas • 1/2 cup dry white wine • 1 cup vegetable or chicken stock • Freshly ground black pepper • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan, plus some to pass at table • 1/4 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley, a generous handful Directions Bring water for pasta to a boil. Salt the water and add the pasta and cook to al dente, about 7 to 8 minutes. Use a vegetable peeler to make ribbons of carrot and zucchini. Keep the vegetables flat on counter and run the peeler the length of the vegetable. Drop the carrots and zucchini into the pasta water for the last 4 minutes of cooking time. Heat a medium skillet over medium heat with extra-virgin olive oil and butter. Sauté the shallots and garlic 3 to 4 minutes then add peas and heat through, 2 minutes, stir in wine, reduce for half a minute and stir in stock. Toss drained pasta and vegetables with the sauce, season with salt and pepper, and combine with cheese and parsley. Daniel 1:12-17, "Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. 13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants. 14 So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days. 15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat 16 Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse. 17 As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams". In Christianity, the good news or gospel is the message of Jesus or the message about Jesus, specifically his atoning death on the cross and resurrection. More specifically it is the promise and hope of salvation through the wrath averting death of Jesus for His people from all nations that Jesus provides. ευαγγέλιον (euangelion, "good message"). The gospel was the good news that runners carried throughout the Greek city-states proclaiming that the Saviour-King had ascended to his throne. This word is sometimes also translated "Gospel". Hence, the written accounts of the life and teaching of Jesus are generally known as "Gospels". The Christian message of good news is described in the Bible. It relates to the saving acts of God, centered upon the person of Jesus and his substitutionary death on the cross and resurrection from the dead. Its context is the storyline of the Christian Bible as a whole, which tells of the creation of humanity, humanity's rebellion against God, and how people from all nations are restored to relationship with God through the person of Jesus. A key theme of the Christian good news is that God offers a new life and forgiveness through Jesus. Jesus' teaching of the good news also relates to the coming of the Kingdom of God Our purpose is to also “Inform” readers of activities and events going on at the church. Lastly, our purpose is to “Invite” our readers to participate in the mighty move of God going on at New Bethel Church. Volume 4, Issue 5 New B ethel N ews Words To Live By Continued From Page 1 Page 8 “The Love of God” By: Supt. Tommie A. Murphy The Bible says that life is in the blood. People can live with their body organs damaged or removed but none can live without blood. Jesus sealed the New Testament covenant by shedding His own blood on the cross. His blood was pure and sinless blood. It was very precious. It was sprinkled on the mercy seat in heaven that we might live by faith. We are justified by the covering of His blood in our hearts. Secondly, pain was involved. The prophetic utterance in Isaiah reveals to us what Jesus suffered for our salvation. Isaiah 53:4 “Surely he hath borne our grief, and carried our sorrows, yet we did not esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.” In verse number 7, it says “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.” I could not resist the opportunity at this point to mention one of my favorite verses found in Hebrews 12:2 “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” The place of blessing and favor cannot be obtained in the weakness of the flesh there must be complete obedience to God for He is the One who will fight our battles. The thing God asked of Israel was for them to submit to Him and this is still a requirement for all of us. The enemy continues to dangle deception in our faces tempting us to believe we can continue catering to our flesh while fully expecting Gods blessing. With this mindset we succeed in breaking God’s heart while erroneously believing we shall receive His hand of blessing. The very life of every child of God is the death of self and the humbling and submission of our wills to God. Paul says in Romans 2:25, “circumcision or uncircumcision means nothing under the new covenant.” Please know that only Jesus can keep self and the flesh in the right place. 2. It was a place of restoration. The children of Israel encamped in Gilgal and kept the Passover right under the devil’s nose represented by Jericho. The Passover meant a time of worship and feasting a swell as a time of celebration. Saints some time get so involved in activities that they forget to celebrate. Our fellowship is in the Lord. The life of a child of God is not a long faced-sad one that resembles a horse. It is a joy to be a child of God. It is joy unspeakable and full of glory. The next day the manna ceased after they had eaten the old grain of the land. Never again would Israel eat manna again. They would now eat the fruit of the land. Forty years of miracle food ceased. Notice the pattern: the rite of circumcision and then the blessing. The pattern has not changed. We must put off the flesh and its works to enter into the blessings of the Lord. We recall the incident with Samson. After defeating the Philistines with the jawbone of an animal the blessing came in the form of water. The very weapon Samson used became a means of blessing. God has not left us orphans. In Romans 8:1, the Word says “There is therefore, now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” We are mandated to walk in the Spirit and not cater to the flesh. You will fail as long as you are trying to do it in your own power and resources. Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2) It is my sincere prayer that during this season the peace of God himself will sanctify you wholly as you set yourself apart for Him. Make your vow to God and be faithful to it as you position yourself for the VICTORY! You Are God’s anointed, Supt. Tommie A. Murphy Volume 4, Issue 5 New B ethel N ews Page 9 Family Wealth Question? What does the Bible say about paying taxes? In Matthew 22:17-21, the Pharisees asked Jesus a question, "Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying the tax." They brought him a denarius, and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?" "Caesar's," they replied. Then he said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." In full agreement, the Apostle Paul taught, "This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor" (Romans 13:6-7). Federal income tax, state income tax, local income tax, sales tax, property tax, personal property tax, capital gains tax - the list could go on and on. Statistics show that in the United States, April 15th, tax day, is one of the most stressful days of the year. The Internal Revenue Service is probably the most despised government organization. Similarly, tax collectors were not thought highly of in Bible times (Matthew 11:19; 21:31-32; Luke 3:12-13). As much as we hate taxes, as much as the tax system is corrupt and unfair, as much as there are far better things our money could go towards - the Bible commands, yes commands us to pay our taxes. Romans 13:1-7 makes it clear that we are to submit ourselves to the government. The only instance in which we are allowed to disobey the government is when it tells us to do something the Bible forbids. The Bible does not forbid paying taxes. In fact, the Bible encourages us to pay taxes. Therefore, we must submit to God and His Word - and pay our taxes. The most frequent objection to paying taxes is that the money is being misused by the government or even used for evil purposes by the government. That, however, is not our concern. When Jesus said, "Give to Caesar..." the Roman government was by no means a righteous government. When Paul instructed us to pay taxes, Nero, the most evil Roman emperor in history, was the head of the government. We are to pay our taxes even when the government is not God-honoring. We are free to take every tax deduction that is both legal and honest. We do not have to pay the maximum amount of taxes possible. If the government allows you a tax break - take it. If there is a legal way you can shelter some of your money from being taxed - shelter it. By all means, take the deduction for your children, your mortgage, your moving expenses, etc., etc. Again, feel free to take every legal and honest opportunity to reduce your tax burden. Illegal and/or dishonest methods must be rejected. Romans 13:2 reminds us, "Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves."
