Discover the lively capital of the Costa del Sol.
MÁLAGA ® SPAIN Discover the lively capital of the Costa del Sol. Explore the sunny gateway to Andalusia. Málaga is an intricately beautiful city built around the splendor of Spain’s Moorish heritage. Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the northern African coast, the city cherishes its palatial wealth. Alhambra, a complex of palaces, sits high atop a hilltop, affording panoramic views and a detailed study of incredible architecture, art and history. Malagueños are both proud of their spectacular home and tend to have a more relaxed attitude than the people in other nearby cities. Look for welcoming faces in shops, cafes and along boulevards. LOCAL CUISINE SHOPPING Shops in Málaga are often run by families, many of whom work together and thrive by focusing on a specialty or selling just a few types of items. Tapas are a way of life in Málaga. Trending internationally, these little plates have always served as a meal here. While hundreds of tapas exist, popular in Málaga are albondigones or large meatballs, espetos, grilled sardines on a stick, coquinas or clams in white wine and jamon, which translates as ham, but specifically means an aged, salted meat here. For a full, sit-down meal, try any sort of pescaíto frito. This may refer to dogfish, tuna, anchovies or even squid, usually fried in garlic and vinegar. The favorite wine here is Mosto, a sweet wine made from Muscat grapes. Drink it at or between meals or with dessert. Be sure to have the local sangria, too, served traditionally with red wine, brandy, fruit and spices. CURRENCY Spain uses the euro. Some major banks’ ATMs exchange money. Particularly beautiful crafts here include fans, which are folded, assembled and painted by hand with garden or folk scenes. Local ceramics are also handcrafted, painted and glazed. Look for functional and decorative dishes, tiles, wall art and religious icons. For swanky fashion, walk Marqués de Larios, a traffic-free promenade of luxurious national and international designers. Tipping is not common. Most stores accept major credit cards. MÁLAGA SPAIN PLACES OF INTEREST TOP 3 LAND DISCOVERIES 1.
