WORSHIP
From Father Hathaway’s Desk
Seven Sundays of Saint Joseph
This is the second of seven Sundays dedicated to St. Joseph
leading up to his feast day. During this extended opportunity to
meditate about this great saint and to pray for his intercession, we
remember today the virtues that he practiced in his ordinary life or
work. The life of St. Joseph was full of work and manly character.
Known as “the carpenter,” he taught his craft to his Son, Jesus,
who was also known as the carpenter. Performing his daily work in
the presence of Our Lord and Our Lady, St. Joseph reminds us to
turn often to Jesus and Mary as we labor in the midst of the world.
Our work should be carried out in a cheerful and friendly manner
with attention to the details of the task at hand. Punctuality, order,
and diligence imbued with prayer are the ways to make our work
an offering to God and to sanctify our day. This effort to imitate
the virtues of St. Joseph in our chores should help us to achieve
holiness in ordinary life.
In the words of Pope Paul VI:
What is crucially important here is the sanctification
which each person must acquire according to his or
her own state, and one which can be promoted according to a model accessible to all people. St. Joseph
is the model of those humble ones that Christianity
raises up to great destinies . . . he is the proof that in
order to be a good and genuine follower of Christ,
there is no need of great things—it is enough to have
the common simple virtues, but they need to be true
and authentic. (March 19, 1969)
The Holy Father’s February Prayer Intentions
Universal: That the Church
and society may respect
the wisdom and experience of older people.
For Evangelization: That
priests, religious, and lay
people may work together
with generosity for evangelization.

Come Cook with Our Saints and Celebrate St.
Joseph and St. Joseph’s Table on February 22nd
Learn how St. Joseph was instrumental in answering the Sicilian people’s prayers to overcome
a drought that was causing famine. To give
thanks, they promised to prepare a table of their
offerings in honor of St. Joseph, and to make the
food available especially to the poor. (Note: this
particular class starts at 11:00 am and ends at
2:00 pm.)
We will be making some of the traditional recipes
found on the table: Lentil and Rice Soup—
Minestra di Lenticchie e Riso; Anchovies in Tomato Sauce with Pasta—Pasta con acchiughe e
pomodoro; Bread made in the shape of crosses
using store-bought pizza dough; and Honey
Balls— Struffoli.
Leading this class is Kathy Vestermark of Italian
descent. The two-and-a-half-hour Saturday class
include hands-on instruction, kitchen safety tips,
a chance to sit down and eat what students have
cooked, and a take-home folder of the recipes so
participants can cook “saintly” meals at home.
St. Veronica Young Adults—Ages 20s-30s
Join us for a special 2-month program open to all
young adults in the DC area: "Scripture Study
on Relationships: Books of Ruth & Tobit" on Wednesdays (1/8 - 2/26) at 8:00 pm in
the Parish Hall after the 7:30 Mass. We are currently studying Tobit having just completed Ruth.
Both books offer many lessons that will strengthen your relationships and faith alike. And believe
it or not, you will get to know Jesus and the
Church better through these Old Testament
books. We will learn a fresh approach of listening
to God’s voice in Scripture for this
study. Optional fellowship at Applebee's will follow. Join us anytime.
On Saturday, Feb. 15, join us for Smithsonian
Tour Day, where we will visit several museums,
including seeing the World's Third Oldest Bible
(1600 years old)!
For more info, email Althea at [email protected], or visit our Facebook Group

A Message From LINK on Our LINK Dona on Weekend
“To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people
so that by all possible means I might save some.” 1 Corinthians 9:22 (NIV)
We live in an area filled with people from different backgrounds. In a Washington Post 2008 article, it
was quoted “Overall, Northern Virginia is 40.4 percent minority, up from 23.2 percent in 1990; the nation as
a whole is 33.9 percent minority.” What a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family! We are able to live
in culturally vibrant communities, teach our children how to live in a multicultural world, and we are able to
learn tolerance and respect for others. God wants every individual to know that he is loved and valued. Jesus
wants us to do two main things—Love God. Love people.
LINK is in the business of loving people, regardless of their circumstances. During the 2013 Holiday Program, we provided food for 1600+ families. Hundreds of volunteers came together to sort food, clothing and
toys, escort clients, and pick up donated items from schools, businesses, houses of worship, and homes.
LINK was able to provide food for 3 – 5 days for more than 7400 individuals, $44,105 of grocery gift cards,
more than 2500 gently used coats & clothing, more than 4500 new toys, and more than 100,000 pounds of
food.
LINK sincerely appreciates the many businesses, groups, and churches that conducted food drives, clothing drives and toy drives for our Holiday Program. While the list below is long, it is possible that within all
the chaos that surrounds these events that someone was overlooked. For this we sincerely apologize. LINK
is fortunate to have the support of many in the community and all contributions are truly a blessing—
Airbus, Allegra Printing, American Heritage Girls, Balmar Printers, Capital Area Food Bank,
Carrier Corporation, Carpathia, Church of the Epiphany Anglican, Classical Ballet Theatre,
Community Lutheran, COSTCO, Del. Tom Rust, Deltek, Fairfax County Park Authority, Fairfax County Motorcycle Police Unit, Federal Children’s Center, First Baptist Church-Herndon,

Society, Sterling United Methodist Preschool, STG, Inc., Technica Corporation, Town of
Herndon Employees & Turkey Trot, Toys for Tots, and W.I.N.N. In addition, we would like to
thank the many private schools and public schools in Fairfax County and Loudoun County who generously
conducted food drives, toy drives, and coat drives for LINK. The students, staff and teachers worked tirelessly to see that donations were successful and we are very grateful!
We appreciate our member churches and friends of LINK who put in hours and hours of time to put together a successful Holiday Program. Thank you to our LINK Board Members, Boy Scout troops, Girl Scout
troops, church youth groups, and so many others who helped in big and small ways!
Want to help out in 2014? LINK has several ways you can help.
Food Deliveries in February—LINK needs help delivering food to families Tuesday-Saturday of each
week. To sign up, go to: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/904044EA9A7292-link16.
Mobile Food Pantry—In 2013, LINK distributed more than 78,000 pounds of food to more than
10,000 individuals through the Mobile Food Pantry. The food is provided by the Capital Area Food Bank.
62% of the food went to Loudoun County residents and 38% was distributed to Fairfax County residents. To
sign up to help with the February Mobile Food Pantry, go to: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/904044EA9A7292
