WE ARE FAMILY - SP Choir Tour to Kwa-Zulu-Natal
Dear Parents, Staff and Students
This week, Mrs Blackhurst and I
enjoyed the privilege of attending the
annual South African Heads of
Independent
Schools
(SAHISA)
conference in Cape Town. The
conference was full of engaging and thought-provoking presentations and
discussions. We thoroughly enjoyed listening to presentations from such highly
-esteemed speakers as Dr Max Price and Professor Adam Habib and the
Dean of the Education Faculty at Rhodes University, Professor Di Wilmot. Not
only did they make us proud of our nation and its institutions but they instilled a
renewed sense of passion and pride in our school, Dainfern College. Dr Price
and Professors Habib and Wilmot demonstrated tenacity, empathy and insight
into our country’s varying yet current challenges, which they saw as powerful
platforms of learning in a global context. They also provided evidence that
South African universities are keeping pace with the world and are actually
raising their standards of research and output each year.
The time was affirming in that all our schools remain confident of their mission
and capacity to produce principled, empathetic and competent citizens of the
world. The complexities of this vision are real but not unique to the South
African context. Student voices are challenging us as they grapple to articulate
a way forward and communicate their discontent with the present frameworks
upon which we base our assumptions and expectations. The profession, as a
collective, is listening and remains selflessly determined to stay committed to
our students and their future in our country and in the world.
The collegiality experienced by exchanging ideas with colleagues was not only
affirming but indeed encouraging and invigorating. We both enjoyed the
opportunities of sharing various initiatives, hopes and dreams through healthy
debate and laughter each day.

JP Readathon
The JP Readathon starts on Monday next week. This is an annual focus on
the joys and benefits of reading. So why read? Celebrated children’s author
Roald Dahl wrote the following in ‘Matilda’:
All the reading she had done had given her a view of life she had never seen.
The books transported her into new worlds and introduced her to amazing
people who lived exciting lives. She went on olden-day sailing ships with
Joseph Conrad. She went to Africa with Ernest Hemingway and to India with
Rudyard Kipling. She travelled around the world while sitting in her little room
in an English village. So Matilda’s strong young mind continued to grow,
nurtured by all those strong authors who had sent their books out into the
world like ships on the sea. The books gave Matilda a strong message. You
are not alone.
Reading does change lives! Enjoy the opportunity to focus on reading!
Photographs: Friday 23 September 2016
Sports and cultural photographs will be taken in the Multipurpose Hall during
the school day on Friday 23 September. This year we are taking U9-Open
sports and cultural team photographs in normal school uniform. Therefore, no
specific sports kit is required for sports team photographs this year. In Grades
1 and 2 only the Junior Choir has a formal photograph – photos of all other
activities taking place during the integrated day are taken throughout the year
during the activities.
Individual photographs of pupils who have joined Dainfern College since
February will also be taken.
The College Shop: Lost Property sale
The College shop will be holding a Lost Property sale on Wednesday, 28
September, between 13h00 and 14h00.
All items that are not marked or where the markings are illegible will be going
into the sale. Please take the time to check Lost Property before the sale to
claim any lost belongings. Some of the missing items are pictured on the right.

We received notice that we were the
top South African school in the first
session of international Rock School
examinations held in June: what an
accolade! Congratulations to our
pupils and their teachers.
Last week our SP Choir went on a
performance tour of schools in
KwaZulu-Natal. We performed at
Umhlanga College, Cowen House
and Clifton in Durban as well as at
an old age home. We had rave
revues everywhere we performed
and the pupils and teachers had a
wonderful tour.
We started the term running and the
pace continues! On Saturday
morning the High School A Cappella
choir and Marimba Band will be
performing in the St Peter’s College
Sports & Music Festival and a
number of our pupils will also be
performing at Brooklyn Theatre in
Pretoria.
Next week, on 20 September, our
SP Choir will be performing at
Cornwall Hill in their annual Spring
Concert. This is a first for us and we
are looking forward to a new
challenge.
Thank you to all the pupils and
teachers who are working so hard
towards the music exams and the
National Eisteddfod, which all take
place this term.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in
everything
by
prayer
and
supplication, with thanksgiving, let
your requests be made known to
God; and the peace of God, which
surpasses all understanding, will
guard your hearts and your minds in
Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6 - 7
Our children are significantly shaped
and moulded by their experiences at
school.
One
of
the
great
contributions you, as a parent, can
make over these years is to PRAY –
not only for your own children, but
also for other students at Dainfern
College, the staff, and all aspects
relating to the school.
We have a Parent Prayer group that
meets weekly to pray over the
needs of our school community.
Everyone is welcome. The prayer
meetings take place every Friday at
07h30 in the meeting room behind
the Main Reception. If you would
like more information please email
me
