DiVERSITY MEXICO CITY // INTERNAL 2 1 1 MEXICO CITY & PEOPLE Mexico City is the capital and largest city in the country of Mexico. It is the most important political, economic, cultural and financial center in the country and a global city in Latin America. Located in the Valley of Mexico, a large valley in the high plateaus at the center of Mexico, at an altitude of 2,240 metres (7,300 ft), the city consists of sixteen boroughs. Its 2009 estimated population exceeds 8.84 million people, and with a land area of 1,485 square kilometres (573 sq mi), Mexico City is the most densely populated city in the country. 2 COLONIAS OF MEXICO CITY The Federal District is divided into 16 “delegaciones” or boroughs. 3 COAT OF ARMS OF MEXICO The city now known as Mexico City was founded by the Mexica, also called the Aztecs, in 1325. The Mexica themselves had a story about how their city was founded, after being led to the island by their principal god, Huitzilopochtli. According to the story, the god indicated their new home with a sign, an eagle perched on a nopal cactus with a snake in its beak. HISTORY 3 After landing in Veracruz, Hernán Cortés heard about the great city and the long-standing rivalries and grievances against it. Although Cortés came to Mexico with a very small army, he was able to persuade many of the other native peoples to help him destroy Tenochtitlán. DYNAMIC MEXICO CITY // EXTERNAL 1 ZOCALO The Zócalo is the main plaza or square in the heart of the historic center of Mexico City. The plaza used to be known simply as the “Main Square” or “Arms Square,” and today its formal name is “Constitution Square” (Plaza de la Constitución). 2 PALACIO DE BELLAS ARTES The building well known for both its extravagant Beaux Arts exterior in imported Italian Carrara white marble and its murals by Diego Rivera , Rufino Tamayo, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and José Clemente Orozco. 1 3 THE MEXICO CITY METRO (formally Sistema de Transporte Colectivo Metro or STC Metro) is a rubbertyred metro system that serves the metropolitan area of Mexico City (this includes some municipalities in Mexico State). It is the second largest metro system in North America after the New York City Subway, and in 2008 the system served 1.467 billion passengers, placing it as the fifth highest ridership in the world. [1] 4 MURAL BY DIEGO RIVERA Diego Rivera’s mural depicting Mexico’s history at the National Palace in Mexico City 2 4 3 RESISTANCE MEXICO CITY // YOUTH 1 TLATELOLCO MASSACRE The Tlatelolco massacre, also known as The Night of Tlatelolco (from a book title by the Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska), was a government massacre of student and civilian protesters and bystanders that took place during the afternoon and night of October 2, 1968, in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in the Tlatelolco section of Mexico City. It happened ten days before the 1968 Summer Olympics celebrations in Mexico City. While at the time, government propaganda and official media in Mexico claimed that government forces had been provoked by protesters shooting at them, much later official documents were found showing that the snipers had in fact been members of the Presidential Guard.
