Students also can bring Early Years Learning Centre Multimedia Learning Centre Middle Years Team Leader It has been a busy fortnight in Middle Years, with PLT 3 getting ready to go on camp to Marysville this week, and PLT3 getting organised to go in Week 8 to Campaspe Downs in Kyneton. Camps are always a great learning experience for our students, and we wish students and staff good luck and happy camping in the next few weeks. A big thank you as well to the staff who are staying back with students who are not going, and other staff members for their flexibility in regards to placing students and Yard duty coverage. Last Friday the Whole School Sports day was the big event at Warringa Park, with all students participating and enjoy a range of activities in hat were both exciting and tailored to students different abilities. Students loved the experiences, and a big thank you to Sports teachers and helpers who made it all happen. Week 6 is Science Week, and PLTs across the Learning centre are holding a variety of exciting, hands on activities, and student led experiences around the STEM Inquiry Units being taught in Term 3. Invitations have been sent out to parents in all teams, and we would love to see you here to see the wonderful work being done by our students, and have a look around your child's classroom and talk to their teachers. In Week 4, an exciting addition has been made to the MYPLT 2 play area. New equipment, including a Basketball chute and fitness zone equipment have been installed. This is a significant addition to the area, and students are already loving playing on the equipment during breaks, and in designated movement breaks with their teachers and ES staff. We hope to see you at school this week for Science week celebrations, and for the upcoming Book week and Literacy and Numeracy week celebrations in weeks 7 and 8. Andrew Knox, Acting Middle Years Team Leader Groups 10,11, 18 and 19 Groups 10,11, 18 and 19 had a fantastic time at camp. We had fun swinging on the giant swing, riding around on bikes and making our own pizzas with organic ingredients from the camp garden. The food was fantastic for all the meals and it was great to see so many students on their first camp. In literacy ‘Pete the Cat’ was rocking in his school shoes and all the groups were looking at who, where and what was happening in the book. We are all moving onto ‘The very cranky bear” where we are looking at when certain events of the book will happen. In numeracy we are learning about ordinal numbers and number order. Students are learning the language of first, second and third and how to position items in order using numbers as help. This week is science week and with many activities being offered throughout the week we encourage all parents/carers if possible to try and make it to an activity. With book week next week and literacy and numeracy week in week 8, we have a very busy and exciting time in all our classrooms. Until next time happy learning from groups 10,11, 18 and 19. Groups 22, 23, 24 & 25 Groups 22, 23, 24 and 25 have had an interesting two weeks making their own commercials. They have been given criteria to work off in order to make an advertisement of a product of their choice. It is related to building their ability to work collaboratively in small groups and express their feelings through their presentations. Students used a range of applications to form their commercials including IMovie, Green screen and Puppet Pals and camera roll. Students and staff left for camp on Wednesday the 17th of August and will be returning on Friday the 19th of August. Hopefully they are having a joyful time, and we know they will definitely need some rest and sleep on the weekend after the fun few days away. Monday, the 15th of August was the beginning of Science Week, with students involved in several science experiments around the school. We would like to dearly thank parents and family members who attended, Daniel, encouraging students to participate in Erin, the science activities. Tim, Chloe, Thanks, and enjoy the winter season. Kay, Alana, Benita, Katie, Anthony, Belinda, Brain, Tayla, Kylie, Sharon and Ritu Marg, Amy and Dean. Groups 20, 39, 40, 41 & 42 The past fortnight has seen a change in the play areas for Groups 39-42. We have had new fitness and play equipment installed, which has provided our students with more purposeful and engaging exercise activities which they are enjoying using. Our Reading focus on words that sound and look the same has continued, with a students learning about words with ending in 'ink' and 'ar'. In Maths, we are learning identifying about money, exploring patterns in counting coins, and identifying the features of Australian money. Last Friday was whole school Sports Day, and our students had a lot of fun participating in the many activities and provided by Sports staff in the Hall. In our Inquiry Unit 'What can we use to Create Art?' students have been experimenting with different modes of painting, including painting circles and using masking tape to define and paint within shapes. This week, we are doing our own 'Pendulum' paintings, which we are incorporating into our Science week activities as well. For Science week, our students will have an exhibition of this Terms STEM unit inspired paintings in the deck outside Rooms 39-41, which will start on Thursday. We are having an open afternoon on Thursday 18th August, and we would love to get parents to come and see the wonderful work we are doing! Anna, Carmen, Kerstin, Amy, Sonja, Kerryn, Andrew, Derek, Mel, Sue, Pamela and Emily Students have participated in fun experiences where they have listened to their heart beat and made blood from a concoction of fruit loops, marshmallows and coloured water. A number of students have began their transitions to Cayleys Road and have enjoyed exploring the campus and all the wonderful things they will be apart of next year. Later Years Warringa Campus The Later Years students have been learning about the heart as part of our inquiry topic 'How our body Works'. They have been learning where their hearts are and how they function. Science week has gone off with a bang, with the first science show presented by Oren on the oval shooting Rockets to the sky. Students have participated in their own class experiments this week from exploding coke bottles to balloon rocket races. Amy, Katie, Sean & Abby Bethany Road Campus This week we celebrated the last of our hockey clinics with Hockey Victoria! Students were fantastic throughout the three workshops, participating in hockey – octopus, hockey number racers and hockey games. Thank you Jess for organizing these workshops! Students have been participating in our own mini BRC Olympics throughout their PE lessons this term. Students have been setting and breaking records in shot put, discus, long jump and sprints in preparation for our Athletics carnival on September 12th. Well done to our record holders. We invite all parents to attend this celebration day at the V.U. Athletics track, Hoppers Lane, Werribee. Students will be encouraged to wear their designated class colour on the day (BRC 1 green, BRC2 yellow, BRC3 black, BRC4 orange, BRC 5 purple and BRC 6 white). We would greatly appreciate parent support on the day. Please send me a text if you are able to help out on the day (0477 772 626—you must have a Working With Children Check). Last week a parent survey was sent to all BRC parents to help us in our planning for an effective needs based human relations unit of work. We value parent input into this survey and would appreciate it if you could please complete and return it to the Bethany road Campus via your child by Wednesday 31st August. Upcoming events at BRC include: This week is Science Week! Our campus has been making balloon cars which will be tested on Friday with class winners going through to a final to be held on Monday at assembly. Thank you to Mareta for all her hard work organising this activity for our classes. In Literacy students have continued understanding of text types by participating in ‘text scavenger hunts’ where they were challenged to locate answers to questions regarding a variety of texts. to extend their In Numeracy students are continuing to explore measurement in the area of Time. We have been busy revising how to tell the time and solving problems involving time durations. As part of our focus on promoting healthy eating, students are now spending 10 minutes before every lunch break eating their food in class. We encourage parents/guardians to ensure that your child is provided with a healthy snack (e.g. fruit) and lunch. September 12th BRC Athletic Carnival October 26th – 28th Camp to Kangaroobie for Yr. 8 and 9 students On Monday the 12th of September BRC will be participating in Danielle Barclay a whole campus athletics carnival at the V.U. Athletics track, Acting BRC Campus Leader Hoppers Lane, Werribee. Students have been practising competing and running their events for the day. A reminder to make sure permission notices are returned as soon as possible. We have quite a number of permission forms distributed at the moment. Please remember to return any of the following applicable to your child: - Whole campus athletics carnival - SeeSaw (a new iPad application featuring students work) - Year 8 & 9 camp notices (there will be an information night held at Bethany Rd Campus on Tuesday 30th August from 55.30pm) - Human Relations form We trust that everybody has been enjoying the coverage of the - Parent Opinion Survey 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Students have had the opportunity - Year 10 Orientation Camp to watch and discuss some key events from the Games at Douglas McLeod-Dryden school. News From Douglas… Cayleys Road News… Philip Island Camp was a BIG hit!! This week students from Nancy’s Careers class together with VCAL and BRC , went to the Wyndham Council offices for afternoon tea and a chat about what it is like to work , how to apply for work and tips for interviews. On Tuesday we went to Wyndham city centre for afternoon tea and to talk some people about their work and what they do at Wyndham city centre. I was interested to hear about the pound dogs. I want to learn about different dogs and the lady was nice. Her name was Rachel . We have interviews on the 31 August 2016 at 9:00 am. I have completed my resume and cover letter. I want work at pound dogs in Werribee. Others people talked about different jobs. One job was for meals on wheels, another rubbish collection, the dog pound and food service. There was yummy cheesecakes and sausage roll. I saw VCAL students and Bethany Rd campus students. Ranka Maric. At Mambourin cafe I take the orders, wash dishes and I clean the tables. My favourite job at the cafe Is to deliver the orders to the customers. Come on down to the cafe on a Thursday and let me serve you. We are located inside the Mambourin sensory gardens just of Ballan Rd. We are open every Thursday 10am to 1:30pm. Roger Barroso VCAL News… Term 3 has been very busy with many students out on Work Experience. Kerry Roberts our Work Experience Coordinator his done a terrific job of organising new placements, liaising with employers and supporting students to settle in to their positions with a variety of employers and industries. We have 13 students currently out on individual work experience placements at industries including; Automotive, Hospitality, Warehousing Horticulture, Childcare, Sport & Recreation and Retail. The Wednesday Personal Development group is doing a great job completing Community Service at Manor Court Aged Care facility in Werribee. The students help with garden maintenance and kitchen and laundry work and are now seen as valuable team members. Thank you to Wendy & Evangeline for establishing this very successful partnership. Our Singapore visitors from the Rainbow Centre had the opportunity to see our VCAL students participate in an Automotive TAFE class and a Hospitality class and to see our City Campus. They were impressed with the vast array of opportunities our students in VCAL are offered and the work that our students do. Students from VCAL,CRC and BRC were invited to a Meet and Greet afternoon tea at Wyndham Civic Centre in preparation for their upcoming interviews. VCAL students were set the challenge of introducing themselves to 3 to 5 council representatives. Student Reviews Bunnings BBQ At 9:00 o'clock we start cooking sausages and onions. On Monday mornings the group goes to a place called SYN radio, we go there to work on what we are going to talk about on radio. When we are done we print out the scripts and the spread sheet then we continue to the actual studio. Last week when l went on Singapore at to talk I talked about a yearly convention called ComicMontague. Con. I spoke of about 5 minutes I said it was very, very fun and I will be going back next year.
