Fifth Annual Not-So-Silent* Auction & Dinner
Saturday, May 10, 2014
4:30 p.m at the MIHC
*Have you ever known the Irish to be silent, for even a minute?!
James and Carole Walsh, Founders
Maine Irish Heritage Center
I
t is difficult to list all of the
contributions that both Jim
and Carole have made over the
many years that they have been
such an important part of the
Maine Irish Heritage Center.
Crucial to the creation of the
MIHC, Jim served as a Board
member for many years, as well
as being an integral member of
the St. Dom’s School Reunion
Committees.
His
tireless
efforts in fundraising for the
MIHC resulted in a multitude
of donations and gifts for our
auctions over many years, and
he has continuously used his
impressive array of contacts in the community to advance the MIHC’s
mission.
Both Carole and Jim have contributed countless hours, days and whole
weekends to volunteering at MIHC events: weddings, open houses,
holiday fairs, concerts, and many others. Carole’s willingness to staff
bake sale tables, sell MIHC merchandise, and to help in any other way
is only overshadowed by her many contributions of her amazing Irish
soda bread, to which we have all become addicted! Carole has been
known to bake her famous bread for us even while she was recovering
from surgery, getting around on crutches!
Although Jim is no longer on the Board, he and Carole continue to
volunteer at the MIHC, and we can always count on them for their
support, their commitment of time and resources, and their love of our
building and everything that it means to them. We dedicate this event
to you, Jim and Carole, in appreciation for all that you have done and
continue to do for the MIHC!
W
elcome to the Maine Irish Heritage Center’s 2014 fifth
annual Not-So-Silent Auction. This event is our major spring
fundraiser, the result of many long hours of volunteer time spent in
planning, contacting local businesses and supporters, and making sure
that every detail is just perfect. We hope that you enjoy sharing your
evening with us.
Irish pubs for many years have been at the heart of Irish communities,
acting as grocer, draper, bookmaker, post office, and even undertaker,
as well as watering hole. Pubs have housed the celebrations of births,
marriages, deaths, birthdays, first communions and confirmations.
They are meeting places, places to cheer on your local or national team,
to celebrate their victories and mourn their losses. They are places to
relax and to socialize.
As the Irish spread throughout the world, they took the ambience of
the Irish pub with them. In any location with an Irish presence, the
pubs play every bit as central a role as they do in Ireland. In England,
Australia and here in the United States, pubs are a home-away-fromhome for the Irish diaspora, they are a place to receive information
on immigration, to learn of opportunities for employment, to find
accommodation and to connect with home. Whether in Ireland or
around the globe, the pubs of Ireland remain today as ever much more
than bars- they are hubs of Irish culture
We continue to be the “Not-So-Silent” Auction because, as we all
know, there is never a time when people of Irish background are
together that there can be anything approaching silence. We love to
talk, we love to visit with family, friends and neighbors, and we love to
have fun, all at the same time. Tonight’s auction, a combination of live
and silent items, promises to be a rousing good time. We hope that you
all have something to say, through enthusiastic bidding, and that you
say it early and often. Please enjoy the evening, the good company, the
friendly competition and the great values. Thank you for supporting
MIHC and helping us fulfill our mission.

•To protect, preserve and restore the historic landmark that was
formerly St. Dominic’s Church, a hub of early Irish Community
in Maine;
•To provide a center for Maine’s diverse communities to share
their cultural experience through education, programs and
community events;
•To house Maine’s Irish Genealogical Center, Museum, Archives
and Library, preserving the story of Irish history in Maine.
T
he Maine Irish Heritage Center wishes to offer our heartfelt thanks to
Michael Connolly, Ph.D., for his many contributions to the MIHC
since our inception. Michael, a professor of history and political science
at St. Joseph’s College in Standish, has been one of our strongest
supporters and we have benefitted immensely from his vast knowledge
of all things Irish, his contributions to preserving the voices of Maine’s
Irish past, his willingness to share his publications with us, and his
commitment to the mission of the MIHC. Michael is the author or
editor of several books, including They Change Their Sky: The Irish in
Maine and Seated by the Sea and The Maritime History of Portland,
Maine and its Irish Longshoremen, both of which he has generously
shared so that we could raise funds from their sales. Michael has also
served as a volunteer consultant and historian for many events and
programs at the MIHC, including the John Ford film festival. He is
an enthusiastic supporter of our progress, and we can always count
on him to be in attendance at musical and theatrical presentations,
lectures, and other celebrations of our cultural offerings. Thank you,
Michael, for all you have done to make the MIHC the center of Irish
culture that it is today!
P
reparing for tonight’s festivities reminds me of the many successes
that the Maine Irish Heritage Center has achieved over the past
year, all of which have come about due to the efforts of an amazing
group of volunteers and supporters. We are so grateful for the skills,
talent and hard work of a dedicated group of volunteers, Board
members, supporters and community members. Tonight’s event is but
one example of many people working together to create an event that
serves not only as a fundraiser, but also as an opportunity for friends
and family to get together, to catch up on the news and share some
laughter, to renew their commitment to their heritage, and to benefit
a cause that is dear to all our hearts.
While we are extremely grateful for the efforts of all of the people
who donate their time, their expertise, their resources and their good
humor to the MIHC, we would like to highlight the contributions of
three specific individuals who have been hugely instrumental to our
success over the past few years, and who have given us countless hours
of volunteer time based on their unflagging commitment to the MIHC
serving as a place of culture, scholarship, community and friendship.
Victoria (“Vicky”) Dylewski has a long history with the former
St. Dominic’s Church. A graduate of the St. Dom’s School, Vicky
returned to Maine a few years ago after a career in the military, and
blessed us with her impressive energy and competence by volunteering
at the MIHC, working tirelessly for several years managing many of
our maintenance tasks and making the building shine, both inside and
out. Vicky has things done before others even know that there is a
need, and she masterminds and executes such projects as removing
of all the pew kneelers, managing the kitchen for open houses and
other events (earning her the endearing title of “Kitchen Witch”)
and supervising the crews of assistants who come to help us from the
Cumberland County Jail pre-release program. Her affection for the
MIHC is contagious and she passes along her knowledge of its history
to everyone who helps her to keep it sparkling. We couldn’t do it
without you, Vicky.
Sean Patrick Michael Collins has been our volunteer building
maintenance and cleaning guru for over three years. We can count on
him to do it all, from shoveling snow (a herculean task this past winter),
to lawn care, to chipping ice from our sidewalks. In addition to all of
this regular maintenance, he is amazingly responsive to our frequent
emergency calls and, as a neighbor, keeps a watchful eye on the MIHC
at all times. We can also count on Sean to be on hand for our events
and fundraisers, leading the way during setting up and breaking down,
working with other volunteers to ensure that everything gets done.
Sean will teach a self-defense course this spring, a prelude to his dream
of opening his own school. Thank you, Sean, for all you do for us.
Will Dunlay first came to the MIHC when he volunteered to do an
energy audit for us about five years ago. He later left Portland, but
re-established his connection with us when he returned two years ago;
his re-appearance could not have been more timely! Will has been
our volunteer engineer consultant, leading the Building Committee
through the past year and a half as we acquired a state-of-the-art gas
heating system for the whole building. With his experience as Director
of Energy and Utilities at his regular job, he provided invaluable
expertise as we reviewed proposals, cost estimates, timetables, and
helped us to make the right decision about this very important leap
forward. It is through Will’s efforts that we can now announce that
we have heat in our entire building, which will allow us to use the
sanctuary year-round. We are delighted to have Will continue on
our Building Committee and to give so generously of his time and
expertise – thank you!
We hope that you have a wonderful evening. In addition to the lovely
array of items that you can take home if you’re the successful bidder,
please also enjoy the intangible treasures of the evening - old and new
friends, a good meal, shared memories, and lots of laughter.
As always, with gratitude and sincere affection,
Mary McAleney
Chair, Board of Directors

W
e wish to congratulate Matthew Jude
Barker, our resident historian and
genealogist, on his long-awaited book published
by The History Press. The Irish of Portland,
Maine: A History of Forest City Hibernians,
describes The journeys and
stories of a small group of
early arrivals who faced
hardship and discrimination.
The Portland Irish, a 19th
century community of domestics, longshoremen,
teachers, laborers, homemakers, shopkeepers,
nurses and policemen, grew into a powerful
statewide political force. Autographed copies are
available for purchase.
T
he Maine Irish Heritage Center
is honored that Governor
Joseph E. Brennan has named
the MIHC as the repository for
his archives. Governor Brennan,
son of Irish immigrants, was born
in Portland and served Maine and
the Nation for his entire life.
Governor Brennan was a key
architect of modern Maine’s
government. During his two terms
as governor he created the Finance
Authority of Maine; instituted the
Maine Education Assessment,
the first statewide standardized
testing of elementary and high
school students; instituted the first
Joseph E. Brennan
home care for the elderly program;
instituted the first seat belt safety laws; negotiated the first contracts with
the new union representing state workers; protected the water quality
and visual appearance of Maine’s most important rivers; controlled
health cost inflation through an innovative hospital cost containment
effort; greatly expanded programs to address child abuse. He was a
pioneer in strengthening OUI laws, established the Commission to
reform the University of Maine System, and successfully defended and
resolved the Indian Land Claim case.
We are grateful that the Governor has selected the MIHC to share,
protect and preserve his legacy for future generations to learn from and
by which they may be inspired.
A committee has been formed to lead the project. They are looking
for any and all public service or campaign memorabilia, photos or
vignettes. Nancy Brenerman is willing to collect these items. Nancy
may be reached at 207-797-9298 to learn how you can help. Financial
contributions are welcome as well.
Values listed in this program and on bid sheets are estimates only, and
may not reflect actual value. We have endeavored to describe items
carefully and correctly, but the MIHC provides no warranties with respect to the items offered. All items are sold as is and all sales are final.
Payment is expected before the items may be removed from the MIHC.
Payment may be by cash, check, or credit card. Large items may be left
at the MIHC awaiting a later pickup, as long as arrangements are made
with MIHC representatives. The MIHC does not provide transportation for auction items.
To bid on silent auction items, you must write your name, your bidder number and your bid on the bid sheet. Please note that many of
items have minimum bids and may be withdrawn if the minimum
bid is not met. Should the highest bid for a silent item be disqualified
for any reason, the next lower bid will be deemed to be the winning
bid. The silent auction tables will close from 6:15-6:45 and an announcement will be made several minutes before the tables close.
The live auction will begin at 7:30. Some items have reserve bids and
may be withdrawn if the reserve level is not met. The auctioneer is the
final authority for live auction item bidding.

energy, commitment and skills. Thank you!
A YEAR OF IRISH BREAD
The lucky winner will receive a freshly baked loaf of brown soda bread
every month for the entire year. Ann Marie Chandler will provide
the bread which has been made in her family for over 100 years. Her
grandmother, Annie Crowley Folan, from Barna outside of Galway
City, immigrated in 1910 bringing the recipe with her. Ann Marie, who
was named after her grandmother, makes this family recipe without
measuring just as her grandmother did. With two secret ingredients
it is a nice twist on the traditional Irish soda bread. You will not be
disappointed.
TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME!
Two Box Seats behind the first base dugout. Game information TBA.
Donated by Olympia Sports.
A LONG WEEKEND AT THOMPSON LAKE
Enjoy a long weekend, from Thursday to Sunday, at beautiful
Thompson Lake in Casco, Maine in June or September of 2014,
courtesy of Mark and Anne Duval. The cabin has three bedrooms, one
bath and sleeps 8-10 people. It includes a right of way to a beautiful
beach near a marina.
ROCKING CHAIR
DONATED BY THE FAMILY OF DAVID SOULE
David Soule’s oak rocking chair was given to him by one of his many
friends. The chair was one of David’s favorites; when he saw the chair
he imagined his relatives in Ireland sitting around the hearth with a fire
and a perfectly steeped cup of tea with either a scone or slice of Irish
bread telling stories. Take this chair home and you will hear the stories
and savor the tea.
CLIMB TO THE TOP OF PORTLAND HEAD LIGHT
This unique experience for 10 people includes a climb to the top of
Portland Head Light to see the interior of the light and marvel at the
spectacular view of Casco Bay. You may also enjoy a lunch of Portland’s
famous Italian sandwiches with $50 of Amato’s gift certificates.
SAIL ON CASCO BAY
Spend an afternoon sailing beautiful Casco Bay! Pete Clifford, will
host up to 4 guests on his Pearson 33 foot sloop, “Riparian,” which
is moored at the Portland Yacht Club. The date is flexible and will be
determined by mutual agreement. If weather on proposed day is rainy,
cold, too windy, or not windy enough, the Cap’n will allow the crew
to pick a new date. Note from the Captain: Flogging of the crew was
outlawed by the Geneva Convention in 1919, so the lucky bidder can
expect to be treated in a humane and respectful manner.
