D e a r
Ac t i v i t i e s
Directors:
I’m very interested in
getting regular exercise, but
I can’t do a vigorous workout. Also, I love to swim, and
I know we have a world class
facility on campus, but it’s
so far. How can I get there?
—Anita B. Moving
Dear Anita:
In last month’s issue we
listed several of the ways we
stay fit here at Stone Gardens,
including our new walking club
and the addition of Zumba to
our schedule twice a week.
We do have a world
class therapeutic water facility
on campus, and we’d love for
you to go!
The Peter B. Lewis
Aquatic Center (named for philanthropist and native Clevelander Peter B. Lewis, who
made the Aquatic Center possible) is located at the front of
the campus, on Cedar Road,
just east of the R. H. Myers
Apartments. It’s connected to
the main building, which is
connected to Stone Gardens,
so we can get you there without going outside. There are a
couple of steps you need to
take before you can go—
clearance from your doctor,
etc.—but they're generally not
difficult. Inquire at the nursing
office for details.
The Lewis Aquatic Center has Nautilus and other exercise equipment,
a large
therapy pool with heated water, and a whirlpool spa.
The large pool is designed for fitness rather
than recreation. Instead
of a shallow end and a
deep end at opposite
ends of the pool, it has a
deep side and a shallow side
which run the entire length of
the pool. This allows for various types of water walking
and exercise. There is a ramp
into the pool, and everything
about it is designed for accessibility.
Please let Sarah or
Noah know if you’d like to see
it before you decide if you
want to swim. Once you’ve
been cleared for swimming,
our Exercise Specialist Gloria
Brooker can take you on the
golf cart on Wednesday mornings.
Any exercises that we
do here at Stone Gardens is
designed with you in mind.
Whether it’s our walking club,
or exercise with Gloria in
the Ivy Room, we’ll never
push you beyond your
capability or desire. The
workout can be as vigorous or as mild as you
want. Sitting or standing,
you set your own pace.
We hope to see you at
one or more of our many fitness offerings!

We are accepting
donations of gently used,
hardback books for our library. We’ll take almost
anything, but have an
overstock of Fiction, and
are most in need of Humor, History and SelfHelp. Please direct book
donations to the Activities
Department.

Barbara Books Browns and Blocks
Congratulations to our
new Resident Council President, Barbara Drossin, and
Vice President, Alex Roth.
A Resident Council is
made up of and run by the residents of a long-term care facility, such as Stone Gardens.
The President and Vice President—residents elected by
residents—serve a two year
term. The monthly meeting is
an open forum for residents to
bring up concerns, discuss solutions, make suggestions, and
give feedback, all concerning
their quality of life.
Other than the positions
of President and Vice President, there is no special appointment or election to the
Resident Council. Once you
move into Stone Gardens you
are automatically a member of
the Resident Council. You are
invited and encouraged to attend all Resident Council meetings. This is a very important
tool at your disposal for enhancing your happiness and
making Stone Gardens your
home.
Our meetings are always scheduled for the last
Tuesday of every month.
(Watch your monthly and daily
schedules for any changes that
might occur due to holidays or
special programming.)

Our 2nd floor library is
getting a makeover and we’re
looking for more books!
If you weren’t aware that
we had a library, that might be
because it’s a room with a pool
table and a poker table, and a
couple of shelves of books. Beginning this month, work will
start to upgrade that room and
make it a dedicated space for
books and book lovers.
It should be completed
some time near the end of this
month, and the official Grand
Opening will be held on Tuesday, November 5th at 2:30 PM.
There will be much more
shelf space, and we are in the
process of increasing and upgrading our book collection. If
you would like to donate new or
gently used books to our new
library, contact Sarah or Noah
at 216-593-0484, or just leave
them at the Front Desk.
*****
As this goes to print, the
Cleveland Browns are 2-2, just
having beaten
their in-state
rivals, the Cincinnati
Bengals. On November 24th,
the
Browns
play
their
archrivals, the
Pittsburgh
Steelers.
On That Sunday, Menorah park will be hosting our
very own campus-wide Tailgate
Party!
Don’t worry. We will not
be in the parking lot. Our party
will feature all of the things that
4
make a tailgate party great—
entertainment, beer, brats (or
something like them), chips
and other assorted stadiumstyle munchies—but, it will be
indoors.
Oh, we’ll also be showing the game! Wear your
Browns regalia (or Steelers, if
you dare) and come to the Menorah Park auditorium to cheer
your favorite team on to victory!
Specifics will be forthcoming.
*****
Get to know your
neighbors! Every time a new
resident moves into Stone Gardens, we have a “Block Party”
in the area of the building into
which they moved. Everyone
living in that area receives an
invitation in their plastic box
outside of their door the day
before.
Please note the date on
your calendar
and try to
come if you
can. It’s wonderful way for
our new resident to meet
his or her new
neighbors and
feel welcomed.
We serve a little wine
and a little cheese, but the real
point is to be a haymish, welcoming community.
We have two Block Parties coming up this month, so
watch for your invitations.

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
Every month the
Stone Gardens Department
Heads
select an Employee of the
Month. Department
Heads
nominate people based
on the notes that residents and family members post on the
“Service With a Heart”
board located in our
front lobby, and from
their own observations.
The Employee of the
Month is publicly
recognized at a staff
meeting, gets their
name on a plaque, and
receives two movie
tickets. In addition, the
Employee of the Month
gets to choose a
“buddy” from the staff
who will also receive
two movie tickets.
September’s Employee of the Month
was Chef Chris Brockway.
Congratulations to
Jennifer and Sarah,
and to all of the employees who were
nominated!

Ask Barbara
By Barbara Drossin
Dear Barbara:
I miss my dog. I
wish there was something around here that I
could hug and would
lick my face.
~ Doggone Lonely
Dear Lonely:
Put some BBQ
sauce on your face
and sit next to Noah.
Then, just wait.
Dear Barbara:
When I play Bingo
I never have any
luck...no winning num-
bers. What can I do
about this?
~ B4 I Lose It All
Dear B4:
Stop
playing.
Save
your
money.
Soon you will be very
rich. This will make
you even happier.
Dear Barbara:
So many people
have great grandchildren, and I don’t. This
makes me very sad.
What can I do about
this?
~ Family Man
Dear Family:
What, your grandchildren aren’t great?
So, nobody’s perfect.
Dear Barbara:
Winnie the Pooh
had some wonderfully
good advice. Why don’t
we invite him to speak at
Stone gardens?
~ Teddy
Dear Teddy:
We couldn't bear
his advice.

DocumentShredding
Shredding financial documents that are no
longer needed is a good way to preserve your privacy, protect your identity, and give you peace of
mind. Documents that may contain personal information such as your address, phone number, bank
account numbers, social security number, and
credit card information should be disposed of in a
way that will not let others gain access to them.
These may include old bank records, paid credit
card and utility bills, and even old checkbooks. It is
recommended to keep most financial records in a
safe place for seven years, but you should check
with a family member or financial advisor.
If any Stone Gardens resident has documents
that they’d like shredded, just bundle them together
(a plastic shopping bag is fine) and drop them off at
the front desk. Our staff will take care of it. And, an
added bonus is that your shredded documents will
go into the recycling bin.
