PATIENT INSTRUCTION
NUCLEAR PERSANTINE PERFUSION STRESS TEST
Our camera used for Nuclear Stress testing can accommodate up to 400 pounds. On rare occasions, we
are not able to image some body types if the camera cannot move freely around the patient.
Our Nuclear Lab is located on our lower level. Patients will be required to walk up and down stairs in order
to get to the Nuclear Lab.
Please follow these instructions to ensure a high quality nuclear stress test:

Please shower or bathe the day of the test. Do Not apply lotion and/or powder to your chest.
Wear loose fitting slacks or shorts with a button down shirt (NO METAL SNAPS), a comfortable
bra, sneakers or walking shoes.
You may have a light meal (cereal, fruit drink), 2 hours prior to the test.
DO NOTdrink regular coffee/tea, caffeinated or decaffeinated beverage or smoke after midnight
prior to the procedure.
You will need to eat between portions of the test. Bring a snack (sandwich, fruit, juice beverage).

If you are a diabetic, please bring your glucometer.
Bring something to read such a book or newspaper.
If you have HMO insurance, your referral needs to be current.
The test is performed in the West Chester office.
Testing Procedure:
1.
The technician will explain the test, ask you some questions and have you sign consent and
insurance forms.
2.
An intravenous (IV) line will be started in your arm by the nuclear technologist or nurse. A
radioactive isotope will be injected into your IV and images (a type of x-ray) will be obtained. The
isotope allows us to take pictures of you heart.
3.
To prepare you for the next part, your chest will be cleansed, the skin will be slightly abraded and
EKG electrodes will be applied. This portion will take approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
4.
You will be given Persantine that will cause your blood vessels to dilate. Side effects of the
Persantine will be discussed before the test. Your blood pressure and heart rate will be monitored
closely. At the end of 6 minutes, another injection of isotope is given..
5.
Your IV will be removed and a final set of images will be obtained. This portion takes approximately
20 minutes. The test is the complete.
6.
Expect to be here for approximately 4 hours. This can vary with each patient.
IF YOU CANNOT KEEP YOUR APPOINTMENT, YOU MUST CANCEL 48 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR
SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT DAY. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN A $110.00 CHARGE.
PLEASE CANCEL NO LATER THAN 4 P.M. ON FRIDAY PRIOR TO YOUR TEST IF IT IS SCHEDULED
ON A MONDAY.

If you are taking Aminophylline or Persantin (Dypridamole), Theodur, Theophylline, Uniphyl,
Aggranox, please discontinue 24 hours prior to the day of your test.
If you are taking Trental, please discontinue 48 hours prior to the day of your test.
All other medications can be taken as prescribed the morning of the test.
