What films will play? This section lists
some of the main films we’ll play in the
next few months. Additional unlisted
films will also become available. Visit
our website for the latest info on what
films are upcoming.
When will films play? We determine
each Monday what main films will play
starting on Friday. On Tuesday, we set
the upcoming week’s schedule and then
update our website and our telephone
hotline. We’ll also send you a weekly
email, if you sign up at our website. (We
sometimes also book films more than
a week ahead of time, which we post in
the “Coming Attractions” section of our
website; however, those bookings are
only tentative and subject to change.)

Micmacs
France – 1 hr 44 min - Jean-Pierre Jeunet
with subtitles
The director of the beloved Amelie
brings his trademark whimsical style
back to the screen with this wacky tale
of a video store clerk who tries to bring
down two Parisian arms dealers. Jeunet’s
hyperactive imagination is applied to a
40’s-style caper film with startling results.
And it almost feels like a silent film, given
the sparse dialogue.
The City of Your Final
Destination
Please Give
UK – 1 hr 58 min – James Ivory
A young American academic tries to
persuade the heirs of a celebrated
novelist to allow him to write an
authorized biography. He then turns up
uninvited on the family’s doorstep in
Uruguay to make his case. This
sophisticated drama about love and
literary matters is skillfully presented by
the “Merchant-Ivory” team of James Ivory,
director, and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, writer.
With Anthony Hopkins and Laura Linney.
USA – 1 hr 31 min - Nicole Holofcener
PLEASE GIVE is writer/director Nicole
Holofcener’s perceptive and devastatingly
funny take on modern life’s contradictions, good intentions and shaky moral
bearings. Set in New York, the primary
story is about a family that buys an adjoining apartment from an elderly woman.
But they can’t take possession until she
passes away. This tone-perfect film presents a subdued, almost Rohmer-like morality tale. With Catherine Keener, Amanda
Peet, Oliver Platt and Rebecca Hall.
Mother and Child
Exit Through the Gift Shop
USA – 2 hr 6 min – Rodrigo Garcia
Three women’s lives share a common
core: they have been profoundly affected
by adoption. Rodrigo Garcia’s reputation
as a writer for women will increase with
MOTHER AND CHILD, an insightfully
observed and exceptionally acted
ensemble piece. In particular, it spotlights
wonderful performances by Naomi Watts,
Annette Bening and Samuel L. Jackson.
The cast also includes Kerry Washington,
Jimmy Smits, David Morse, and Amy
Brenneman.
USA/UK – 1 hr 26 min – Banksy
This film by the elusive graffiti artist
Banksy was the hottest ticket at the
2010 Sundance Film Fest. Most art
documentaries are dull, glowing tributes
to their subjects. Not so with EXIT, a
raucously entertaining romp through
the contemporary art world, which folds
back on itself to examine the wouldbe filmmaker. This postmodern lark
could be a whole new subgenre: the
prankumentary.
MAIN ATTRACTIONS
Coco Chanel and
Igor Stravinsky
That Evening Sun
The Kids are All Right
France – 1 hr 58 min - Jan Kounen
with subtitles
This French drama depicts the brief and
tumultuous affair between these two
famous artists. Following on the heels
of Coco Before Chanel, the movie is like
the next chapter of a very handsome
book. Beautifully shot with robust visuals
that are often set to Stravinsky’s music,
COCO AND STRAVINSKY is a pleasure.
USA – 1 hr 50 min – Scott Teems
Hal Holbrook stars as an aging Tennessee
farmer who, frustrated with being
confined to a nursing facility, breaks
out and walks all the way home, only
to discover that his son has leased the
farm to another family. Things then turn
nasty. Holbrook carries this atmospheric
regional film as an irascible old
curmudgeon who will not go gentle into
that good night.
Wild Grass
Get Low
Limited Engagements
France – 1 hr 53 min – Alain Resnais
with subtitles
Master director Alain Resnais, at the
ripe age of 87, continues his career-long
adventure in filmmaking with this playfully
flamboyant melodrama. A lost red wallet
is found, which leads to a freewheeling
network of people. This engaging film
explores chance and middle-age longing
in a subtle and amusing fable of morals
and manners. With Sabine Azema.
USA – 1 hr 42 min – Aaron Schneider
Robert Duvall shines as a back woods
coot who decides to throw a funeral party
for himself – before he dies. Set in the
Depression, the film has the feel of an
American classic. Bill Murray is excellent
as a slightly shady (what did you
expect?) funeral director. With a mix of
sly humor, homespun grace and affecting
poignancy, GET LOW casts an irresistible
spell. A real treat.
C O U N T Y T HEATER.ORG
USA – 1 hr 44 min – Lisa Cholodenko
Two teenage children get the idea to
seek out their unknown birth father
and introduce him to their two mothers
(Annette Bening and Julianne Moore).
Once the donor (Mark Ruffalo) is found,
household dynamics quickly become
scrambled and confused. A crowdpleasing, feel-good comedy for an era in
which the very definition of “family” is up
for grabs.
We try to play each of our Main
Attractions films for a full multi-week
run. Sometimes, however, we are unable
to play a film in a timely or complete
way, and it becomes a question of either
squeezing them in or not playing them at
all. We then often schedule those films for
a couple of mid-week screenings, called
Limited Engagements. Make sure that you
sign up for our weekly email blast, so that
you don’t miss these short, last-chance
screenings.

Sabrina
From the late 1960s to the early 1980s, a new
generation of young filmmakers came to prominence in America. Coppola, Scorsese, Kubrick
and others led Hollywood into an artistic revival
that embraced the ethos of the times. These
directors embraced a gritty realism and a darker world view. While many of the films they
made were still part of the studio system, the
subject matter and styles they introduced set
them apart from the studio traditions. These
influential films return with all of the edge and
bite they had when they were first released.
1954 – 1 hr 53 min – USA – b/w – 35mm
Paramount – d: Billy Wilder – w/Audrey
Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, William Holden
The charming Cinderella story of two rich
brothers and the chauffeur’s daughter Sabrina.
Bogart is all work and Holden is all playboy,
but when Hepburn returns from Paris all
grown up and glamorous, both fall under her
spell. (You can see one of Hepburn’s dresses
from the film, designed by Edith Head, in the
James A. Michener Art Museum exhibit, Icons
of Costume: Hollywood’s Golden Era and
Beyond.)

Jaws
Some Like It Hot
1975 – 2 hr 4 min – USA – color – 35mm
Universal – d: Steven Spielberg – w/Roy
Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss
Have you seen this film on the big screen?
Now is the time with the 35th anniversary
of its release. When a great white shark
terrorizes the townspeople of Amity Island, a
police chief, a grizzled shark hunter, and an
oceanographer set out to kill it. Director Steven
Spielberg invented the summer blockbuster
with this white-knuckle thriller. Introduced by
Rick Zengolewicz, local JAWS enthusiast and
memorabilia collector.
1959 – 2 hrs – USA – b/w – 35mm – United
Artists – d: Billy Wilder – w/Jack Lemmon,
Tony Curtis, Marilyn Monroe
Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis star as a pair
of musicians who go on the run after accidentally witnessing a mob massacre. But how
can they hide? Dress as women and join an
all-women’s band, of course! And then things
really heat up with the arrival of Marilyn Monroe - the band’s curvy, blond, ukulele-playing
singer. This legendary comedy was voted AFI’s
#1 Comedy of All Time.

Hollywood Classics
35mm or HD Digital?
Yes, we are 35mm purists and we show
classic movies in the original 35mm film
format, if we can. However, sometimes films
are not available in 35mm or the prints are in
terrible shape with scratches, bad color and
unacceptable sound. What then?
Fortunately, great strides have been made in
digital technology and sometimes the quality
of a movie in HD Digital is comparable to
35mm or even better. That makes HD Digital
a viable option. Only a few classic films are
currently available in HD Digital, though, so
this is still only a limited alternative.
So, what’s the bottom line? We’ll bring you
classic movies in the best possible format.
Our default choice is 35mm film, but if the
HD Digital format is better, then we’ll go
with digital. We list the chosen format in the
credits above and on our website, so you’ll
know which format we’ll be screening. (One
caveat, though: if a print is booked and listed
in 35mm and it arrives in terrible shape, we
reserve the option to jump to digital. So, check
our website before you come to the theater to
get any late breaking news on the presentation
format.)

Raging Bull
1980 – 2 hr 9 min – USA – b/w – 35mm
United Artists – d: Martin Scorsese – w/
Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Cathy Moriarty
Robert De Niro won an Oscar for his portrayal
of boxer Jake LaMotta in Martin Scorsese’s
widely acclaimed masterpiece, which paints
a raw portrait of a tormented soul unable to
control his violent outbursts. Marked by De
Niro’s powerful performance and Scorsese’s
gritty, black-and-white realism, the film also
launched the Hollywood career of Joe Pesci.

Laura Hunt has been murdered, and as New

A masterpiece of suspense with a large

Hitchcock at the top of his game. Robert
