FOUNDATION DEGREE
IS A UNIVERSITY LEVEL
QUALIFICATION.
Foundation degrees involve two years
of study. It is similar to an HND but the
awarding body is the university. With
this qualification you are able to seek
employment at the end of your two
years, or you can enter the final year of
an Honours degree to be awarded the
full BA or BSc.
HIGHER NATIONAL
DIPLOMA
A Higher National Diploma is a
work-related course. A HND takes two
years to complete and is generally
equivalent to second year of a university.
Awarded by BTEC Pearsons (Edexcel),
they are usually worth 240 credits and
you can progress to University for a top
up to degree qualification.
HIGHER NATIONAL
CERTIFICATE
A full-time HNC takes a year to complete
or usually over two years part-time. Many
HNC courses cover the same subjects as
an HND, but an HNC is one level below
an HND. HNC’s are available in a wide
range of subjects and a great entry point
to Higher Education, often completed
alongside employment.
TUITION FEES
TOP UPS
Top ups are the final year of a degree
course to give you the full BA or BSc
degree. These can be delivered at
University or at Higher Education
Colleges. Depending on your HND or
Foundation degree and the top up you
decide on, this could be one year or
two years in length. It depends on how
closely your qualification matches up
with the top up degree qualification.
FAST TRACK DEGREES
Fast-Track degrees are usually completed
within two years. The big advantage is
that you get a full BSc or BA (awarded by
a University) in just two years. Fast-Track
courses require dedication as they
run into the summer months and
demand a high level of maturity. These
courses will save you money and you
achieve the qualification quickly. Ideal,
if you are considering a GAP year!

There are three main types of
accommodation available:
•

the security and home-from-home
appeal of a room in a family
home. Host family accommodation
typically includes breakfast, evening
meal and a couple of loads of washing
per week.
•
SELF-CATERING IN A FAMILY HOME:
students have their own bedroom and
live within a family home but are
self-sufficient and cook for themselves.
HOMESTAY
Cost: approximately £120 per week,
including bills.
This is the ideal chance for our
international students to learn about
British family life, while practising their
English. Living as part of a family, you
will have a single room in a comfortable
home. Breakfast and dinner during the
week and all meals at weekends are
provided. There may be other students
living in the house, but they may not be
of the same nationality. Payment is made
direct to the host family, by arrangement.

Cost: approximately £95 per week,
including bills.
RENTED
ACCOMMODATION
Cost: approximately £250-£350 per
month, excluding bills.
If you’re used to living independently,
you may prefer to live in rented
accommodation. You can share a
house or flat with other students and
be responsible for your own cooking,
cleaning and paying the bills.
For more information on accommodation
available to SGS students, please email
[email protected] or
telephone 01453 761173.
STUDENT LIFE AT SGS | Accommodation
ACCOMMODATION
If you prefer to do your own cooking and
live more independently, this may be
your best option. You’ll have the support
of a host family when you need it, but
you’ll usually share a separate kitchen
and bathroom with other students. Bills
are included, so budgeting is easy, and
you pay your host family directly, by
arrangement.

Jonathan left the University of Liverpool due to

an ideal venture for anyone looking to further their
Higher Education.

and has demonstrated a high level of commitment
and dedication to his HE studies. Jon takes every
opportunity to support and raise funds for this charity
and last June we held our first Higher Education

support his charity. Jon completed his studies at SGS

“SGS College provided a laid back, yet professional
approach to Higher Education. The quality of
the lectures is excellent, and in the classroom
environment you get an extremely personalised
University experience. On our course we all
developed a strong relationship with all of our
lecturers. The approachability of all the staff
was a strong feature of SGS and meant that as
individuals we all received the help we needed whilst
developing the necessary self-directed learning skills.
The College provides plenty of enjoyable
opportunities for all learners to accentuate their
Professional Development, and also events and travel
opportunities of tremendous value.
The course appealed to me on paper because
I could complete two years of study and still receive
certification, with the option of topping up at the
University of Gloucestershire for the full degree
if i was healthy. But looking back it the nurturing
environment and overall community within SGS that
is why I would recommend it for any learner.”

recognises
SGS facilities as
‘World Class’
SGS College received high praise
for its training facilities at the WISE
Campus from both Georgia’s Rugby
World Cup squad and the RWC 2015,
who recognised the facilities as “World
Class”.
The College’s grounds team tirelessly
perfected the training pitch up until the
team’s arrival on September 15th and
received an impressive score of 97%
for its pitch test, which was the highest
score of all twenty eight training pitches
used for the Rugby World Cup 2015.
The report noted that the pitch was in
“excellent condition.”

Over the ten days that the team was
based at the College the side also made
use of the brand new purpose built
sporting excellence facility, which was
officially opened by Bristol Rugby star,
Gavin Henson, when the Webb Ellis Cup
visited the College, as part of the Rugby
World Cup Trophy Tour. The facility
boasts possibly the best sports facilities
for 16-19 learners in the country and our
Higher Education students benefit from
these facilities.
SGS invested in the training pitch
knowing that after Georgia’s visit the
students would benefit from the
top-class playing surface. In addition,
the College also gets to keep a lot of
training equipment such as the custom
SGS/Rugby World Cup 2015 post and
flag protectors, which will now be used
for every home game, leaving a tangible
legacy and reminding everyone of the
events of the Rugby World Cup 2015
at SGS.

The course will provide you with high levels
of creative thinking, technical, intellectual
and communication skills (visual, written and
verbal): the essential toolkit necessary to
becoming a successful lens-based Practitioner.
The world of professional photographic
practice is complex and competitive and our
course aims to enable you to make informed
choices about your developing practice in this
area.
FREEPHONE: 0800 0567 253
|
It is vital that you, as emerging Practitioner,
engage with debates, research, historical
precedents and contemporary contexts
in order to come to a personal position
concerning your ambition and vocational
aspiration as a lens-based professional.
You will be introduced to a range of broad
creative processes, as well as subject-specific
photographic techniques and processes
through workshop activities, which will focus
on the development of practical as well as
cognitive skills. You will be encouraged to
underpin your developing practice through
the exploration and discussion of your ideas.
It is expected that you will develop a primary
focus area within Photography (e.g. editorial,
documentary, fine-art based), but will nurture
additional interests to feed your practice. By
the end of year one you will have begun to
develop an individual creative identity as a
photographer. This identity will be built upon
in the subject specialist modules of year two
which will encourage increasingly autonomous
and individually-focused learning.
The continuing development of your creative
practice will be explored and developed
through subject specialist modules, but you
will also undertake shared modules (with
FdA Graphic Design and FdA Fashion and
Textiles students) that require you to research
and engage with core design processes,
professional design contexts and the wider
contextual environments in which you are
working as a Practitioner. This will broaden
your understanding of what it is to be a
Photographer and give you access to a
broader foundation of core skills to feed
your photographic practice.
Organised visits to galleries, museums,
workshops and other cultural sites of local
national and international importance will
further underpin the development of your
personal creative practice.

year to ‘top up’ your Foundation Degree into
a full BA. From this you could then progress
onto postgraduate study.
Possible career opportunities include working
as a Commercial or Freelance Photographer

the application of broad creative skills e.g. in
the education, design or museum and gallery
sectors.
