May is my birthday month and I am
very happy with it. Lilacs, my favorite
flower, are always in bloom for my birthday as are many others. I did not expect or
want anything different for my birthday
this year. A meal out and a whole day of
Bingo. That’s enough for me.
First we went to breakfast and I had my
favorite of one blueberry pancake, one egg
and one slice of bacon. Cliff and Rod were
with us and we were a hilarious group,
finding fun in everything this happy day.
Then we were off to Bingo.
We were lucky enough to find near
parking at our favorite Bingo spot and I
noticed a sign reading, “Spectacular
Events Today.” That was good enough for
me. I was ready to have some fun.
The very first game was a “spectacular” as after the winner was called, a second chance was announced for a second
winner. This could be a very exciting day.
The third game was another “spectacular,”
It was a double Bingo, but a first Bingo
was paid half the winnings, while the second Bingo got the full amount. I was on
for that game so was really excited.
During the game before intermission,
Rod got so excited he got hiccups and we
were all nearly hysterical with laughter.
Someone else won and his hiccups
stopped, but we were still in a delightful
mood.
After intermission Kate was hot. She
won the first game, which got us really
going and was on for the second. Then
Cliff won an on-the-way game, which
made us really happy.
“It’s my birthday,” I said, loud enough
for many people to hear. “It’s time I won
one,” then giggled for my rhyming phrase.
But no more wins came our way and
we still went away happy, knowing I’d
had about the best birthday ever. We went
on to dinner at which time everyone had a
gift for me. Cliff had got a book I have
been wanting—a new Harlen Coben
novel. His novels are so complicated I am
tempted to write things down in a notebook.
Kate gave me a year’s worth of movie
tickets, which I will treasure and use
wisely.
Rod came last and he presented me
with a jeweler’s black velvet box that I
was tempted not to open to prolong the
surprise. But they all told me to “open it,”
“open it.” And so I did, to discover the
most beautiful bracelet I had ever seen. It
was studded with rubies and diamonds
and slipped on my arm like it had been
made for that exact spot.
“Oh, Rod,” I said breathlessly. “It’s so
beautiful. I can’t thank you enough. However did you know it’s exactly what I’ve
been wanting?”
He put his arm around my shoulders,
took a good long look at me, gave me a
kiss and said, “I guess I know my girl.
Happy, happy birthday.”

Inside Out Day
Mark Twain was once invited to be the
13th guest at a dinner party. He went to
the dinner despite a superstitious friend’s
warning. Twain reportedly said, “It was
bad luck. They only had food for 12.”
Beware, dear readers. Friday the 13th can
only occur in months starting with Sunday
and this month did so. In fact this month contains the only Friday the 13th in 2016. If you
believe that this day is unlucky, then you suffer from paraskevidekatriaphobics. Belief
that the number 13 is unlucky is the most
common Western superstition. Some people
refuse to go to work on Friday the 13th; some
won’t dine in restaurants; many wouldn’t
think of getting married on that date. More
than 80% of high-rises lack a 13th floor. In
the United States alone, between 17 and 21
million people dread that date to the extent
that it can be officially classified as a phobia.
Why is Friday, and not Tuesday or Monday,
associated with unlucky 13? Some say Friday’s bad reputation dates to the Garden of
Eden when Eve tempted Adam with forbidden fruit and caused them to be ejected from
Paradise. Tradition also holds that Noah’s
great flood began on Friday; and, of course,
Friday was the day of the week on which
Christ was crucified.
On the other hand, ancient Egyptians
thought the number 13 was lucky because
they believed that the 13th stage of life was
related to the afterlife. In modern day China
the Mandarin word for thirteen is shisan and
it means vibrant, bold; so Friday the 13th is
a great day to try new things. In the United
States, businesswoman Mary Kay Ash believed thirteen was a very lucky number so
she founded her company on Friday, September 13, 1963. The Mary Kay headquarters has thirteen floors and thirteen passenger
elevators. If you also believe Friday the 13th
is good luck you are said to hold a counter
belief. According to a University of Pennsylvania professor, people with counter beliefs
defiantly use them for good fortune and this
specifically applies to players of bingo and
other games of chance. That would be us,
folks. My husband and I love to gamble on
Friday the 13th. That being said, here are
some ways to hedge your bets for only good
luck on that auspicious day. First, carry three
keys on your keychain to summon wealth,
health, and love. Second, wear red underpants as this color will bring you more luck
than others. Third, forget cleaning. It’s bad
luck to use a broom, change bed sheets, flip
the mattress, or do laundry on that day.
Lastly, wear your clothes inside out. I love
that one because it would be so much fun to
attend a bingo on Friday 13th where everyone did this, even the workers. Bingo managers, are you listening? Until next month,
may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you
dance out the door with dollars. Win big. And
don’t forget. The first Friday 13th of the year
is Blame Someone Else Day. If you don’t
win at bingo, you can blame someone else
for your losing session. I like it. E-mail me a
pic of you at bingo wearing inside out clothes
via [email protected]. However, I do not want to see you in your red
undies. I’ll take your word for it.

Can you direct me to some resources
for my hearing impaired mother? She
doesn’t realize her hearing has gotten as
bad as it has, so I’m looking for some affordable ways to help. Any suggestions?
Loud Talker
Dear Loud,
There are more 31.5 million Americans
today that have hearing loss (two-thirds of
whom are over age 55) but less than half
ever seek treatment. Here are some tips
that may help.
Hearing Loss
Being aware of hearing loss as you
grow older is important because impaired
hearing can have a negative impact on
your quality of life. In fact, studies show
that older people with hearing impairment
often withdraw, become depressed and
may even die before their time. Because
hearing loss usually develops over years,
many people aren’t aware of the extent of
their loss until family or friends bring it to
their attention. Here’s a simple test to help
your mom see where she stands:
• Does she have trouble hearing over the
telephone?
• Does she listen to TV at a high volume
level?
• Does she frequently have to ask others
to repeat themselves?
• Does she have difficulty with understanding people in groups or noisy situations?
• Does she have difficulty understanding
women or young children?
• Does she have trouble knowing where
sounds are coming from?
• Is she unable to understand when someone talks to her from another room?
• Does she avoid family meetings or social
situations because she “can’t understand”?
If she answered yes to three or more of
these questions she may have a hearing
problem and should see an otolaryngologist, a doctor who specializes in ear, nose
and throat disorders (see www.entnet.org
to locate one in your area), or an audiologist (www.audiology.org) for a hearing
evaluation.
Hearing Solutions
Depending on her hearing problem
there are various devices or treatments that
can help. Some possible solutions include:
• Hearing Aids: Recent advances in design
and technology have dramatically improved hearing aids over the past few
years. She should work with an audiologist to find the right kind. Also, ask about
having a trial period so she can try out several different aids. Costs typically range
between $800 and $3,000 per ear.
Medicare doesn’t cover hearing aids nor
do most health insurers. For more information on the different kinds of hearing
aids, models and new technology visit
www.hearingloss.org and order the Consumer’s Guide to Hearing Aids for $4.25.
• Assistive Devices: These are products
that can help with less than perfect hearing, such as telephone amplifying devices,
TV and radio listening systems, assistive
listening devices or alert products like
flashing light door bells, smoke detectors,
etc. A good place to locate these types of
products is at www.abledata.com, or call
800-227-0216.
• Cochlear implants: If hearing loss is severe, cochlear implant surgery may provide a possible solution. Ask her doctor
about this option.
Discount Hearing Aids
For the millions of Americans that need
hearing aids but can’t afford them, there’s
a great program that can help called “Audient.” A relatively new non-profit service
that helps people purchase new hearing
aids at greatly discounted prices. If eligible, you’ll receive an examination by a
hearing health professional (within their
nationwide network), and then be fitted
with new digital, behind-the-ear hearing
aids. Routine follow-up visits are also provided. Discounts range between 30 and 80
percent. To learn more visit www.audientalliance.org or call 877-283-4368.
Savvy Tips: Many states have a telecommunications equipment distribution program that provides free telephone
equipment to assist people with their hearing problem. Check with your local telephone company or visit www.tedpa.org to
find what’s available in your state. And a
great resource for hearing loss information
is the Better Hearing Institute, which also
offers a free booklet titled Your Guide to
Better Hearing. To get a copy, visit
www.betterhearing.org or call 800-3279355.

■ Dreams of death
Dear Dream Lady,
I dreamed my heart stopped and I had
to have open-heart surgery. I made it,
thank God. (I am 74.) I saw lots of clouds
and people in a church and a hill of clouds.
I went through the clouds and people
handed me gifts. I like to buy gifts for my
friends. Then, a warm hand touches my
shoulder and someone said, “It’s not time
yet.” I had to go back and I did not want
to. My son died yesterday. I pray for him.
He didn’t believe until the end. I also have
a sweet daughter, (photo enclosed) but I
worry about her.
Bonnie Y., Titusville, Florida
Dear Bonnie,
My deepest condolence on your son’s
passing. You sound like a generous and
kind woman so I am certain you raised
your daughter to have your fine characteristics. There is no need to worry about her.
Dear Dream Lady,
I’ve been a widow for a long time. Not
so long ago I had a dream that I was looking for my husband. I knocked at his door.
He answered and I told him I needed his
help. I was so happy to see him. He said
he would help me. The next thing I knew
we were on a train and I asked him,
“Where are we going?” He said, “I am
taking you home.” Then I woke up.
Denise P., Yorba Linda, California
Dear Denise,
Every so often I see dreams like this.
They are either comforting to the dreamer
or disturbing. The train tells me you are on
a journey, but we don’t know if the destination is death (to see your husband again)
or if you are preparing for a different direction in life. You know that because you
know your health status. Either way, it
sounds like you will be content with the
outcome. Please keep in touch with me on
how things go with your health and life.
Dream Lady
Please send your dreams to Dream Lady at P.O.

Tipping
■ The debate goes on
Dear Aunt Bingo,
I recently found myself faced with the
question of what is the appropriate amount
to tip at Bingo. Since I enjoy reading your
perspective regarding my favorite game, I
figured you would be able to offer some
insight.
I’ve been a regular Bingo player for
about four years. I am not a fan of machines, so the hall I play at is all paper. I
love the game immensely and, when I’m
fortunate enough to win, I always tip
10%—which I thought was the “standard.”
A few weeks ago, however, I had a
conversation about tipping with another
regular player. According to him, my way
of thinking is way off base.
Our talk took place during the first session of the day and centered on a HUGE
cash ball that was up for grabs during one
of the evening sessions. I casually mentioned that if I were to hit it I would tip
10% because that’s what I always do. He
scoffed and said, “10% is way too much
for Bingo,” and went on to tell me how
much he tips when he wins. (I’d rather not
specify the amount here, but I will say that
it’s significantly less than what I tip).
Although I know that everyone has
their own ideas when it comes to this subject, his comments did surprise me. What
are your thoughts? —Renee F., Las
Vegas, Nevada
Dear Renee,
Tipping is a popular topic in this column and one which generates lots of opinions from both sides of the Bingo table.
The majority of workers I’ve heard
from (who are employed at for-profit Bingos) say they work for little more than
minimum wage and count on tips to sup-
Page 12; Bingo Bugle (Los Angeles County) May 2016
plement that income. (I stress for-profit
because charity Bingo is run by volunteers
who should not be expecting or getting
tips.) These workers see their role as part
of the service industry which, like restaurant servers or taxi drivers, traditionally
includes tipping for that service.
Generally speaking, my understanding
is that these workers expect just what you
have been tipping—10%—which is considerably less than you would other service providers.
The debate begins, however, with those
players who do not consider Bingo workers part of the service industry and do not
feel a specific percentage of their prize
money should be given up. This is certainly understandable: After months of
losing at Bingo, what player wants to surrender $100 of his or her long-awaited
$1,000 jackpot? For these folks, giving a
Bingo worker a flat $5, $10, or $20 tip is
as far as they are willing to go, in no small
part because of all the money they have
spent on Bingo without a win.
As one player wrote: “I’ve spent plenty
of money going to Bingo, trying repeatedly to win. Once I’m lucky enough to
win, I prefer to ‘share the joy’ with my
family, who truly helps me all the time,
not strangers who never have! Why should
I be obligated to tip anyone who didn’t
provide a personal service to me?”
Part of the issue may be that people
who currently, or at some time in their
lives, worked at a job that relied on tips,
understand how important tipping is and
make sure to tip appropriately in service
situations. Those who have not been at the
receiving end of tipping may view it as an
option they should not be obligated to exercise.
A Bingo worker once commented: “It
is time to inform the entire Bingo community that tipping is customary and, yes, it
should be 10%. It is quite discouraging to
go above and beyond to assist Bingo players and be tipped next to nothing. Maybe
you can’t tip 10%, but be fair. You win
$10,000 and tip $20? Really?”
To sum up, I personally feel that Bingo
workers are indeed in the service industry.
And if I feel that a worker is doing his or
her best to make sure I have an enjoyable
time at Bingo, I will share my good fortune with them at the rate of at least 10%.
If the service just isn’t there, then the
worker should not be surprised—or complain—if the tip is smaller. —Aunt Bingo

de León, the first governor of Puerto Rico.
The house is now a museum of 16th- and
17th-century family life.
Across from Casa Blanca is Fuerte San
Felipe del Morro or El Morro fortress, rising
majestically 140 feet above the sea. El
Morro, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean
and San Juan Bay, is the most striking of the
city’s military fortifications. It was built between 1540 and 1783 to protect San Juan
from attacks by sea. Among its many attractions is a maze of secret tunnels and dungeons, and a small museum.
A small square called Plaza de Hostos
features artisans’ displays, snack stands, and
the traditional piragueros—vendors selling
shaved ice sweetened with tropical fruit
syrups. Also in the area is La Princesa, a former jail and now headquarters of the Puerto
Rico Tourism Company. The restored building features a gallery of Puerto Rican art
with permanent and visiting exhibitions.
Next comes the red-painted Puerta de
San Juan, or San Juan Gate. This is one of
six original massive wooden doors that centuries ago were closed at sundown to protect
residents. Pass through the doorway and follow the street to La Fortaleza, a palatial
structure built in 1540 and the oldest governor’s mansion in the Western Hemisphere
still in use.
So, grab your most comfortable shoes,
turn on your phone’s camera, and get ready
to marvel at the perfect marriage of the past
and present on the historic streets of Old San
Juan. A walking tour is a wonderful way to
get acquainted with any city. And if you
need a break, hop aboard one of the trolley
cars that makes the rounds of the area.
There’s plenty more to see and do in
Puerto Rico and throughout your travels during the 28th annual World Championship
Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise. Call
the Bingo Bugle Cruise Hotline at 888-3522464 or visit bingobugle.com/cruise for more

1st Week of
Every Month
Setting sail from Fort Lauderdale,
Florida, on November 12, 2016, the 28th
Annual World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise will explore the
exotic eastern Caribbean with stops at four
exciting island destinations—St. Maarten,
St. Kitts, San Juan and Grand Turk.
Entering your sixth day at sea, Carnival
Conquest drops anchor at dazzling, sundrenched San Juan, Puerto Rico. And
among the many enjoyable excursions
available there is a guided or on-your-own
tour of beautiful Old San Juan.
Narrow cobblestone streets, colorful
colonial buildings, centuries-old fortresses
overlooking the Atlantic, fascinating museums and art galleries, endless shopping, and
handcrafts on every corner are but some of
the characteristics of the legendary Old City.
A great place to start is at one of many
overlooks of San Juan Bay, the busiest
ocean port in the Caribbean, bringing in half
of the region’s trade and over a million
cruise ship visitors a year. Bayside shops
carry everything from gold jewelry to island
arts and crafts.
As you follow the curve of the bay, you
come upon La Muralla, the city wall. Built
between 1539 and 1641 using sandstone
blocks up to 20 feet thick, the wall was
completed in 1782 and was erected to protect the city from enemies. If you peer
across the water toward the western mouth
of the bay, you will see Isla de Cabras, or
Goat Island, and a small Spanish fort built
in 1610.
In Old San Juan’s Casa Don Q, you can
learn about Destileria Serralles, a rum distillery established in 1865—and perhaps
sample its award-winning products. A few
streets beyond brings you to Museo de
Dona Fela, the original residence of Felisa
Rincón de Gautier, the city’s first woman
mayor. Also in Old San Juan is Casa Blanca,
or the White House. For 250 years it was the
residence of the descendents of Juan Ponce

Sands Stadium
With the new T-Mobile Arena opening,
another, much bigger, sports venue may be
in the works. Sands Corp., in a partnership
with Majestic Realty, wants to build a $1.2
billion 65,000-seat domed stadium on the
campus of the University of Nevada Las
Vegas, about a mile east of the Strip. The
stadium would host UNLV football
games, large-scale concerts and other entertainment events, and potentially an NFL
team. Though the announcement that partners financial titans Sheldon Adelson
(Sands) and Ed Roski (Majestic) made a
splash, the project is only in the conceptual phase and plans call for $780 million
to come from public funding, mostly via
taxes on tourists, that would have to be approved. If the project goes forward, construction would begin in 2017, with the
completion date scheduled for 2020.

its Mojave Desert-inspired design, 200

street buskers will not be permitted to work

SLS Plans
Plans have been announced for a new
structure that will be used for convention
space and include a rooftop pool and bar
area. The building will be located in a
courtyard area near the existing tower
that’s being converted into a W Hotel.
Excalibur Smoke Free
The 1,995 guest rooms and suites in Excalibur’s newly renamed Royal Tower
have been upgraded and converted into “a
completely smoke-free experience,” with
new carpeting and bedding, modern furnishings, and 40-inch flat-screen TVs. The
pool deck is also undergoing a renovation.
Wynn’s Retail Project
Rodeway Inn Purchase
More details have been released about
the Wynn Plaza retail project. Slated to
open in the fall of 2017, the two-story
75,000-square-foot mall will feature
Parisian-inspired styling with a glassedroof atrium and a multi-colored walkway
leading in from the Strip. The retail mix

Angel Bingo - Palmdale - Thursday, Friday & Saturday Nights
and Quinoa Salad is a meal in a bowl. It’s
perfect for lunch or dinner on a hot summer day, and it will keep for two to three
days in the refrigerator.
SUMMER FRUIT, VEGETABLE
AND QUINOA SALAD
Because It’s June
June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month. It’s a great time to include
more fresh vegetables and fruits in our
diets. The latest Dietary Guidelines recommend that we all increase our vegetable
and fruit intake. Fruits and vegetables provide a variety of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and fiber, and they lower
your risk of developing certain chronic
diseases. They also are naturally low in
calories, fat and sodium, which can help
you maintain a healthy weight.
How many fruits and vegetables should
you eat each day? The USDA’s MyPlate
recommendations are based on your calorie needs for your age, gender and activity
level. For a 2,000 calorie diet, you should
eat 2 cups of fruit and 2 to 3 cups of vegetables a day. To learn what your individual needs are, use the customized Daily
Food Plan on the MyPlate website.
What counts as a cup of fruit or vegetables? In general, 1 cup of fruit or 100 percent fruit juice, or 1/2 cup of dried fruit
counts as 1 cup from the fruit group; and
1 cup of raw or cooked vegetables or vegetable juice, or 2 cups of raw leafy greens
can be considered 1 cup from the vegetable group.
Before eating fresh fruits and vegetables, it is important to remember some
basic food safety rules.
* Avoid bruised or damaged produce
and keep it separate from raw meat, poultry and seafood.
* Perishable fresh produce, such as lettuce, herbs and mushrooms, and all cut or
peeled produce should be stored in the refrigerator at 40 F or below.
* Wash your hands for 20 seconds with
warm water and soap before and after
preparing fruits and vegetables.
* Produce should be washed under running water (do not use soap) before eating,
cutting or cooking. Then, cut away any
damaged or bruised areas.
* Always wash cutting boards, dishes,
utensils and counters between prep of raw
meat, poultry or seafood and produce.
My recipe for Summer Fruit, Vegetable
Quinoa takes this recipe from a delicious salad to a complete meal. The grain
has been called a superfood because its
protein content is very high for a
cereal/pseudo-cereal. It’s also a rich
source of B vitamins, thiamine, riboflavin,

where they miss the boat is not recognizing

One of the reasons I enjoy playing

entertaining. This particular session took
“entertaining” to a whole new level! —

Entertaining Bingo
■ Cheating at it’s finest
Hi Guy,
I know you and other columnists in this
paper have said repeatedly that it is pretty
much impossible for folks to cheat at
Bingo, but we had an incident at one local
Bingo—which shows that there will always be people that are going to try.
We were about two-thirds of the way
through the first session when a woman
Bingoed. The runner checked her numbers
against the board—which is what they
usually do here—and said it was correct.
But then he paused a second and asked to
verify the serial number and called it out.
The caller checked it with the machine
(however they do that) and said that there
seemed to be a problem with the card.
They checked it a second time and again
could not confirm the serial number.
The winner acted a bit uncomfortable
at first, then got loud and started complaining about having a Bingo and them
not paying out. The caller stared the player
down and said that it “appeared” that the
woman’s Bingo paper was not part of the
packs sold there and that he would be
happy to call the police and sort this out.
The player acted all insulted, but also
quickly grabbed her belongings and
stormed out of the hall, yelling: “I will
never come to this (dirty word) Bingo
again!”
Once she was gone, the caller shook his
head, said “nice try,” and tore up the bogus
Bingo pack and tossed it aside. He then
said: “Shall we continue with the game?”
Hi R.R.,
What a wild scene!
I wonder how often people try to pass
off bogus packs at Bingo? It seems to me
it would be a rarity, especially considering
that the odds of the paper getting a Bingo
are already slim, and the odds of the paper
not being verified electronically even
slimmer.
And let’s also underline how low it is
to even try pulling off something like this.
I assume that it was a charity Bingo where
this occurred, which means this woman
planned to cheat the not-for-profit that was
sponsoring the Bingo as well as the many
charities it funds. I repeat: L-O-W.
I wish someone running the Bingo had
reported this to the cops. Assuming the
woman had driven her car there, they
could have gotten a license number, given
it to the police, and hopefully they would
have traced the number, gotten her address
and paid the lovely lady a visit.
It also wouldn’t hurt to circulate an
email or other notice to the rest of the Bingos in the area, letting them know that this
person is out there and possibly making
the rounds to try and pass off yet another
fake Bingo.
You might assume that her gigantic
failure would discourage her from trying
such a stunt again. But then again, it was
such a dumb move in the first place, made
by a clearly stupid person, that she might
just be fool enough to try it again. —Guy

Saturday Nights
Most players will recognize two playing
options; the suited J-K of hearts (i.e., twocard royal flush) and the consecutive threecard straight flush 8-9-10 (spades). Of the
two options, the three-card straight flush (89-10) has a higher expected value (3.00 ER)
than the two suited high cards (2.98 ER). It’s
a close call, but holding the suited 8-9-10 is
slightly better than holding the suited J-K.
Nevertheless, if you look closely at the hand
there is an even better option that most players miss. That’s holding the four card-straight
8-9-10-J. The EV for the latter is 3.72, making this the preferred hold of the three options.
Here’s another example (Jacks or Better).
Which cards would you hold?
The above hand is an example of how
players tend to focus only on the high cards
in their hand. They immediately make a decision on which high cards to hold and then
hit the draw button. In addition, many players
view the Ace as a high card only, when, in
fact, it could be used as a low card (and part
of an Ace low, three-card straight flush).
Here are two tips that could help you
avoid the costly mistake of not recognizing
all the options in your hand.
1) When you initially look at the cards in
your hand and hit the hold buttons under the
cards that you believe are the best playing option, train yourself to look at the hand one
more time to be sure you haven’t missed another playing option.
2) Practice playing video poker at home
on your computer, using a video poker training software. The program will alert you
when you make an incorrect play (that includes “missing” a playing option). This type
of training will help you recognize all the
playing options in each hand. (The two software programs that I recommend are Video
Poker for Winners, and Optimum Video
Poker. Both are available on my online store
at www.smartgaming.com.)
Lastly, if you slow down your play and,
in addition, take frequent breaks (at least
stand and stretch once an hour), this will help
keep your mind fresh and focused on recognizing all the playing options in every hand.
When players initially see this hand pop
up on their screen, they will invariably focus
on the three high cards (A-K-J). The correct
hold when you have three unsuited high
cards that includes an Ace is to drop the Ace
and hold the other two unsuited cards (i.e.,
hold the unsuited J-K with a 2.42 EV). However, look closely at the hand again because
there is a better hold that is not so obvious:
the three-card straight flush A-2-5 (2.69 EV).

Delicious and Healthy
Diabetic Eye Disease
If your kids are like many, they’re
happy to get their hands on chicken fingers. Now, you can improve on this fun
food with the help of an ancient grain and
a superberry. Try nutrient-rich millet or
quinoa instead of plain breading, and tartsweet lingonberries, which Dr. Oz has
called a superfruit full of antioxidants, for
the dipping sauce.
Approximately 13 million Americans
have been diagnosed with diabetes and an
additional 5.2 million have the disease and
don’t know it. Diabetes can cause a number of health complications such as heart
disease, kidney failure and sight-threatening eye diseases, which often have no
early warning signs.
Diabetic retinopathy is the most common form of diabetic eye disease. It is a
complication that occurs when diabetes
damages the tiny blood vessels inside the
retina.
To reduce the risk of vision loss, the
National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health encourages people with
diabetes to have a dilated eye exam every
year and keep their health on TRACK:
• Take your medications as prescribed
by your doctor.
• Reach and maintain a healthy weight.
• Add more physical activity to your
daily routine.
• Control your ABCs-A1C, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.
• Kick the smoking habit.
Getting annual eye exams, timely treatment and appropriate follow-up care can
reduce the risk of blindness by 90 percent.

Place ¾ cup of dried millet or quinoa
in a pot with 1½ cups of water. Boil millet
or quinoa on medium heat for 20 minutes
or until soft. Allow to cool. Meanwhile,
preheat oven to 425 degrees and grease a
baking sheet. In a small bowl, whisk flour,
salt and pepper. In a second bowl, whisk
eggs. Place the millet in a third bowl.
Dredge chicken pieces in flour mixture,
then eggs, and then the millet, being sure
to coat well. Place on baking sheet. Spray
chicken fingers generously with cooking
spray (this helps the nuggets to get crispy
but can be skipped if you prefer) and bake
for 15−20 minutes until chicken is cooked
through and browned (or you can panfry).

Dear Annie,
More than 60 years ago, I remember
visiting my great-grandmother in Macon,

called “spoon bread”. My sister and I
would love to make it for our grandchildren. Do you have any recpes for “spoon

I love your recipes!
Karen Ann and Sister Sue from Chicago
Dear Karen Ann and Sister Sue,
Spoon bread was very popular 60 years
ago and still is with lots of Southerners. It
is more like a pudding than a bread. I
would serve it with grilled chicken or
grilled pork chops. —Annie

“For us there is only the trying, the rest is none
of our business.” That notion might be a little
unnerving for you detail-and system-loving Virgins. But you’ll want to try this month to “Let
go and Let God” (or whatever you feel as a
higher force guiding your life). This month involves allowing nature to offer the clues you
need to guide you forward.

ARIES: Mar. 21-Apr. 20: I get it, you want to
escape right now—or you want free from the
status quo. But with Mars and Saturn joined in
the same sign now, you’ll need to allow your
imagination to roam freely while keeping a
sharp eye on the various details related to finances and home security. Find a way to put
your urge to roam into a new philosophy, art or
spiritual practice.
Lucky Days: 5-12
Lucky Numbers: 33-46
TAURUS: Apr. 21-May 21: You love luxury,
and with Venus active all month, the temptation
to indulge beyond your means is pressing hard
on your purse. Instead of having to pay the
piper later, make a list of all of your current desires and then take a vow to purchase just one.
And then go ahead and splurge. This is called a
careful indulgence. And admit it, you deserve
it. (But just one).
Lucky Days: 16-28
Lucky Numbers: 4-69
GEMINI: May 22-June 21: If you feel neglected, consider Whistler’s Father. How different his life would have been if he’d been
painted too. Don’t let this happen to you. Promote and shine. May is the month when you
can move yourself forward by playing off your
gifts for dexterity, charm and innate cleverness.
Once you’re outside of the box discard the container and run free.
Lucky Days: 12-23
Lucky Numbers: 10-18
CANCER: June 22-July 22: Go out of your
way to discover a new source of inspiration this
month; you’re running out of gas for repeating
old habits or hobbies. Crabs tend to back themselves into a corner for security’s sake, but that
won’t serve you well right now. Fresh is the
word. Break your shell. Take a chance on the
unknown—if you trust your inner guidance
you’re guaranteed an exciting ride.
Lucky Days: 8-21
Lucky Numbers 2-22
LEO: July 23-Aug. 23: You’ll benefit by
working to expose the secret forces that influence your life. For most of us this means understanding the power of love—who or what we
blend our energies with in the hope of achieving
some goal. Developing partnerships and affiliations becomes an important theme for you
throughout 2016. Aim for truth-telling with
everyone you cross paths with, there’s no room
for error now.

LIBRA: Sept. 24-Oct. 23: May offers you the
opportunity to reshape your destiny by freeing
your mind from self-defeating ways of thinking. How to handle this shift with grace? Initiate
a new study, hobby or passion that will replace
old habits and lay down new mental grooves.
This allows you to transform gracefully; a victory for all harmony-loving Libras.
Lucky Days: 14-19
Lucky Numbers: 4-49
SCORPIO: Oct. 24-Nov. 22: What gives
your life meaning? And what is your life’s purpose? Surprisingly, you’ll find a clue to these
questions when you make a plan to organize
your financial affairs. Also, you’ll want to banish any skeletons in the family closet. Secrets
and money often go hand in hand; freeing up
one will have a direct effect on the other.
Lucky Days: 12-22
Lucky Numbers 37-55
SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 23-Dec. 21: Dynamic
Mars is back in your sign, empowering you
with a galloping stride and your eye focused on
the prize. Your challenge? The Full Moon on
the 21st puts pressure on delivering the facts
and the goods. Don’t be caught shorthanded. Inspiration is fabulous, but it’s nothing without
commitments and scheduling to back it up.
Lucky Days: 5-19
Lucky Numbers: 38-64
CAPRICORN: Dec. 22-Jan. 20: Independence. You’re craving it like crazy right now. So
what’s holding you back? Dwelling on doubts.
Don’t dismiss what seems impractical in your
life right now. Sometimes we need to get a wee
bit crazy to discover the way forward, and
you’ll benefit by letting yourself stray from the
tried and true path this month. Make a whim—
and then go for it.
Lucky Days: 3-29
Lucky Numbers: 8-35
AQUARIUS: Jan. 21-Feb. 19: This month
ignites a tension between your needs and those
of your children or other family members. Shift
the focus from your head to your heart. Follow
Pascal’s wisdom—he wrote: “The heart has its
reasons which reason knows nothing of. We
know the truth not only by the reason, but by
the heart.” The truth will, really, set you free.
Lucky Days: 6-19
Lucky Numbers: 22-56
PISCES: Feb. 20-Mar. 20: Your emotional
meter is flicking high and low this month,
which can drain your energy. Your reputation
for over-empathizing with others might be put
to the test. Remember that boundaries are in
place to maintain the integrity of any relationship. Strive for a fair exchange between the
‘give and take,’ but don’t settle for the short end
of the stick.

Lucky Numbers: 33-43

Debate Bingo
Bible Bingo
It’s another election year, and Moe Bar
on Capitol Hill in Washington, has its TV
screen tuned in to the latest presidential
debate. Patrons have a little more at stake
than just politics, however. They are at
Moe Bar to compete in Debate Bingo. Before each political debate, the bar’s Bingo
host, Matt Hickey, writes up a list of possible catchphrases, puts them into a Bingo
software system, and prints Debate Bingo
cards with lingo related to the current political free-for-all. Cross out five squares
in a row and win a free drink. Hickey
takes careful notes each week to create his
Bingo cards. “If something happens that I
think is hilarious, I add it,” he told the
Seattle Times. Among some recent cards’
squares: “Hillary’s emails,” “Trump mentions his border wall,” and “Bernie supports guns.”
Playwright Vicki Quade and Nuns4Fun
Entertainment announced that the play
Bible Bingo was performed on the island
of Guam as a fundraiser for the island’s
Academy of Our Lady of Guam. Two performances of Bible Bingo were given this
spring. Bible Bingo is a comedy about the
Catholic culture of fundraising and Bingo,
featuring the character Mrs. Mary Margaret O’Brien, a former nun who now
heads a fictitious archdiocese fundraising
department. Now in its third year, the
comedy opened at the Royal George Theatre in Chicago in November 2013, and is
still performed there every weekend. It has
also been on tour for the past two years.
The performance in Guam marks the first
time the show was performed overseas.

Racetrack Bingo
The owners of Racetrack Bingo in Fort
Walton Beach, Florida, have been charged
by federal authorities with conspiracy to
commit fraud, illegal gambling and the
theft of millions of dollars from local charities. An indictment summarizing charges
against Larry and Dixie Masino states that
the couple conspired to obtain approximately $5.8 million in “criminally derived
property” by defrauding a coalition of
charities through exorbitant rent and fees
for the use of their Bingo hall. “Larry L.
Masino and Dixie L. Masino operated
Racetrack Bingo Inc. in violation of the
Bingo statute in order to gain profit for
themselves and their children,” the indictment reads. The Masinos also were indicted individually on numerous money
laundering charges.
Cultural Bingo
Students learned about different cultures, practiced speaking various languages and tasted international foods as
part of a Bingo event offered by the University of Houston’s Center for Diversity
and Inclusion (CDI). The Bingo, which
took place during UH’s Cultural Connect
Week, was part of a Language Exchange
event and required attendees to engage
with other players who fit criteria listed on
the Bingo card squares. This was CDI’s
first Bingo night, and more than 200 students, faculty and staff attended. CDI, the

Let’s check the mailbox
One of my biggest rewards for bringing
you this Bingo column every month is
hearing from readers via my e-mail:
[email protected].
I want to apologize to a nice lady in
Bakersfield, California. It seems that only
today did I find a letter from her that came
in the Bingo mailbox over a year ago.
Wow. I wonder if she is still reading this.
Gloria writes: “Bob, I would like to say
that I truly enjoy your column in the Bingo
Bugle. Also, when the Bingo announcer
tells everyone there will be NO cell phone
usage in the hall, what part of “NO” don’t
these Bingo players understand?
“I really love playing Bingo at my favorite place here in Bakersfield. I have
played since my son was in high school. I
worked as a parent volunteer at the time.
He is now 50.
“One of the downsides of our hall is
that we only have two TV monitors to
look out to check the calls. They are on
opposite walls. One on the north end, one
on the south end. I personally think it’s
about time that they bought a couple more,
possibly for the corners. I know the two
can be hard to see because when we volunteers are in the middle of the room, we
often block the view…even though we
don’t intend to do so.”
Well, Gloria, thanks for being such a
longtime Bingo fan. You bring up an interesting point. If YOU, having been a vol-
Jerome - Volunteer
St. Cornelius
Friday Nights - Long Beach
unteer for so many years, can’t get the ball
rolling to make changes in the hall, what
can the average player do when he or she
wants something changed?
I have spent a lot of your time lately
talking about callers who mumble and advising people what to do. I’ll repeat the
best advice I can give. Don’t continue to
sit in a bad hall hearing bad calls. But…
and listen to this…don’t try to change
things by YOURSELF! See if others
around you feel the same way. Then, take
GROUP action. I firmly believe that many
people who run Bingo halls are not really
aware of the problems. They are there
nine-to-five and life can become a blur.
We are only there when we want to be
there.
Again, I want to point out that I love
the people who make Bingo possible. If
you are a caller or a runner, you know that
over the years I have been on your side.
But, we all need to work together on this.
Let’s not allow Bingo to change from
the “game we love” to the “game we
dread.”
Next time: Something you might not
have thought of.
