Summer 2015 - Miriam`s House
A PROMISE FOR THE FUTURE Board of Directors M iriam’s House is excited to announce the launch of our Legacy Society for planned giving. The Society was established to recognize generous individuals in our community who have included or plan to include Miriam’s House in their estate plans. The Society provides visionary donors with the opportunity to create a lasting legacy in support of women and families in Central Virginia. We at Miriam’s House would be pleased to discuss planned giving with you and your advisors to establish a plan that works for you and your family and that would also help secure the future of Miriam’s House. Please contact Sarah Quarantotto at [email protected] or 434.847.1101 for more information about the Legacy Society or to become a member. Our 450 attendees enjoyed the beautiful new space at Lynchburg College’s Drysdale Student Center while sampling their delicious fare. Our theme for the luncheon, from support to success, highlighted the many homeless women and families that have moved from the support of our programs to be great successes as they leave homelessness behind. Community First participant, Nicole, shared the inspiration she received from Miriam’s House as she struggled with poverty, homelessness and physical disabilities. Nicole’s success reminded everyone of the importance of their support. Former Board President, Anne Gibbons, presented the Elizabeth M. Forsyth Community Service Award to Yvonne Malcolm who has made significant contributions to our work over the years. Thanks to you, the luncheon generated record breaking revenues and a sold out venue! Please join us on May 17, 2016 for our 17th Annual Luncheon! “I am grateful for the time it gave me to get my life on track and to show my children that I had made positive changes and could be a role model for them.” –Ebony MOM OFFERED 2ND CHANCE E bony came to Miriam’s House determined to turn her life around. She had made some poor choices in the past that led to her being incarcerated and separated from her children. As she re-entered society, she knew that things would be difficult because of her criminal record. Her mistakes limited her employment and housing opportunities, but she was determined to rise above her past. Ebony had planned to live with a family member when she was released from prison. When those plans fell through, she and her 2 year old daughter became homeless. Despite this setback, Ebony was diligent in pursuing her goals. Upon entering Miriam’s House, she completed a job readiness class, met weekly with her job coach and soon was employed at a local hotel. She tracked and saved her money carefully, setting aside as much as possible for a security deposit and first month’s rent. Ebony’s daughter, Lily, participated in Children’s Program at Miriam’s House and was provided with weekly educational and recreational activities. Ebony secured quality childcare for Lily at Elizabeth’s Early Learning Center and continued to work toward reunification with her older children. Last month, Ebony signed a lease on her own home that has enough room for her daughter and two older sons. Her case manager at Miriam’s House helped her create a budget that accounted for all of her bills and assisted her in securing furnishings and household items. Ebony reflected on her time at Miriam’s House saying, “I am grateful for the time it gave me to get my life on track and to show my children that I had made positive changes and could be a role model for them.” PERMIT #680 Miriam’s House, Inc.
