Fall 2011 - Miriam`s House
Miriam’s House Asks You to Consider This Giving Option: IRA Charitable Rollovers Extended to December 31, 2011 The 2010 Tax Relief Act extended until December 31, 2011, a provision know as the “Charitable IRA Rollover” which allows taxpayers age 70½ or older to make tax-free transfers (of up to $100,000 per year) directly from their IRA to charities. This law, originally enacted in 2006, expired at the end of 2009, but was renewed through December 31, 2011. Charitable rollovers can be made as long as you are at least 70½ years old when you transfer the gifts. Such gifts won’t increase your taxable income or withholding. Additionally, funds transferred from your IRA to a charity will not subject your Social Security income to higher tax levels, and will count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD). Example: aomi wishes to give $25,000 to Miriam’s House in 2011. Upon hearing of the Charitable IRA Rollover, aomi directs her IRA custodian to transfer $25,000 directly to Miriam’s House before December 31, 2011. aomi will not be taxed on the $25,000 distributed to Miriam’s House. (or will she deduct this amount because it’s not included in her taxable income for 2011.) Giving from an IRA rather than other assets may be appropriate if: • you use the standard deduction rather than itemizing your deductions, or • you don’t need all of your IRA required minimum distribution, or • you might not be able to deduct all of your charitable contributions because of deduction limitations. As an example, a Pro Forma letter directing a Charitable IRA Rollover is included with this newsletter. To learn more about charitable distributions from IRA’s, please speak with your accountant, attorney, or other tax advisor. Laura Keohane is a lawyer with Edmunds & Williams, P.C. in Lynchburg whose practice is concentrated in business law, trusts, and estates. Spotlight on Children’s Program Volunteer Susan Smith Susan Smith has always felt compassion for those whom are less fortunate than she is. “I was blessed with an easy life. I never had to go through the hardship of being homeless,” she says. Rather than letting her experiences push her into a realm of comfort, Susan felt the need to give back due to her good fortune. Susan’s motivation to volunteer for this type of organization came in the form of a friendship with a young lady she met years ago. “She came to our church, (Rocks Baptist Church in Appomattox), and had two sons,” Smith says, “When we found out that she was in an abusive relationship, we told her that she needed to get out.” Eventually, the young lady had enough and when she did get out, the church was there to provide support. “The church moved her out and rented an apartment for her until she got on her feet. I wished that I could do more for her like MH does for their residents.” Susan supports MH because, “the program doesn’t give a handout, but helps those who are willing to change.” Over the years, Susan has witnessed the success of the ladies and the children. “Seeing the differences made in their lives is what pays me back for what I am doing here,” she says. Volunteers like Susan play a great part in keeping Miriam’s House successful when a resident is ready to make real change in her life. This donation was made as a part of the “100 Grand Gestures” that the company is offering to the community, in celebration of their 100 year anniversary! The furniture, which included sofas, loveseats, a box spring, and a desk for an administrative office, was delivered with much elation. This was apparent by the smiles and warm greetings of the movers, along with everyone else involved. “I’m probably just as excited as the people here at Miriam’s House are,” said Rick Foutz, Manager of the Grand Home Furnishings store in Lynchburg. The residents, staff, and everyone involved here at Miriam’s House would like to express our gratitude and appreciation for this kind donation. Thank you to Grand Home Furnishings! Volunteer Extraordinaire, Liz Royer Liz Royer is a volunteer with the children’s program at Miriam’s House. Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, she and her husband settled in Lynchburg just over three years ago. With one dog, two cats and no children of her own, Liz saw a perfect opportunity to help out at Miriam’s House. Liz oversees residents’ children while they attend various developmental workshops on Monday nights. Liz has done an immense amount of volunteering throughout her adult life. She has participated in Meals on Wheels in two other cities, and has served as a chair person for a fundraising event cosponsored by her employer, BB&T. She enjoys working with Allison Bennett, the program coordinator, in developing activities for the children and looks forward to seeing their smiling faces each week. Miriam’s House owes much of its success to the hard work and dedication of its volunteers, like Liz. Kate McCrea of EC Glass High School Makes a Donation to Honor Miriam’s House The Leave a Legacy Foundation is a “public awareness campaign with a mission to help people become involved with their communities.” The foundation recently launched a high school writing contest and Kate won 3rd place. The contest entailed writing an essay on what “leaving a legacy to others means”. Her reward for her heartfelt essay was a $100 donation, made to any local organization of her choice. When asked “why” Miriam’s House was chosen she stated, “I knew that I wanted the monies to stay local because I feel it makes more of an impact that way.” Kate first learned about Miriam’s House through her volunteerism on the Youth Philanthropy Committee for the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust. The goal of the committee is twofold. Firstly, the committee works to keep the youth of the Lynchburg area aware of our community’s needs, and secondly, to keep them active in volunteering locally. While serving on the committee and looking through grant proposals, one stuck out at her. “I love the concept of Miriam’s House and their ability to get women back on their feet so quickly. It says a lot about the program.” After heavily weighing her options, Kate decided that MH was the best program to invest her prize money. McCrea, a recent graduate from E.C. Glass High School, has volunteered at other places like her church, Amazement Square, and The Daily Bread. Giving back to the community through volunteerism, is something that is very important to her. Kate will attend Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina this fall. Miriam’s House P.O.
