My family and I will be traveling by caravan from Massachusetts. I have been
to every reunion and can’t wait to see my cousins again!
It is always hot at the Homestead in July so we have ordered tents to provide some shade in the
field. Please feel free to bring your own pop-up for additional
shade or to designate your own spot. We are searching for a mister to add additional
relief from the heat.
We could use help before and during the event with parking, setting up and taking
down. As you have in past, it would be great to have help putting the chairs and tables
away after the Gathering. Many hands make light work.
We hope to see a lot of you at the reunion. It’s a chance to see your cousins that you
haven’t seen in 5 years and to meet cousins you didn’t know you had.

"Hi everyone!
My name is Jenn, and I'm a relatively "new" Studebaker,
having married my wonderful husband Jacob nearly 8 years ago. This will be my first
Gathering, and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone! I'm also excited to plan lots of
fun games & crafts for everyone to enjoy - traditional games like the Wheelbarrow
Johnny Race and corn shelling, plus new activities like a photo scavenger hunt and
family bingo. Since I am a Gathering rookie, I'd welcome any and all volunteers that
would like to help with the games!
See you in July!

They Tarried Near Kuskuskies:
The Lives of Joseph, Philip, and Elizabeth Studebaker 1744 – 1827
By David F. Bower, Ed. D. (H229-361-1)
Self-published for the 2016 Studebaker Family National Association Gathering
Praise for They Tarried Near Kuskuskies:
“Our cousin David Bower has compiled a robust narrative
gem enhanced by pertinent visuals within his volume entitled They Tarried Near Kuskuskies: The Lives of Joseph, Philip,
and Elizabeth Studebaker, 1744-1827. Based on solid research
of copious archival records and authoritative published
sources, both hard copy and online, David captures the historical milieu that provides context for the lives of these first
generation descendants of the immigrant Heinrich
Stotenbecker. They Tarried Near Kuskuskies is a “must read”
for anyone who is a Heinrich descendant, a Studebaker
cousin, or just a history buff with a penchant for life and significant events in colonial Pennsylvania.”
Sandra A. Studebaker, MSLS C343-722-2
“David Bower's book is a fascinating read! He
tells the tragic story of the Heinrich Studebaker Family
massacre in the context of significant events and the persons relevant to that time in history. It gives further
insight into the lives of the captive Studebaker
children, as well as their lives after their release from
captivity.”
Jo Nell Wise Costello H344-151-21
About the author:
David’s history and genealogy work has resulted in two publications:
A History of the Fredonia Institute published by the Mercer County (PA) Historical
Society (2012).
Mennonite Heritage Rediscovered: The Bauer Family of Lancaster, published in the
July 2012 Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage Journal of the Lancaster PA Mennonite
Historical Society.
David F. Bower, Ed. D., was born and raised in Sharon, PA. Some of his ancestors
settled in Mercer County PA in the early 1800’s. David has always been fascinated
about the Massacre and that the Studebaker Children were captives of the Indians,
and now shares with his readers what he’s learned about these events. Dr. Bower received his BA in Education at Grove City College .
He earned a Master’s degree in Educational Administration and a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership at the University of New Mexico. He is a former teacher of English and Theater in Belen and Albuquerque, NM, and was principal of Roosevelt Middle
School in Albuquerque. He has recently retired from the Educational Administration program at the University of New Mexico.
